paul dilet had so much potential, could have had multiple titles. he really struggled with his posing
And he had a very weak back but he truly looked like he was from another planet at times

There are a lot of photos from 94-95 that show Paul backstage or semi-relaxed where it’s painfully obvious that he actually had a pretty decent back.
His biggest problem was that the rest of him was so freakishly developed that his back looked weak in comparison. The overall shape and proportion was there. He just failed to bring it up to the same degree of development that he had everywhere else.
He used cables almost exclusively for his back workouts. A LOT of Pulldowns. Look at him in his prime and you’ll notice that his rear delts were absolutely the biggest around at the time (they look like SEO or site injections before that became a thing in the sport. His rear delts did a lot more work in those cable Pulldowns than his last ever did.
If Paul had adopted more heavy free weights and built that back with rows and deadlifts and the Nautilus pullover in particular, all that would be left was to work on his abysmal posing and he could have taken the Arnold and NOC multiple times and been top 3 in any show he contested. Unfortunately, his trainer (Charles Glass) let Paul pay him to count reps instead of actually TRAINING him.

As big as he was you would think his back would be his strong point but it was really weak that with terrible posing are the two things that kept him from being Mr o
He was too tall to have balanced physique sadly. But he would have made a much better action star than the Rock

Jim Manion ( head judge 98-2003): My score sheet was identical to the final results. Dorian (Yates' ) size and rear blew everyone else away. Shawn ( Ray ) was in great shape but couldn't top Dorian this time. The same is true with Kevin , Paul Dillett seemed to be holding water. If Kevin and Paul came in top shape , they would have been right up there.
Jim Rockell( head judge 2004-2011): Dorian had a SLIGHT injury but as far as I'm concerned , it had NO bearing whatsoever. He was just so dense it made no overall difference. Paul's major deficiencies were in his back : not enough muscularity for his large frame. also basic stamina throughout was in question ; during call-outs , he was breathing heavy and bending over.
Kevin has it all but was a little soft in prejudging , which hurt him. He wasn't quite as sharp as Shawn , but it was very close between second and third. It came down to the posedown ( Which Shawn won by a single point ).

@@TheLusianPopa He is underrated and it's alsoo his fault. He was The Shadow because he would disappear to Birmingham and basically did nothing to promote the sport. I'd say Jay Cutller is the first BB who understood how much money could be made by self promoting his image.

This is a big Fat myth coz there are 8 mandatory poses and there are many BBS with better back (e.g Samir Banout) .. Dorian's left bicep was melt and a scandal to display in such a notable competition

Shawn Ray was robbed. He CLEARLY should have beaten Yates. In the condition Dorian was in, he was lucky to have finished in the top 3, let alone WIN the contest.

I judge this on shape proportion movement and quality of muscle. Not how much my boss makes on a man. Judges are owned by Joe. Dorian was Joe's boy...... He won at least 3 he shouldn't have! And the other got ripped! Joe was Don King for bodybuilding

So bro it’s about density. It’s not really so much about shape despite everyone saying “bodybuilding is a men’s beauty contest”. It’s not and it never has been. Dorians density in his muscle fibers is that of a Bull compared to Shawn Ray who’s resembles a small veal. Shape, and arm size don’t matter if your back is twice as good as anyone in the show. And in 94, it was. I get your frustration, but it’s also the reason DY took 97’. His muscle is too dense. Also, his thin quads were extremely dense, they just didn’t sweep out or look as full as Levrone, Ray, and the others. Legs shouldn’t win a contest either. That trend started happening in the 2000s when Ronnie and Jay set the standard. Legs are important, but as long as you have other dominant areas all you need is to keep them from overpowering your physique. Yates could’ve had much bigger legs
