      Years ago I worked with a man named Gustav David Lange. He told me he made a business trip to Isreal and while checking in with Isreali authorities they pulled out a large ledger book and began looking for anyone named Gustav Lange who was wanted as a Nazi criminal.
      Well Dave (he went by Dave) was American-born and had the papers to prove it so he had no problems but he said it was a good indication that the Israeli's NEVER stopped looking.

    As a child in the early 1960's, I remember my father being quite excited at reports that Martin Bormann had been tracked down in South America if I remember correctly.
    I understand that Martin Bormann had a hand in getting large German industrial companies to invest abroad, safeguarding vast amounts of capital which were then repatriated after the end of WW2. It is thought some of these sums went to fund the Franco German Coal & Iron association, forerunner of the 'Common Market', EEC, EU.

    Several years ago, I met someone who was one of the first Americans into Berlin following the Russian liberation. He had possibly been with the U.S group as discussed in one of Dr Felton’s earlier videos. This former soldier, spoke fluent Russian and had a camera with him. The album he showed me contained incredible photos taken just after liberation and included scenes in and around the Chancellery. One of the photos that I recall (though it’s been many years), was of a row of small and in some cases, unusual-looking aircraft, covered with a large camo net, parked on one of the major boulevards. I was told by the photographer (then in his 90's), that these were nazi escape aircraft and now I’m guessing that the photo was taken at the Tiergarten. The planes in the photo looked undamaged under the huge net (which was surprising). I’m wondering if Dr. Felton or anyone else has seen similar images of these apparent escape aircraft readied for takeoff in the heart of Berlin? (I'm not saying M. Bormann was on any of them!)

    When I was stationed in the Philippines in 1978 I took a guided tour into the mountains of northern Luzon. At a remote mountain top hostel, there was an eclectic group of international travelers. As we sat around in the evening, we were swapping stories about unusual places visited and travel adventures. One traveler was a European supertanker captain on holiday. He told a story of being in a small, out of the way village in Bavaria about 10 years earlier on a walking vacation across the lower Alps region. He was having a drink and dinner in a small Kneipe (German for Pub) full of locals. When a stout elderly German man came in without a word, the dynamic of the room changed radically from a boisterous and noise pub. The room full of locals went absolutely silent, and the level of fear and tension was palatable. This man was served a light traditional dinner and drinks, then left without saying a word to anyone, or evening putting down money for the meal. Once he left, the buzz of normal conversation resumed. The captain was sitting facing to the elderly man and could observe him closely. When he later asked the Kneipe owner who the man was, the man refused to say anything about whom the man was. He passed it off as a local eccentric, and he didn't think much about it until by chance he saw a magazine article a few months later about fugitive Nazis and was struck by how the picture of Bormann resembled the elderly German man, especially his eyes, he had seen in that Kneipe. He said that he was aware that Bormann's remains had been positively identified a few years earlier, and he had been officially declared dead. His comment to us was that the fear in the room along with how closely the guy resembled Bormann convinced him that the man really was Bormann. The wondered if the postwar "Odessa" stories about shadowy Nazi influence in the West German government had falsified his "death" to allow him to live in this remote village without question might have credence. I can't vouch for this captain's story because it was a one evening encounter of strangers in a remote location. I was struck at the time at how matter of fact he was personally, and the way he told the story stuck to me as very factual.

    Although this isn’t a story that is new to me, the way it’s worded is what makes it so great you want to listen to it again. Infiltrating the Soviet lines on foot ‘was not an enticing prospect for middle-aged, out-of-shape leaders like Bormann to contemplate’ - this paints such a fine image that it works better than if it’d be filmed live in 4K.

    It's worth pointing out that while Bormann and Himmler cooperated closely on the Holocaust, they were actually bitter enemies. Bormann joined the SS in January 1937, eventually rising to the rank Obergruppenfuhrer, making him technically Himmler's subordinate. In practice he enjoyed Hitler's full confidence, and actually to great pleasure in dictating orders to Himmler, often in a petulant manner.

    • @xander9564
      @xander9564 2 роки тому +1

      Technically, Bormann was Himmler's subordinate ONLY in the SS. If Bormann's SS membership was his only function, that would be that.
      But, as we know, he was also a Reichsleiter, minister without portfolio, and of course Hitler's secretary.

    Mohnke is a character that always held my intrigue. I'm not sure if it's the way he was portrayed in "Downfall", or the fact that after release from the Soviet prison, he settled down into a normal life for 50 more years. If anyone has any good info sources on him, definitely send them.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706

      I was about to comment a similar thing. There is always something charming about men who fight for a lost cause. In ''Downfall'' he is portrayed as a modern knight. Very determined, with great sense of duty and care for his comrades. It would be great if a book ever came out or an interview from a family member, revealing more things about him.

    My Opa was in the Luftwaffe and I would go with him to summer reunions of his friends and others. I got to know Otto Gunche, one of Hitlers valet/bodyguard. He was riveting with the stories he told us about those last days and some really funny stories as well. With regard to the breakout from the bunker, it was well organized by Mohnke and would have worked if they had a better assessment of where the Russians were. Unfortunately, they did not and most of them were captured, including my Opa who served 7 years in a Russian prison camp.

      Matt, Gunsche was, indeed, his adjutant. I urge you to rack your brains and record those stories for posterity. They would be invaluable as Gunsche was the one survivor from the bunker who refused to leave an autobiography as he refused to cash in on his memories of Hitler, (unlike the others - Misch, Linge, Kempka, von Below, Junge etc). He may have revealed something, in those private events, that would create great fascination today.

    I wouldn't be surprised if Borman got 'fragged' by the soldiers in his group. He doesn't appear to have been a very popular man. The kind of toad that everyone dislikes, but who they have to tolerate and even kiss up to because this Nazi version of Grima Wormtongue has the ear of the King. Which is why I find it highly unlikely that he made it out of Berlin and into Latin-America. He had too many enemies and his power rested solely with Hitler. Without Hitler he had nothing of worth or value to the Nazi exile community, other then them bickering over who got the privilege of killing him first.
