I found one of these once on a small road during a rainstorm. Poor thing's shell had already been cracked by a car running it over. I actually took it home and was able to nurse it back to health. It loved eating goldfish, which I had for another pet. Then released it in a lake that I knew to be full of its fellow snappers. It was actually quite friendly. Turtle-popping is also a really bad idea because of the risk of damage to your vehicle. They're like a 6" high speed-bump. It can crack a car's front facia or rocker panel, not to mention the impact on your car's front suspension.
I used to see gigantic snapping turtles where I grew up, but I haven't seen them as much lately. I always moved them out of the road by lifting the middle of the shell where neither set of legs can reach you.
I read that common snapping turtles can live to be over 200 yrs old. They return to the exact same nesting site every time they lay eggs, so new construction projects in or near wetlands and rivers interrupt their ability to return to their nesting site.
I picked one out of the road a few years ago... I knew about not getting too close to the front, but had no idea about the peeing... anyway, I got him out of the road and I got wet.
Titanic is an exceptionally chill snapping turtle. I've rescued many from the middle of the road, and not one has ever shown anything but ire, let alone gratitude 🤣I'll never stop doing it though.
At 4:54 that just hurt me bad. So many people just dunk on reptiles, it's apparently ok to hurt them or kill them because they're just dumb, unlike animals with fur- APPARENTLY. We have turtles and a tortoise as well as other reptiles and we love all of them. People react negatively even to a leopard gecko- you know the lizard with a built in smile. Incredibly frustrating.
I think there is nothing cooler than being a lone snapping turtle. Except at snapping turtle picnics, when you don’t have a partner for the snappy wheel barrow race.
The fact that people can be so cruel as to voluntary hit animals will always make my stomach stick. Even with Cane toads here in Australia where they're a massive pest that should be killed I still hate the idea of me having to kill them, let alone hitting them with a golf club or freezing them to death like a lot of people do here.
Thank you. I do encounter these where I live and see them on the road sometimes, particularly if there's been some flooding. I did move one across the road once but it was pretty young and only about the size of a box turtle.
Snapping Turtle while being wheelbarrowed: I don't know what you're doing hooman, but I don't care. Just remember to don't get past the touchy zone or I'll bi- oh.. gotta pee.
That's the common snapping turtle. The alligator snapper, meaner looking, can be picked up by his/her shell along the side, he/she can't reach you to snap.
My family saw a sanpping turtle walking across a busy road one time. We decided to help it cross, we didn't use the wheelbarrow method, but we used a blanket and slide it across the road.
This is something I will never understand, Why people run over any animal. All animals give us such joy and up lifting of our spirit. I wish we could return the EVIL these people inflict on these creatures. It only takes a second to slow down and protect these critters.
When I was a child my mother took my sister and I to the beach, on the way home we saw a sea turtle that had somehow made its way from the beach onto the nearby highway. My mother stopped our mini-van and got out to save it. My sister and I watched (probably with ice cream or some other snack) as my mother went to grab the turtle and save it, but instead a semi truck swerved to run it over and splattered the sea turtle all over the road. That turned out to not be a fun day, people are monsters.
That's sad....and a sea turtle at that...Its cruel that people would run over beautiful creatures and think of it as a game....im sorry you had to witness that tho..
I once saw a garbage can lid being moved by the wind, close by a pond. Whoopsie no! It was an enormous snapper, close to two feet diameter! Northeast Pennsylvania
I found one in the road about the size of a dinner platter- I moved him to one side of the road, then as cars went by I realized his habitat was on the other side of the street, so I waited and we crossed again 😂🤦🏼♀️ thankfully I knew to hold him near the back! He didn’t pee or hiss or snap, though, so I’m hopeful he understood I was helping him find his way! Once he was on the correct side of the road, he was past the barrier and back under the water before I’d reached my car!
I pulled over on a road in a group of bikers and we stopped traffic and helped turtles get across. I was amazed how the goof car drivers were so angry, having to stop for a few minutes. We explained that these turtle's lives were more important than whatever nonsense they were rushing to on a Sunday afternoon.
I'm 68 and all my life I risked my life to save any turtle I find on the road in June in Massachusetts when they lay eggs. I have saved some HUGE ones too. Some I couldn't lift. I grew up loving turtles. So thanks for your help. I know they...The Turtles appreciate it! Das 😎 all!
I got 'snapped' by a small one once, when I was about 10 years old. Fortunately there was a bone in my fingertip that stopped it. I actually had to shake it off my finger. My finger throbbed for the rest of the day. I don't hold a grudge against them tho.
Wish I'd watched this before my family and I found an alligator snapping turtle crossing a road in the boonies of North Carolina! We ended up just gently "kicking" it forward until it was out of danger. It did not appreciate that, obviously, and dang near got a chomp on my dad. But I just could NOT remember how to safely handle them, and we couldn't wait around. (plus no cell service to look it up!) At least we got it across safely, despite making it very angry in the process. Now I know for next time!
We live between 2 ponds and see snapping turtles about that size and painted turtles come down the road. We've watched them lay eggs. Usually we see the nests dug up a few months later by a coyote or some other hungry critter. I hope some nests make it.
As someone who genuinely loves reptiles, it makes me thoroughly upset to hear people going out of their way to be cruel to animals. Especially animals too slow to get out of harm's way. I'm gonna go watch some more reptile videos to cheer myself up.
It is sociopathic to think that the appropriate to attempt to hit a turtle with your car instead of trying to go around it. Snapping turtles are like any other wild animal - they generally just attack when you mess with them. And these people that think you should do this are prioritizing their own comfort and convenience over the lives of innocent animals, and even the health of the surrounding ecosystem. Just because they don't want to learn how to touch a snapping turtle and move them off a road without getting bitten.
I noticed your omnipod for the first time in this video. It makes me so happy that we are seeing more diabetic devices worn openly in various media. Growing up, there was zero representation. As a fellow pumper, thank you.
I found a tiny painted turtle in back of my house last year. Have no idea, there is no water very close. I took him out a couple miles into the country where I knew there was a clear running creek and he took to it like a turtle takes to water.
Just over a dozen types of turtle (based on time of year) live in my general area but each and EVERYONE one of them are classified as Threatened/Endangered.
Hi Danielle, turtles are one of my favorite animals, they look ancient and mysterious, like they don't belong in the modern real world, more like fantasy creatures. The snapping turtle is not on my top 5, or top 10 even, but it's still a beautiful turtle, just a little too aggressive for my taste.
I saved a 50+ pounder last year that was walking across the road. I was surprised at how flexible they are and how long the neck can get. Where i grabbed was safe from the face luckily but his hind claws nicked me a couple times and i still have the scars but it was worth it

Ok, a car is rushing towards you, and you are going to walk a tortoise like a wheelbarrow?
why would someone find joy in running a turtle over? they are generally pretty chill if you aren't bothering them.
Very rare to see a snapping turtle that doesn't look angry. Titanic looks like he's just chilling, until he "activates his first line of defense."
I have a soft spot for turtles when I see them on or near the road. I've pulled over many a time to carry a turtle across the road.
I helped a couple of Australian eastern snake necked turtles cross the road one summer and they peed all over me!
Yesssss! Exactly what we needed! ❤
I was really confused at the start 0:10 - looked like the host was all excited while their coworker was armed with a massive hunting rifle lol
Titanic is an exceptionally chill snapping turtle. I've rescued many from the middle of the road, and not one has ever shown anything but ire, let alone gratitude 🤣I'll never stop doing it though.
I pulled a small snapping turtle out of the middle of the road once.
I'm still waiting for one of them to return the favor.
Snappers are awesome creatures, there is nothing like fishing a creek and having a snapping turtle swim up to check things out.
I think there is nothing cooler than being a lone snapping turtle. Except at snapping turtle picnics, when you don’t have a partner for the snappy wheel barrow race.
So cool to see a full video on these snappy bois after watching the shorts for weeks. Thanks Animalogic!
The fact that people can be so cruel as to voluntary hit animals will always make my stomach stick. Even with Cane toads here in Australia where they're a massive pest that should be killed I still hate the idea of me having to kill them, let alone hitting them with a golf club or freezing them to death like a lot of people do here.
the turtle is my famly's guardian animals, I spent my whole life around them, love them, all of them
It looks more badass and spiky lol
Thanks for highlighting one of my favorite critters! You guys are awesome!
the host is cute in a nerdy way. great to see🥰
We really need to analyze the psychology of people who engage in and brag about "turtle popping." It's no doubt a red flag for a lot of other things.
Up here in New England we have some really old turtles, some have been found with civil war Era musket balls within.
Someone needs to try attaching spikes to the top of their shells

That sounds horrifically traumatic :(
I once saw a garbage can lid being moved by the wind, close by a pond.
It is nice how you look so much happier in the wild. You should make more videos out of the studio
I have caught one these before, and so far, nothing else that I've caught has beat it in coolness
amazing but somber video ! thank you for sharing this story even if certain aspects were horrifying to engage with
I get so sad when I see evidence that people intentionally hit wild animals trying to cross the road. It’s such a spiteful cruel thing to do.
My heart broke when I read those comments. We as humans have failed the Mother Earth. 😞
Das 😎 all!
Peeing is my 3 year old's defense mechanism too.
"This Is What To Do If You Run Into A Snapping Turtle"
Blow them a kiss. :)
Great channel!
If they could breathe fire ... we'd all believe in dragons alot more
Walk them like a wheelbarrow. In his head he's saying, "JUST PICK ME UP ALREADY"!!!
You forgot the scrub brush for the shell.Never visit a turtle without one... at least from what I've seen, they love it.
I love this channel and Danielle Dufault. Thank you guys for making this environmentally friend, encouraging video.
Where i grabbed was safe from the face luckily but his hind claws nicked me a couple times and i still have the scars but it was worth it
The only sort of person who would purposely kill an animal on the roadside is a sociopath. If you do this, you should probably seek help.
ah yes grab turtle by the love handles and wheelbarrow them to safety, perfect
Stop describing my Saturday night bedroom romps.
WOW, who would have thought, even for a nano second. That an animal with nothing but four legs and a mouth to defend them selves, would use their mouth to bite. Reckon even at my age of 74, one can learn somthing new. Thank You, You Tube, for this wonderful insight as to how an animal protects itself. Content provider's NEVER stop to amaze me with their various and educational content.
I think you should watch the video again, since you missed the part where they explained that they can’t retract into their shells like other turtle species 😂
hey the thumbnail literally answered the question, not their fault you clicked the video afterwards. funny comment tho
I use to have a pet Musk turtle. They are kind of like miniature snapping turtles. Watching this made me miss my boy. 🍺
I think every reason this creature snaps your fingers of is surprising
Bellas las tortugas.
Que buen documental
Gracias Animalogic.
I have watched otters eat a snapping turtle twice. Once with its head inside the carapice, seemingly stuck, banging it on the ice.
This is the opposite of how I pick up my snapping cat
Running over turtles is frikin psychopathic behaviour, I know some people eat them but nobody is going to eat roadkill. It’s violence for the sake of violence
People do actually eat roadkill, like in Louisiana and Appalachia. But other than that I agree only ignorant morons would purposely be cruel.
