I love coleus plants. There are so many varieties and the colors are beautiful. My very first plant was a pink and green coleus. I bought it for a dime in the early 70s at a community craft fair. I was 7 or 8 years old. My Arkansas granny taught me how to root cuttings from it and I had a whole rolling plant stand full of the little buggers in no time. I still had babies from that first coleus when I moved into my first apartment years later!
Haha that was the first thing i thought when I saw all that light. I’m thinking about taking coleus cuttings but don’t really have any good spots for house plants that need more than minimal light.
Excellent video lads I've just started collecting coleus plants for my garden here in the UK, I've grown quite a few from seed which are growing on nicely ,and I've bought a few cuttings and they are doing well , I'm looking forward to seeing them in the summer months thanks again .
Topping the branches will make all the undergrowth shoot up. I top all my cutting so they branch out faster. Those electric lime if topped will bush out like crazy. Just the last to leaves on the branch for best results. Cheers your plants look healthy.
When I first saw coleus seeds I said to my self meh these are TINY! But after growing a few I absolutely love them. They are great as fillers in outdoor pots, they come in so many colors!
As usual, it helps so much if you tell us what zone you're in. Otherwise, dates mean nothing and it's just harder to take your advise when the timing is questionable.
A very informative video. I am in the process of doing exactly what you are doing for the first time. I learn by seeing someone else actually do it, so this was a great learning experience for me. I love your channel. It's always very interesting. The two of you work so hard and have a lovely home and farm to show for it. I also love your dogs. I'll keep watching. Good luck with your present day projects. Love your new addition 'SNOW'.
Thank you! We always appreciate your comments and your support. Coleus are still one of our all time favorites, and the window sills are full of propagated plants right now. Will be soon time for us to pot them up.
I really appreciate you posting this video. I have a large heated greenhouse and usually donate about 1,000 plants every year to non-profits for their fund-raising plant sales. I'm going to try growing coleus for next year and am using your video to max the number of starts I have. When is it too late to take cuttings? And what do you do about flowers? I pinch off the flower spikes when they develop, but it seems that just activates the flowers to grow from the next node down. Do they ever stop producing flower spikes once they start? Many thanks for any suggestions!
You can take cuttings any time of the year, just keep in mind that they take longer to root in cooler months. Blooming you can't stop, you can just postpone it with pinching. Plant is trying to reproduce. Sometimes we would do a hard sheer, and sheer the plant all the way back to a few short stems. Looks ugly for few weeks but then grows back beautifully
I ordered some clear 2oz. Makeup jars and going to get some face pads going to try and grow some coleus seeds in them might work with pinches too. When if I’m successful and grow i can try pinches too.
My question was answered about use or non use of hormone or root fertilizer when propogating. Couldn't watch whole video bc our internet connection was interrupted by a contractor cutting our connection to subdivision a few days ago, 🤨. Thanks!
Hi, nice video. Can you root a coleus in water over the winter if you're concerned that the mother plant won't over winter? If so, do you have to sustain the roots with fertilizer?
Why are my coleus always tall and leggy? I want them to be compact like yours. But I don’t have a south facing window, I have them in an East window where they get a lot of filtered morning light. Any suggestions?
How would you plant Coleus from seeds. I live in a hot country & at the moment its the monsoon season. I have just got the seeds at the moment & no Coleus plants to pinch & propagate.
My coleus never grow that big. It's a very short summer warmth-wise in Ireland. But I have taken some cuttings before, so this video has put me in the mood to do some more. 🤍
@@GardeningGays Yes, a lot of mine perished in the greenhouse during the winter months although the pelargoniums made it through mostly, even with some heating, so I'll take your advice and keep my best coleus plants in the house this winter, space & light permitting. I'll try potting into bigger pots too. Thank you. Always very interesting videos.
Your video is great!! We had a slow start bc of cold weather until MID-JUNE!!!! overnight temps still quite cold.. high 40's-mid 50's!! It was a short season for my coleus un zone 5b (NWIndiana-South East Chicago, IL). The best ones that survived were "Silk Stocking", dark burgundy, Electric Lime and celery/dk green edged varieries this year. Beautiful show and bushyness. Do you use any powder hormone or liquid root fertilizer when propogating?
@@GardeningGays . So. The cuttings that grow over winter are planted in the spring. Then cuttings are taken from them in the fall and the plant in the ground dies over winter?
@@GardeningGays . Well now I understand. I couldn’t figure out what you guys were doing with the plant in the ground. I thought over wintering meant to bring the whole plant indoors. I certainly can’t do that! I’m trying this this fall. Thanks so much 😉
That's a rooting agent or rooting hormone. It helps plants develop roots, but as we mentioned in the video, we don't find it necessary with coleus propagation. In fact, our cuttings do better without them. Some plants may benefit, we don't think it's necessary here.
We have found that the best solution is to place the pots onto deep saucers and water the plant by filling the saucer and letting the plant/soil soak it up. This way, you're not watering directly on the soil to provide a moist environment for gnats to thrive.
So disappointing when all these UA-camrs can't wait a few weeks to show results. You're not an expert, and we don't know if we should follow your methods when you don't show results.
Gardening is trial and error. If you used a search engine you'd find out cutting the leaves is a pretty well known technique to propagate plant cuttings to put energy to the roots.. No one owes you anything, you sound so entitled and ridiculous. Good day.

My new Favorite plant !! I never knew you can keep as a house plant and have outside absolutely love it
What an amazing video, thank you for making this! Also, I’m jealous of the windows in your home - the plants look so happy there.

👋🏼 👋🏾 🇬🇧 Thank you so much for your kind words. Truly appreciate it. We are so eager to start to propagate them but need to wait a few more weeks
Your plants are gorgeous. I've been propagating coleus on my kitchen window for a month and they are doing great. Time to put in pots.
That's fantastic, what varieties do you have?
Oh, and yes!! I had a Cherry Pie one that did extremely well, suprisingly in full sun too!
We find that as long as they get enough water, they will do well even in the full sun
Just made my new plants for next year. Thank you guys!

Dollar tree, in the spring or summer
@@GardeningGays Thanks. Didn’t know Dollar Tree had nice pots. I’m going to go by to take a look.
Definitely going to try this! Love coleus!
Thank you I learned a lot from this video…👍🏼👍🏼

Just plant them into the pot, keep it moist and well lit

Pot size and soil quality also dictates how big plant will grow, along with right temperatures. We had them grow huge inside with the right lighting

You might mention to use purchased potting soil and not ‘yard dirt’.
You can use any soil, however better the soil better plant will do

No rooting agents at all, wet soil, don't let it dry and they will root with in 10 days
In the winter, do you dig the whole plant up and pot it to bring it in or do you bring cuttings in and propagate them for storage inside?
Way easier to deal with cuttings, just take a few of them. In case some don't make it
@@GardeningGays . So. The cuttings that grow over winter are planted in the spring. Then cuttings are taken from them in the fall and the plant in the ground dies over winter?
Pretty much, plant can't take temperatures 40 or below

Which chemical have you used in that white bottle

Do they need special treatment and care outside in summer and winter
Plenty of water in summer time, in the winter they need to be brought in. They don't like temperatures below 45
why without a greenhouse..I cover it with a transparent lid
We deal with mold when we do, having a better air flow and no lid prevents that
how do you keep gnats out of the house?
We have found that the best solution is to place the pots onto deep saucers and water the plant by filling the saucer and letting the plant/soil soak it up. This way, you're not watering directly on the soil to provide a moist environment for gnats to thrive.
Cuttings seem to get damaged on some coleus. Not sure why they get damaged leaves. Wilting on some is happening.
We get that sometimes, not really sure why
Do you plant your Coleous in the ground or simply leave them in pots outdoors for the summer?
Both, we just bring them in fir the winter. They can't handle temperatures below 45
Leaves also root.
Never knew that, thank you
❤
