Great video! Upgraded my 15ALC6 to a 1 TB drive (Crucial CT1000P3PSSD8) and 20 GB RAM (Crucial CT16G4SFRA32A). Cloned the disk with the Crucial version of Acronis on a separate laptop, both drives on USB adaptors. (I've had mixed results with cloning a hot drive.) In the end, a little adjustment of the boot order was required Things went remarkably smoothly, but I'm from the MS-DOS days and am easily impressed. The computer seems to respond a little faster, even on simple things like loading a browser, with this upgrade. BTW: On the 15ALC6, the screws under the front of the keyboard are shorter. It looks like the RAM cover can just be pulled off, no need to fiddle with each of the supports. There is no area left for the SATA drive on this model, the space now taken up by a larger battery.
Perfect! I have the 15ABA7 and this process was exactly the same for mine. I'd got the back cover off, but had no idea that ram cover was removable. You've saved me a lot of time with this :)
Thanks. This also applied to my IdeaPad 3 15ALC6. I could not figure out where the ram slot was. Its been a while since I opened up a laptop, first time I've seen it with some sort of protective cover. I thought it was the soldered RAM. Also, other videos and guides for my model threw me off- showed a different motherboard for some reason. So I guess there are variations within the 15ALC6 models.
This is very useful Because i did not know where the ram should go, didnt know it is under the Protection Case at all, i am planning to upgrade mine to 16GB soon so this is very much Appreciated
A good, clear tutorial. Please advise on whether RAM addition makes the total dual core. Also please recommend a tutorial for using a SATA SSD alongside the NVMe.
Any idea if this model suffers from the hinge failure (plastic body cracking) that other Lenovo models suffer from? YT shows stacks of videos of failed hinges / bodywork but they are for previous models.
Hey James, thanks for the great tutorial. I have just purchased one of these laptops and using your recommendations above have upgraded it. You mention adding a 2.5 inch SSD to this laptop with a SATA cable. What type of cable would I need to do this and is it as simple to do as the other upgrades in this video? Thanks
Hi Norbert, you'll find the connection point (a small clip) near the top left screw hole where the battery sits. Ideally you don't want to clamp the cable under the battery. Instead the ribbon cable should sit above the battery and if needed be taped down. Hope this helps.
@@NotAnotherBonsaiChannel Hi, Thank you so much for your reply, I beleive I found it, but the additional SSD is still does not seems to be working. But it must be an issue in the settings now. Thanks again

hi james , could you tell if we can put 2 hard disks ( hdd beside the main ssd ) on this laptop or not ? Great, simple and very helpful video by the way ❤
He mentions the 2.5" drive bay and that we'd need to order the Lenovo SATA cable. This would be an SSD, and this makes this computer more usable - having a secondary storage device seems the best option. But for me, the soldered-on-RAM is a deal breaker.

What is the plastic pen looking tool called that you disconnected the battery with?
