Gear review backpack Osprey aether AG 70. After one season with my Osprey aether 70 AG I decide to not keep this trekking backpack. Lots of friends are satisfied and happy with their Osprey backpacks but it didn’t fit me.
This Osprey hiking backpack has a lot of different features that I like. It’s easy to find space for all different gear and its easy access in to the pag with several pockets and entries. It’s not an ultra-light backpack but the weight of 2,3 kg is okay if the bag had been good. The price of the Osprey pack is also okey if you ask me.
The bad thing with this osprey backpack is simply the carry system and the frame. The frame in the Osprey aether 70 AG is too weak for heavy loads and I expect more from a bag with this weight. The way of measuring the body that Osprey packs have seems to totally forget that people have different widths of their hips. I’m a small guy (172 cm/67 kg) and got recommendations to buy a medium sized Osprey backpack. It fit my length which is also adjustable in a very good way but it doesn’t fit my hips at all. The hip belt is too short to give me a good support when I carry most of the weight on my hips. I really miss the possibilities to adjust or choose different width of the hip belt.
The last thing is the padding of the hip belt. It should shape after your body when you have been using this. In my case that never happened. The aether 70 also makes it feel like I have something pushing in to the left backside of my hip. My friends who just tested the backpack in my kitchen also felt the same so maybe there is something wrong with this Osprey backpack.
Anyway, I liked the storage part of the pack and I think that a backpack with this weight should be little bit more prepared to take heavy loads over 15-20 kg or more.

I have the 60 version. I bought the medium size and the seller switched the waist band and the shoulder straps for large one. It's possible to do that when you buy that in a good store. And the osprey warranty is very very impressive. I broke a clip and they gave me a brand new backpack.
I am glad that you mentioned the hip belt doesn’t really wrap around your waist because I have the same issue with my Atmos AG and I am getting rid of it just after one trial!

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA mine is an even older version than yours. It is copper colour and lacks many of the small features like the hip pockets.
I have been using different types of Deuter for over 15 years and I can highly recommend them, never had a problem. Currently I have been using most the one to carry my child (12kg) and it is perfectly balanced on my back, also strong construction.
Thank you for this! Have been considering this backpack as my next one. The current one I have is a HMG 4400 Porter, which is working really great but it HAS a weak frame. >15 kg and it's extremely uncomfortable to carry. Below that is ok though.
You should check Seek Outside... They have really good backpacks with super frames.

Very good review, one of the best I have seen. Would you mind sharing what backpack you like the most? I am mostly interested in the hip belts as you mentioned. It's also a plus if I can fit my large smartphone in those hip pockets, and drinking system in the backpack. What do you recommend? I am tall, 190cm, need xl.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA I love the Seek Outside packs... My Osprey does squeak which kind of bothers me, and the hip belt took a minute to break in, but now that pack makes 40lbs feel like 25. I have been looking at the Zpacks Arc Zip 57L but I know from experience with ultralight gear that anything over 25 - 30lbs, and suddenly that flimsy pack's failure rate starts to skyrocket with each additional pound. It looks like Zpacks modeled its strap / frame configuration after the Master of backpacks, Dan McHale himself.
Seems to have fixed a lot of this for the Aether PLUS version of the pack, which has ditched the AG carry system for a much more rigid one. Just tried it for a 8 day Sarek hike and the Airscape carry system feels much more stable than AG, no wobbles no nothing on heavier loads. Also both hip belt and shoulder strap cushioned part extends to adjust for different hip and shoulder size. The rain cover is still waay too small with the PLUS version too, had to get a larger one separately. But I recommend checking out the Plus version, not the AG one if you consider Aether.
I maybe should send this video to Osprey and ask what's wrong with my backpack? 😀

I recently retired the same pack since the main compartment wasn’t large enough for my large bear vault. Living in grizzly county this is important since above tree line, there are no places to hang food (no trees tall enough). The main compartment was pretty small compared to other packs. I ended up buying the Aether plus 100 for the extra space. The extra space is also very important to consider if you use it in the winter or cooler months when you need to carry extra gear. Since the pack can be cinched up to a smaller size, I’m surprised more people don’t choose the larger capacity version or maybe they don’t know it exists. The pack is similar in weight to the 70. That’s a very good point about the frame being too flexible. That’s not something I considered since I’ve never had issue with that with other packs. I may have to keep weight lower than I’m used to because of this. The size chart indicated I could either use the M/L or the L because I’m in the middle. I’m glad I chose the larger size in order to get a fuller wrap around my hips. Yes, it has features I won’t likely use often, but nice to have the options at a cost of just a little extra weight. Mine also (and the 70) has a functional removable daypack you didn’t mention. This may only be a feature of the “Plus” version of the model - the main reason I chose the pack. I’m hoping the pack suits me better than it did you. After watching your video, my main concern now is the flimsy frame. I’ll find out soon enough when I carry a full load. Thanks for the review!

Nice review. I do own the same backpack as you, but dont have the same problem with the hip belt. Im overweight. But i do have severe issues wirh getting sparepart if something breaks. Since 15th of april I've tried to get a small part to attach the lid to the pack. It broke on day 57 of a 102 day expedition. I'm getting rid of all my 3 osprey packs as siin as i get the spare part
That's bad... Maybe it's different service level in different countries/regions? In Sweden I have heard the opposite than you. People are really happy with service when something breaks down.

When I bought this the only thing you measured was the length of your back. If I take a bigger size it will be to long.

I had the same problems with the Aether, being also same height and weight. Since I already have a lightweight backpack I wanted to use the Aether for 18kg or more but it just doesn't work very well so I returned it. The Seek Outside Packframe in your other video looks very promising but I am just not sure about the durability of the fabric. It looks to be something other than normal backpack nylon. If you can make a review I would be very grateful. I'm also looking at the Kelty Tioga, a very cool backpack, haha.

Hej Matti! Tack för ännu en bra och informativ vid video, uppskattar alltid att höra dina tankar och tips i dina videos.👍 Jag köpte nyligen en Osprey Aether Plus 70. Vad jag kan se så här den ett annat bärsystem och ram än AG-varianten och även justerbar längd på höftbältet. Utifrån dina tankar om AG-ryggsäcken tror jag att du skulle gilla Plus-varianten (tror att den är nyare, kanske tom en ersättare till AG). Jag provade flera Fjällräven innan jag till mitt stora förtret tillslut landade i Osprey-säcken (jag ville hellre ha Fjällräven Kajka eller Keb eftersom jag gillar att de är så mycket renare utan alla spännen, band, blixtlås mm) eftersom den satt överlägset skönast på mig. När jag nu haft den och provat den någon tur så älskar jag den! Precis som du beskriver har den många smarta lösningar och fickor. Älskar att man enkelt kommer åt flaskan från sidofickan utan att behöva ta av sig säcken. Tror som sagt att du skulle gilla den så ta en titt på den. 👍

Det låter ju väldigt bra ifall Osprey har löst problemet! Och väldigt bra att du har hittat en säck som du trivs med. Det gör verkligen livet på tur så.mycket trevligare.
Så som denna, min Osprey, är uppbyggd med avbärarbältet är den verkligen oanvändbar för mig.
Måste ta och skriva ett mail till Osprey för då kanske det går att göra en uppföljare.

Yeah I sold mine a while back after experiencing similar problems with it, I found it was a little uncomfortable and it squeaked a lot which started to get a little irritating, I almost oiled it.
I have an Aether PRO. A completely different ball game.
More rigid, bigger belt (but you can choose a different size of belt from the pack), no useless pockets/zips, simple and sturdy.
Among my packs (North Face Prophet 100, Savotta Jaakari L, Osprey Xenith 105) by far the best. As for the load, any pack with more than 20 kg is uncomfortable, whatever reviews say. I hike for 7/10 days in the autumn in Lapland and I carry max 15kg. If it’s colder and snowy, then I use a pulk.
I agree that all loaded over 20kg is usually not a pleasant experience BUT my Seek Outside is different. It's actually better when the frame is outside the backpack.
I haven't seen the Aether PRO but it would be interesting to try one of the.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA I agree with you. I am interested in a external frame as well: been looking at the Hill People Gear QI-YA. Now this Seek Outside could be a valid alternative. The problem is the shipping from USA. I think the internal frame big packs are for good hi volumes, not Hi Weights.
I have one of the old models (appr 2003) and the frame is the same bending inward but not so much outward. It is also more rigid when on my bag but still give some liberty of freedom to rotate my body when looking sideways? As for the belt, perhaps a large would have been better. My jeans are width 30 and both sides of the belt are around 10cm apart. Besides from these point, if the bag irritates you, it will never satisfy you in the future and you should get rid of it.

I think we are all pretty particular about our packs. I have been an Osprey loyalist for a long time now, but the critique is fair. I sent my first Aether 70 back for the same reason, but took the risk and got another one about a year later. I had the same problem until I just meticulously adjusted everything to my body, and now it's pretty good, not as good as my others but close. I don't care for the stiffness in certain reinforcements.
Yes... I totally understand that lots of people, including Stina, love their Osprey backpacks. I'm little bit interested in testing one more.of their models.

I must say, that all my Osprey packs are older, and mostly, I prefer the older designs. My favorite for most things is the Kestrel 48, and it is nothing like the current design for that model. I still carry a Flux (25L) from about ten years ago, as an urban day bag. I have no idea why they chose to discontinue the model.
What would be your favorite backpack then (for heavy load )? This might be interesting to me because I do carry a lot also (28-35kg)

I have tried Osprey, but never so small as 70 liter, I need at least 90 liters and sometimes I add some big side pockets that I borrow from a Bergans Viking which was a model they made for the army some years ago, they convert into a daypack also and have adjustable volume too. For loads above 25kg i find Osprey packs not good enough compared to packs form gregory(Baltoro Pro95/Denali 100), Bergans(QSS) or Norrøna(Syncron). Lowe Alpine used to have some great packs in this size but I haven't tried the newest models.
What I dislike the most with packs of not scandinavian brand, is the volume and packability. They always make them too small and narrow in the bottom, with few options to fit equipment on the outside, so that you have struggle when you fill them for a couple of weeks in the mountains. But i get it, scandinavian outdoors life is a little different to how they do it elsewere in the world.
My best experience in packability was the Bergans QSS Viking II which has up tp 130 liters of volume. That makes it very easy to pack without having to be careful how you fit things into it. And it was solid as hell too. Especially in winter time this is a great pack.
I can really recommend army models made by the best brands if you need big volume, Lowe Alpine used to have one, Berhaus still have and of course Norrøna with their ParaRanger and Recon packs.
I agree... But this big backpacks are super heavy...usually... But you can go everywhere with them and you can carry a dead cow in them almost!

Can you extend the length of the hipbelt? If im not mistaken, you can adjust the hipbelt longer by removing them, adjust the length, and velcro them back.
Nope... this model has fixed hipbelts. I have tried serveras times because it's really stupid to make a backpack with not adjustable hip belts!

I use a Tatonka Bison 75+10 and it is really capable of heavy loads with its X1 suspension system built quality is very high and the whole pack is very robust
just a quick question: how come you don't pack your heavy items at the mid/bottom? wouldn't that solve the issue of the top part not being rigid enough?

Good question.
When I skiing I want the weight point of my backpack to be low. That's giving me better balance. When I'm hiking I prefer a higher weight point. That's more comfortable way of carrying for me.
I hope that was a kind of answer... sometimes things are super clear for me and when I try to explain I reallycan see that its difficult to explain in a good way. Sometimes a question like this also make me change my mind.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA I've seen drawings of this back in my youth in the 1980'S lol. The reason for putting weight high is that in a normal walking position it puts the weight more over your hips and behind them as it would be low in the pack. Which is obviously very important when carrying a lot.
Osprey doesn’t make the Aether with the AG back suspension anymore. They went back to the flat back system they always had on the Aether. I dunno why the Aether copied the Atmos for a few years with the AG system. I guess it was so popular in the Atmos line that they thought it was a good idea. But the Aether series was always for the heaviest loads where you want the weight closer to your back. I think the Atmos does the AG system much better. It’s stiffer & more comfortable. It tops out at 65 liters which is more than enough for me. If i ever want to go for heavier loads I will get one of the new Aether packs without AG.
I wonder if you would have been happy with a size Large instead for the waist strap
When I measured it this was the size they recommended. But maybe you are right.

You know that the hip belt is adjustable, yes? The pockets are velcro-ed to the belt. Pull back the pocket, then extend the wing of the belt.
I think that’s a function that is added to the newer versions…

This pack looks different than mine, think mines a new one, these issue look to be addressed now. The hip belt are adjustable, the anti gravity system Im not a fan of at all, thats no longer used on the Ather

I love the front opening, adjustable hip pads/shoulder pads. I feel its hard to close the hip pockets, opening is a snap,
The Aether has an old and a new version where you can adjust the sizes at the shoulders as well as at the hips. (New version build 2021)
Loooooots of people have sad that so probably I got an old crapy version.

I have been using/carrying a ÜLA Ohm 2.0 which has a recommended maximum of 13.5kg. Its capacity is 63liters. There are numerous youtube videos reviewing this & other ÜLA models. My pack is relatively long (top to bottom) & narrow (side to side), Its main storage compartment holds approximately 35liters. I especially like the way 80% of the weight rests on my hips & 20% on my shoulders. ÜLA backpacks must be purchased online from the manufacturer located in Utah. ULA is readily accessible over the phone if a person has questions about the pack's torso length or hip belt length. It is the most comfortable backpack I've ever owned. The Torso length has an approximate 3" adjustment by raising or lowering the hip belt on each backpack for an exact fit.
There are numerous youtube videos on many other Osprey backpack models.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA You most likely would prefer the Catalyst 75L capacity & 18kg weight limit or the Circuit 68L capacity & 16kg weight limit.
There are numerous "reviews" on the Catalyst & the Circuit on youtube.
I have the same version of this backpack in size 60 and also have issues with the hip belt. Had bruises after a 10mile hike that made me want to look into the newer atmos 60 instead

I think you should test the Osprey if you have a possibility to do that. It's a lot of people who are happy with them.
I use a Seek Outside Unawreep 4800. That's 79 liter. Really good backpack and you will be able to load heavy duty stuff in to that like packrafts, firewood, camera gear etc.
It's expensive but a high end product.

Vad hade du för klättermusen ryggsäck? har kollat en del på dem, verkar ha bra kvalitét. Men in gick ju tydligen sönder, vilket är synd.
En helt fantastisk Mjölner 80l. Den var förvisso på tok för tung men väldigt skön. Gummidetaljer/fästen sprack och det blev därmed massor av svaga länkar... Har även en Arvaker 60l som INTE sitter bra men den rackarna håller... Jag skulle hellre ha en Osprey än min Arvaker tror jag... 😀

Kolla innan med avbärarbältet. Enligt några skall det tydligen finnas med olika vidd på avbärarbältet. Wiforss som jag köpte av hade inte det på sin hemsida iaf.

That aether 70 ag is the old version its a 2017 or 2018 version they have new version that has so much more adjustable belts and shoulder. Much nicer! I have your version & want a new version. I will also say my 20nyear old kelty Pacifica crest 5000 (85liter) it is an external frame and looks like it would be less comfortable but with heavy loads it feels nicer. It jusy doesn't have the nice features and is old school. The material is twice as thick and looks like it will last 3 generations.

Det finns lösning till höft justering i nya modeller & höjdläget ,samt packar man tyngre i nedre delen som det är tänkt löser det problemet med ramen böjer sig . Har en atmos 50 i large ( 53 liter ) från 2012 som är som ny med justerbara höfter ( spänne) samt höjd så den sitter perfekt på höften .
Jo...det fanns nog en anledning till att den reades ut... Tungt nertill vill jag bara ha om jag skidrar. När jag vandrar vill jag alltid ha hög tyngdpunkt.

Hi, I could not agree more about this backpack, I have the very same, liked the features a lot but I have the same issue with the belt and pain on the hips after 1-2 hours hicking, even not too much loaded. Maybe it depends on the anatomy and it may work perfectly for most people, but not for me. I will sell it. Keep the good work with the channel, I enjoy a lot the videos and the gear reviews! Hope I will travel to Sweden on day. Cheers!

Is this the only Osprey backpack that you have used? I'm interested in testing one more because it could be that it's only this model that doesn't fit to me.

I'm looking for a backpack to use on my fishing adventures. I need something that will easily take 15kg of gear but also carry an additional 30kg fish home. Yes I'm talking about one 30kg fish!!! Total bag weight will be 45kg. I noticed you said you have the Seek Outside Unaweep 4800 bag. Are you able to tell me whether the talon system is strong enough to carry a 30kg fish? I read another review where some guy said he wasn't happy with his Unaweep bag because it wasn't well made. I'm concerned if I spend a decent amount, I want the bag to last. Maybe he didn't look after his bag. Who knows. How is your Unaweep bag holding up? Has it lasted you? What are the pros and cons? Seek Outside state that this bag can take up to 200lbs+ and probably a max of 300lbs. No one is ever going to carry a load this heavy. If it can take 45kgs or 100lbs, then I'll be very happy. Thank you for your time and video. Would really like to see you do a review on the Unaweep bag
If the fish is 30kg and your gear 15kg then put the fish (in a drybag) in the backpack and the light (15kg) equipment in big drybags attached outside your backpack and maybe the heavy gear in drybags together with the fish inside the backpack.

I'm still happy with my Seek Outside. You maybe should check som of Norröna heavy duty millitary backpacks. They also have a good reputation.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Thanks for your speedy reply. This will only be a day backpack so I don't plan on needing the extra room of bags bigger than the 4800 which is already a 79L bag. I won't be carrying clothes, sleeping bag, cookware etc. We'll be staying at a motel but the long walks to some fishing ledges can take up to an hr or over to get to. I know I can comfortably fit all my fishing gear within a 50L bag but I need the room to accommodate a big fish to take home. I would prefer a bag with more outer pockets than the Unaweep but the strength of the harness frame is very important to ensure the bag doesn't fall apart when I'm carrying a heavy 45kg load.
It may be a good idea carrying the fish in the inner compartent of the bag as you suggested rather than using the talon. Only problem is the fish (tuna) will be about 1m to 1.3m long so if the internal bag is used then I would have to leave the top open. This is why I asked if the talon can handle a 30kg fish. It doesn't look like it can. Do you own a Norrona bag? If so what can you tell me about it and how does it compare with the Unaweep? I was going to buy an Osprey Aether 70 Plus bag until I saw your review. I'm very fussy like you so I trust your opinion more than those who worship their Osprey bags. I need a heavy duty bag. Lightness doesn't concern me. Durability and reliability are the key factors for me. I'm not concerned about price.
@@slyarsenal I know that a Swedish company, Fjällräven, sell something that they call 'Brandkårsram'. It's an frame only with harnes. It's made for fire fighters. On that you can add plastic boxes, guns etc. It's just basic and rough!
I wouldn't go for Osprey in your case... I don't own a Norrona but I have seen them. They are made for army stuff... 😉

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA I looked at Fjallraven but I can't find the Brandkarsram. Maybe they don't sell this in the Australian market. I think I'm tossing up between the Unaweep or Brooks bag from Seek Outside. The Brooks is a huge bag but I can fold it down to size and has two big pockets on either side. The harness frame is very important for me. I need something strong, reliable and comfortable. Are you happy with your Unaweep and has it lasted on your trips? What other accessories do you recommend me to buy with it such as straps, gatekeepers, lumber support? I read some people like the lumber support and some don't. Do you have one on yours?

Bought an Deuter Aircontact Lite 50+10 this summer after i sold my Fjallraven Kajka, will not carry as much weight in Deuter, but it's alot lighter with some features i really like.

Kind of irritating that most of your comments are positive about the pack, but you characterize it as "crap".
Maybe the excellent "deal" you found blinded you and you didn't size it well enough. Maybe you bought it used. Maybe you need a size large silly. And that ridiculous angry, thumbs down title photo of yourself, definitely doesn't correlate with the main gist of your review either. I do appreciate hearing about features that aren't quite right for some however. I guess that's what lends itself to improvement. As I see it, Osprey is one of the most innovative pack companies out there. I hope you found a pack that's right for you. I wonder if it's a different Osprey model!
When I bought this backpack you only get the size after different length of your back! That's a very silly system. I'm not a big guy and get problems with that. I bought it brand new from a internetshop in Sweden. The price was around 2000 Sek/ around 2400 USD.
If you read the comments you will se that I'm not the only one who get this problems. If I understand this correctly this was the 'old' system from Osprey. Today it's different.
This backpack is totally useless for me because it don't fit = crap. 😉

Jag har en osprey zenith 75. Den har lite kraftigare rsm tror jag men väger 2,3 kg. Jag bytte ut mitt höftbälte till en storlek större. Det löstw det för mig.
Denna här som jag har kan man inte byta bälte på. Det är fastsytt.

Är din Seek Outside Unaweep mycket större än Aether 70 AG?
Jag har sett massor med tester av Osprey AG och de flesta är eniga, det är inget man bär tungt med.
Dock så ska Seek Outside vara det, hade tänkt köpa en sån inför nästa säsong, behöver en i ~70-80 L klassen, så det vore kul att höra hur du tänkte då du köpte en Aether 70 AG då du har en Unaweep.
Jag köpte Osprey säcken inför förra sommaren. Använde den då och fick i vintras tag på en Seek Outside Unaweep 4800. Den är nog som en 70l säck ungefär. Ska ju rymma 79l men det behövs lockficka och sån där talon för att jag skall vara nöjd.
Den klarar last kan jag lova.

Funderar på att göra en review av den ganska snart även om jag bara haft den några månader. Vet ju ej om den är slittålig eller ej egentligen. Behöver ju gå med den nått år innan man kan säga sådant med säkerhet.

I'm glad someone else has mentioned how terrible this is. I'm selling mine as it's so bad. The hip belt leaves terrible marks on your body, the airflow design is useless. It's uncomfortable. Putting a bottle in and out is almost imposible and finally, the stupid STUPID way you attach hiking poles to the pack is ridiculous. The forclaz 100 pack for around €100 wipes the floor with this pack. Never again will I buy an osprey. It's all just hype. Thanks for your honest review.

For certain things, close isn't good enough, particularly the hip belt, if you're carrying a serious load. It doesn't take long for a little problem to become torture on the trail.

Har haft en Kajka, otroligt bra kvalite, men lite "gammeldags" och tung, men ska man bära tungt så spelar det mindre roll, men vill man bära lätt så känns det fel att ryggsäcken väger något kilo mer än andra lika stora.

Another Osprey disappointed here. I wish I saw your review before I bought the Aether 85. A lot of annoying zippers and details. I really don't like the small backpack from the lid: unnecessary extra-material. The lateral material for bottle is too weak. I will change this pack with a 60L Tashev: cordura ripstop, ykk, simple, lighter and half of the price. I think Osprey is targeted more toward fancy hikers. I am an oldie, not for me... I hope I can sell it, it is new.
It's really interesting to see that some people love their Osprey backpacks and some is like you and me. Not impressed at all.
I hope you will find someone who wants your backpack!

Osprey is trash. I absolutely agree with you. I made the same bad experience with Osprey backpacks, Aether and Xenith. Their backpacks are unstable, the hip belt is too short and not carries the load. The hipbelt is mounted with a small piece of velcro. It's not possible to carry higher load with this construction. I don't understand why people make such a big hype about this brand.
It's a backpack that usually have a low price... and they are a kind of good looking backpacks.
I agree but they also have very nice storage areas/pockets etc.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA A really bad thing aside from the short hipbelt are the shoulder straps. With the velcro adjustment it is not stable. How more you pull out the velcro lenght-adjustment plate at the back, how more unstable it becomes. If you loosen the load-control strapes the backback starts to shake/skid with every step you take. The whole backpack moves from left to right while walking.
Critichi osprey e non sai neanche come funziona. Le fasce lombari per esempio si possono allungare.
