We did the same thing you lose about 5 or 6 inches under the plastic. Each year replacing the plastics can get expensive. One year we switched and stoped the plastic. In stead we planted winter Rye on top of the silage and two things happened First we lost a little more some spots we lost 10 in. The second that happened we sent 75% less money. Buy a 50 lb. bag and experiment with a 3 foot section see what you think.

Hmmm honest question from a non farmer in cali, why does the grain get "buried in a pit" ? Interesting to know where and how my food is processed so thanks for sharing that
Sure! When it gets covered like this, it ensiles it (ferments it) and lets it keep longer. It's great, high nutrition feed for cattle, especially dairy cows.
It’s chopped corn that is packed in a pit and “ensiles” ie ferments and makes good cattle feed. A lot of dairies use it. This wedding was only 30 minutes away and I worked there 8 hours.
