Remember, Christopher Nolan did most of the promoting himself because the actors weren't able to due to the strike. Money well earned
It's a free market, he negotiated it and everyone agreed. Good for him
So people don’t get upset when pop stars earn this money for a tour, but they get mad for someone working their ass off directing, producing etc for a film. Both are for the entertainment industry and a JOB. They earn for what they put out.
WB is crying right now
Why? They won in that deal.
Oh yeah
@@safwatnuman4297 How the hell did WB win in that deal lol
Barbie made more
@@WhipahSnapahwhat was the highest grossing movie of 2023?
And he deserves every single penny.
On the Greta Gerwig comparisons, it's worth pointing out that they are at different stages of their careers. She's only made a handful of movies and this is the first one to make a billion dollars, she's basically at the point Nolan was when he made The Dark Knight, not Oppenheimer, Nolan wasn't getting this kind of deal for TDK...
Why are we so obsessed with the specifics of how much money people make? So, yesterday we all just assumed Christopher Nolan is, at the very least, comfortably wealthy...and now we know he's actually very fucking comfortably wealthy. I don't understand the fascination. I really don't
I have a feeling that this isn’t necessarily Nolan’s individual paycheck, and that most of this money is actually being paid to his production company, Syncopy.
From what I have read there are only 4 people employed by that company and 2 of them are Nolan and his wife. Doesnt seem like much overhead
Nolan and Emma Thomas's production company Syncopy has only one rule: make every film a masterpiece
That might be true of Tenet wasn't absolute garbage.
@@isaacbeeby2528Tenet was awesome
Tenet was far from Nolan’s best work, but can we stop pretending that it was a flop in 2020 due to quality. It would not have been a billion dollar movie had it come out this year, but it would easily have made money. Maybe not The Dark Knight money, but close to Dunkirk.
Agreed, it would have easily made 6-700m
Taylor Swift earned far more for her last concert tour, but people don't like it when directors make money for some reason.
Damn did she really make that much money?
What the hell does she do with all that dough?
John is this close to getting why CEOs shouldn't be payed those obscene amounts of money
It's called asphalt John not Ash fault
David Heyman is the main producer of the Harry Potter films. Charles Roven wasn't even involved, but he did produce the Dark Knight trilogy and the DCEU films.
You get what you negotiate. Good for him
Nolan is a icon and he deserves his money the same way Margot Robbie who produce Barbie deserve the 50 million that she got
And he will likely dump most of it into his next film. Dudes a legend.
He does not have to, his films are fully funded by the studio.
I’m happy for him and wish I had the guts to do what he did. There’s a few people like him and Bill Burr that took a massive risk and went all into their craft and it paid off.
Let’s remember the studio made over a Billion dollars off of HIS hard work. He deserves SOME of that Billion dollar. And a 100 million is nothing to a Billion
100 million is nothing to a billion? It's literally 10% so it's quite alot.
It’s 10%..
Yeah, 10% is a good chunk. And NOBODY needs that kind of money, I don't care what you do. But hey, I'd prefer creatives making bank over CEOs who apparently can't afford to pay their workers above minimum wage
The studio didn't make a billion dollars, lol, the studio made around 45 percent of the box office at the very best, so he made around 42 percent of the profits. Good for him, and i don't know how you be so immature to think all the box office money goes to the producers, like aren't the cinema halls gonna Earn
@@momono6590That’s just box office ur talking about. Have to consider other distribution rights as well.
I'd rather it go to Nolan than the studio but would much prefer everyone who works on it get a percentage of the films success.
the people who had creative input, at least… but they should negotiate that compensation 👍
Makes sense, Nolan is the writer, director, and producer of the movie. Nolan bet on himself and won 🏆.
Thats whys he promotes his movies and tells audiences to go to the movies every release, doesn’t surprise me
wouldn’t he do that regardless of his cut? doesn’t he make his movies to be seen and enjoyed?
Let the actors and producers enjoy their moment in the sun...
I hate when people say soccer players earn too much when they are in the top 500 players in a trillion dollar sport. But the movie industry is in decline and struggling for regular good box office, so seems strange to pay a director so much money in this climate. I guess Hollywood feels Nolan is the last Hollywood movie star after Di Caprio’s movie flopped.
There are only two directors that are worth that much and more... Nolan and Villeneuve. They are true visionaries
Villenueve is not worth that much at all. Hell Nolan isn’t either. Spielberg, Cameron and Coppola are worth a lot more
Nolan's net worth is 1/20th that of Steven Spielberg and James Cameron made $350M on Avatar alone.
Can’t imagine you doing construction for work. I thought you was in your parents basement playing video games listening to U2 with Transformers hanging on your wall wearing Return of the Jedi t-shirt. Lol
John you knows it’s true! Lol
They are about release the movie in Japan for the first time so I think it might just push it to 1 billion.
Damn, well deserved. Can only remember Todd Phillips getting that much for directing Joker
Hunnid Mill ?!?!?! Why bro was smiling cheek to cheek every appearance.
Is Nolan the goat ???
Did John say Ashfalt? Asphalt? 😅
I am fine with artists and athletes making a lot of money. They do creative work that takes hard work to be good at and their work gives joy to lot of people. Hope they also pay it back in taxes.
And yet he doesn't have a smartphone!
I'm in the wrong fucking field. Need to sort this shit out IMMEDIATELY.
9:50 Loved this conversation!
The Tenet remark at 9:50 is a little undeserved as it was released during COVID in theaters and on the new MAX streaming platform that WB execs wanted to perform well for their bonuses. This decision by WB is what lead to the Nolan WB breakup and why Oppenheimer is distributed by Universal Pictures (maybe why the incentive contract was written the way it was written - to lure Nolan away from WB and any other studio).
With all that being said, Tenet was difficult to digest...
(And was worse when I threw it up - Bada Ting 🥁)
Tenet definitely would have made at least double what it did if it was released without covid.
7:58 I wanna be Kris Karr with that kind of paycheck 😂
This huge for mr Nolan
"Suck it, Dad!"
John Campea
0:33 2:06 Why does he say asphalt as "ash-fault" lol
Came here for this. I was laughing so hard. 😂
Every single dime well earnr
People wonder why movies theaters have gotten so expensive. The studios don't eat that money the audience does. You see it in the Box Office today with limited hits. To take a family of four to an evening movie with some popcorn and sodas get ready for some big $$$.
kris carr looks a bit like Mary E winstead😅
A lot like her
Ashfault. 😂😂😂
That's slang that only comes from years of hard work with assfault.
@@JaneSmith-so6hwI’ve worked in construction for 15 years and have never heard that. Maybe it’s a Canadian thing
With tickokers making millions for being silly, well deserved a husband and a father making this much for giving us cinema.
The only only issue with this wage Nolan got , take into consideration the cost of making the movie including the marketing. So what was the actual profit of Oppenheimer. ?? So if the director is actually earning maybe 25% of the overall profit and his wife making another significant percentage it kinda explains why so many actors and writers went on strike last year as these kind of wages sre not new. And so there it is. So many people are involved in making a movie and the pay for so many of these employees are terrible. It would be more understandable if the movie made 2 billion dollars or more then such a cheque would make more sense in my opinion.
Reys eyebrows with the hat..lol
So are we protesting block busters?
Congrats to Mr. Nolan(He deserved it for "Dark Knight" Series with a Best Actor for C. Bale any way(Ironically "Scarecrow" Murphy gets one this year and "Commissioner Gordon" Owens wins one the other year, as well as "Joker "Watkin P.. Thanks
Nolan earns every cent of that salary. Any other director doesn't make this movie. Yes, actors are essential. But Directors make the movie. Literally. Look at Jostice League vs. Snyder Cut. First take is idiotic.
If anyone deserves a bonus its Snyder. I don’t like his movies but I found out he didn’t get a cent for his cut of the movie. He just did it because he really wanted to release it. That is pretty respectable and plus the people he works with love him.
@@inshal6420Snyder doesn't deserve any bonus especially after Rebel Moon. He's closer to being Uwe Boll than he is to being Christopher Nolan.
@@FriendlyBatDoomSomeone had to say it, thank you. Snyder is a B movie director who gets to work with A list talent and budget.
@@FriendlyBatDoom i mean I don’t like his movie either but art is subjective. Just the fact that he pushed so hard for his cut of Justice League and filmed some scenes in his driveway is really respectable. Its inspiring to see an artist work so hard for their vision.
@@inshal6420 Okay yes art is subjective and the majority of the films have more negatives than positives and that fact. All his films are divisive and bloated because he can't cut out the fat. I will give you his JL cut since WB used a family tragedy to mess with his work by utilizing Wheadon. However with that being said this man cannot write to save his life. There is a reason why many of his films have 4 hour cuts because like u said earlier he can't cut fat without cutting into the essential plot. BVS, JL Watchmen and Rebel Moon all have this issue. It's so bad that the plot gets messed with. Snyder needs to just get over himself and stop bloating the story and make it cohesive for once. Dawn Of The Dead, Man of Steel, Watchmen Directors cut, 300 and Snyder cut are his only good films and he has no great films.
It’s a reason why Nolan left after Tenet didn’t do that well. He was adamant about still doing a release in theaters during the pandemic and while I’m sure part of it was to help theaters and keep that experience, there was a financial motive to do so. The majority of his backend is theater earnings and I guess didn’t want to wait a year to push it
Ashfault? This world is crazy.
0:29 how long ago was his construction job because isn't minimum wage STILL around 7 dollars an hour? Crazy!
Yep but in california its much higher
@davidjames579 ha oh canada 🇨🇦
Lucky man
It ain't luck.
English isn't my first language, but I'm pretty sure it's not called ashfault. 😀
"With great power, comes great responsibility."
And wealth is one of the greatest powers in existence.
John Locke was right
🔒
I agree that actors shouldn't get that much money for 2 months of work
Why not?
people only say a actor and a actress does not deserve the paycheck it they don't like the actor or actress or director.
A big reason Nolan was able to negotiate such a great deal for himself is because he left Warner Bros. Universal was willing to offer a percentage of gross revenues to get him to come work with them. That said, $100 million is an obscene amount of money for one person. My hope is that Nolan will elect to share some of this with Cillian Murphy and the other folks who helped make Oppenheimer so successful. If he does, we probably won’t hear about it.
I think back end pay is also included in most actors contracts, specially since the actors had taken a paycut for the movie.
Why should he share his money? I'm sure Cillian got a very nice pay
My goodness Kris Carr you are one of the most beautiful women in the world 😍
Simp
So the directors pay cost almost half the movie? No wonder movies are so expensive to make nowadays.
That’s not it at all. He was paid handsomely upfront I’m sure but these are bonuses paid by the studio as the film went about its theatrical run, not coming off its top line budget
I dont get these greedy holywood people, when you have 10 million dollars you already have everything. How can u even want more money. Doesnt it loose its entire purpuse when you already have so much. Why not donate the money to the directors that get nothing. Of course you can keep a lot of it like 10-20 mil but the rest i would just donate.
Why do you think it’s greedy for an artist to make a smart business deal?😂
@@safwatnuman4297 because no human being on earth needs that much money. I dont have anything against chris nolan getting all this Money. I only think in his Situation i wouldnt be happy about getting so much money, because ultimately it doesnt change shit im already rich as fuck. So why keep it? I know Lifestyles of most people would change when they had more money. I just think its sad...
WB made a deal with Nolan we'll move Dune and u get your awards as long as you come back
Nah he'll be staying with universal
@@davidjames579probably because it was counter programming.
Yeah, so Christopher Nolan every time he makes a movie just has this thing where he manages to get lots of money and Oscar buzz. Now that’s all well and good but it’s like you were saying I think that actor should get a bigger cut and why shouldn’t it be equally distributed? How is that in anyway? Ridiculous? I feel like that if every actor did get paid the same, we would probably have a lot more actors and actresses in the film industry, who actually enjoy their jobs and are passionate about it as opposed to all of the negative connotations that are tied to it, and we also wouldn’t have acting professors who are teaching these actors and actresses that are constantly shooting them down or downgrading them, but that’s just my opinion. But anyway, Christopher Nolan I am not at all surprised that he made so much off of this film because it was such a big hit. I just never personally watched it because I think it was $4 billion that didn’t need to be spent instead I would’ve went with a $200 million budget instead to produce the same film.
Hollywood greed. Pay that kind of money to teachers, emergency workers, truckers, the lifeblood of this country, not to people who eat entitlement for breakfast.
Delusional thinking.
Since when is it a studios job to pay for these things? Lol
Entertainment is the most important thing to humanity. Just look at the Roman Colosseum, and Shakespeare. We are willing to spend everything we have on being entertained.
Pretty disgusting when someone says it out loud.
Its the people decision to go to the movies. If you are so peeved about their pay then dont go to the movies spend that money elswhere.
I feel you but it doesn’t work like that. I can only suggest you stop paying for movies and donate those funds to teachers.
Welcome to America
Success and prosperity?
And when you go visit your dad he rkos you
He should not have gotten paid that much. That's actually unacceptable and kind of sick. Call me a hater or say I'm jealous idc. That's just disgusting. Have fun 👍
You are correct you are just jealous
So… The studio should have kept all the money and not paid him?
Are you okay with Taylor Swift being a billionaire?
@@Jonmad17🤔 Is she a Billionaire?
@@Jonmad17 no 😔
He's marketable name. Not a great director IMHO, but a gold marketing stamp that pretty much guarantees 500 mill to 1 bill gross. Fair that he should be paid accordingly.
HE AIN'T WORTH THAT MUCH MONEY ! I DON'T CARE WHAT MOVIES THESE DIRECTORS MAKE ! IT IS UTTERLY DISGUSTING !!! THANK GOD I NEVER SUPPORTED ANY OF HIS FILMS....SERIOUSLY !!!
calm down
You’re not a revolutionary, you’re just jealous. Don’t act like you wouldn’t want a payday like that, Nolan earned it fair and square.
U liked his movies, didn't you
We got someone who is a Barbie fan
I feel like movie directors/producers should make more than the actors, period. Because they’re literally in charge of the ENTIRE production.
But idk that’s just me.
Come on, John! Charles Roven did NOT produced the Harry Potter series. That’s David Heyman. Charles Roven produced Batman movies with the Nolans, also some of the Snyder DC movies.
He deserves it. Can't say the same for the producers of 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' and their inexplicably high salaries.
He deserves every bit of it. There are way too many mediocre directors and writers out there. making hundreds of GARBAGE films.. they should just fire all of them and just employ 20 directors and have them make 20 movies a year.
Good for him. I have zero issue with him getting paid for performance.
This happened only because Univeral wanted to secure Nolan by any means possible.
Yeah but the film made $1 billion and cost $200m production and marketing. It'll also make $millions more in VOD and blu ray.
never count anybody’s money…
I don't get what Kris meant by her saying WB didn't give him the same chances. They did. How else did he make Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenet? They even released Tenet in theaters when we all knew it would crash, due to the pandemic. He didn't even get screwed over by the previous WB regime. He left on principle, after what they did to all the movies releasing that year.
There's really no reason why he wouldn't go back WB after a couple more movies. Given the people that nearly ran the company into the ground are gone.
Well WB did release Barbie at the same time as Oppenheimer to screw up the chances of his movie becoming big, but unexpectedly created a phenomenon
Nolan was a jackass to WB. WB gave him what they wanted. If he wants to be a studio head, start your own damn studio.
@@movieman82usNah wb is a joke
Private whispers have to include Income Inequality. Income disparity between top-tier actors/directors and other industry professionals. But happily or sadly, it is what the entertainment market will bear. His Topps Series Card suggest he has collectively earned studios more than $6 billion in box office receipts. So, he is good risk for the studio. Nolan's agent negotiated well on behalf of the client.
"Green with envy' is a real medical condition. I currently in treatment.
He deserves every penny
Yea sorry, I don't care who you are NO BODY deserves that amount for one film. Godzilla minus ones entire budget was 15 million and they walked away with an Oscar also
But it didn't make a billon dollar's
Actually maybe those numbers should not be known .. that’s insane
glad he got paid so well for his worst movie. Oppenheimer is the most overrated movie I ever seen
$100 million. Outrageous
The studio made over a billion dollars off of his work. He deserves part of that Billion
@@ikexbankaithe studio made $480 , the. Cinema takes half.
