    Wow. I’m a Edelman fan already but this video is a revelation. Best teacher I have ever seen on UA-cam period. If you ever come to Connecticut I’m grabbing a front row seat. I’ll wait in line way before the doors open if necessary. This presentation was absolutely phenomenal.

    Excellent video Joe. I love the fact that many of your videos are scripted so we get the 'all killer, no filler' stuff, but great to see that when you are 'live' you are just as engaging. Your expertise, knowledge and sheer passion for photography (dare I say, even after all these years!) are clear for all to see. Truly the most helpful UA-cam photography channel in my humble opinion, and glad to be a patron. Cheers from England.

You were both entertaining and informative and held their attention the entire time. I've been asked to do a presentation for our photography group and I feel so much more confident after watching a Jedi Master. Great work. TY

    Joe -- absolutely amazing information, just like the rest of your channel. I love your style of living on manual, one actually learns photography and to understand light and the equipment in that way. I studied optics at the graduate level and so I understand the physics of ISO, aperture, and focal length, lens distortion, etc. at an exceedingly deep level; however, there are so many channels out there that use "automagic" TTL lighting techniques, that when I finally decided to take a stab at portrait photography which requires keylighting and fills, I nearly gave up thinking that not having such technology would yield poor results. You proved again in my mind that technique, a deep understanding of one's equipment, and experience can invalidate the need for brittle automated solutions if one is approaching photography for the art form that it is. Thank you again.

    Great video Joe! Watching this video, I just realized that I am so excited for the opportunity to photograph someone, that I am not doing a good job of communicating. When asked if I will photograph someone, I say, 'yes'. I will create much better images when I start asking the right questions. I have had a few sessions where I should have said 'no,' as well. I have had some models show up in some seriously bad outfits, which could have been avoided by better communication on my part.

    I think your channel is one of the best around. And the passion and the effort you put into your work let this 90 minutes flow like they were just five. I like your style: your are very direct and honest. I have a question if I may and I am pretty much confused.
    I am not a photographer, but I want to start taking headshots as hobby. I have a Canon 80d (crop) and two lenses: 50mm 1.8 and 30mm 1.4.
    In a previous video you said that your favourite lens now is the Tokina macro 100mm (on Canon it will be a 160mm cropped) I was looking to a versatile and sharp lens that will allow me to shoot indoor and outdoor blurring the background.
    I was thinking at the "classic" 70-200 2.8 if possible stabilized, and looking into the used market. In your opinion are the Sigma (the cheapest) or Tamron valuable option or should I consider to save a bit more money for the canon? or I should stick with primes?
    Thank you in advance for your courtesy.
    Andrea

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  8 років тому +4

      Thank you for the kind words pirate9882 ! Before I answer your question, let me just say - AWESOME Demo Reel! Congratulations! When are you moving to Hollywood? The choice between zooms and primes is really a personal one - don't let anyone tell you one is better than the other. With primes, you potentially need more lenses - but the lenses are less expensive and often faster. Give the two lenses you have the 70-200 will give you a lot of range in a 3 lens kit and you may find the the 100mm (effective length - 160mm) will be a bit long for portraits. I have not personally used the Sigma or the Tamron, but I have read wonderful things about the quality of the Tamron 70-200mm lens and while Sigma lenses aren't bad - I do tend to favor the Tamron for design and build.

    • @pirate9882
      @pirate9882 8 років тому +2

      Joe Edelman Thank you so much for having seen my demo reel and enjoy it! Actually with my immigration lawyer I am finalizing the petition for the 01 Visa that will allow me to established in LA and give myself a little chanche to test if I could be a good fit for the American market.
      Thanks also for your quick reply, as I said before I want to "shoot people" as hobby to better understand human beings and myself too, and of course improve the video quality of a probable self tape audition and test myself as "actor-director".
      Now that I am approaching shyly photography and lights I understand much more when my acting teacher said that "photography is one of the lead actor in a scene".
      Thank you for your advice concerning lenses, probably I should wait a bit to save some money for a new Tamron or a used Canon then while I'm continue practicing with the lens I have.
      I will follow you also on your Facebook group too (and thanks again for accepting my request).
      Your channel really rocks!

    Joe are you able to elaborate on your comments regarding high speed sync? Are you referring mostly to studio work? My partner and I are about to invest in some lighting for daylight shooting in bright, harsh South Australian sun, and was thinking of monolights (600ws) with high speed sync. Am I better going with a two or three speedlight key light setup? - I fear this won't give me enough juice.

    Two great points you made. The first being that it is important to have the subject seem alive in the shots. All the discussion on the internet about lighting ratios, modifiers, the inverse square law or any other technical aspects mean nothing if the subject looks tense or bored. It seems a lot of that common sense was lost in the internet/digital photography age because, rather than learning how to make people look good, tech geeks got into the hobby to brag about their gear. They're far happier with "technical perfection" than the art/emotion aspect. That's all fine and good if you're taking macro photos of bugs, plants, circuit boards or autopsy's but not so great for living people.
    Second, your comments about the "lighting kit" question. The only lighting in my tiny studio is usually an LED continuous octabox and natural light that I control with curtains over the 10 feet of south facing windows. I may add in a cheap spotlight from time to time, with or without color gels, behind the subject to light the background. Anything else is done with reflectors. The octa cost less than one of my speedlights. Knowing how to use my speedlights I've done quick portraits, on location, using bounce or occasionally popping an FStoppers flash disk on just one. No portable monolites or bulky c-stands, just knowing the limits of the equipment and how light works.
    By the way, I'm stealing your "don't piss me off or I'll make it 30" line. I truly did laugh out loud when you said it, but it is a great way get get the client to understand small adjustments.

      Actually drobdelayed, you just did it for me. Seriously. The fact that you can't outline a compelling reason why you need HSS is exactly why you don't need it. Don't buy gear because everybody says you should - buy it because it is going to help yo solve a problem.

    • @drobdelayed
      @drobdelayed 8 років тому +1

      Joe Edelman Thanks so much for the reply. My little understanding of hss is that its mainly for shooting outside in daylight when you want to shoot wide open on the subject and not blow out the background. This seemed to make sense to me but is there a better or cheaper way to do this?

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  8 років тому

      For what you just described drobdelayed, a neutral density filter or polarizer will accomplish the same thing AND will also give you additional benefits as filters. Not to mention that MOST people SUCK at shooting wide open and CONSISTENTLY keeping things in focus - sodo be careful with the shooting wide open and take the time to actually learn how to control depth of field - then you will realize there is more than one way to get nice bokeh in the background.

    Wow this was really great. You should do that kind of videos more often. And it would be even greater if you could do a video about how you can imitate a beauty dish light with an shoot trough umbrella like you mentioned in the video. Because I'm not sure if I get this right? You can do that by putting it close to the subject? I would say that you have to put it far from your subject so the source of the light is relatively smaller.

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  8 років тому

      Thank youJarek 'Wasyl' Wasilewski, I am glad you enjoyed it. No - "close" is the answer. By keeping it real close, you can use the inverse square law to get the light to fall off and create a similar effect to what you would get from a beauty dish. Stay tuned - I will demo it at some point.

    Very educational video and I have subscribed.
    Can I start small weddings with Nikon D3200 with 85mm f1.8g, Nikon 17-55mm f2.8, Nikon 40mm 2.8 micro and Nikon 55-200 f4.5.
    I also have the interfit S1 monolight flash.
    Might get the D500 early next year.

      Thank you shadyninja1! Glad to have you as a subscriber. Regarding weddings, the camera doesn't make you a wedding photographer - your skills make you a wedding photographer. I will BEG you... do NOT be the photographer who agrees to photograph someones wedding with only one camera body. A wedding is the most important day of that couples life - what will you do if your only camera fails? At least rent a second camera body for the wedding if you don't already own one.

      Joe Edelman thanks for the reply Mr Joe.
      I will get another better camera before starting.
      I do take good pictures and my skills have improved over the last two years but I keep getting condemnations from people who just keep advising to go full frame/FX.
      I looked on the internet and have seen fantastic pictures taken with my d3200 and the same lens as mine.
      May God bless you.

    Hi Joe, just catching up with some of your vids since joining the FB Group. Both you and another well-known headshot photographer speak about models 'best sides' being, more often than not, their left side. My limited experience so far tends to confirm that, just based on what I tend to prefer if I do two different views. However, you've also mentioned that due to social media profile images being in the top left corner, the model should be facing to their left, therefore showing their right-side. How do get around that?

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  5 років тому

      I said that it is a common belief. In fact what I taught in that lecture is that the smaller eye is the best side. Regarding social media, as I explained in the talk, the person doesn't have to face directly to their left. You can cheat with a slight turn or head tilt.

    • @letsbefrank3

      @@theJoeEdelman OK, thanks. I'll try the 'smaller eye' method with less of a turn

    Joe! I loved this! Thank you for sharing this session, helps a lot and it is very inspiring to someone like me who isn't that confident with using speedlights. What program are you using on your laptop for this "live" preview? Thanks!

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  8 років тому

      Glad you enjoyed it Frederick Taylor! I appreciate the kind words! The software is Capture One Pro. I use it when shooting tethered and also as a RAW processor. It is much more powerful than the Adobe Camera Raw - but be forewarned - it is pricey and has a steep learning curve. You can also shoot tethered with Lightroom - it's just not as fast.

    Quick question Joe, I have been using natural light to shoot portraits for some time now and I have recently invested in flashpoint explorer 600. In this video you say that the Apature you use is F5-5.6. I get the impression that based on the shutter speed you use that the Apature is the variable. Is that true or can I shoot more open, say with f2.8? Is so what would the shutter speed be? Another thing will I "have' to invest in a light meter? Help please! 😊

    Dear Joe, I don't want to pay for HSS either , but how do you think, which is the best way to overpower the sun (using a wide aperture lens and speedlight/battery powered strobe light) , except using ND Filters , because it makes the focusing much more difficult?

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  7 років тому

      There are several ways to do it Андрей Куклешкин and it really depends on the exact shooting conditions. Myself - for the few times a year that I do it - I would rather use the ND filters - I don't really have a problem focusing with them.

    Joe, i see this commonality in almost every videos there. Do you think that the art of photography is coming to its deaths door due to the movement of phone photography? I know im being vague, I myself is 30 and I find that most attendees to every conference i see on you tube consists of the older generations. I have been very blessed to know lighting to take my artistry to another level. Any comments on how to educate the newer generations properly? I come from Indonesia and there is a language barrier that must be overcome.
