  • Join us tonight for open discussion about a very popular Space sub-theme, M-TRON.
In an effort to increase interactivity, LEGO introduced magnets in the next Space theme, M:Tron. After the introduction of Space Police, M:Tron was probably conceived as the space equivalent of a fire brigade, although in the United States the theme has been marketed as a mining faction, even changing the names of the sets for the American audience to reflect this. Vehicles in this set, distinctive for their red hulls, gray trim and neon-green canopies, are devoted primarily to repair and rescue operations. They often featured crane-like attachments with magnets for picking up small cargo and tool boxes. These boxes, unfortunately, were generally not interchangeable.
M:Tron was the first major Space theme that did not include a base of any kind; all sets were vehicles.

M:Tron was also the last space theme to carry the LEGOLAND banner. LEGO System was the name used starting in 1992.
The most popular sets included the Stellar Recon Voyager (or Rescue Star Cruiser outside the United States) and Mega Core Magnetizer (or Mobile Recovery Centre outside the United States). The Mega Core Magnetizer was the M:Tron's mobile base, that served as a home, repair station, and launching/landing center.

Good chat. It's fun to dive back into these themes having mainly enjoyed them through catalogues rather than in person. Its easy to miss a lot of the functionality.

Very important theme to me. Got me out of my dark age, way back in 1990..

Loving this whole series, looking back at set series from my childhood.
I recently retrieved my M:Tron sets from my parents attic after 25 years. I’d like to finally complete the whole series if I can…that Magnetiser is pretty expensive now though.

The 6811 was among the first 3 sets I have ever owned as a six year old in 1990. It remained the only M-Tron set in my collection but I'm currently on a 1979 to 1990 space shopping spree and therefore just bought a used but complete 6956 incl. box and manual. This was triggered by the release of the 10497 which I bought a month ago. This in turn then triggered the purchase of two other retro space sets (40712 & 40580) and the aforementioned shopping spree. I will keep those retro sets sealed. I also already bought the sets 918, 920, 6703, 6884, 6929, 6930, 6932 & 6980 and all of them are in good complete condition with their respective boxes and manuals. I've yet to get the 6811 again, but it's on my eBay watch list haha. I'm far from done here. The final boss is gonna be the 6990.
