  • This is a story about our craziest travel adventure yet: getting trapped abroad during an international emergency. Come with us on a journey that crosses multiple borders in a desperate attempt to get back home.
We started our journey in Puerto Rico where had originally planned to travel to Guatemala to volunteer for an NGO called Niños de Guatemala. As innocent as everything started, things quickly changed for the worse.

I was in Puerto Rico almost the same time you were in Guatemala. I had almost the same mindset that you had, but my Oregonian wife bought the ticket to leave PR ASAP for me. I trusted my wife and I flu back to the States. Next day the same flight ticket was over 1000$. Even though PR haven’t close the airport, that was the save move. I safe money and tons of stress.

Oh really? Glad you made it out safe. The idea of them closing the airports while we were off the island really freaked us out. Honestly, we feel safer here than in Mexico or Guatemala. The government a handling things well here. Stay healthy! Un saludo. -Jim

Spanish and Go yes, closing the airport was our worst fear. Then, I learned that the Governor doesn’t have the power to close it. That is interesting!! I should’ve been in Manatí for two weeks, but the thing that I was supposed to do was canceled. The rental car and Airbnb refunds were easy. Hopefully you didn’t lost too much money changing your plans.

I came to Guatemala from Canada last Jan. The lockdown began in March. I'm in San Pedro, Lake Atitáin. My return flights been extended six times. It's now scheduled for Dec.21st. That will make it eleven months. Fantastic! I love it here. I couldn't be more comfortable or happy, and I've been taking Spanish lessons everyday. Update: more good news. I'll be here until May.

I'm a retired Canadian on vacation in San Pedro on Lake Aitilán, Guatemala. I had to make the exact same decisions as you, at exactly the same time. It looked to me that the President had things under excellent control here. I called home and said: I'm taking a stand here for better or for worse. I didn't want to risk becoming a carrier from airport contact. I booked a beautiful room overlooking the lake, stocked up with food. I feel extremely safe and worry free. I turned down a government flight. I'm planning on staying here in peaceful paradise until August, studying Spanish everyday. Ps: The President announced an automatic extension for foreign visas.

I was going through the same thing at the same time! Twist - I got food poisoning on Friday night, slept 16 hours on Saturday, and woke up Sunday to learn the processions were cancelled. I slept through "the day everything changed." Thankfully, my regularly scheduled return flight was the last Delta flight out on Monday afternoon. Our pilot walked on the plane with an enormous bag of Zacapa, so I figure he knew he wouldn't be back to Guatemala for a while. Your story is very well told and I appreciate all the work that went into editing and presenting it. I believe I would have done the exact same thing you did. People who crossed to Mexico early on had the best outcomes.

Long story-short, we managed to get out through the Mexico borders after finding a FB group with American citizens stucked like us (shout out to Coca Missi Avila for sharing the group.) Definitely a trip we'll never forget! 🥴😁

I was in Guatemala too! 😱 I went through the Tapachula and Guadalajara airport just after you both and it sounds like they increased their screening a bit only days after from my experience. I had to pass through 6 airports on my way back to my home in Canada and surprisingly the measures in Mexico were greater than those in the Canadian airports! I find it so funny because socially Canada is doing a lot more right now than Mexico.
Glad you both made it home! I understand the stress and exhaustion! 🏠

I was in Antigua and my flight was scheduled to leave for Cancun on the 17th. when I heard the president's announcement I grabbed an Uber late on the 16th and went 5 hours to the Mexican border and then took a 22-hour bus from Chiapas to Cancun. I'm back in Minneapolis now where I live because I left Cancun the next day instead of waiting for my flight which was scheduled a week later. My uber was the equivalent of $130 U.S.

Please excuse my unsettled thumb for replying to this particular comment.(At this very late hour and date😅). Perdon. But, the Philippines have been colonized by Spaniards way way back, that is why we have those terms.. Most of the Filipino words were drawn from Spanish words. We actually have catholic schools which included learning Spanish in their curriculum.
Maybe you could visit Philippines sometimes(but not now, ofcourse), particularly Zamboanga they speak the language almost the same as Spanish.
PS.thank you for your channel. Have been learning a lot. Thank you for not being too serious😁😅. Hope you too are fine in this crazy time.
PS.to PS. I'm also not aware before this pandemic that 'quarantine' is the term for my daily routine.😁😅.

Thanks for sharing and I’m happy you’re both home after that mission. Actually none of the states are allowed to close airports as that’s control by the FAA. What the governor of Puerto Rico wanted to do was close all other airport and keep Luis Muñoz Marin Open as it would be easier to keep control and scanning everyone that comes into the island. This was a great idea. kudos to her for being one of the only governors to act quickly in hopes to control the spreading of COVID19. New York City is terrible right now and Florida will be next as everyone here including the governors are too relaxed. At this point it’s better to be in P.R., they have a good handle on the situation. 🙏🏽

Thanks for clarifying that! I think that was a very smart decision too. Puerto Rico has been through so much... I'm glad they were ready to take this seriously early on. That decision likely saved a lot of lives. Thanks for watching! Stay healthy! -Jim

    • @IamMaria_O

Spanish and Go You’re welcome. I learned that via CBS news. Since people were panicking about the airports closing a CBS reporter reached out in reference to PR governors request of shutting down airports and he was informed that’s not a decision that comes from the governor those requests go to the FAA and they are the ones who can decide. Her request was granted as she only wanted one airport opened. Honestly, it was a great decision and I am so happy it was granted. Puerto Rico has been an example to the states. As we are all suffering a lot w the outbreaks. Stay safe and again thanks for sharing. You’re both amazing! Listening to your story was overwhelming I can’t imagine going through that. 🙏🏽 It worked out better in the end, from Mexico City to Atlanta, Puerto Rico. 🙌🏽

Well you were not the only ones trapped. And each country starts thinking ahead before a catastrophe. So the government of Guatemala did best to protect the nation and also Guatemala took in serious matters the foreigners to help them in case they were sick. Guatemala built 3 additional temporary hospitals to help people with coronavirus and including the foreigners. But it is very painful situation but need understand
But hope after everything calm down and safe you comeback to Guatemala since we are friendly country and also we have the best Spanish schools to learn Spanish with real Spain teachers and Guatemala teachers but with the root of Spain schools.

Viva Mexico! But yes, the federal response by the US and Mexico to this pandemic has been abysmal.
Earlier I had thought of traveling from Houston to Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas because I know that the infection rate there should be a fraction of what it will be here...and I have some family there that are physicians. But I waited too long.

The US did let them close the other airports. The only one open is the main airport you arrived at. Puerto Rice started the curfew the first week of March compared to the USA. You did get checked at the the airport. Also they have thermal scan cameras in the airport of Puerto Rico measuring temperatures. You didn’t give much credit to Puerto Rico.

Guatemala is one of the countries with more Spanish schools in Latin America. I am not sure if the most number of school per capital, but I am almost sure that it's the case. The reason? Maybe you know it? I am curious to know. I watched one of your videos about Spanish dialects. I asked my old Spanish teacher from Guatemala and he told me that the definition of dialect in English did not make sense in Spanish. He went as far to saying that it could be taken as an offensive word if you tell someone from a Latin American country that they speak a Spanish dialect. Specifically in Guatemala where because of the many Mayan dialects, the word has a bad connotation. In case you go back, watch out and dont call their Spanish a dialect lol
