[WIP] Earthquake Weather | Rain World AMV

- Hi, this is Awniber. Rain World is a beautiful game that has impacted my past four years, I love Rain World and it led up to this project, the Rain World Earthquake Weather AMV. The song hugs the game narrative, and ties together the story of slugcat and that of iterator, where both struggle with and fight against their different plights.
I first encountered this song in 2019 in a school assignment where I design a geometric representation based on the song. Right then, I felt it has a "wandering in an apocalyptic world" vibe to it. The song features a nonchalant beat, but it simultaneously feels like a heartfelt catharsis from someone who's been tenacious and diligent in their enterprise. It paints a picture where they strive with utmost sincerity in their personal endeavour, all while the world continues to amble at its own pace, not ruffled in the slightest. I came across Rain World in that same year, and it felt like a sign that I need to do this.
So far it's mostly done in Clip Studio Paint EX. While I've joked about making animation in what was an illustration software, I have come to learn its ways and capabilities in terms of animation. It does surprisingly more than I gave credits for it; I learned a lot during the process, and it manifests in the animation. For example, early on, it stutters because I treated it more like a storyboard, but then I discovered the exhilarating 2D camera feature, excavated a different, workable layer organization approach, and that enabled me to experiment more with camera movements. There are A lot of shots; and from this repeated making process come some insights. For example the attention paid to how focal points link between and continue its trajectory through shots; and designing visually interesting path, movement, transformation for the focal point. The principle of arts and elements of design do apply to the "invisible" focal point, and I find that intriguing.
I've been wanting to make something for Rain World since 2020. I made a MAP part in 2021, and that urges me to make more. One year ago, I associated the song with the game, since then I've been inching on it. I thought I could power through it during the college summer months, but I overestimated myself and underestimated the workload for a full animation; and just like that, school season returns, again.
Let's see whether I get to see through this the coming year, eh?

Watching other people's Rain World blind playthroughs is one of my pastime. While I find people reacting differently very interesting, I certainly also identified some common experiences build into the game itself shared by many players... this is one of them haha.
@@Awniber I remember when I first saw one of them I had watch a video on rain world before playing the game and I remember it mentioned they don't attack if you show your not a threat so I would just drop everything I had and lay down, not move a inch because I was so scared they would attack if I did
I love all of this. Especially the scene with moon. The movements, her reaction, and the slugcats reaction to her reaction. And the fact it was timed to the music. Perfection.

This is probably one of my favorite AMVs (not just for Rain World, but in general) regardless of it being a WIP, I keep coming back and watching it. The camera angles, movement and character expressions are just so good!
The ladder half of the amv almost perfectly depicts the shit scug’s go thru to beat rainworld TwT. I felt the pain at certain parts it was so real

This is one of the best animatics I've ever seen, and I'm so glad it's of one of my favourite games of all time. It just feels so cinematic and is just so well made even though it's only an animatic right now.

It's become a 'thing' where anytime me n my friends see this we have to click and watch it again, it's so stunning and I'm so excited for if you ever finish it! I love the part when it gets really rainy with the screenshake; aswell as the beginning sequences with Moon and Pebbles. AHHH and Moon's scream tied to the beat.... aah and the scavs...+ the big rectangle, that I assume will eventually be a leviathan? IDK I love every part of this so much, genuinly so stunning already

Rain World spoilers, not that this animation doesn't already show what I'm about to say... but just incase?
Beginning with the start of it all, where Pebbles gets totally obsessed with ascension, running simulations to find a solution. Then he gets impatient and consumes a ton of water to run many simulations, trying to find a way to ascend at a much greater speed. Moon finally forcing Pebbles to stop (she needs the water too D:), causing Pebbles to get the Rot. Although it was far too late for Moon... Hunter reviving Moon, with a flash of No Significant Harassment's symbol. The overseer seeing Hunter, which causes it to scout out later slugcats in hopes that they will also be helpful to Moon. The scenes before the fall of Survivor/Monk that really feels like Jolly's co-op. Then, the slugcat questioning why the lizard gave up pursuit so quickly only to realize rain was coming. The usage of pipes and showing the creature indicator on them. A falling creature (blue lizard probably lol). Survivor waking up with the overseer staring at them. The various symbols that the overseer uses to show Survivor (or Monk) things. The feeling of creatures ganging up on you (the vulture and the lizard scene). Showing not just the usually shown creatures, but also lesser ones like garbage worms, leeches, and pole mimics. The very relatable scene is crawling past scavengers and getting rocks thrown at you. What looks to be a leviathan chasing slugcat. Then we have Survivor (probably? hard to tell with no colors...) meeting moon, being very curious of them. Grabbing a neuron and them dropping it quickly after seeing Moon's reaction. Survivor then travels to Shaded and sees a coalescipede with a dead lantern mouse. Inching past monster kelp so they don't see them. Hiding from Miros birds and then using a flash fruit. The Leg experience with the white lizard and its tongue, then grapple worming through the underhand. Getting Survivor karma to enter Pebbles, losing (or tossing) the grapple worm after finding out it's useless in zero gravity. The suffering known as Unfortunate Development, breaking through memory complex, and finally entering Pebble's chamber.
Seriously nothing is missed, many little details are here and there, no creature is left behind so far. Really feels like a Rain World playthrough but in animated form. Which is truly a feat to accomplish. I will love to see this when it is fully finished. I wish you the best of luck.
These are very spot-on descriptions...! (and yes, it surely is a little blue lizard that falls in the heavy rain haha) The "journey" part is heavily referencing a huge repository of play-throughs I have watched... from which I've summed up a somewhat common experience.

I'm not very creative, so most of my comments are just observations that I make. I try to make my observations worth while, so little things I notice are especially important to me. It probably also helps that I am a Rain World lizard enthusiast.
Wow, as this stands now it's unbelievably phenomenal. I can tell you have put quite a lot of effort and love into this project. I got goosebumps multiple times while watching this, outstanding work. I am quite excited to see where you take it.

Thank you for the comment, kadw! At the moment and for the most part, backgrounds have been blocked in rather roughly and quickly to provide recognizable context to animation and try out the shot setups.
It is going to be my next objective after I finish (re)boarding more of the song. In my opinion working on backgrounds would be a treat because I find elaborating easier than coming up with shot ideas. haha :D
I love the way you have the slugcats move across rooms! I've never seen anything like it, and it's very cool. I like the sense of travel, but also how it follows multiple slugcats and the overarching plot.

WOW, this is just incredible!!! these shots are so rich and intricate -- there's so much scale and geometry, and the way the camera follows the characters' life-like movements across these vast, layered landscapes is just mind-boggling. there are genuinely some shots in this animatic that I struggle to believe came from a human mind (in a great way), you truly put so much thought and 'flow' into it!!! Pebbles' segment is just heartbreaking, really captures his nihilistic desperation, and the slugcats' section really gives the impression of what a 'hunted animal' must feel like. I've watched this so many times! fantastic work!!! 👏👏👏

Man do I hope this in still in progress! Some of the shots with the moving camera are so dynamic. I showed this to my friend who introduced me to Rain World, and he loves it too. Never did I think I would find such a insane animation from this little community, on one of my favorite songs! Keep it up!
The ACTION and MOVEMENT is this is absolutely incredible. Even as an sketch, this has to be one of my all-time favorites
I love how you drew and animated the Iterators! I really feel Pebbles’s struggle, being responsible for Moons death. The facial expressions and body language is perfect! I also love Moons tiny freak out at 2:32. I also love how you drew the Scavengers bullying the Scug at 2:10. Not often does an animation give me feelings directly from the facial expressions/body language. I’m excited to see the finished product! Also I’m just in awe of 1:42.
After all this time this is still the most anticipated rainworld animation

I know this is just another comment in the sea of them all, but this is honestly so phenomenal! I've always seen AMV's and MAP's from other fandoms, but rarely for Rain World, and this one looks so wonderful. I honestly look forward seeing the finished product so much!

Just realized (HUNTER SPOILERS)
Early in the animatic i hadnt understood why we saw moon but the survivor just ran away, but i just realized it was hunter! She was delivering the slag reset keys that nsh sent her for and we saw moons fractured conscience coming back.
This is so good and energetic! All the action sequences and dynamic movements are really cool to watch! Especially the scene depicting the monk and survivors opening. The way the slugcat gets thrown around is fun as well.
Woooow that was long! I wish I could understand the lyrics, but that felt like a movie! Really great job there!
I rewatched this a compile of times cuz it’s so good, I just realized that the reason at 1:40 the slug cat was confused on why the lizard left was because of the rain about to come haha

This is a wonderful and amazing animation!! The amount of movement and personality of the slug cats and creatures you portrayed is fantastic, from the slug cat 'falling' in zero gravity, to the lizards, and just all of it!! Plus the story from Hunter bringing a neuron to Monk and Survivor and encountering Hunter's rot-remains, that's *so* cool. Wonderful job!!

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! I cannot describe how much i love everything about this animation. I really like the way you draw the slugcats, the way you draw the iterators, the way you draw the scavengers, and the way you draw pretty much everything in this! And the animation is so well done, the movements feel so realistic!
edit: i've rewatched it a few times and want to say a few more things. You're really good at drawing perspective, and i think the perspective/camera shift at 1:42-1:48 was especially well done! Also, i know i've already mentioned this, but i love how realistic the movements feel for the characters- like how rigid moon is, compared to how squishy the slugcat is

Truth be told, I’m in animation college right now and the grind is real with job prep, school film, and thesis prep ; ; I hold this amv very dear, think about it all the time, and work on it whenever I could… This project has become very loaded with personal significance and therefore I’m very much determined to finish it eventually. The perspective and motion in this is so good! I animate once in a while, but I really struggle not making it flat - I understand space and distance well enough for drawings, but the way things move in animation is so much more intense. Slugcat’s movement is so expressive as well, and Pebbles, you can tell what they’re feeling with very few facial expressions.
You said in the description you were hoping to finish it one day, I hope you do. :) I’m going to subscribe and see what happens.

i keep coming back and rewatching this TT___TT i love how dynamic and full of life and emotion everything is, and your shot compositions and transitions are soooo nice omg. this song fits the vibe of rain world so well and this animation definitely captures the feeling of playing through the game RAHHHHH ITS SO GOOD!!! definitely one of, if not, my favorite rain world animations.. so so excited to see where u go with it!!

I love rainworld and I love earthquake weather by beck, so to see such a beautifully dynamic animatic involving both is so so incredibly exciting! Every scene here is like eye candy with your excellent movement and shots that correspond to the story and music. I can tell a lot of thought and effort went into this! Such amazing work : -)
