@paulspydar - No problem. You are right that the "photo-session" left the UK no other option. Argentinians say that the whole thing lasted only a few seconds and was not agreed with the supreme commander, but one of the photographers managed to take photos, which were published and we all know the rest...

"honour" you see... forgive me for not understanding - I am but a poor sod...
Argentina also improvised, as the invasion had been planned for at least one year later. But the people of Argentina rebelled on March, 1982, and then the military government decided to invade these islands as a diversion.
Officially, at least. It has been asserted by a huge number of eyewitness accounts that Argentine casualties were significantly higher than what is stated today
One can safely say those claims are totally bogus. If it was true it could not stay hidden in Argentina , not like soldiers don't have any friends, family etc
I'm neither British nor Argentine but after reading the history I have to say that Britain's claims are more compelling than Argentina's. This constant claim that Britain stole the islands from Argentina makes no sense. Britain has had a presence on the islands over a hundred years before Argentina even existed as a country. And Argentina's entire claim is based on their "inheritance" from Spain when it was Spain who just took the islands from England by force. (And then returned them again.)
glickle: Great Britain claimed those island long before Spain.(1765 I think) They left but by the time the Argentinian were living there they were doing it with Great Britain's consent..Luis Vernet was named Administrator of the islands by the British council.. Luis Vernet was an Argentinian that wrote a letter to the British asking permission to live in the islands. ( his letter to the British council are published you can find them if you study that part of the history) Great Britain gave him the permit and permission to bring people to live in the islands.. Later on Great Britain gave him licenses for hunting and fishing and agreed that they should developed and cultivate the islands. At that time Great Britain was fighting the USA colonies. Afterwards they returned and rescinded Vernet's contract or permission. He refused to leave the islands claiming he brought people and development.. Great Britain them kicked him out. Since then they been arguing possession but they never had possession ( they do not even have a single document that could validate their claim) of those islands and they should never have. That is why I do not understand why the decolonization committee wants both country to negotiate..There is nothing to negotiate those islands are British for over 400 years and there is enough proof of it..
@@emmanuelzepernick7209 In addition, one claim by Argentina is that they "inherited" the Spanish claim. That has no basis in any principle of international law. While Spain could have bequeathed land to Argentina during the process that made Argentina a country, Spain couldn't gift Argentina a land claim that was in dispute. That's the way an international court would see it.

Perhaps we annihilate ourselves, perhaps we unify and lose a need for practicing warfare. I’ve read that a reason that Europeans became particularly skilled in the profession of arms before the people of other continents was that European nation states were almost continuously fighting limited wars against each other. Supposedly, other continents were more or less unified along geographic boundaries and the people there just spent less time fighting each other than the Europeans.

This is why all warships now have falankes defence systems. American or Russian ships would not have done any better. Sadly as a Brit the Argitinians did well with good equipment, means the British did better no 3 world nation win here.
@A Sorry mate, but US forces are not perfect. That's not to degrade both past and present US forces. They did Europe a magnificent service during world war 2. However, during the invasion of Grenada, it was a classic example of how not to conduct an invasion. The intelligence was so bad that the lads on the ground had to use tourist maps and even had to raid Esso petrol (that's gas stations for our American cousins), with military coordinates handwritten on them. It still didn't prevent US forces attacking and killing their own men with airstrikes. America given the same equipment and resources couldn't have done any better during the Falklands.
Correction: It was a naval war fought at times on land as a diversion. The object was freedom of the seas to conduct our world commerce without interference. We got that PLUS the Brits out of the Great Lakes region which they were supposed to have vacated in 1783 but didn't. With New Orleans we controlled the Mississippi which is exactly like controlling the English Channel to UK. Big defeat for the British because it meant the USA established hegemony of North America & Western Hemisphere.
So America's first act was to try to invade Canada, which failed. They had initial success at sea against smaller British frigates, but by the end of the war the RN had imposed a blockade which led the New England traders to push the US gevernment for a peace treaty as they were facing bankruptcy. Plus the Battle of New Orleans took place after the peace treaty had been signed, so had no actual effect on the outcome of the war.
I doubt the Wainwright story because MacArthur was kind to him after the war and made sure he was on the USS Missouri for surrender. Wainwright thought he might be court martialed because he did disobey orders not to surrender and he worried about that while imprisoned. But Mac was generous. Why would Wainwright be entitled to a CMOH? Where was bravery above and beyond the cause of duty? It demeans the meaning of the medal because what he did was what officers do when defeated.
contd) Control of the Mississippi and elimination of British remnants around the Great Lake regions was absolutely vital to subsequent American Western expansion out of the confines of the original 13 colonies and trans-Alleghany region. We know as "Manifest Destiny" and resulted in the shape and size of US as you see today and not the confined area of the revolution. New Orleans controls the Mississippi's mouth and that's why we had to beat the British soldiers who beat Napoleon in that battle.
Yes, general,, the sun has finally set on the empire, 'ol boy. Take your gin and tonic and watch the sunset just fade away. As the eagle soars over Big Ben and drops a plop on Westminister.as a token of our esteem for ya all.
America's War of 1812 was fought over the principle of "freedom of the seas." The land battles were secondary. American naval battles were raged in British home waters and against British coastal cities. This was done in conjunction with Napoleon's war on land and sea. America won its war aims, namely no more impressments of American seamen and no further interference with our freedom of the seas to conduct commerce with continental Europe. Also, America got control of the Mississippi River
You really love to twist a few events in history to become "facts". How many naval battles were in British home waters? Precisely one US raid. What happened to the USN in the end? It was bottled up by a British blockade, and the rich American merchants who wanted the war in the first place lobbied the US government to seek a peace treaty, as trade and customs revenue fell precipitously.
Winston was ignored in pre-1939 peacetime and you got War. Now, you say it was wise to ignore him post-1945 peacetime. And did Attlee, the socialist, provide Nirvana? Must be "no" because the Brits brought Churchill back in 1952. Winston wasn't responsible for the misery of WW2. He alone warned against Hitler and if listened to maybe WW2 could have been prevented. But my point is he was loyal to Britain, but the British showed extreme disloyality to him. Stunning character trait of British.
I have always accepted that the falkland brits belong to britain and after a referendum that most falkland peoples wants to belong to britian - this a a fair democratic vote of the poeple and must accepted by all sides. But what I never had understood that the brits never accepted that german people after world war 1 - also voted democratic - belong to germany - also austrians wants to go germany - Why did the brits dont accept this? Consequence of this was also WW2
An exception doesn't negate the rule. Of course there are fuckup officers. I encountered them, too. Was the other US officer present during the "offense"? What kind of witness was he if he wasn't there? You assume your side of the story and I want proof of the offense. Hell, if conduct was illegal, then why would the US not want to punish offender? But there is such a thing as due process. And this must be followed. It's also one thing to know and another to be able to prove. You God?
We found out the bugger was actually our free breakfast and we were expected to add our spit to reconstitute it. They actually sent up a knife and fork.with bugger instructions We were told it should turn bright green when ready for consumption. In American hotel rooms we place a chocolate on the pillow. Big cultural difference. You can be sure we ate at Burger King during our stay thereafter. I could tell you lots of horror tales we encountered. But I don't want to sicken you.

I browsed through, something to do with some Americans claiming they won it for us (Falklands) or something
MrLaizard And how do you work that out?
I didn't know that the "Atlantic Conveyor" had a sister or similar ship called the "Atlantic Causeway". This documentary has images that I had not seen in other documentaries or news
Ditto, much footage onboard RN ships i had never seen before. Probably was not worth broadcasting at the time but was held in the archive for the future, we, in the future, are now enjoying, getting invlovled in, being sad with those images.

i felt sorry for all the sailors that died on the Belgrano..but hey, World war two battle cruiser Versus Nuclear Submarine? only one outcome i'm afraid but at least it saved a lot of Argentinian and British lives because of that one action. the Argentine Navy never came out again.

@paulspydar - No problem. You are right that the "photo-session" left the UK no other option. Argentinians say that the whole thing lasted only a few seconds and was not agreed with the supreme commander, but one of the photographers managed to take photos, which were published and we all know the rest...

How many other countries could send bombers 8,000 miles to bomb a target??
The US and Soviet Union, perhaps.
The British should have sent some warships to protect their fleet. 😄
Ex HMS Plymouth, great footage, some I haven't seen before.
That is Battle for Falklands, but is not all documentary? where is the other part?
Argentina also improvised, as the invasion had been planned for at least one year later. But the people of Argentina rebelled on March, 1982, and then the military government decided to invade these islands as a diversion.

Officially, at least. It has been asserted by a huge number of eyewitness accounts that Argentine casualties were significantly higher than what is stated today
One can safely say those claims are totally bogus. If it was true it could not stay hidden in Argentina , not like soldiers don't have any friends, family etc
The photos of dead Argentinians lined up on the airport road disagrees with you.
If we had our two big carriers HMS Eagle and HMS Ark Royal plus Bulwark, Hermes and Invinsible the Argies wouldn't have invaded the islands.
Show weakness and have politicians run your armed forces and this is what happens, keep politicians out of military matters.
I am British and you are right.

In addition, one claim by Argentina is that they "inherited" the Spanish claim. That has no basis in any principle of international law. While Spain could have bequeathed land to Argentina during the process that made Argentina a country, Spain couldn't gift Argentina a land claim that was in dispute. That's the way an international court would see it.
@@roberteugene7295
The aborigins could claim with the same logic that the whole land called Argentina belonged to them.

Only God can end war. So if there is no God.... what then?
Perhaps we annihilate ourselves, perhaps we unify and lose a need for practicing warfare.
I’ve read that a reason that Europeans became particularly skilled in the profession of arms before the people of other continents was that European nation states were almost continuously fighting limited wars against each other. Supposedly, other continents were more or less unified along geographic boundaries and the people there just spent less time fighting each other than the Europeans.
@@randbarrett8706 - Annalisation is hardly a desired solution to end war. Is God not ending it more desirable? Except we are not 'allowed' to think that, because God has been canceled - yep, cancel culture is not new.
Jimmy, did you know I lived and grew up in Oakland? Where have you been? Under a rock? It's fun imagining you crawling out from a rock, blinking your beady eyes, and hissing at the world with drool out the corners of your mouth. Hi again Jimmy! I really, really miss you and your Vietnamese chitchat. Bet you have carbuncles like Marx? He kept complaining how he was going to get back at the world for having his carbuncles. This is why all warships now have falankes defence systems. American or Russian ships would not have done any better. Sadly as a Brit the Argitinians did well with good equipment, means the British did better no 3 world nation win here.
@A True maybe I didt phrase it right I ment individual ships, you certainly could have over whelmed them.
Hey Ed the talking horse: Your buddy Castro is now just a vegetable. Please accept my big whoppie, dearie.
Plus the Battle of New Orleans took place after the peace treaty had been signed, so had no actual effect on the outcome of the war.

the falkland Islands have been British since before Argentina was even a recognised country
That seems reasonable.
We need more aircraft carriers. We wouldn't have lost all those ships with a bit of top cover. Tory Cuts. I'd rather have carriers than nukes.
We have just commissioned 2. And we let the yanks deal with power projection anyway. Trident is a huge bargaining chip in the world game
We now have 2. HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales.

But who's talking about the a4's and the dauntless? i don't want a war or nothing like that
contd) Control of the Mississippi and elimination of British remnants around the Great Lake regions was absolutely vital to subsequent American Western expansion out of the confines of the original 13 colonies and trans-Alleghany region.
“America won its war aims”
Because Britain had stopped press ganging sailers before the war had even started

You God?
