Back in around 1984, I met Ernie Shavers as a young novice boxer with Minor A. C. in Youngstown, Ohio. I was 17 years old at the time. I put my fist up against his and it was twice the size of mine. His fist touching mine, you can feel the sense of his power just by touching his fist. He was so humble.
Love Shavers for so many reasons. He was an awesome puncher, the hardest H/W puncher in history, a good boxer and fought the best, but for me his greatest asset is his respect for others and the fact that he is a real gentleman.
Earnie Shavers used to live in England ( Liverpool ) for a short time. He worked as a doorman and was a very gentle nice man. My friend was the DJ and introduced me to Earnie. The first thing I noticed was his gigantic hands .. I asked Earnie " so what's your secret to this punching power everybody tells me about " Earnie said " Boy you gotta chop alotta woood and use sledgehammers on tyres " Earnie explained that chopping wood trains the punching muscles and strenghens the hands and also teaches you how to use correct leverage. Earnie showed me how corkscrew my fist when throwing the right hand to really dig it into a man's face.... Earnie Shavers swore by chopping wood! I heard him say the same thing to many wanting to know... awesome specimen he was and a true gent
Ha. I remember meeting this guy when he was on the door at a bar in Liverpool. We weren't sure whether to believe his story about being a pro boxer so he gave us a DVD about himself to take home and watch. He was a really nice guy.
When jack Dempsey was in his freaking 70s, 2 muggers in nyc tried to take his money and hurt him. He plastered both of them to the point they were hurt and secured till the cops took them away.
The man was a true warrior in the golden age of the heavyweight era & always a true gentleman in and out of the ring. Its amazing how young Earnie looks here, very healthy man.

I was still an amateur boxer fighting out of the Firestone Park YMCA in Akron Ohio for Bill Sawyer but I was working in Canton Ohio and went to other gyms. Ernie was training for the Ali fight and was also working out in Canton before he went to NY or PA to training camp if I recall right. They had Ernie claiming over 10 foot tall chain link fences out in front of the Ohio National guard Armory in Canton to get in shape for Ali. Ernie was one of the nicest guys I met and while I was an Ali fan I was pulling for Ernie to win in that fight.
Fantastic show, the interviewer and Ernie were both awesome. I was at the 2nd Shavers vs Larry Holmes fight and could not believe that Larry got up after the shot Ernie have him, just unbelievable. Total respect for Ernie both as a fighter and as a human being.
