  • Being a plant parent comes with its joys and responsibilities, but what happens when you're struck down by illness and can't tend to your beloved houseplant collection as usual?
That's the situation I found myself in after returning from a trip to Mexico recently. I was sick for 8 days, deprived of any energy to care for my plants.
Don't worry, though... there are steps you can take to ensure your green friends survive and thrive even when you're under the weather.
Prioritize Your Plants: When you're feeling unwell, it's essential to prioritize your plant care efforts. Identify which plants require immediate attention, such as those sensitive to changes in moisture or light levels. Focus on caring for these first to ensure their well-being.
Seek Assistance: Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family members, or neighbors for help. Enlist their support in watering and checking on your plants regularly. Provide clear instructions on care routines and any specific needs of individual plants to ensure they receive proper attention.
Group Plants with Similar Needs: Streamline care by grouping plants with similar care requirements together. This makes it easier for caregivers to manage them efficiently and ensures that each plant receives the appropriate level of attention.
Monitor Soil Moisture: Check the soil moisture of each plant before watering, and only water if the soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can be just as harmful as under-watering, so it's essential to strike the right balance, especially when you're unable to tend to your plants regularly.
Increase Humidity: If your plants require higher humidity levels, consider using humidity trays or grouping plants together to create a microclimate with increased moisture. This can help prevent dehydration and maintain optimal growing conditions for your plants.
Adjust Lighting: Move plants away from direct sunlight if they're positioned near drafty windows or sensitive to intense light. Adjusting the lighting conditions can help prevent stress and ensure that your plants continue to thrive in your absence.
Minimize Stress: Avoid moving plants or repotting them while you're unwell, as this can add unnecessary stress. Instead, focus on providing a stable environment for your plants to minimize any additional strain on them.
Utilize Self-Watering Devices: Consider investing in self-watering stakes or globes to help regulate soil moisture levels over an extended period. These devices can provide a reliable source of hydration for your plants while you focus on recovering.
Delegate Pruning Tasks: Remove any dead or decaying foliage to promote healthy growth and prevent the spread of disease. Delegate pruning tasks to caregivers or attend to them yourself when you feel up to it, but avoid unnecessary pruning during your recovery period.
Plan for Recovery: Once you're feeling better, gradually resume your regular care routine. Monitor your plants closely for any signs of stress or damage that occurred during your absence and adjust care as needed to help them recover.

I hope you're feeling better. I love the humidity tip! I love them all but I'd been wondering about increasing the humidity to help plants when I'm unable. Consistency is so often stressed with humidity and temperature but if increasing the humidity just a bit can give my plants a tad less stress... Woot! Not something to be used on a regular basis, but when there's need.
I can't get over how cheery you are even when you're not feeling well. Thank you for taking care of us while you're busy recovering! We could've waited, but I want you to know you're appreciated. 💚

Sorry to hear you are feeling poorly after being away on holiday. I am reluctant to travel for that very reason. I had ongoing health issues a couple years ago and all but one of my plants bit the dust. I felt so bad for so long that I just didn't care. Had to start all over again collecting.

thank you for providing some important information even while under the weather. i can see it becoming stressful quickly with the massive collection you have. but i think they kinda slow down too when you’re away or unable to care for them they are patient 🪴🎍
