- The Intruder barn owl that attacked the nestlings was a female that may have even been looking for a nest to breed. There is also a chance that the female was a fledgling from another nest (known as a "nest switcher") that was looking for some free food. Luckily Dad came home with dinner (a rat) and after realizing that the female was not his mate attacked her and kicked her out, potentially saving the nestling lives. That was close! Dad then seemingly confused one of his nestlings for the intruder. Luckily he did not attack the nestling too much.
All the birds in our streams/videos are WILD and can enter and leave as they please.
These videos are meant to document the lives of wild barn owls in order that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene. All the videos are documenting wild barn owls.
Important notes about barn owls and these cams: All these nest boxes have been monitored as part of our research group’s scientific activities from the Shamir Research Institute and the University of Haifa in Israel. All the owls/birds are wild and are free to come and go. We monitor around 200 nest boxes/ 30-60 pairs a year but do not interfere in the owl's breeding. In general barn owl pair fledged on average 5 fledglings per pair (range 1- 11 fledglings) but their breeding success decreased in the breeding season with earlier pairs more successful than later pairs. We add cameras either before the pair lay eggs or only have all the nestlings hatched in order to not disturb the owls. So these CAMs are in fact a very small percentage of the overall pairs we monitor. We added the cams as part of our own research to learn more about them but also in order that people could observe owls lives without disturbing them. Some later pairs sometimes fail do to a lack of food. This may be hard to observe but this is nature and this is how the barn owls have evolved. You can watch a lecture to given by Dr. Motti Charter to learn more: • Everything you ever wa... .
Some people comment about the cleanliness of barn owls nest due to UA-cam cleaning nests out a lot. Barn Owls do not have any sense of smell and bring dead animals, some of them later rot and also regurgitate owl pellets inside the nests. Owls do not clean their nests and natural nest sites stay like this until they either fall a part or fill up. We do clean our nest once a year, so in fact our nest boxes are cleaner than natural ones. Cleaning boxes too much can cause pairs to abandon and also takes aware beneficial insects that help keep the boxes clean.

Thank you, hopefully it won't happen again.
Thank you for the explanation, i was confused too about dad's behavior
It’s funny how no one wants to eat anymore just standing against the wall shook 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Family in the next room thought I was watching The View. Lol
No ones hungry from all the excitement.
No one wants to eat 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bird childhood is filled with trauma.
XD 4:03 Owl was like: wait- what the heck? how did you get here?
😥Besides the attack in this video, Dad attacked the owlet standing by the wall TWO more times when he came home later, at 06:24:15 and 06:24:54 of the live stream. Luckily the owlet didn't seem to be injured, but Dad's attitude looks very intense and wierd...
I don't think those he was trying to injure the owlet. More like trying to determine if it belonged, then trying to calm it down and move the owlet over to its nestmates.
@@derps0n839 Thanks for the explanation. He has been a great dad undoubtedly.

After The Fight:
Dad: "Shit, that was rough . . . you ok?"
Baby: *_"AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"_*
Dad: "AHHHHH!"
Baby: " . . . "
Dad: " . . . How about now?"
Baby: *_"AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"_*
Dad: "AHHHHH!"
Wow intense 😳 😬 I sure hope she finally left and never comes back. She is still in the doorway. Bravo 👏 to dad! Poor babies are like stunned and are in shock a little. They don't know whats happening..
Dad was telling the baby to shut the f up. Poor kid got all worked up and scared
Oh wow, drama! 😬
After the initial defense from abba owl, he seems to b giving a stern lecture abt not messing with his family ...
I wonder how old the intruder was
1:43 @Charter Group: what
do think of this? This is Dad going against his own chick.
He may have been trying to calm it down
I hope the owlets are not hurt😓
And thats how owls get daddy issues...
Poor owl
1:00 ... Did the attacker take the rat at first? lol.
If she was a nest switcher, that's what they do. They stand in front of the smaller nestlings, try to bully them and and take all the food. Some parents will just pass off the food and fly away but these parents still check inside the nest, which is bad news for intruders.
Wow intense. 😮
Not a word about dad attacking his own fledgling?! Even if you don't know the reason, seems very weird that it's not even mentioned.
We added it, you are correct
The chicks were confused on if was their dad or the other female.
The dad was going to preen but the chick thought it was an attack so it attacked.
Even then if you look closely at the dad, it's not actually biting.
And listen to the noises the dad makes in response to the screeching.
The 3 chicks in the corner didn't attack, even when the dad got up in their faces.
It was even making the movements that would happen when it moves its beak. It was trying to preen.
Abba owl is the best daddy he did what any daddy would do for his children, very intense heart pumping. Abba owls screeching is such a high pitch defense mechanism everyone there was scared the intruder the owlets daddy some confusion by daddy I think, I hope babies are all welk🤗👍👍💯
So he gets the rat?
Surprisingly, ppl know which one is the father and which is intruder?
Where is the mom and dad?
I feel bad for the dad 1 of the baby was confused and didn’t understand that the dad was right there
❤❤❤❤😢😢😮❤❤❤❤❤
Happy Families lol
😅😅😅
Oh My God
😳😳😳😳😳
oh my goodness, is this there own dad? How awful, I hope he never comes back! So intense for the little darlings.
The dad came in after and chased the intruder away. The past 2 nights he has been sitting on the porch to guard the box.
@@derps0n839, Thank you, I watched the nights after and saw him stand guard.
Damn owls are uuuuuugly lol and diks
They might look ugly when they first hatched, but then they become cute and fluffy
