In my opinion, they should have kept the scene from the book where Lily confides to Jenny, her mother about the abuse. Jenny explains how difficult it was to leave her abusive husband, leaving Lily with a whole new perspective on her mother, giving her the confidence to leave Ryle for good. Jenny also confesses that she knew that Lily purposefully neglected to say anything nice about her dad, and is proud of her. In the film, it's implied that she already knows about Ryle's abuse of Lily, and simply stayed because she loved her husband.
To me, cutting that part seems to undermine the entire point of the book/movie. Like "It Ends With Us" is commenting directly on the effects of generational trauma and the cycles of abuse, the normalization that happens when you grow up in that environment and aren't able to parse when something is wrong. I'm disappointed they not only didn't use the mother/daughter relationship to explore that, but they intentionally changed it to something that ignored it.
as a victim of intimate partner violence and being a r**** victim as a child this movie triggered the heck out of me. Legit I texted my friend saying watching this gave me ptsd flashbacks and honestly thank you so much for saying this needed to be marketed more responsibly and said there needed to be triggered warning. im literally almost crying
In defense of Elias thinking the movie is good, the movie doesn't make us go through the experience of Hoover's dogshit prose, so instead of being an awful cringefest it's a mediocre and artlessly made movie.
My cousin and her teen daughter had just gotten out of a VERY abusive situation when this movie came out. They were going to go see this movie to try to have a relaxing evening. Thank the gods I got to her first. They thought this was a romcom and needed a laugh, not to be faced unexpectedly with what they had literally just escaped days before. Since I talked to her first, they didn’t go.
I liked that, in the movie, they let the audience think Ryle has no contact with the kid. Opposed to the book, in which he has shared custody (bc oh poor thing was traumatized it’s not like abusers have a tendency to repeat behaviours right?)

And he seemed so genuine too, like it’s clear he understands the topic and is very serious about it. Not to mention how incredible his acting skills are, this had me scared so bad because of him. Definitely the best performance in this movie by a landslide.

I'm a guy but i just felt an insane amount of body horror from the IDEA of being pregnant with your abuser's child omg, and that's just the idea fucking me up... women or just anyone with a vagina, hope y'all doing fine and never have to go through something like that ☹️
A lot of abuse starts or escalates around either marriage or pregnancy because of the increased legal or logistical barriers to leaving and the vulnerability. It's extremely common unfortunately. Though there's some disagreement on the starting part, it's far more likely that controlling behavior was disguised and after pregnancy they go more mask off or the idea of the baby infuriates them as a fetus has more impact and concern for a pregnant person's health and attention. Depends on the kind of abuser. Also an extremely vulnerable time trumped by the danger when leaving an abuser. The abortions bans means abusers currently can attach their pregnant victims in court for abortions or miscarriages alleged to be abortions. This has been your friendly PSA info dump.

anyone who hasn't seen Justin Baldoni outside of this movie and Jane the Virgin should really check out his work. He's not just a phenomenal actor, he's also a genuinely decent person with a history of thoughtful discussion around important topics like racism, women's issues, toxic masculinity, abuse, and war. he's probably the only celebrity who deserves his platform and influence.
I guess they were limited because the younger actress pretty much nailed Blake livelys mannerisms and looks and so I guess they had to find a guy that would match her age
What I appreciated about the movie was that Ryle had red flags even before the abuse. How he wouldn't take no for an answer. I don't remember the scene but when he tells her to shut up. There's lots of little moments of tension that quickly switch back to sweet. There are clues. I didn't read the book, but from what I've heard, that wasn't as clear in the book. He'd just "snap" sometimes but be good the rest of the time.
personally i found that the signs were always there in the book as well. i never liked ryle from the start because of how insistent and obsessive he was (aka not taking no for an answer). man knocked on every apartment door in her building until he found hers so he could beg for sex after she already said no. he has a topless photograph of her that he's blown up and flaunting on the wall at the party too. it's gross and icky. not to mention the anger issues, his opening scene is literally him beating the crap out of a chair. 😭 i think a lot of people just didn't register this as problematic because unfortunately this kind of behaviour is seen as hot in her other books and in a lot of other romance books as well tbh. hell, real life men get away with behaving this way too unfortunately.

One of the best comments i saw about the end of the movie was how completely unrealistic and dangerous it was. People in abusive relationships risk of being killed goes up around the time they try to leave. To literally tell your abuser that you’re leaving is so dangerous. As someone who has not been in an abusive relationship, that was really sobering to read.
Yeah, that also seemed unrealistic, especially with no one else in the room. Maybe if there'd been a bunch of doctors and nurses nearby or something, I'd be more likely to believe it, but it's just the two of them and her newborn daughter... that doesn't feel like the moment or method to brooch that.

When I read the book, I didn't view the childhood shooting incident as the thing that made him into an abuser. I saw it as just another time he was an abuser. Notice no one is around to say whether the brothers were arguing or whether Ryle got hurt by his brother and he lashed out. Just another reason not to have him anywhere near her or the baby.

The least unrealistic part of this was that Ryle left her alone after what he did. In my experience, the man will act apologetic at first but as you refuse to reply turn back to violent anger and show up at your place of work or your new home (unsolicited). As others have pointed out, a traumatic incident in youth never excuses violence later. In fact, the vast majority of people with PTSD do NOT become violent. Just FYI

The fact that Justin Baldoni was the only person on the project who tried talking about the dv stuff on the press tour and promo material is so upsetting. And he seemed so genuine too, like it’s clear he understands the topic and is very serious about it.

the amount of gaggage…. there’s just NOOO WAY there wasn’t a content warning at the beginning. in this day and age, it’s hard to believe that no one forced them to add it. the horrible marketing choices is really the worst part of the situation, but a content warning could’ve alleviated some of that backlash - i did see many people talking about getting re-triggered by the abuse because they had no idea what the plot was
I totally agree!! I cut the scene short where ryle forces himself on lily but it's very long and uncomfortable. It should def come with a trigger warning esp if it's marketed as a romance movie

What I appreciated about the movie was that Ryle had red flags even before the abuse. How he wouldn't take no for an answer. I don't remember the scene but when he tells her to shut up. There's lots of little moments of tension that quickly switch back to sweet. There are clues. I didn't read the book, but from what I've heard, that wasn't as clear in the book. He'd just "snap" sometimes but be good the rest of the time.
personally i found that the signs were always there in the book as well. i never liked ryle from the start because of how insistent and obsessive he was (aka not taking no for an answer). man knocked on every apartment door in her building until he found hers so he could beg for sex after she already said no. he has a topless photograph of her that he's blown up and flaunting on the wall at the party too. it's gross and icky. not to mention the anger issues, his opening scene is literally him beating the crap out of a chair. 😭 i think a lot of people just didn't register this as problematic because unfortunately this kind of behaviour is seen as hot in her other books and in a lot of other romance books as well tbh. hell, real life men get away with behaving this way too unfortunately.

I am the first person to judge Colleen Hoover stuff but when Lily kissed Atlas while flipping off the bullies on the bus? She kinda ate. That was real.
One of the best comments i saw about the end of the movie was how completely unrealistic and dangerous it was. People in abusive relationships risk of being killed goes up around the time they try to leave. To literally tell your abuser that you’re leaving is so dangerous. As someone who has not been in an abusive relationship, that was really sobering to read.

When I read the book, I didn't view the childhood shooting incident as the thing that made him into an abuser. I saw it as just another time he was an abuser. Notice no one is around to say whether the brothers were arguing or whether Ryle got hurt by his brother and he lashed out. Just another reason not to have him anywhere near her or the baby.

You should definitely watch Midnight Mass next!!!! There's also a really good video essay on it on youtube that explains all the historical and theological references in detail that Mike Flanagan actually watched and gave the seal of his approval by @upinurbiz, called The Art of Religious Interpretation (midnight mass vs god's not dead). Biz did a great job and I highly recommend her video essay after finishing Midnight Mass

The least unrealistic part of this was that Ryle left her alone after what he did. In my experience, the man will act apologetic at first but as you refuse to reply turn back to violent anger and show up at your place of work or your new home (unsolicited).
