  • Viewer Discretion Advised. The barn owl and pigeons in this video are WILD and can enter and leave as they please. The pigeon nestlings parents left it alone during night and barn owl appeared, entered the nest box and killed the pigeon nestling. Barn owl bred in the box last spring and barn owl also killed pigeons a year ago (see here: • Crazy, The Barn Owl Pi... ). This was sad indeed, nature is tough.
    These videos are meant to document the lives of wild barn owls in order that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene. All the videos are documenting wild barn owls.
    We love nature and want to share some of the beautiful wildlife in Israel.

    Important notes about barn owls and these cams: All these nest boxes have been monitored as part of our research group’s scientific activities from the Shamir Research Institue and University of Haifa in Israel. All the owls/birds are wild and are free to come and go. We monitor around 200 nest boxes/ 30-60 pairs a year but do not interfere in the owls breeding. In general barn owl pair fledged on average 5 fledglings per pair (range 1- 11 fledglings) but their breeding success decrease in the breeding season with earlier pairs more successful than later pairs. We add cameras either before the pair lay eggs or only have all the nestlings hatched in order to not disturb the owls. So these CAMs are in fact a very small percentage of the overall pairs we monitor. We added the cams as part of own research to learn more about them but also in order that people could observe owls lives without disturbing them. Some later pairs sometimes fail do to a lack of food. This may be hard to observe but this is nature and this is how the barn owls have evolved. You can watch a lecture to given by Dr. Motti Charter to learn more: • Everything you ever wa... .
    Some people comment about cleanliness of barn owls nest due to UA-cam cleaning nests out a lot. Barn Owls do not have any sense of smell and brings dead animals, some of them later rot and also regurgitates owl pellets inside the nests. Owls do not clean their nests and natural nest sites stay like this until they either fall a part or fill up. We do clean our nest once a year, so in fact our nest boxes are cleaner than natural ones. Cleaning boxes too much can cause pairs to abandon and also takes aware beneficial insects that help keep the boxes clean.

    This pair laid 6 eggs and out of the 45 pairs we monitored this year, this pair is the latest laying pair (laid eggs on May 10nd) in the Hula Valley we monitored. This is the second year in a row this box laid laid late. Typically, later laying pairs succeed less than earlier laying pair so there is a chance that not of all of the nestling will survive.
    In response to suggestions which have been occasionally posted in the chat box, we would like to clarify that at the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology, we use nest boxes (including this one) large enough to fledge very large broods - the largest successfully raised brood consisted of 11 barn owl fledglings.

    To be fair, the owl just wanted to nest in the box and tried VERY hard to scare the nestling away. The nestling, being unable to fly at all, had no choice but to try to defend itself. A valiant effort but it was no match.

      It's not barn owl nesting season in Israel right now. With tons of birds migrating to that area during this time of the year, food for barn owls become scarce. They won't shy away from attacking baby pigeons or other birds.

      @faefiercevulpine6990 Рік тому +3

      In the case of very tiny prey like mice, sometimes a barn owl can come down with enough force to kill it on impact when they hit the target with their feet. But their talons are powerful and they have great footing grip, which they use to hold their prey and try to quickly go for the head and neck

    I hate to see this because I use to fly pigeons and breed pigeons here in NYC. I love them so much but I do understand the order that The Most High established here on earth , and so it is with every animal. The poor youngster never had a chance against a predator. The Hawks, Eagles and Falcons use to decimate my pigeons on a daily basis when I used to fly them.

    • @harryroman1462
      @harryroman1462 Рік тому +6

      Just understand that a squab is pigeon bred for human consumption . A youngster is a pigeon bred for it's purpose to be a pigeon for flying or breeding. I'm 66 years of age and totally experienced with pigeons since I was 16 years of age. I may not have a pigeon coop now but I make sure that I take care of the wild pigeons as they are my friends. I love them just like the pigeons that are of breed. They show the same love .

      That’s impossible to do. These are owl boxes made for the owls. The pigeon parents know that owls uses these boxes, just check out some of this channels other videos. Pigeons will even try to nest in them with large barn owl nestlings inside of them….seriously that wasn’t going to work from the start. There will be plenty of empty boxes even and the pigeons will insist on trying to enter boxes with the owls in them. There is no way to make a nesting box for predatory birds that non predatory birds won’t try to nest in at some point. The same situation even happens in natural tree cavities. Nature creates them as well as humans. It’s just the way nature works
