    Budget Electric Skateboard Parts List: geni.us/5c9BpBu
    As promised, here is the video all about my DIY Electric Skateboard / Longboard. To me, it's better than a boosted board with a range of 10 miles and a top speed of 25mph. The board is built with parts from Torque Boards, Enertion Boards, Random Amazon Parts, and Hobby King.
    It has it's faults but I still love it.

      Shyro Channing cost about $600.
      In this build there is no power switch. You plug in the battery to the vesc to power it on.
      It accelerates and decelerates with the controller.

    I've been all over the internet, looking at prebuilt, diy, and tons of other electric skateboards. This one seems to be the best bang for my buck. The charge times and inconvenience of the batteries are totally worth the speed, range, and price. I'm amazed you were able to do this with little/no skateboard building experience before..
    Well done.

    Hey man, I absolutely love your board. I love the idea of building one myself, but I also have no past experience. I'm sure thousands of people would love to see a general overview of your board, to see where/how you placed things. Not necessarily a full blown tutorial, but a detailed review would be extremely appreciated.

    Great job man. I'm in a similar situation to you- built a board over the summer for college with lipos and Carvon hubs. Top speed: 32mph; range: 10-12 miles. Best investment I've ever made

      What's your specs?

    • @kleiberfan9509
      @kleiberfan9509 7 років тому +6

      2 13000mah 3s lipos in series, 2 6s car escs (solid braking and very reliable), GT2B hobby controller, 90mm wheels. The dual Carvon hubs are total tanks- I ride them in the pouring rain and rough pavement here in the UK (uni) and nothing stops them. I'm hitting 50kph on 6s- If I were to upgrade to vescs and 12s, I could easily cross 80kph. Making a project like this is totally doable- I purchased most of my parts off eBay, and got the Carvons used on www.electric-skateboard.builders. It's great to see people like Mike getting the word out on how to make these things!

    • @astread7533
      @astread7533 7 років тому +1

      KleiberFan hey man could you link me to those 13000mah batteries and the ESC too ?

    • @kleiberfan9509
      @kleiberfan9509 7 років тому +2

      Sure thing!
      Esc (120a 6s):
      www.ebay.com/itm/FVT-120A-Brushless-Sensored-Sensorless-RC-Car-ESC-2-6S-1-10-USA-SHIP-120-AMP-/172389544841?hash=item282337b389:g:sZMAAOSwx2dYEmjn
      Very reliable and robust- just make sure you keep them cool with venting or exterior mounts. The only issue I've had with my board was in the first week when the escs overheated (when they overheat, the failsafe kicks in and applies full brake- not fun when you're on the board). The failsafe can be disabled with a firmware update, but just ensure there's adequate airflow and you'll be fine.
      Batteries: I can't seem to find my exact batteries on the eBay site anymore, but they're this brand (just choose your mah):
      www.ebay.com/itm/2x-FLOUREON-20C-11-1V-5500mAh-3S1P-Lipo-RC-Battery-Deans-Plug-for-Car-Truck-Boat-/272608800990?hash=item3f78c030de:g:jOEAAOSwuLZY2kd2
      These are cheap and last a while with proper care
      Make sure you check out the builders forum- there are thousands of posts from people building and selling e-boards, and many great tips to be gathered!
      Good luck!

    • @MikeBeard
      @MikeBeard  7 років тому +4

      +Grant Becker In total it was about $650 but you can make one for much cheaper if you select cheaper parts. The large 83mm wheels handle the edges of sidewalks like a pro. And the bottom has plenty of clearance. Just have to watch out for some speed humps in parking lots sometimes 👍🏻

    Great board I built one that has a top speed of 45mph, but I've limited that using my vesc because it's a bit too fast, I like how you say it's better than a boosted, but it's hard to compare a diy with a boosted because a diy will always beat a boosted in speed and range, but the build quality of a boosted is stunning and it comes with an app and the startup is very smooth

    • @MikeBeard
      @MikeBeard  7 років тому +2

      Yup, just depends what you value in a board. If it's about range and speed then DIY for sure, if it's about convenience and ergonomics then Boosted Board all the way.

      Isaiah Schlegel I actually only bought one motor, the turnigy sk3 245kv, its great for budget boards yet it's got an enormous amount of power, using this motor with an untamed esc is like a boosted board on steroids, it will throw you of fairly easily, it hasn't been hot yet I've ridden up and down hills at high speeds and it's only been warm, the only damage on the motor is a few scratches from rocks I really recommend it to any diy skateboard builder

    hey man, could you talk to me about board flex?
    is it better for a boosted board for it to be able to flex more or be stiffer?
    if it's more flexible, I believe it will be more comfortable to ride for a long distance, but couldn't the flex of the board mess up/bend the connections and components screwed to the botttom?
    also, would speed bumps be a problem, since by going over them we may hit the components to the ground and damage them?
    thanks in advance!

    • @MikeBeard
      @MikeBeard  6 років тому +1

      The stiffness or the flexibility of a board is completely up to the rider. I wouldn’t say one is Better than the other. I personally like a stiffer board because it seems more steady at higher speeds. But the flexible boards take the vibrations from the road down. So it’s just personal preference.
      Speed bumps can be a problem depending on how large the speed bump is and how much clearance you have.

    hey Mike, great project! I just started building one... will send you pics soon :) I have a question for you about the batteries: have you tested 6S/7S/8S setups? looks like your 9S works just fine. For the boosted board they use 12S. I’m wondering how low can you go while keeping good acceleration/speed (it would half the weight and costs of batteries and ESC)

    • @MikeBeard
      @MikeBeard  6 років тому

      +Matteo Castrofino I’ve seen some good set ups with 6s. But I would recommend 10s. All around good speed and acceleration. And would love to see photos 😎

    • @MikeBeard

      +ThePixelShark Depends what parts you end up getting. You can end up buying parts and not have to really use any tools. For mine, I had to solder on a few connectors to my VESC, and modify my trucks a tad bit because the motor mount didn't fit 100%. Nothing crazy though. 😊

    Super interesting topic sir, this is something that has intrigued me for some time I'd love a boosted board but I'm not interested in paying 2k for the real deal. I have been in to r/c's all my life and have recently gotten into a bit of fpv race drones not much but a bit... I was curious to know what size of motors you are using and if you'd ever thought of using the esc and reciever set up from an r/c like an e revo or something?

      Yeah for a parallel charging board usually their max 6 packs. You can charge 6 packs of the same voltage together. Just get one that fits your end connector. It will still take the same amount of time to charge though unless you have a better charger but it's less work than charging separately. hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbyking-parallel-charging-board-for-6-packs-2-6s-xt-60.html?___store=en_us

    As somebody know doesn't know a lot about the parts that go into making an electric skateboard, as in the motors, etc., I'm curious, if you were willing to make cuts into the top speed and distance traveled how low do you think you could get the price of the board before it because almost useless due to slow speeds, short ride times, etc.

    • @MikeBeard
      @MikeBeard  7 років тому +1

      +Nicholas Catalanotto Well making cuts in price won't effect the top speed and range too much. What happens is you will end up buying worse quality parts and they will end up burning out or breaking faster.
      For example, I have 3 batteries in series. If I take out 1, my top speed will got from like 27mph to about 18mph. And that will only save you a $25 battery, but greatly sacrifices the top speed
