    I live in Rovaniemi and take this exact train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi a few times a year (traveling for work). I couldn't help but smile when you said something about a person having to be hardcore to sleep on the economy class seats, because that's what I do every time. :D It was so fascinating to see the journey through your eyes!

      Came this way on the last day of 1990 from Jyväskylä via Seinäjoki, using only a seat both ways. Walked on the frozen Kemijoki up to the Napaapiiri (Arctic Circle) past amazing Finnish granite glowing pink through the ice and snow blanketing the landscape. Suomi on kaunis, maaginen maa.

    During my Army years, I was stationed in Germany in the early 90s. I did security missions on trains. There was usually a "guard car" where we lived for the duration. We had to bring everything we needed to survive for lengthy trips. Still, it was some of the best sleep I've ever had. Loved watching Europe go past my window. Except France.....had some issues with the French.

When people of Normandy learned I had been in the 82nd Airborne Division....almost 50 years after D-Day...the people were very kind to me. On the train missions, we would get good treatment for other European countries. But in the dead of winter, the French refused to heat our guard car. "Our system cannot work on your car." But when we would get to the Italian border, their train-yard people would shake their heads and tell us that the "system" works on all European trains, and they have had the same problem with the French.

    We did this trip a few years back and it was awesome. They used to do a free breakfast box for all sleeper passengers. You were stopped a while outside of Helsinki because they were attaching a carriage containing cars other passengers were taking up North. We got on at a station just outside Helsinki after loading our car on to a separate carriage which was attached to the end of the train. ( Made visiting Santa and other Artic circle sights much easier as Uber doesn’t have the best coverage up there!!!)

    I'm 6'8, so I guess my experience was from quite a unique perspective. The shower certainly is an awesome feature! The shower in the SJ sleeper train was however in a separate room, looked like a mini spa with wooden details, plants, benches and piles of folded towels

    I’m Swedish so taking this trip in Finland is on my list of things to do! I live alongside the railroad between Gothenburg and Stockholm so my idea is to take the express train (MTR Express or SJ X200) up to Stockholm and then take the ferry, preferably Silja Line over to Helsinki and then the sleeper train up in Finland before somehow going over to the Swedish north, rent a car in Kiruna to drive out to the Kiruna mountains and over to Narvik in Norway and maybe some more places in Norway like Senja and Tromsø that aren’t too far away, and then take the SJ sleeper train home from Kiruna or Luleå. I spent time in the far north every summer of my childhood, road tripping with car and caravan, usually about 5000-6000km in a 4-5 week period, for me to take this trip I’m planning on my mind, it would be both to see new things (haven’t really been to Finland other than passing through a part of the far north on the way to Norway) and experience new ways of traveling as I (still) haven’t taken the ferry to Finland (or spent much time on a ferry at all, only a mini cruise from Gothenburg to Newcastle and back once, and some shorter trips) and the only time I’ve been on sleeper train was in China when going to and from Beijing from a city near Shanghai. The trip would also mean visiting places I remember from my childhood and that means a lot to me. Tromsø is a really beautiful city, as is the surrounding area, Senja may well be the most beautiful island of Norway, Narvik is really nice as well as is the road from the Swedish border in Riksgränsen. And the E10 from Kiruna over to Norway just has a special place in my heart with going alongside Torne Träsk, seeing the mountains towering around you with Malmbanan on the side of the road. Then in Abisko... Take the ski lift up on the mountain and just sit there and be astounded by the view with the lake on the left, Lapporten on the right and just Swedish mountain nature when it’s at its best! When I just relax, my mind travels to that mountain in Abisko...
    I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user with severe chronic pain though, so a trip like this would be very demanding, but I will do it, one day, and very likely document it as well and probably upload on UA-cam if UA-cam still exists by that time (there’s no knowing when I’ll take this trip and what the world looks like then)

The trains were a lot more rattly and I remember waking up in the middle of the night and deciding to stretch my legs only to forget when compartment I was in.. @@robertdefrank2550 It is, maybe you have more money that me, becuase for most of us plane travel is less roomy than the bus, and if you crash there's a much higher chance you aren't walking out of it. Plus for the most part they are crappy views, although I must admit they can be pretty awesome. Like when you descend through the clouds and see the cities, or go above the clouds and can see a night sky like never before. But after ten minutes I'm always "wow, if something happened to the engines now, we'd be toast".
      But here in canada our trains are pretty crappy as well. Switzlerland on a train was pretty awesome.

    So as an American you went from west to east on Amtrak in your new video, but for me that just normal as waking up. This seems exotic as hell.

    How exciting to travel to the artic circle. The train has all the necessary comforts, food looks delicious, and the landscape is beautiful. Thanks for giving us a train ride to such an interesting destination.

    I've watch a few videos of the Lapland train tour (including their 24 hr live cam here on UA-cam) but yours is definitely the best. Appreciate the detailed journey and more so, the food. #StaySafe

    That long stop just after Helsinki is the moment when they pick up wagons loaded with cars. Many people like to travel with their car so VR allow's that you can travel with it but you don't need to drive that much.

  • @Tuukkohakee
    @Tuukkohakee 2 роки тому +11

    5:23 Actually I think you were stopped because they attached car carriages to the back of the train, nice to see you in Finland!

    • @RoyalMela
      @RoyalMela 2 роки тому

      Yes, that was the Pasila station or Tikkurila station, where people can load cars into train and get them to Lapland while you sleep in the train. They do not do that in Helsinki main railway station because of limited space. You drive to Pasila or Tikkurila, drive your car on special traincar, then all the readily loaded traincars get attached to the train.

    • @Tuukkohakee
      @Tuukkohakee 2 роки тому

      @@RoyalMela Yep, I think the main one is the Pasila car station

    The long stop at the beginning of the journey was to add the car carriages on the train. And by the way, did you notice that there are 6 fingers in the hand shaped decorations on the restaurant car doors? :D

    I've done that trip, getting off in Oulu then on to Rovaniemi and yes, economy is fine in the day. I recommend you go to Norway and do the trip south from Narvik. The sleepers are lovely. The sleepers are also good from Rome to Bern, large and comfortable. Take care.

    Really loving the train videos, a couple of bucket list train trips for me my bucket list train is the Indian Pacific across Australia and I would have loved to do the Trans Siberian but that one is unfortunately a no go now with the Russia/Ukraine situation. But it would be really cool to see you do some videos on the Australian and South African trains. Thanks for the content!
