    Pearl Gourami - Trichopodus leerii
aka mosaic gourami, lace gourami, diamond gourami, leeri gourami
    Origins
*Southeast Asia, Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra
*they’ve also been found in northern South America on occasion as well (although this is due to human intervention and not a natural migration)
    Characteristics
    *elongated body
    *generally easy to care for
*ventral fins are long and thin
    *they have long feelers
    *mouth is small and upturned
*pearl and brown flecks covering the body
*horizontal black line runs from the mouth to the tail, ends on a spot
*orange colouring on the ventral head, brighter at breeding time to attract mate
*like other gouramis, these fish have a labyrinth organ which they use to breathe. It functions pretty much like a lung, which means they need to visit the surface periodically in order to get air
    *max length of 4.5 inches
*life span 4-5 years, sometimes more with optimum care
    *peaceful
*hang out in the top half of the water column, Keep this in mind if you plan on adding floating plants to your aquarium. You don’t want to block their path to oxygen!
    Aquarium
*prefer acidic water in lowland swamps near the sea, adaptable to others
*they have been known to find their way out to more stagnant tributaries, low rivers, and lakes from time to time.
*heavy vegetation, floating plants, subdued lighting, dark substrate
*min 20 gallons for one, 36-55 gallons for a couple
    *pH 5.5-7.5
    *Hardness 2-30 dGH
    *temperature 77-82F (25-28C)
    Tank Mates
*peaceful fish, do well in community tank, avoid keeping them with aggressive tank mates, the males become aggressive to others of the same species (and other gouramis)
*do well with small schooling fish
*a good grouping includes 1 male and several females
*Dwarf Gourami, Cory catfish, Kuhli loaches, Danios, Cherry Barbs, Bristlenose Pleco, Neon Tetras
    Diet
    *omnivore
*in their natural habitat, these fish will snack on a lot of insects and other protein-rich food sources like eggs and algae
*flakes, freeze dried foods, frozen foods, pellets, bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, glass worms
*varied diet is good, occasional fresh veggies, lettuce, cooked peas, spinach
    Gender
*males are thinner, more angular bodies, longer fins, sport of a red breast, generally more colourful than females
*males are easily distinguishable by their deep red-orange colouration on the throat/breast
*dorsal fin is longer and more pointed in males
*when ready to spawn, female will have a plumper body
    Breeding
*bubble nest builder, simple to breed
*feed the breeding pair live or frozen brine shrimp to condition breeding
    *provide plenty of floating plants
    *raise temperature to 80F
*reduce water depth in breeding tank to about 6 inches (this is so the fry will have easy access to the surface air to promote normal development of the labyrinth organ)
*begins by male building a bubble nest of up to 10 inches in diameter amid floating plants
*spawning will take place beneath it
*after nest is complete, male will begin to display it to female
*several more spawnings occur and between 200-300 eggs may be produced
*the male then tends to the nest until the eggs hatch, usually in around 20-30 hours
*The fry become free swimming in another 4-5 days, at which point the male should also be removed
