It’s ok! This song is very powerful! A lot know your struggles, me included. There was a time in my life I didn’t think I could live without alcohol. Oct 8 2024 will be 8 years sober fr alcohol! Knowledge and understanding are key
I lived in Round Rock Tx. I loved it. Signed, a Native American from Minnesota. I miss the South and all the wonderful, loving people. Thanx, Ya' All. I was carrying out groceries for a company called H.E.B. I carried the groceries for these small elderly lady, she said, "You are so kind and polite, where are you from?" I said, "Thank You, Minnesota." The lovely lady said, "Ya' damn Yankee." I said, " Yes Ma'am." and left it at that. Love Austin. m
I’m always talking about Merle, George Jones, Hank Jr and Sr, King George Strait as the greatest country voices and I forget Dwight but this dude should not be forgotten and he belongs in the Pantheon of the greatest country vocalists of all time.
This song used to make me cry. The fact that people can just walk on by and not care, is a reality that is beyond me. Where is the milk of human kindness, and the measure of human decency?
This goes out to my friend Stanley who always played every Dwight Yoakum song on the jukebox 58 is just to young to die. So we'll sing Dixie one last time tonight.
1oldgoat So very sorry for your loss. I thought I was gonna listen to this song for myself, but Stanley, I'm listening to this song for YOU. RIP Stanley. Wish I could've known you. The world was a better place with you in it, sir. 💔
I'm sorry for your heartache. Losing a love, any love, can happen so quickly. Always tell someone you love them. It might be your last chance. God bless you.
My dad died unexpectedly in my arms at the age of 63. I wish I could sing this song as I have a fairly descent singing voice but I can’t make it through the first stanza without losing my voice and having to purse my lips...it hits home.
So did bro 2019 i held dad as he died ...the irony check this channel in my name i got live recording of Dad singing Guitars and Cadillacs, 😇 rip dad his older brother died 3 days ago so im in my feels right now
Everyone comments that this song is about alcoholism but I think the song is more of a reflection of how the lifestyle that a sick place like LA that just chews people up and spits them out does to people, that kind of city, that kind of life, that a person who was living the slow real life of “Dixie” wouldn’t be drinking themselves to death on a street. LA is the cruel world , the darkness of that shallow existence isn’t good for the soul. Dixie is real, is the light in the world, the beauty, the down to earth heart, the thing people wish they could run back to even when it’s too late because they realize what matters in life at the end.
I sang Dixie As he died People just walked on by As I cried The bottle had robbed him Of all his Rebel pride So I sang Dixie As he died Said way down yonder In the land of cotton Old times there Ain't near as rotten As they are On this damned old L.A. street Then he drew a dying breath Laid his head 'gainst my chest Please Lord, take his soul Back home to Dixie And I sang Dixie As he died People just walked on by As I cried The bottle had robbed him Of all his Rebel pride So I sang Dixie As he died He said "Listen to me son while you still can" "Run back home to that Southern land!" "Don't you see what life here has done to me?" Then he closed those old blue eyes Fell limp against my side No more pain Now he's safe back home in Dixie And I sang Dixie As he died People just walked on by As I cried The bottle had robbed him Of all his Rebel pride So I sang Dixie As he died I sang Dixie As he died
TOTALLY LOVE THIS SONG- however while it is tremendous when Dwight sings it solo, there is something special when you hear the fiddle accompanying this great song.
Mom named me after the south. I was in a college history class and the professor told the whole class Dixie means rebel as he stood by my desk. I said, "I'm an angel" with a bit of anger in my voice.
It's a beautiful name. College profs say a lot of dumb things. He's just being mean and showcasing his ignorance. Don't let anyone make you ashamed of your name. Be proud of it and let them know it.
As I told my southern daughters I raised you to be verbally bullet proof to lies an verbal assaults . Just words , they can't hurt you an remember be proud of your up bringing .
I'm from right down the road from Betsy Lane, Kentucky where so.many folks in country come.from down on highway 23. It's also brought meth and death to a place that pretty difficult to live in. We are still a proud people and all fight to the death for God, Family and Country.
I really enjoy Dwight and being a true southern, I Sang Dixie, is one of my favorite. I have a great deal of respect for Dwight and his friendship with Buck Owens. Hearing him sing at Buck's funeral waso touching. In spite of the age difference, they were the best of friends, rare these days. Dwight even admitted he loved Buck Owens. I am sure it went the other way too! Cheryl

Just Dwight and his guitar…..beautifully perfect. Thank you DY.

I shoveled the dirt on the old man's casket a little over a year ago. One of the last country boys!!! God bless the U.S.A and rural America 🇺🇸!!!

Beautifully spoken!
From an Alabamian
People don't realize how perfect his voice is. No gimmicks, back up vocals, back up tracks.
Exactly the best entertainer I ever seen or heard
I seen dewite live 3 times the man was nothing less than pure talent and far underated as a pure country singer !!!
Salute to those brave soldiers who fought for the South.
STARS & BARS forever
I sang Dixie
As he died
People just walked on by
As I cried
The bottle had robbed him
Of all his Rebel pride
So I sang Dixie
As he died
Said way down yonder
In the land of cotton
Old times there
Ain't near as rotten
As they are
On this damned old L.A. street
Then he drew a dying breath
Laid his head 'gainst my chest
Please Lord, take his soul
Back home to Dixie
And I sang Dixie
As he died
People just walked on by
As I cried
The bottle had robbed him
Of all his Rebel pride
So I sang Dixie
As he died
He said
"Listen to me son while you still can"
"Run back home to that Southern land!"
"Don't you see what life here has done to me?"
Then he closed those old blue eyes
Fell limp against my side
No more pain
Now he's safe back home in Dixie
And I sang Dixie
As he died
People just walked on by
As I cried
The bottle had robbed him
Of all his Rebel pride
So I sang Dixie
As he died
I sang Dixie
As he died
TOTALLY LOVE THIS SONG- however while it is tremendous when Dwight sings it solo, there is something special when you hear the fiddle accompanying this great song.
Such a melodic voice that can go up and down the range easily.

This song always brings a tear to my eyes. I've had the bottle rob me of my pride. King Alcohol!
Give it to God man. He took it away from me and I was a heavy drinker. It’s a wonder I’m still alive, but thanks to Him.
