This turned out lovely. I can't imagine why someone would ever give a thumbs down. Thank you Whitney. This vinyl bag was exactly what I was looking for to incorporate into my bag design.
THANK YOU for this great tutorial. You nailed it and made it so easy to follow. Have made two so far and plan to make 2 dozen more for gifts for my quilting friends. I did quilt the back adding batting, and made them 12" square so layer cake can fit inside, too. You're a great teacher, even when you're not feeling well!
Nice video. I have sewn for many years so I can honestly say that your directions are concise and clear. And nice links to things like sewing on the binding for those unfamiliar with the process. Also for sewing on vinyl, my preference would be to use a foot with rollers on it--no sticking. An alternative might be to make a strip of paper like tissue paper and put that between the presser foot and the vinyl; that way you can use any presser foot that suits you.
Your videos are so clear and include the important information without lots of extra chatter! I am excited to give this a try as my first vinyl project!
Whitney Sews what gauge/type of vinyl do you use? It looks like there are lots of options, and I can’t get to a store to have a look at them. Is there a source on Etsy or Amazon? I am going to make your zippered tote for my daughter in law, and it would be cool to make one of the vinyl pouches for her out of the same material.
I'm honestly not sure what gauge mine is. It was a remnant that I found at Joanns several years ago. If I had to guess it's probably somewhere in the middle of the thicknesses, not as thick as a clear table covering but not so thin it could be torn easily. Sorry I don't have more info on that. Is the zipper tote you're making the one with the PDF? If so did you get it downloaded by clicking the purple button after purchase? If not send me an email and I can get it sent to you.
Whitney Sews Yes, I have purchased your tote pattern and already have it downloaded and printed. I am thinking of using byAnnies soft and stable for my exterior bag interfacing. I will quilt it on.
I love this tutorial. I have made many bags like this one but the instructions were very long and it took a lot of time. This video is quick and straight to the point. I love that! Thanks so much Whitney!
Thank you, Whitney - this bag is definitely on my to-do list! I love your tutorials - they're clear and to the point, and even a beginner like me can follow them. You helped me make my first bag with a box bottom! Thanks for sharing your expertise!
These are really useful and great gifts. The vinyl can be tricky to sew with at first. I like to put tracing paper or just regular paper on top of the vinyl to stop it from slipping and then it's very easy to rip off after you sewn it.
Hi Whitney, Thank you for the great Project Bag Video. When you get your vinyl, it comes with tissue paper to keep the vinyl from sticking to itself. When you cut the vinyl you should have a piece of vinyl and tissue paper the same size. When sewing put the vinyl side up, the tissue paper will be against the plate and glide right through while being sewn. The needle perforates the tissue paper so you can just tear it off later. Hope this makes sense and helps with the vinyl sticking while sewing 🙂
Yes, I know about using the tissue paper. But for some reason I really don't like pulling tissue paper out of stitches at the end. I can do paper piecing with regular paper, but tissue paper weird me out and makes me anxious.
Another fantastic tutorial......I like the ease in which you crafted this bag. Much different from my vinyl bag and will be producing several with this method. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this, the easiest best-explained video for me to try this by far. My top didn't come out straight, vinyl I guess was moving, but I left it. It's okay first try and just for me. I so appreciate you making this tutorial for us. Thanks!!
I just subbed! I❣love❣ a UA-camr who gets straight to the point without taking up time pointing out the obvious (like the fact that we need scissors and fabric to complete this project. LOL 🤪) And your instructions are very well explained.👍🏻 Well done! 👏🏻
After making several window masks I'm going to use the remainder 8g vinyl to make these bags. Do you have a link to the binding-bias tape? What exactly do I buy? Thank you and stay well.
❤️❤️❤️❤️LOVE this tutorial! It was so easy to understand. I’m such a newbie at sewing and I want to make these bags for my cross stitch projects. How would I adjust the measurements to fit a Qsnap 11x11 or 11x17? Thank you!
Hi, Whitney!! I love your videos!! You are detailed and easy to understand! Where do you buy your fabrics? They’re so cute-especially that Mickey Mouse fabric!! Thanks for all you do!!
I made two this evening but made a mess with the binding, I don't seem to have the gift of flawless stitching or perfect mitre corners. Will try again as have just realised you said narrow binding 😬 Thanks again for a lovely project 😊
Hey Whitney, My name is Brian I’m not necessarily talking about the polkadot fabric witch you can get probably at any Joannes I’m talking about where you got the retro vintage Mickey Mouse fabric let me know where you got that Thanks
I am in or of you. You are a great sewer. I wish I could find one easy product to make and finish. In stead I just watch you on UA-cam and never sew😂😂😂😂
He Whitney, my name is Brian if you got the vintage Mickey Mouse fabric at Joannes could you please send me a link Or website or where I can purchase that Mickey Mouse Fabric Let me know I soon as possible
Turning over a 1/4 inch is not always easy for all of us. I saw recently that someone took some cardboard (I used cardstock) and drew lines at 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch from the edge. When ironing, it helped to know the exact width, especially when turning over the 1/4 and the 1/2 inch to make a nice edge.
This turned out lovely. I can't imagine why someone would ever give a thumbs down. Thank you Whitney. This vinyl bag was exactly what I was looking for to incorporate into my bag design.
They put a thumbs down because they’re jealous of her talent.

Thank you for this tutorial. I have wanted to make some vinyl bags, so we can see what is in the bags without having to unzip and look.
