Not many of those men left in the world sadly. Both showed (Doc and Wyatt vs Ringo) and could use a lot more real men vs today and bullshit finesse it and hope it works out. Doc passed early but went down with more pride and respect than 99.9% of cowards when times get tough. That's why people still remember him today.
One of the most underrated performances ever. Val Kilmer was mesmerizing in this role. He just about stole every scene he was in. The oscar people failed to do their homework that year!
...i agree with you..val also killed it in the scene where john ringo was drunk downtown ..an the i got two guns one for eaxh of yah...i have watched this movie at least 30 times ..can you beat that...
Ringo just about shit himself when he realized it was Doc. Great acting. Very hard to portray false bravado because you're acting out someone who is pretending to be confident. Act too confident and Ringo's underlying nervousness doesn't come through. Act too scared and you lose the essence of Ringo's character. Val was obviously phenomenal, too.
It's funny because IRL, the coroner came to the conclusion that Johnny Ringo committed suicide when a single round had been discharged from his revolver and the only wound he had was near his temple
Trademark line, cigarette pull, step-smoke release-head lift-peripheral light leaving half of his face in shadow… I think it’s one of the most artful, exquisite entrances (especially surprise entrances) into a scene in all of film making. Masterful performance and masterfully shot. So brilliant.
Loved this movie and scene. No one stumbles around after a head shot from a .44. But who cares? It's Hollywood and sometimes you just have to ride with the show.
Easily one of the best scenes in a western. Both actors delivered wonderful performances, both subtle and dramatic. This is the modern western film of our time, and this scene is one of the reasons why.
I just love the part when Doc comes out of the shadows as the sun hits his face blowing out the cigarette smoke saying confidently,"I'm your huckleberry." I also love it when Johnny stops still, realizing that he was about to be a dead man soon cause' he knew Doc would get the job done! He knew Doc was a stone cold badass!!
To this day in my opinion one of the most fantastic modern era westerns ever made. Amazing cast incredible acting and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday was a perfect choice. And Kurt Russell playing Wyatt Earp it was as if he was Wyatt Earp's distant relative because they looked so similar
Little trivia for you: Willem Dafoe was one who was originally considered for the role of Doc Holliday, but because of his film The Last Temptation Of Christ, the studio decided against him. In fact, that aforementioned film has still kept Dafoe out of certain roles, due to its controversial nature.
Awesome scene and when Ringo starts to try to back peddle from his previous bravado and say he was kidding, Doc answers coldly and with menace "I wasn't"
Then Ringo says eff it. Throws the mask back on and says “let’s do this.” Everyone comments on Docs acting, but Ringo’s close expressions are just as great
I love this scene, this was one of Val Kilmer's best performances, if not the best. The real Johnny Ringo was found next to a creek with a gunshot to the head, the consensus by, most historians, is that he shot himself, so I liked how they included the head shot in this scene. Great freaking movie, a top 10 all time western, in my opinion.
It's believed somebody shot him with a rifle while sitting in the split of a tree where he was found. His horse was found with his boots upside down in the stirups, which westerners did when bedding down..to keep critters from making a home in them. Scorpions and rattlesnakes...
The actual gunshot was to the right temple consistent with a suicide. Movie had it to left temple. And Doc did just walk over the gravesite as they buried Ringo where they found him. Of course, the characters wouldn't have known that.
@@RedDevilSGT Hmm. Are you sure it's meant to be huckle bearer? I've never heard of a huckle before. Why does Kilmer say Huckleberry? It doesn't seem like "huckle bearer" in that accent he's putting on. That would be more like "huckle berreh" I think. I appreciate the info, really! But I'm wondering if you have further info on that so I can take it to my grave as fact :)
Half a dozen of the most famous film sentences right there in a few minutes ! 3 or more actors should have won Oscars or at least a serious nomination. In my top 5 ever !😎👍
The scene perfectly illustrates the contrast between the 2 gunfighters: Ringo spent the earlier part of the movie impressing people with his gunplay and intimidating everyone, while Doc amused him, studied him, and never showed more than he needed to. But when Doc was ready, there was never any hesitation, and he never started the fight, even when he challenged him for the last time as he just saw it as unfinished business. Both were deadly, but while Ringo was in it for glory and thrills, Doc was in it to kill if him or Wyatt was threatened. One killed for thrills, the other when it was called for, and didn't miss. And Ringo died so that Wyatt would live. Great storytelling.
This to me was the best movie on the ok corral and Wyatt Earp ! Val Kilmer played the best Doc Holiday ever ! He should have one the award for that year as best actor he sure as hell deserved it in my opinion
The way he walked between the two trees was the illusion of death's door, which I thought was well done, like Doc was literally walking outside from the mausoleum.
Val did an excellent job in this movie. By far this was his greatest performance. I also have to say bravo to the actor who played Ringo. You could see the fear in his eyes when he says let’s do it.
Val Kilmer is a highly underrated actor. Even in the worst of his movies, by most people's standards, (Batman Forever) he was one of the best parts of the movie.
That look on Doc's face when he said "I Wasn't" was EVERYTHING, scared the shhh out of Johnny .. Doc had been wanting to kill him since the scene in the bar he was looking for the right opportunity to end him.. Johnny for the first time was shook and had to come up with some false bravery since he knew there was no going back.
They say acting is all about reacting. You see a lot of sitcom stars who just recite lines. The pure beauty of talented actors is the subtext. You can see it in Ringos eyes when it goes from worry to recklessness when he commits to the contest. I think Val’s character was more complex where he wants to show that he hopes he is going to lose so he can avoid dying of tuberculosis, and disappointment he hasn’t yet found a worthy advisory to challenge him.
For people who think you just go limp when shot in the head, SOMETIMES that can be the case but most of the time it is a pretty horrific site. Some folks will writhe and convulse like crazy.
I hear that a bullet to the head (depending on the caliber) can last a long time before you die. I mean there was a dude who survived a 69. Caliber musket shot to the head! Like wtf!
Your brain releases natural adrenaline or morphine aka dxm. Basically your brain is preparing your body to either go through a traumatic or life-threatening injury to where you are almost numb. Once Johnny Ringo knew it was a possibility he might die his brain knew he was in danger, he didn’t feel a thing
Well, that is not going to happen. His career is completely in the sh1tter at this stage, with cr@ppy, direct-to-video schlock in which he is just mailing it in.

A bullet to the head is quicker. Tuberculosis is a slow lingering disease which causes chest pain, coughs, night sweats , nausea and generally weak and unwell. 1:23 - I always liked that one look of deep concern on Doc's face as they start to circle. I think it's vital. It's the only time he ever has that face during the movie, not during the OK Corral shootout or any of his other confrontations. It's a great choice by Val or the director to have that look in there, that he knows he's in deadly peril. He's governing his fear and it just flashes across his face. It makes the victory payoff much sweeter when you show just a little vulnerability. That you had fear and overcame it. That there was a real chance you could lose. That your opponent is a _real_ threat. That's good story-telling. A lot of modern day director's never have their protagonist show any fear at all, and that's a mistake. It humanizes their struggle, we empathize with them and it builds up their opponent. Rather than just rolling through them like a bad-ass. I bring up Ripley in Aliens as an example. Lots of fear and which she overcame and got the victory. Much more satisfying.
Also to include even John wick has a bit of hesitation or even what you mentioned in your comment of the emotions and facial expressions are when someone could be facing a dire situation. Even John wick flinches yet still persist to do what's needed to be done. Yeah it's cool when a director sets in a realistic undertone to match someone's response in a real life physical confrontation. As you mentioned you may have fear but you push through it.

He was pretty good in Top Gun.
