Stallone tested him for Clubber Lang in ROCKY III and was crazy enough to hit and challenge this human wrecking ball....Shavers got pissed and almost killed Stallone with a shot to the liver....and Shavers said he actually pulled his punch and hit him half-speed

Way l heard with Stallone was they were light sparring & Sly said to Shavers 'come at me harder' & his wish was granted!
I think it's in a TV interview? And that's how Mr T gets the job.
But Stallone wdnt fight Robert Conrad for a charity event for kids...had other things to do... evidently.

Back in around 1984, I met Ernie Shavers as a young novice boxer with Minor A. C. in Youngstown, Ohio. I was 17 years old at the time. I put my fist up against his and it was twice the size of mine. His fist touching mine, you can feel the sense of his power just by touching his fist. He was so humble.

Earnie Shavers used to live in England ( Liverpool ) for a short time. He worked as a doorman and was a very gentle nice man. My friend was the DJ and introduced me to Earnie. The first thing I noticed was his gigantic hands .. I asked Earnie " so what's your secret to this punching power everybody tells me about " Earnie said " Boy you gotta chop alotta woood and use sledgehammers on tyres " Earnie explained that chopping wood trains the punching muscles and strenghens the hands and also teaches you how to use correct leverage. Earnie showed me how corkscrew my fist when throwing the right hand to really dig it into a man's face.... Earnie Shavers swore by chopping wood! I heard him say the same thing to many wanting to know... awesome specimen he was and a true gent

what a likable guy, but he was a killer in the ring. he hit ali with a shot that almost tore his head off but ali had an iron chin that people rarely mention.

All those punches, all those bouts, and he doesn't sound marble mouthed, very humbled, mild-mannered to be in this brutal sport

Earnie was a bar brawler with a hard head. Didn't seem to want to be fighting some days but always wanted fighters to remember he had fought them.

Too bad he never won a title. Classy act. What a devastating puncher. Would have loved to see him and Foreman battle, but think big George too tough for him. Better chin too.
