This makes me so sad. F1 could really use more teams and although Caterham didn't really add something in the way of driver development as they used mostly old drivers its still a shame. In that way losing Manor is a bigger shame. Hopefully the Budget Cap incentivizes new teams to the grid

Oh I used to live cose to a couple abandoned factories and I did some exploring with friends a few times when I was a bit younger and boi oh boi was it depressing. The most recent one was in about the same state as the Caterham one, except for maybe a couple old computers and a bit of now-useless IT-Equipment. Two production machines also remained there until they were sold of for scrap metal and now there will be an appartment complex, much to the dismay of the locals as it doesn't fit at all into local architecture. Another one was an old chemical factory and I believe the longest abandoned, but boi they left in quite the hurry. Cut up there acid tanks to verify that they were indeed empty but leaving probably several thousand euros worth of equipment, including a forklift, cranes and dozens, if not hundreds of barrels full of good knows what. Some idiot punctured several of them and whatever was inside hardened out to some sort of plasticy substance. They apparantly also were used to get rid of unwanted cars, because an old van and several cars had found there semifinal rest there, all in various states of „disassembly“. The owner was forced to tear the place down after the fire brigade had to investigate the place multiple times after people lit afforementioned cars on fire. However by far the most interesting was and still is owned (and used again as there headquarters) the old Brandt factory a large zweiback / rusk manufacturer from Germany with iconic branding. They left the place somewhere in the 90s and when I was there in ~2017/18 there still stood machines used for kneading the dough, you could tell where they held live chicken to satisfy factory egg demand, conveyor belts were mostly still in place it was fascinating. The family couldn't tear the place down as it was put down as a mark of culture so they started rebuilding it. With the factory spanning over a street (with two iconic bridges in the middle) they first restored one side and I believe are in the process of getting the other side up to code and trying to find people to rent it out to. So who knows, maybe someone will by the Caterham factory and set up their own little racing team.

I think it shows how much more expensive it is to start a team now considering that it was the Arrows HQ, then Super Aguri and finally Lotus/Caterham but no one else wanted to take it on.
I walk past here on dog walks and it always blows my mind how such a big area with so many buildings has gone to waste. There must be some contractual reason that they have to wait out before knocking it down or selling the land. It was formerly the Arrows factory in the early 2000s so was used for some time.
