@@misterasterisco5217 “Oil fields” and “Antarctica”. Oh here we go. Let’s pretend that you’re right and the U.K. is only interested in oil! In which case, please can you give a believable explanation why the British decided let go of oil rich Nigeria, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and other such places without a fight? By the way, there is a fife breve between these colonies and the Falklands. You may not have noticed the massively oil rich ex colonies were and still are, produce billions of barrels of oil per day. All that lovely oil and none are going to the British coffers. The Falklands produced and will produce.....wait for it.......I have the answer. One moment, it’s right here....are you ready??....NONE!!! When you look for your answer to try and substantiate your bullsh1t, will you please try to do so by citing some actual facts? Or will that be too difficult for you?
Are you also able to provide a viable believable explanation why the British chose only a company of Royal Marines, to defend such a valuable oil reserve commodity that they were later willing to spend millions and a huge task force to retake? Because not putting a huge garrison there before 1982 will make sense and give some substantiation to why the British foreign and commonwealth office were seeking to accommodate Argentina including discussing “lease back” options and were trying to persuade the Kelpers to accept Argentinian sovereignty in some form. Because you see Artersico, I can direct you to prime sources from both sides which is substantial evidence including documentary EVIDENCE which proves this.
So for you to substantiate your conspiracy theory and prove that the whole thing was about oil, please can you cite documentary evidence? When I say documentary evidence; I don’t mean a link to some conspiracy website where the unsubstantiated lie is merely repeated without the tiniest shred of proof but pretending it’s the truth. I mean primary source evidence from minutes or government communiques from 1982.
I doubt you will find any. So instead, I would like you to take off your tin foil hat and try using cognitive reasoning then drawing your conclusions. That means reasoning based on the evidence, instead of approaching the subject with your cynical already held suspicions and then you go looking for the flimsiest of evidence to try and somehow, substantiate this rubbish without looking at all the other evidence. It’s called the eureka syndrome. Only looking for what you want to see and finding something slightly resembling what you’re looking for, while completely ignoring the huge white elephant of proof sitting in the room which tells another story.

@@Frankszky1923 There was no Argentine back then. The United Provinces of Rio de la Plata instead. "The United Provinces attempted to control the islands through commerce, granting fishing and hunting rights to Jorge Pacheco in 1824. Pacheco's partner Luis Vernet established a toehold in the islands in 1826 and a fledgling colony in 1828. He also visited the British consulate in 1826, 1828 and 1829 seeking endorsement of his venture and a garrison. In 1829, he sought a naval vessel from the United Provinces to protect his colony but as none were available he was appointed Military and Civil Commander, prompting British protests.Attempts to regulate fishing and sealing led to conflict with the United States and the Lexington raid of 1831. With the colony in disarray, Major Esteban Mestivier was tasked to set up a penal colony but was murdered in a mutiny shortly after arriving in 1832. Protests at Mestivier's appointment received no response and so the British dispatched a naval squadron to re-establish British rule."

Want to know something? Argentines surrendered in their thousands to very few UK troops. Soldiers don't fight for a rag on a pole and a patriotic ideal but to stay alive, for their fellow soldiers and for the survival of their people. Argentinian soldiers in their memoirs said this cold place wasn't home. Thats what they fought for. A lump of rock and an old colonal dispute. But the UK troops ffought for the right of a people to live in THEIR country where they were born without fascist rule.

@@misterasterisco5217 two things. You’ve provided NO proof whatsoever, that the British fought for oil. Why? HOW did you come to conclude that the fight was over oil? If you’ve looked at FACTS and EVIDENCE then cut snd paste it and show me here. If not then all you’ve achieved is to show the world that you’re another one of these mindless conspiracy theorists who believe the idle baseless Bullsh1t often repeated in conspiracy sites. Yes. And Elvis is still alive and a member of the Illuminati.
Funny how you mentioned “Vietnam era” hardware. Didn’t Vietnam defeat a superpower with bamboo, Kalashnikov’s tenacity and courage? The Vietnamese could only dream of the modern equipment in the arsenals of Argentina’s military who fought a regional power on their own doorstep. Vietnamese people can only laugh at the macho boasting from the keyboards of your neighbours, yet the Armada Republica Argentina, slinked back to the safety of their ports and hid away while the rest of the armed forces defended so called “Argentina”. Why?
Would you like some facts? The British had to try and project their war from halfway around the world. That meant the British were EXTREMELY restricted in what they could take and what they were able to do. They were the assaulting forces in situations that normal convention dictates the MINIMUM ratio of combat troops should be 3:1. But the British were throwing themselves into well established well placed formidable defensive positions with the limited amount of infantry that a task force could convey AND sustain. That meant . The U.K. could only put 6000 infantry combatants to face 11,000 garrison troops where even the potato peelers in the kitchens could pick up guns and fire back.
Talking about firing back. You think the british were better equipped? Why don’t you do something for the first time before responding. RESEARCH!!!!! Google the standard issue FAL rifle and then compare it to the British SLR. The same Belgian weapon? NO!! The U.K. had the semi auto version and faced Argentinians shooting at them with the FULL AUTOMATIC version which was MUCH better in defensive warfare and can put many more rounds down towards the enemy. Don’t listen to the excuses and conspiracies. Research the excellent US manufactured night vision goggles that the Argentinian military had compared to the poor quality heavier British versions which were limited issue. Take a look at the quality of israeli cold weather parkas and compare them to the cotton smocks worn by the U.K. forces. Seriously. Compare the British DMS boot with the United States manufactured fully waterproof high legs that every Argentinian soldier possessed. In fact, after goose green, some paratroopers were replacing their own boots with the ones taken from dead Argentinians and that’s a fact. Have you compared the few aircraft that the British were able to put into that theatre then look at the numbers and quality that the Argentinian airforce possessed? The British could only sustain a small number of multi role Harriers that were only just supersonic. Against a large fleet of hundreds of strike aircraft, many that were in the arsenals of France, the USA and Israel. The attrition alone could have destroyed British chances. When an Argentinian pilot would need only do one sortie and “tag team” to his comrades to keep oncoming one after the other, the 42 British pilots would have to do fifty sorties each to keep up air cover. They were exhausted. If half the aircraft from the carriers are shot down, the British couldn’t replace them and were left to fight with 20 against an airforce that still had hundreds of fighters and pilots only a few hundred miles away.
Have you ever read “No Picnic”? I mean the book, not the twisted lying Viveza Criolla Argentinian rebranding of the meaning. The book highlights these disadvantages. Julian Thompson told his commanders BEFORE THEY DISEMBARKED, that it wasn’t going to be a picnic. It has NOTHING to do with so called “Argentinian surprises”. The British expected to lose more. Much more. But the differences in military philosophy can be surmised by this. The U.K. infantry had to “yomp”’as the marines call it, 90 kilometres carrying 40 kilos on their backs over mountains and bogs, sleeping forms few hours in hastily dug fox holes in soaking cold water that froze to their bodies and feet in conditions that drove Argentinian special forces to take shelter in a house (Top Malo) in the middle of a combat zone, without posting a guard, because it was “too cold”. When menedez realised that the “real landings” weren’t going to happen near Stanley and that the British land forces that disembarked in San Carlos was NOT a feint and the main assault had marched those distances over what the Argentinian strategic planners had calculated was impossible ground to move vast numbers of troops on foot, and he relied on the calibre of his men and the formidability of their defences in the mountains, then was shocked to find that they were being taken after only a few hours of combat. When you look at the picture of Moore and Menedez, meeting during the surrender and you compare one dirty,’unshaven disheveled tired general who shared the same rations, deprivations and dangers with his men against a clean, close shaven oiled haired immaculately dressed well rested amateur who slept in a bed in a heated house and hadn’t even visited his forwards positions once to speak with his troops, inspect his defences and encourage his officers.
One staff officer witnessed the last conversation Mendez had with galtierri when the dictator was shouting and calling him and his men cowards telling Mendez to leave his positions and fight. Mendez’s reply was “But Snr Presdente, you don’t realise WHAT we’re fighting against here”. That’s when you realises why argentina lost.
If you don’t believe me then why don’t you click innthe attached and read the citations from these military studies that are NOT British or Argentinian

+paul weston well, I didn't know that about Haig; I knew he was flying back & forth, trying to be the new Henry Kissinger in shuttle diplomacy, but not that he was ready to sell out the Islanders for his own glory.
He found out pretty quickly that neither side was going to back down, especially the British. Every member of his delegation that I saw being interviewed on programs about that time mentioned specifically about realizing very fast that the British meant business, and were not hiding their suspicion of the Americans, like was it going to be another Suez? No backup from the US?
But our defense secretary was behind Britain all the way & made sure certain things useful to the British got to them.

Being realistic, they have been defeated in war and the nations they held were far less powerful or not nations at all.
Hell, USA didn't exist under Britain. Britain is one of the main colonizers of North America. As soon as any nation began growing more powerful, Britain basically lost control or began allowing more autonomy to maintain control in writing but not in reality.
As for other nations of approximate size to the U.K. with large empires, the French had large scale colonization efforts, but to a lesser scale as the French did not focus as much on Navy.
Germany took most of Europe, though held it for far less time.

@madjaime2007 you are right in something, but the most of the pro were in the frontier with chile. Chile threatened was the key for the surrender. The generals is a cuestion apart, they were in conflict when galtieri said to menendez he would be punished under the war code if he surrender, this one choose to betray him. In the end menedes save his life from galtieri. Read more and you will se that menendes never order the counter attack or put the troops on the shores.

    CLANDESTINE HELP
Secret for 30 years, the files reveal Thatcher’s political maneuvering during other events in 1982, including the Iran-Iraq war, the imposition of military rule in Poland and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon.
They also show that British attitudes to its U.S. ally were less deferential than the prime minister’s letters to Reagan suggest.
In a transcript of a telephone conversation between Thatcher and her foreign minister, the prime minister criticized Reagan’s communication style, describing a message from the president as “so vague I didn’t think it was worth reading when it came in at half-eleven last night”.
In another file, she noted “the US just does not realize the resentment she is causing in the Middle East”, while a Foreign Office briefing on Reagan described the actor-turned-politician as “knowing much less than he seems to”.
However, one document showed how deeply indebted British officials felt to the United States for its “clandestine help” during the Falklands war; help that the United States was anxious be kept secret.

“The US have made it clear that they do not wish to reveal publicly the extent of the help with which they are providing us. They are very much worried about the effects on their relations with South America. We must accept this as a fact of life,” a Ministry of Defense letter said.
The United States assisted Britain with intelligence and communications facilities as well as with military equipment such as munitions, the document said, confirming information already in the public domain.
Emblazoned with the words SECRET and CONFIDENTIAL, many of the 6,000 declassified files will prove a treasure trove for history students keen on ferreting out hitherto unknown details of the major political events of 1982, said records specialist Demissie.
“Everything comes out in the end,” he said.

The UN is willing to accept independence OR integration with a neighbouring country OR integration with the colonial metropolitan country OR free association with another country, as reasonable outcomes from decolonisation.
In each case, THIS HAS BEEN DONE WITH THE EXPLICIT APPROVAL OF THE PEOPLE OF THE TERRITORY, through election or plebiscite. The only exception, since the establishment of the Special Committee on Decolonisation, has been Hong Kong. Geography has no bearing.

The Argentins never stood a chance just like their bankrupt dictatorship. They wer e not prepered, lacked anti-ship and anti-air capability on the island, their aircraft lacked the range and endurance to support the islands. The war proved how importans is the inteligence, satellite reconnaissance and air power. Also revealed that UK despite victorious is no more a military power it once have been.

Wow. What an amazing coincidence!!! I lived for many years in East London in South Africa, I as well as many UK citizens got on very well with the Afrikaaner. And I speak a little Afrikaans. They would be the last people to say that the crime of the concentration camps conducted by the "Khaki's" and Kitchiner was a deliberate act of "Genocide"'. History is very complicated. I refer to Junta's and dictators because from their mouths come lies that some today still choose to believe .

But answer me this. What legitimate historical right does Argentina have to be able to lay claim to the South Sandwhich Islands and South Georgia? Please explain? Is this not agressive territorial expansion? Naked imperialism? The exact thing that Argentinians accuse the British of being? "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones!!!"

@Eddieposted - You remember, once we discussed the issue of the age of Br. and Ar. soldiers and I quoted the data that the average age of the British was about 22, while in case of Argentinians it was 19. On the other hand there were 16 years old British soldiers, while the youngest Argentinians could have been 18 (born in 1963). Also anonther thing is the average age and the other is the number of soldiers of certain age. Anyway, most sources say the average age of the Br. soldiers was higher.

I was in Europe when this happened.
Everytime we saw a British soldier they would buy us a beer, and ask if we thought the US was going to help them fight Argentina.
We'd ask them why they needed help, and of course tell them we hadn't heard of any plans for the US to help them.
Stationed in W Germany, if the US did help it wouldnt be us. We had our mission no matter what happened anywhere else.
It just stuck out in my mind, because usually stand offish they were suddenly very friendly and talkative.
When the fighting did start we were surprised to hear they were having a hard time. Especially the Royal Navy. The French Exocet missile was very effective against their ships.

...there is no explicit reference to operative paragraph 6 of Resolution 1514 (see above) nor to maintaining “territorial integrity” of a divided country. The strongest point made by the Argentine government is that reference to the “interests of the population” implies “leaving aside the principle of self-determination” (see A/66/696,p.7), but in the light of diplomatic practices of constructive ambiguity this is insufficient to be regarded as endorsement of the Argentine claim to sovereignty.

I know what Robacio said. With due respect, he and BIM 5 didn't remain on the field of battle to count the dead, but retreated to Stanley. A comander who had suffered the humiliation of a defeat and of seeing his troops repatriated to the fatherland as prisoners in a ship (Canberra) that the Junta said had been sunk will say alot. The UK has a free press without government control. Thousands of casualties are impossible to hide, not even from their relatives. Robacio makes excuses.

@Arminevh They HOPED to lose a few ships but no military Operational plan survives contact with the enermy. When they desided to make landfall in San Carlos they knew they would lose ships.
Your missiles can't work as well as you can out at sea.
They had to postion warships so the would be the first ship attacked & sunk. Not the landing ships or Troop carriers. So they changed tactics as and when nessary included lose's to complete their mission.

It was taken back in 1833 after Argentinian settlers turned up on land that The British AND French had settled on in the 1760's after Captain John Strong landed there in 1690. When we returned after having been forcibly required to leave due to lack of funds due to war with America, the Argentinians's tiny presence voluntarily left without issue. This is purely a oil based claim by Argentina. While we first landed there, Argentinian's were busy massacring Patagonian natives. Same old same old..

@asasscd Yep would have cost the Argentine Navy, but then you have to fight and lose ships to win. When the Royal Navy landed at San Carlos it wasn't mined.Argentina beleved no one would take a fleet were their radars & Shipboard SAM systems would not work well. They would be very vulnerable to Air attack.A "Bomb Alley" so to speak.
So thats were the Bristish went.
They knew they would lose ships and a lot. That was the price of getting on shore.
Fear of lose should not initiate inaction in war.
