    Im am a math major in the U.S. and its interesting to compare to where maths in a U.S. college compares to college Maths abroad. Ithink we cover very similar topics just in a different order and with different titles and focuses

      The maths ALevel in the uk, which is the exam to get into uni, is leaps ahead of the SATS in the US. This just means that maths at university in the us may be more condensed with new information. So a lot more time studying is needed (?). Just my logical thinking, here. Not entirely sure.

    • @moth5799
      @moth5799 6 місяців тому

      @@travis7613 The SAT is the US's equivalent of GCSEs, not A levels. Most students looking to do maths in America will take AP Calculus, which is closer to A level maths (though it has a much more narrow focus on calculus, there's no matrices or stats or anything that's studied.)

    • @n30418
      @n30418 6 місяців тому

      @@moth5799us students take sats In grade 12 which is year 13 in the uk. Aps are equivalent to 1st or 2nd college level courses in the us. Unlike a levels APs are not compulsory to go to unis in the us but sats are.

    Hi Ellie thanks for this motivating video! I'm in French Canada and taking CS + Math now at age 34 😅 your content really hypes me up!
    What we have as CS + Math is not that in depth i guess, we have Logic and Proof; Discrete Maths; Calcus 1/2/3; Linear Algebra 1(application) and 2 (proof based); Prob and Stats; Real Analysis 1/2/3; Algebra 1; Complex Analysis; Topology.
    I feel i'll be missing out on so much on math stuff because the other half is for CS 😭

    Great video. Thanks so much.
    I was accepted to study maths at uni, but switched to English literature. I'm very happy and am currently doing an MA in screenwriting, so no regrets, but recently I've been wondering about how my life would be different if I stuck with maths. I wonder if I would have been happy, finished my degree, and what career I'd be pursuing. Stats was my fav maths branch.
    I still love maths and read textbooks for fun.

    Im going to take a maths and computer science course next year. Im interested to see what kind of topics are covered in maths. I enjoy maths a lot and if there was another type of maths to study at a level i would have taken that but theres only maths and further maths. Im genuinely exited to go and study maths and computer science at uni.

    This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Thanks so much. Coming from A level it always looks like there’s soo much content at degree level, is that right? How do you remember it all?

    • @EllieSleightholm
      @EllieSleightholm  4 роки тому +3

      Aw I'm so glad it was helpful!! There is a lot of content but before your Christmas exams you get a whole month to revise so that's a plus! What's nice about first year is the range of modules you take so it makes remembering things a lot easier! Personally, I found first year at my university quite full on but that's because we had tutorials and homeworks due every week so it was difficult to keep on top of at times. Then by second year you have them every 2 weeks so it's a lot more manageable (might be different at other unis). In terms of remembering it all, I just do a lot of revision! I write all the key definitions, lemmas, short proofs, corollaries, small examples, etc onto cue cards and continually test myself. I also do the tutorial and homework sheets again as well as past papers before my exams start. What's great is the amount of resources you get at university, that helps you study a lot for your exams. Hope that helps!! :)

    The thing with me, I’m not a natural genius at maths but I really enjoy it. Yes I might have to study a bit more than my peers but I enjoy studying maths so it makes me want to study. Do you think I’d be able to do a maths course even if I’m a little slower than my peers to understand it?

      Hi Stephanie,
      I was the same. I struggled my way to a Third in Pure Maths at Leicester (as part of a combined honours degree), and I still study and enjoy the subject now more than forty years later.
      Follow your heart and don't worry about whether you're good enough at the subject or not - that's your admissions tutor's job. They know what it takes to pass their course..

    Hey thanks for sharing this, really helped recap what I did in first year. I'm about to go into second year at Leeds, are there any particular topics that come up again that you would recommend going over?

    • @EllieSleightholm
      @EllieSleightholm  4 роки тому

      Hey! You're very welcome, I'm glad it was helpful! Second year compulsory modules (for me anyway) were:
      Groups and Vector Spaces - Cover equivalence classes & relations as well as your standard group theory from Number Systems and vector content from Maths 2
      Vector Calculus - This was pretty new stuff but it was one of my favourite modules. If you get lectured by Mike, he's amazing! Just cover vector stuff really but most of the content is completely new. I think the first chapter is lines and angles if I remember correctly😂
      Computational Mathematics - Loved this module! Cover any python knowledge you have - it will really help!
      Sem 2:
      Real Analysis - Cover sets and series because this content gets hard😂
      Linear Differential Equations and Transforms - this content is pretty new!
      Hope this helps!! :)

    Im studying education degree and i do not like it. I allways loved maths but only got a B in GCSE and never done furthermaths. Do u think i will do we well if i decided to do further maths and do degree after that. Or is it just not worth it ?

    • @EllieSleightholm
      @EllieSleightholm  4 роки тому

      If you enjoy it then yes!! If you do a subject that you enjoy, when it gets hard (which it inevitably will do), you’ll be able to persevere because you enjoy it. If you do maths/further at A level then you will be fine! At degree level it gets very hard so make sure you get up to speed on the relevant maths and you’ll be fine :))

    Great video, thank you so much! Just wondering were there any topics you didn't like at A-level but did at uni or vice versa?

    • @EllieSleightholm
      @EllieSleightholm  4 роки тому

      Aw thank you!! Ooo that's a good question! I always loved statistics throughout A-Level - I even taught myself Statistics 3 because I enjoyed it so much and it was definitely an area of maths I loved during my A Levels. I still love it at university but I am no longer taking any statistics based modules in my third year. I'm taking more applied and physics related modules which is something I would never have thought I'd while at A-Level! At University you figure out which modules you love more than others. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love statistics but I just happen to love applied maths more! Hope this helps!! :)

    • @EllieSleightholm
      @EllieSleightholm  4 роки тому

      Thank you! Yes, as part of Mathematics 1 and 2 we had a report and presentation that was worth 5% of that module. You got to choose what project you wanted and you also get to choose your partner. For Maths 1, we chose mathematical mistakes in movies - it was really interesting! The presentation was only 10 minutes and you only present to your tutor class which is usually a size of 15-20 students. However, with coronavirus, I'm not entirely sure how that will go this year. Hope that helps!
