Glad you made it to anchor safe. Hope Grace's sleep issues don't last. If you can't find a gasket for the hatch you can soak it in hot soapy water and it should seal again. Last summer I replaced the Lexan in my hatch but couldn't find the gasket so I did this and it had no leaks. Happy St. Patrick's Day!🍀☘🍀
We have a new gasket on order for both hatches, good tip tho! The sleep issue is going to be something to manage on or crossing. Historically Grace was able to fall asleep whenever on passage
Be proud of yourselves! Be thrilled that Calico handled the seas with precision and success! Knowing now that if you are placed in that predicament again, you are truly seasoned sailors who can do it!!! Congratulations 🎉 Sleep well.
wow you guys! reminds me of some of my days coming south!….Looked gnarly..no fun, even for us seasoned sailors! Was great meeting you in La Cruz a few weeks back, I’m in Tenacatita now headed to Melaque. Good luck on the crossing! see you in French Poly next season! Capt. Lawnboy, Wades Aweigh Anacortes, WA
Thanks for filming when you didn't feel like it. We've been in similar conditions and as we watched you guys, we felt for you, that stuff is just brutal. We're glad it was only for a few hours and there was no real damage. Now for the find-and-fix-the-leaks game. We're cheering you on! Namaste. 🙏
Glad to see that you didn’t turn around when it got a little nasty. Might as well get acclimated to those conditions a little bit. There won’t be many bailout points in a 3+ week crossing! Feel better Grace! Keep your chins up. Remember this is fun! Lol😊
Another round of " *unnecessarily large waves* " ! 😬🙃 Thanks to Grace for finding the strength to film an describe those hard and stressful times. 😘 And thanks to Bill for steering that lovely nutshell ⛵ to safety. 👋
There is an episode of sailing Brickhouse before the captain died of covid in south Africa about how to make your hatches more waterproof. If I remember right he put a bead of rope around the gaskets to make a tighter fit. You should go out and look for that episode, it will be back before covid, so a few year's. That or reach out to sailing Brickhouse and ask his widow who's sailed back to the Caribbean with Brickhouse.
Hey Grace!! Don't take any BS.from King Neptune , You got this Girl!!! And Bill, you are an absolute ROCK STAR All the ❤ and Best wishes from an old dude from Pender Harbour BC ❤❤❤ 😎👍🇨🇦
Crazy. So glad you 2 are ok. The camera does not truly show how bad it truly was. Wishing you the best on repairs. Hope you get the easiest weather window when you cross. Blessing!
We too had some unforeseen bad weather making that trip a few years ago. We were burying our fore deck and the prop was coming out of the water. But our Westsail 32 handled it like a champ!
You guys made the right choice as you got deeper into the weather. Chasing deck leaks is such a pain. With time and offshore fatigue they are inevitable. Just keep plugging along.
We had exactly the same experience coming up from Tenacatita to PV. We bailed into Ipala abd anchored overnight as seastate was so bad. Completely understand how you were feeling. 😢❤
I have been through a sail like that and they suck at the time, but when time does pass they make a great story and memory. Props to pulling through, cheers!
Those conditions definitely qualified as snotty, no doubt about it. Reminded me of a forecast light passage across Biscay that proved to be exactly the opposite. The relief of finally getting parked up in a sheltered spot was physical, mentally we were completely numb for several hours. Sorry to hear about the leaks, that sucks but as you said, better to find them before the big jump. Stay safe, cheers, R.
@@CalicoSkiesSailing 👍The stories have foundation, when it gets nasty there it’s very nasty indeed. It’s not a place to be scared of, just very certain of the true conditions because of the combination of an uninterrupted view of the Atlantic to the West, the bottom profile and the shape of the bay, which promotes a really lousy confused sea state due to reflections from multiple directions. Add that all to the prevailing Westerlies making it a lee shore and you’ll appreciate the potential problems. When it’s ok, it’s fine, nothing to fret over. When it’s not, it can become a bit lumpy or a little spot of hell on earth. Take it easy, hope you’re getting ahead of the dribbles! 😎👍🍻
Sounds like what I once experienced in the Mona Passge. Worst washing machine seas ever. You must know by now those Sabre’s are notorious with water seeping under the toerails . (can’t keep varnish nice) Those leaks don’t look that far outboard but ……. you’ll sort it out, you always do. ❤
Yea we've sailed near the mona and it was pretty gnarly lol. Yep I was actually just sealing some of the toe rail bungs as we speak. I've gotten to the point of jamming buytl tape in. Not pretty but keeps the boat dry. The leaks were genoa track and chainplate. The chainplates are getting rebedded this week
We hope Grace's hormone medicine isn't to strong. Between this passage and recovering from her operation her condition wasn't good. Bottlebottle on Amazon for a 26oz container is $29.99. Ranked 4.3 with cons being; 1. leaks from lid 2. cap could be better 3. not for hot beverage. Great to see the new autopilot working out, engine without issues, and chicken Rizzuto looked marvelous. Good job you guys, time to cross the Pacific!
Yea the hormone therapy is sort is known not to be good for you but necessary to help prevent recurrance. She's going up to the US to see doctors this week 🙏
Well, that was one hell of a ride!! Glad you guys are ok. On the broken outboard skeg, you might want to try to find a reconditioned lower unit. It can be repaired, but it’s easy to warp the case. Hope you guys get it sorted, if you haven’t by now!!
Yea I think I may just leave it it for now, its like $700 for a new lower unit we bought the motor for like $1000, Just have to be careful with the prop when landing on beachs
Well that didn't look like fun at all, glad you made it safely to an anchorage. Sure hope those new leaks don't turn into another major project! Hopefully you won't see any seas that rough again for a long long time or never again even!
Note to self, avoid using Calico as a submarine, then your deck wont leak so bad!! You two are amazing n I could never do what you do. I realize when in the thick, not much you can do but ride it out n that's why I am not there.

wow that sounds crazy?! Calico pushed her way through it felt fairly in control. Just had to match the speed to make headway and maintain steerage but not so much to start pounding the hull
y'all are going to have a rough time without a proper headsail to punch through steep short seas and swells. just about all the 1fin keel plastic classics are going to buck like a bronco if trying to pump along on a reefed main like that. You need a good heavy air jib with a high-ish clew (aka a yankee) to pull you through the chop, not push. good vid, but you don't have to suffer to that extent! fair winds
Code zero term gets thrown around incorrectly. Long story short is more a term for a ratings rule mid-girth of at least 75 percent. You have what appears to be a more of a Gennaker.
Guys, With the dingy outboard being so old, a new lower end may cost more than the old outboard is worth. It maybe time to buy a new outboard engine for the dingy. Question is do you have the funds for such a large purchase. Buying a new to you outboard is another option. How do you find a reputable place that sells used outboard engines. I would a buy a new engine. That choice is faster, easier, safer, quieter, and much better fuel mileage and easier to get new parts going forward. It is so easy for others to spend your money. Grace uncovering a delicious meal after that passage. Such a great way to wrap-up the day. Great job!!
So good! Great to hear from you Brad !
That was a hell of a ride. I'm glad you guys are safe. What a way to check for leaks!
That's one way to find the leaks, submarine the boat! LOL

Hectic seas Happy you guys are safe and sound
Yea most intense sea state we have seen in a while
We too had some unforeseen bad weather making that trip a few years ago. We were burying our fore deck and the prop was coming out of the water. But our Westsail 32 handled it like a champ!
Yikes! I feel like our prop came out or cavititated at one moment, crazy stretch of ocean!
I’m glad you are safe❤
Phew! was a good test for Calico :)
For the sleeping issue, a magnesium supplement might help.
Groovy episode. Huge waves while sailing can be a bitch. Glad everyone is alright and the boat is safe.
You guys made the right choice as you got deeper into the weather. Chasing deck leaks is such a pain. With time and offshore fatigue they are inevitable.

Yea the leaks seem to be at our chainplates and hatch gaskets. Not surprising after sitting in the desert for 8 months. Dried out the seals

Wow. Crazy gnarly sail. Glad you made it to anchor safely. Thanks for sharing your videos. Looking forward to smoother sailing adventures.😃

Bill, plenty of sled left there for a sled guard. Drill a couple of holes and bolt it on :)
my concern is that its a sloped part, I think just gonna leave it for now and be careful with the prop
