That British World War II song was considered a desperate anthem for the mothers, wives, brothers and children of soldiers who were fighting and dying in war. I find it repulsive that these Germans laugh at the British people suffering because of the Germans. This show is a circus of hate and contempt. What a great pity!
For them who don't understand German: The ladies don't laugh about the song text or about their English skills (is it really important for some people here to discuss how good or bad their English is? I can' believe it.) but about some jokes with their glove puppet which might had started before the record. They call the puppet "the one and only man in their lives" (at least during the performances) and so it is always a source of funny situations. So this video is a good example for unintended comedy of the situation. The ladies now tease each other by poking and funny faces and must giggle (like many girls do) instead of singing. Later the blonde says good bye to the audience, hoping to see them again (the reason of the song's choice). At last she announced a new performance in the next year at the same place and while she is talking about it she recognizes that she is confused and forgot the number of the current year and another one must tell her that they are actually in 2011 and that 2012 will be the next year. That crashes the rest of their singing abilities.
Thomas Fuhrmann I don't understand much German and though I could understand that the humor had nothing to do with the song, I thank you for this explanation. It all makes sense now. :) ( And I think they are GREAT!! :D )
+Thomas Fuhrmann Thank you very much for the explanation, now their laugh makes sense. They are great performers, but they do need a good English teacher to improve their pronunciation ;-)
The blonde speaking is Angelika Bachmann, the other violinist is Iris Siegfried, the cellist is Sonja Lena Scmid, and the pianist is Anne-Monika von Twardowski, in case someone are interested ;)
I love this group solely through their videos and suffer from being on the wrong continent to see them in person. In other videos (eg, Wettstreit am Viert), Angelika Bachmann served so well as the "straight man" as she would step in only to have her bowing taken over by the others -- in every comedy act, the straight man is the underappreciated absolutely essential element of the act.
They make me want to go out and learn German! The number of hours they must have put in to make their playing seem so easy is staggering yet they seem like nice people who love their audience and love what they are doing. I can't say enough good things about them. I have watched some of their videos a dozen times.
My immediate reaction was one of irony. Salut Salon members are German. The song, written in 1939, was used by the Allies (and maybe primarily British) throughout WWII as we were fighting the Germans -- Wikipedia reports it being played to celebrate the liberation of Amsterdam. This was a hopeful song of Germany's enemies that the soldiers they were sending away to fight against Germany would one day return, which by necessity meant that the Germans' hopeful songs of their soldiers returning would need to have all failed. Such is war. But that was all much more than half a century ago. We have all built a new world where the old animosities should no longer exist. Regardless of our nationality, we have our friends who must leave us for whatever reason and whom we hope to one day see again. The hope is universal, the sentiment is universal, so the song must necessarily also become universal. Wir geben dieses Lied dem ganzen Welt!
In the movie "Das Boot" the crew sing the Tipperary song to make fun of one of their Nazi officer. And allegedly the Allies loved the German "Lili Marleen" song.
They meant no disrespect. From the beginning of the videoclip, all 4 of them started to giggle. They were tired after putting on a long show. My translation is probably bad, but the blonde woman began talking about their next show. The next show is going to be “next year”. Suddenly it seemed like she forgot what year they were in. That is when she began to laugh hysterically.
There is nothing more infectious than laughter. Especially a group of people laughing - even at something very, very stupid. No idea what causes it, but I am sitting here alone, depressed, bored.... and this made me laugh..... Genuine joy is simply fun to be around - or even watch on the net.
I was crying from laughter by the end. Subscribing to this channel, can't find their DVD on streaming I can pay for in the USA. Emailing this to every penpal I have plus their video "Wettstreit zu viert".. another howler. These gals are brilliant.
You can tell that it was probably the end of the show. From the beginning of this videoclip, all 4 of them were all giggling. Probably because they were all tired. Tired people usually laugh easily. I am probably making a bad translation, but this blonde girl was talking about their next show “next year”. Suddenly she couldn’t remember the year it was, so she began to laugh hysterically.
When the blond woman talked to the audience she told them where the next concert will be. And while she was talking, she wondered if it is next year because she forgot which year actually is.
You can see from the beginning of this videoclip that all 4 girls were beginning to giggle. Probably because they were very tired. I think they were at the end of that show. My translation is probably terrible, but the blonde lady was talking about their next show. The next show will be “next year”. Suddenly she couldn’t remember what year they were in, and she began to laugh hysterically. She has a very contagious laugh. I’m sure that my translation is inaccurate. But laughter like that is always soothing for the soul.
I can't understand what they're saying to the audience. Anyway it was a very contagious laugh. Could someone explain why they started laughing and what they said??? Thank you.
Fantastic video! Their laughs are genuine and that transmit a wonderful feeling of happiness. Thanks a lot for this!

Thank you for that! I love this video, and have wondered what prompted the laughter. You just made it even better for me!

I agree 100% . But why that hysterical laughing? What is funny? Isnt it disrespect for those who did not manage to meat again?
