- Image stabilization for photography and video is such a hot topic right now. Camera and lens manufacturers are racing to provide the sharpest and most stable results. But do you actually need image stabilization? And can you tell the difference?
I’ll talk about the different reasons why your footage and images may not be as sharp as you want them to be. We’ll talk about the different types of image stabilization and finally what image stabilization can and can’t do.
Finally, I’d love to know what you think. What kind of stabilization do you use (or want to use) and how it’s working out for you.

Are you feeling stable? I hope this first image stabilization video helped answer some questions. Did you like it? Are you still confused? Let me know how I could help. Finally, I’d love to know what you think. What kind of stabilization do you use (or want to use) and how it’s working out for you.
I am grateful in advance 🙏
Awesome! Super glad!!
Omg you are just teasing a lumix review, are you stalling because the lumix stabilization amazed you too much 😂
I own a lumix g9 for the record 😎
That G9 is really nice! The GH5 is coming, I promise!
Ever since I bought a camera with IBIS, I want this system in my cameras. Remember - it's optional too. I can switch it off completely, if I want to. But going in the streets after sunset with my camera, shooting at 1/2 second shutter and getting like 80% of shots perfectly sharp - once you realize this thing EXIST, it's not easy to give it up. And what I love about it, that my small, prime lenses get the benefit too. When you combine f/1.8 or faster with 1/2 seconds or even slower, trust me, I shoot in pitch dark and still get amazing results.
Definitely very valuable perspective - I completely understand! You have a specific use case where IBIS actually offers an incredible value.
I wish we could like more than once! Loved this video. Super informative, technical (well, tech gear talk, what do you expect? - me talking to myself lol), and you throw a few super duper tips, like the one about photography... the rule of thumbs.... in my humble opinion I think IBIS would be better, cause yes! Stabilized lenses are EXPENSIVE. I think it also depends on what do we want to express in a particular situation. The important thing is to watch your videos and get as much info as we can and try and experiment, and see the results, but it’s important to know, or at least to have an idea of what will happen when we do this or that. Thanks so much for sharing, man 🙏👊🙏
That's super good perspective Ruben. I COMPLETELY agree with testing everything out, trying it for yourself and seeing what works. As you mentioned, I just share the info and my experience.
I need questions answered, and here is your video from a year ago solving it again :)
Great stuff, Thank you man, I think if I keep watching you (I will), I will be a professional photographer even before I get my camera. Actually when I found your video the first time I was planning on buying the sl2, but then my wife gave birth and I spent all the money on the baby 😂
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW BABY!!! Good job with your priorities. I'm glad the videos are being helpful and I'm glad you're part of the community! All in due time 👊
Great video!
IBIS is a great feature to have, but you didn't put any 'hype' into your explanation and gave actual use cases. Awesome.
Appreciate you Shane 🙏
Thanks so much this was very clear and informative much love
Informative video and beautiful photos. I like the way you recap the photos and videos at the end.
Super glad you liked it and thank you for the kind words!
Great video, explained everything very clearly! Would love to see more education tech talk like this!
I'm mostly familiar with Nikon's VR and Sigma's OS. I can't tell much of a difference because in a lot of cases where I've needed to shoot slower than 1/80(my personal preference to eliminate any possible hand shake on optimal shots) I'll normally just use my tripod or its detachable monopod to help stabilize the camera. Steeletraining had a cool video where he shows you how to use your strap as a stabilizer, so in a pinch I'll sometimes brace my camera with the strap off my neck or knee. The only time I've really noticed it was when I was hiking to get some waterfall photos and with my Sigma 17-50 2.8 with OS, I was able to handheld shoot at almost 1 second to get a nice smooth waterfall image, so I know it worked when I needed it to! With Nikon's VR I'm not so sure, I have the AF-P 70-300mm non VR and AF-S 55-300 with VR and I honestly can't tell the difference when I'm out shooting birds or the moon with it.
That's good feedback - I have a lot more educational stuff coming! Whoa... 1 second handheld is skill! Interesting that you can't tell the difference with the longer zoom. You could try to set it to 300, handhold it for video for 10 seconds trying to keep it still. Then do the same with the other lens and compare
One more thing. Since you do gaming videos, would love some feedback on: ua-cam.com/video/Z7dWlRKMbw0/v-deo.html 🙏 Thanks in advance
@@TechGearTalk Was actually about to check that video out. I have a good bit of Corsair stuff, but Logitech has been my go-to for mice. My G403 has lasted a long time and haven't had to get a new one yet, but will give that video a watch for sure!
Thank you in advance!

Great & knowledgeable video, this channel deserves at least a million subscribers. I came across your video, searching a mirrorless camera with stabilization as good as my Go pro Hero8, but after seeing quite a few vlogs on cameras, I don't think there is one under $1k. I have shooting all my channel's videos on Go Pro and Mavic Air and the stabilization and 4k quality is tops but this summer i wanted to shoot some night skies time lapse footage hence, started to look for a mirrorless camera. I'm still not sure if I should invest in these cameras just to catch some night time stuff if I can not us it for my entire travel (talking to the lens while walking or climbing). Any advise you can give?
Love your content keep it up.
Thank you so much - I will do!
Excellent video! Thank you.
You’re very welcome Nolan. Appreciate you being part of the community.
This was a great video. I have a question related to cross brand lenses working with Panasonic. It's my understanding that the Olympus 45mm 1.8 does not work well with the Panasonic in body stabilization for video. Have you had this same experience? Obviously this is not the case for the Panasonic stabilized 42.5mm lens but I'm wondering about the experience with the Olympus lens. Thank you.
One of the best youtubers !
This was very informative, thank you👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thx a lot, you the best!!!
Appreciate it - and to you as well 🙏
that answered all my questions. thanks
Glad to help! Thanks for being part of the channel.
You propose an interesting question of what stabilization methods were used in some sample footage. It would be nice to see the answers at the end to see if we were right or not. For me, debating on getting a more advanced expensive camera with image stabilization or buy a decent, more entry level camera and buy a gimbal. Convenience may go to the more expensive camera option but the hassle of a gimbal may still produce a more steady image than a camera with image stabilization, am I right?
Great info, I need IS personally. I don't like using tripods for non macro shots.
Thanks Ran - appreciate the feedback!
In film camera days there was nothing like stabilization on cameras.we did get sharp photos with 35mm film cameras and very good sports photos.
very true
You will be surprised which Canon camera had IBIS first...
Hey, I love your videos!
Hey, thanks!
Did you ever do the videos you referenced you were working on? I can't find them, thanks!
This was very helpful for me. I have a Canon r5 ,and I want to buy an older 300 mm 2.8 L, but it doesn't have IS . I want to use this 300 mm lens to photograph aircraft and race cars
If I understood you correctly with a fast enough shutter speed, I should be fine. Thank you, as this was a real problem for me.
When shooting video does the lens stabilization "stack" on top of the IBIS? Will spending the extra money for a prime with stabilization help me shoot steadier footage in low light like inside a motorcycle garage etcetera?
Say a Sony A7iii with a 35mm 1.8 with stabilization or a similar lens that doesn't have the stabilization. Is the extra stabilization worth the money if I already have IBIS?
Just subscribed. Great videos BTW!
Hi, Tech Gear Talk! A a great, and very informative talk on the different types of camera stabilization, sadly due to the fact I am getting older now, I have developed slightly shaky hands? or excuse the pun, a slightly in-body tremor!?!? whatever it is I am getting far too many blurry handheld images these days! So the realization is I will have to return to a camera with IBIS! I don't shoot video, just stills, so in that case would you agree that I need a camera with IBIS and not with IBDS? Thank you for your reply.
I need to watch this couple of times.
Hope it’s helpful!
Thanks for the good video. Do I need to turn off the stabilizer when shooting at high shutter speeds such as a 2000th.
Glad it was helpful. I don't turn it off unless I'm on a tripod
How much of an improvement If you use all three simultaneously?
Great. Thank you very much.
Have you done a video about the same for non video?
Thanks! This video addresses both photography and video uses. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Hi ... I bought the R6 with IBIS and I want a 24-70mm but Canon does not offer lense stabization. Do I really need it if I have IBIS? I am considering the Tamron version g2 as well but there is a price difference if I am considering the L lense. Thanks!
Good explanstion. Is it sufficient for photography to either have IBIS or i n lens stabilisatio or is having both better? Thanks
I subbed because you literally taught me something hahah
Thanks for the great video. Would you rather have the Canon 35mm f/2 with image stabilization or the Sigma f/1.4 with no object stabilization?
Hi. I’m not familiar with a 35mm f/2 with stabilization. Also, what would be the use main use for the lens.
@@TechGearTalk Portraits and street photography.
Do you need it? Only for certain types of shooting and certain situations I'd say. Lower light and/or long lenses. I think when it comes to long lenses at slow(er) shutter speeds you can tell the differneces, but for those who are shooting in bright light where you can observe the minimum shutter speed rule for example, then you don't. But it's also one of those things that I personally would like to have available, even if I don't always use it -- it's there if I need it. For example, in good light, I may be shooting travel photography at shutter speed likes 1/100s or faster that can be done handheld and where IS (in body or in-lens) may not be of any real benefit or make a difference. So if anything you have to look at what types of shooting you do and the conditions. If you mostly shoot landscapes on a tripod, then you can probably get away without IS. But if you're a sports shooter or you shoot concerts or other low-light/long lens applications, then you may want to consider getting a camera/lens with stabilization.
Hi. I a beginner about lenses and I am searching for wide angle lens. I'm torn (kind of) between the canon 10-18 mm lens with image stabilization but with f/4.5 and 10-22 mm lens but without image stabilization with f/3.5. I dont know if you are familiar with the two lenses but in your opinion, which lens should be better? Thank youuu
Crazy question from a hobbyist on budget! How is the IBIS on Canon R7 compares with digital IS in R8...
Nice video, I'd like to ask if it is ok to use both image stabilization at the same time, I mean the camera stabilization system and the lens stabilization. Is it better to use them both for better results ? Or one of them is enough ?
Thank you 🙏🏻 Use both when available for the best results in most cases 👍🏻
So true. Gimbal is the way to go for video.
Agreed!
Earlier I used to take bad af photos because of no focus or shaky hand while clicking
Image stabilization is really helpful for me
Anyways nice video

Loved the video! Quick question that I missed from the video.
When shooting video, does it help to have lens stabilization on top of IBIS? Not sure if they work better together or if lens stabilization is completely irrelevant.
Thanks!
Thank you for them in’s words. Yes, it helps to have lens stabilization when possible. Using a gimbal is still the best option though. Hope that helps.
Awesome thank you for replying@@TechGearTalk !
Sounds like I will need a gimbal regardless.
07:22 i'm waiting for the card ... hehe :)
Hi, I´m a fingerprint specialist who works for a government agency. I've got a Canon Macro Lens without IS. I usually take pictures of fingerprints on objects, so it is necessary using a tripod. Can you tell me if using a Canon IS lens (more expensive), I will note the difference taking pictures just holding the camera on hands ?
Hi, can lens stabilisation, camera sensor and digital stabilisation be too much stabilisation, essentially stabilisers fighting against each other and cause images to not be sharp?
Today I went out in sunny summer weather to test the animal auto focus etc in my new Canon R6. I used my Canon EF 70-200 f2.8L IS III (which is less than a year old and I know to be razor sharp). All stabilisation setting turned on (sensor, digital and lens) and my experience shooting was great with animal eye auto focus locking on perfectly, however, now I’m home and looking at the images on my laptop screen, they don’t look as sharp as I expected, or as sharp as I would expect my old Canon 77D cropped sensor to be. Is there such a thing as too much stabilisation? What are your thoughts?
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Hello im planning to buy a camera for photography and little video, sony a6400 is what i plan but it doesn't have ibis is there any recommendations should i get ?
With my GH5, I can shoot 4K video handheld with remarkably good results. But that's unusual. My Nikon Z6 also has 5-point stabilization but it doesn't work as well as the Panasonic GH5.
Helpful tips 👍👍☺️

Hello, I loved the video. I want to learn about videography, what type of camera would you recommend. my budget is around $500
If you are new into video, perhaps Canon M50 is a good start! And recently they just came out with M50 ii.

I wish a video to see direct comparation between stabilizator and none, but not video, i am curious about photography
Basically IBIS, OSS helps w the jitters and buys you a few stops, otherwise you need faster shutter, aperture or ISO. I’m debating upgrading to a6500,6600 or the a7iii for a (crappy) IBIS system.
What are you shooting with now?
Tech Gear Talk I have an old NEX6 that I’ve been using for years. I recently bought a replacement control wheel and installed it back like new and bought a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for family portraits and general fun. I have a few other apsc lenses. I like apsc for portability and such but might buy an a7iii after the a7iv is announced, for family portraits and local photos, keep the NEX6 for travel.
The only issue with the a7iii is the price of the lenses. There are some third party options
Tech Gear Talk yeah I only shoot occasionally. Most photos are with my phone but I want some better photos for the growing family. If I buy a FF I’ll probably only buy a Sigma/Tamron zoom in the 24-70 range for general photos and a prime 50-85 for portraits.
Those are awesome lenses 👍🏻
I am buying my first ever camera for videography and I dont know if i should prior a good auto focus or image stabilization. What do you recomend?
For me, autofocus. If it’s not in focus - nothing else matters.
@@TechGearTalk Thank you. That's my opinion too. I can always buy a gimbal but i can't buy autofocus

Hey, I need some help. I have a canon 5d mark 4 and I was going to save up for this lens "canon ef 24-70mm f/2.8l ii usm standard zoom lens" but I heard that it doesn't have image stabilization also it's really expensive would there be something that's cheaper but does something similar.
I'm also starting to take photos of events and I just want a lens that's good and versatile
So if I am using a 85mm what shutter speed
SO this doesn;t do the same job as those gimbal rigs people mount their video cameras to?
Not to that extent, but on a much smaller scale
I am thinking about the sony a6400 and i might film a vlog or two within maybe a year (for my graduation). May I know if it would be fine? (cuz it doesn't have a stablizor). Also, what are some free ways that I can make the image more stable (like editing that I can use)? Thank you
Why not save your money and just vlog on your phone? It's going to probably me more stable, and you can get a gimbal for your phone very inexpensively which would definitely make it more stable. Hope that helps. Thanks for being part of the channel!
@@TechGearTalk I forgot to mention that I want the camera for mostly photos and a teeny bit of vlog. Photography is my main concern just that I hope it could also be a vlog camera if I need it to XD Do you think the a6700 is better or the a6100 is better? Thank you~
i have always done photography at school with dslr (canon 700d and 6d) and I am looking for a mirrorless that provide the quality of around 700d. thanks so much!
also all of those cameras belongs to the schoolXD
@@nowiknow1766 Hey man I am also thinking of buying the a6100, (mostly for video purposes) is it a good idea ??
@@user-qj4zr1pj9y I have friends that's got the a6000 and they should be similar and weighwise it's good but image stabilization wise I think not really. Hope that helps!
@@nowiknow1766 Thank you.

Is gimbal as good as in-body sensor shift?
A gimbal is significantly better than in-body sensor shift. Hope that helps.
@@TechGearTalk Not that I’m looking to extract stills from a gimbal video but all video settings being optimal would your explanation still be true?
07:21 -> Many of the links you mention, are never linked OR mentioned in the Description box at all ! I've noticed this in atleast 3 such videos. Could you rectify this ??
Thanks for the heads up. I am still putting that video together. Do you know what the other ones were? (If you ever see that, please put a comment and I'll make sure I circle back). Appreciate it!
@@TechGearTalk I'm also waiting to watch those videos you mentioned you are working on to make up my mind regarding stabilization. I love your videos! You explain things so well!
warp stabilizer is an adobe software, correct?
Yes. Other software systems have their own stabilizing as well.
Ibis in that LUMIX a killer from what I saw on videos still saving to get it
Yup, the GH5 has amazing IBIS. I would still use a gimbal instead and I value autofocus over IBIS (for what I do). Let me know when you get it!
Some kind of stabilisation is neccesary for video making.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. Stabilization is useful for video IF there is camera movement. I believe I mention this in the video - if I ever move the camera, it's on a slider or a gimbal. No image stabilization in a mirrorless, dslr or a lens is going to do as good a job as a gimbal (at least not yet). Hope that helps clear my position.
@@TechGearTalk would u recommend buying a gimbal if my main segment is food-vlogging where I use a lot of slow motion etc.? I mostly move camera towards the end result (ready meal) or in the process of cooking, however close to the subject... considering buying Canon SL2 now, to finally replace the iPhone, for better video quality. But the image stabilization is my concern still...
