Brake Squeal Explained

- Brake squealing or squeaking is rarely a sign of trouble. Porsche engineers explain why there is a propensity for brake squeal. Though this is typical of high performance brakes, our superior engineering strives to minimize unwanted brake noise.
Combined fuel consumption in accordance with EU 6: 911 Carrera 4S: 8,9-7,9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions: 204-180 g/km
mine bothered me so much, I had my brakes removed entirely.
best of luck to you
Good idea
Haha yeah brakes are for cowards, who needs them anyway
they only slow you down anyway
How did you leave this comment?
Hahaha look at Porsche being passive aggressive
Otherwise it would come out as, "You whiny, effete, pampered customers, we didn't design it wrong; you simply don't understand the underlying physics and engineering."
jeebus2121 hahahaha so true, i died xD
Saying “stupid fucks read up on physics” would have been too short
LOL... "passive aggressive"... not quite.
Which is hilarious because if they simply used better brakes they wouldn't squeal. I wouldn't need an informative video if porsche make cars without squealing brakes.

You got me 😆
This is basically Porsche saying "Stop being bunch of sissies" to the customers and cars are still mechanical and sounds are part of it and dont listen to your Tesla owner friends or neighbors (especially if live in San Francisco)who think this is a problem.
No this is Porsche saying 'deal with it' because we can't fix it.
Not just that..if there was a way Porsche would have already cleared it because ..well they are Porche.!
Lol you trigger the Tesla fan girls 😏
Teslas don't use the brakes as normar cars, they tend to recover the energy while braking with the electric motors, also because there is no ICE the noise insulation is needed to be quite intense because others sounds tend to be more noticeable
The many reasons I left San Fran, Snowflake central
I can sum it up in one sentence: powerful brakes squeal, deal with it.
Sean Xu only really good brakes and really shitty brakes squeal 😂 most just don't understand
Sean Xu But why do I get ear raped by the squeal of bus brakes
O my bad I assumed only buses with shitty brakes squealed, these new double deckers around me are perfectly silent...
Lmao thanks for enlightening me.
This is my 4th 911. my new 2019 is the only one that has had this problem. My friend has the same car and no brake noise. So Porsches answer the brakes are so good they squeal is BS.
Very nice video. But for those with short attention spans, you can go with the simpler explanation: because racecar
Jason Wingate lovely
You can have quiet brakes that suck. Or you can have noisy brakes that perform. Pick one.
Michael Tran I’ll choose no brakes
I Choose the ones that Do have Both !!! ! !!! or if there aren't, than i make ones !!! ! !!! But, ... it lasts a few years of building such ones now :-/ And if it work 4 some time, than i change the pads, and it squeals again . 6 Diferent manufacturers , and they still start 2 squeal at new pads ... :-/
there is no science behind carbon-ceramics being better on streets from non-carbon-ceramics, not at stopping distance
Or or or breaks that work and don’t sound like need new breaks and scare people around u.
How make a quiet brakes with good performance instead?
Thank you for explaining brake squeal. It's one thing I get constantly asked to fix for people, but they are the same people who think that a car enthusiast is a mechanic.
I love all the footage of older Porsche models used in this video, especially that black 991.1 C4S and the beautifully sounding CGT.
"older" haha....
i liked the air cooled classics :) they even did a huge shot of them
I agree, Zac!! The CGT has no equal when it comes to the sound of the exhaust! (although the Lexus LFA is pretty close...)
This was awful with working at BMW. The daddy money kids would drop $90,000 on an M car and they were in every Saturday with a “brake noise issue”. They INSIST on getting the “cool yellow ceramic brakes” but ignored us every time to would reiterate these are not going to be what you want
Happens at work - people complain that their big 'm' breaks sweal all the time service or sick of telling them its just due to size of breaks nothing can be done unless you get smaller breaks.
I'm one of them not daddy money though that shit is annoy not able to have windows down
Jamar Walter brake squeal doesn't mean u can't put ur windows down, they're not connected or anything lmao
Even worse are the parents who get X5 Ms to haul their kids around. WHY.
@@koolteskip Im that parent lol 😂
Not to denigrate your other videos but this is, to me, the best video this channel has ever had.
Yeah, there's something about this video that makes it really special, whether that's the cinematography, voice over or the explanation that's so quintessentially Porsche.
Hands down, the best technical video out by a manufacturer.
I'd grown used to the annoying sound of brake squeak from the large front rotors on my MB C450 AMG, which the MB dealer examined and found to be good. I remember driving a Ferrari 430 Scuderia at Exotics Racing, and hearing the same squeak. Then just the other day, an Audi R8 pulled up beside me, and exhibited the same squeak. After seeing this video, I now consider myself to be proudly driving a car with large (and powerful) front rotors. Thanks, Porsche.
Big performance brakes have been prone to this sort of noise for DECADES now. It's not normally a problem if you use them hard from time to time but too many posers sitting in traffic don't get the concept and get annoyed that their 'expensive personal image enhancement object' makes noise and they can't hear their incoming text messages. ;-) Try three hard stops from 70-80 mph (on a clear road obviously) and see if they don't quiet down for a while. Get some heat into the rotors and clear off some of that pad material you've built up while posing in traffic. Once they cool down spray them down to clean the excess brake dust. In many cases that brake noise is merely a cry for help... your Porsche has become bored with your Buick-like driving traits.
Savage commentary. Salute.
Amen
Or not a poser, they should maybe say as they are selling you a car. Oh every time you use your brakes it will do this. My other 4 911 did not do this. My Ducati does not do this.
@@benweiss7636 High performance brakes squeal when they are not being used as they should, which is hard braking. Period. This is well known since disc brakes' first beginnings in motorsport that goes all the way back to the early 50s. Any buyer capable and presumably enthusiastic enough to buy a Porsche or any other supercar that doesn't get this is straight up ignorant. The 911 user driving with carboceramics doing casual driving while complaining about brake squeal is indeed a poser that will never understand you need to drive and break hard in order to create proper heat so brakes can function properly.
Not only that, Porsche is one of the few manufacturers that doesn't rely on third parties when it comes to braking technology, it's all made in house, which allow them to improve tremendously in relatively short time. Take the brakes from a 997 GT3 and a 991 GT3 and compare. Miles apart. Sorry sir, you are still a poser.
Doesn't work, re-done the full bed-in procedure with 50 stops, it quiet down for like half a day and then back to being 30 yr old night bus at 4am in your neighborhood. They should not sell this as a street car without a fat red disclaimer you get x % chance yours will be the one that squeal, badly.
I like how they spent thousands of dollars making a four minute video just to say "It's normal."
If Porsche's anything like Land Rover (I work at LR dealership), we have a mass amount of customers "complain" that their expensive premium cars should not have brake squeal. And for some stupid reason, we replace them for free under warranty. So spending a few thousand on this video, just so their staff can shove it in the stupid customer's face every time they complain... worth it.
I used to work at an Audi dealer so on all the S or RS floor or near the building models I would write with a window marker
"performance
brakes squeal
we will NOT
replace them
with other brakes"
if any one ame in asking about brakes id point to the windows
When guys come in with their Subaru STI complaining about their Brembo brakes squealing = "it normal". Should of bought a WRX instead. Every manufacturer I'm sure deals with this topic on performance cars - nice job Porsche for putting this together.
This explains why EVERY video of the Aston Martin Vulcan I see it is screaming when people are driving it. This was a much needed video! Really helped me understand :)
Had the sequel at first on my GTS, went away after a hard drive, never came back.
1:15 Very nice resonance frequency test setup with automatic modal hammer and an older laser vibrometer 👍
Using a similiar (newer) setup for acoustic material testing and measuring natural frequency of components in end of line tests.
Thank you for explaining this. I had squeal after a front rotor change on my Boxster GTS.
Porsche not only make great cars but good videos too!!
I love the way it has been explained!! Just amazing! 👌
THANK. YOU.! If only I can show this to customers at the Land Rover dealer I work at. Your high performance Brembo brakes are SUPPOSE to squeal!!
Porsche : brake squeal is unequivocal standard
Steve jobs : you’re using it wrong
Porsche introducing the worlds first high performance squeal.
"You just have to force the squeal as a standard on all platforms, the client will just have to learn to like it"
Agreed......... THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE !
Hey Porsche, here is a amateur photograher and i was just wondering where can i find some really heavy used brake disks. For a long time I had this idear in my mind to take a macro picture of some really heavily used brakes disk. I wand a picture that express the amazing force cause by braking. Wish you all the best!
Any dealer or workshop....?
i tried some time ago, i have to try harder :) thx
Maybe a racing team or dealerships. Dumpster dive behind a ferrari service shop lol
We are Porsche. We make some of purest fastest sports cars in the world. We have a team of highly paid engineers that have been trying for decades to remove break squeal. It's never going to happen.. Well never say never. How about this when we solve it you'll be the first to know. In closing it's your state of mind. The squealing is a feature of high performance. True petrol heads know this and love the sound almost as much as they love the sounds of our engine . Drive this for a few more years and you'll come to miss this sound when we go fully electric. Porsche.... There is no substitute.
unless you'd like a nice quiet asbestos and to sit in a convertible in stop and go traffic exposing yourself to brake dust?
'3:35 delivering uncompromised safety...' *shows a Carrera GT*
Marlin Jojo he died because they did 90mph on 10 year old expired performance tires. Ive used expired tires before, its like driving on a skating rink and the tires are hard and brittle
thats funny actually funny best paul walker joke ive seen yet
I love the explanation now i can point folks to this video while stopping at a redlight.... oy
He makes squeeky breaks sooo cool
Yes, now I have a 150k EUR brand new Porsche that sounds like a HORSE CART before full stop. No other car had this issue. Thanks for the great video - this helps! I will keep in mind that I have the state of the art brakes! This was my 4th and last porsche
I have three Porsche. I just fucking love this brand. Their performance, profession, passionate, etc. I want work for Porsche so bad!
Love my Cayman GT4 brake squeal 😎
That's true but when driving around town there is no need to abuse the brakes and reduce the pads lifetime just because
All true mine are steel rotors though , the car is a beast after the engine is completely broken in which I felt after 3500-4000 miles, Do you have COBB tuning ?
How do you get it neutral? It comes built from Poland in the neutral settings (middle hole on front and rear sway bars). Got the Cobb, but wasn't noticeable until I put the IPD and Fabspeed race headers and custom Cobb tune from Fabspeed
EVERY high performance brake I have ever used squeaked some, especially at low speed when they were cold
underrated video :|
Wow!! I'm really starting to believe in Porsche. Maybe I will own one some day.
I hope to make the Mission E my first Porsche.
You won't regret it!
Starting? So up until now you didn't believe in them?
Mike, I must say I didn't. About 20 year's ago I test drove a 911 black on black it was gorgeous!!! I think my love relationship is somehow returning. I'm thinking GT3 black on black manual.
Oh these cars have come a long way in 20 years. Much more refined and civil enough daily driving, not to mention crazy performance. And your thinkin a blacked out GT3 with a manual trans? You lookin for a boyfriend?? lol
Well when people pay premium for a product they tend to expect near perfection. Brake squeals tend to be associated with cheap or faulty so when it occurs in a such a luxurious vehicle, concerns are definitely raised hence the complains
complaining an enthusiasts peformance car is too noisy. you might not be the right owner.
Incredible excellence of engineering!
This video summed up:
You bought the fastest car, it can stop the fastest. Stop-go traffic noise reduction was the wrong end of the compromise scale for this car, so you have to live with your choices.
Summary Summed up:
Because Racecar
More videos like this, please.
Some people are bewildered why they would make this video. It's quite simple. Porsche makes an amazing product. People think that the product is flawed due to the noise when it is totally normal. If a mechanic or someone else in the dealership informs them, customers might believe that they do not want to replace the faulty brakes. When Porsche puts out a video, it tends to make things better. Plus, they don't want to tie up dealerships into fixing a problem that does not exist. Real-world and funny example: My girlfriend rode in my brand new GTS and said "for all the money you spent on this car, you'd think they'd make it quieter". Unreal. Lol. Not my girlfriend anymore :)
Sorry buddy but brakes from almost every other brand do not squeal until you get to the track cars. That’s like saying only Porsche makes decent brakes. Not true.
The guy who comes up with the fix for this is gonna make $$$$$$$.
This is why I love porsche they look good and perfom amazing
As a ford and Holden owner I'm used to this
I came here from a mercedes video about their c63 amg, they said brake squeal was a featured characteristic of their car
Please don't get rid of this squeal, it must remain an important part of the racing or driving experience of a Porsche car !
I keep the noise down by putting brake grease on the contacting surfaces on the rear of the pads, and I spray some wd-40 to the face of the rotors. It keeps the noise significantly down.
You're welcome. 👍🏻
Proof that just because you have the means to obtain something it doesn't mean you understand the thing OR use the thing for what it was designed.....
Just enjoy your car and ignore that squealing from the brakes. You have performance brakes for a reason.
My 2018 GT3 PCCB ones squeal very much, especially at hot dry days and slower speeds. As if the car didn't get enough attention, the squealing really gets the eyes and the ears on the car.
I can wait to see Nick Murray's take on this.
What does it mean when you hear a slight brembo brake squeak when turning right, and not braking?
Great explanation, however, most of the brake squeal can be resolved by blasting away any accumulated brake dust generated by the pads, with pressurized water. Happens to me all the time.
Because racecar. Love u Porsche.
I think if you oversimplify it you can say that there are 2 types of brake pads, the ''soft'' ones that are not so aggressive to the disks, they squeal less but have less grip and endurance, and the ''harder'' ones that squeal more they are more aggressive to the disks (disks maybe need change more often) but they have more grip and durability to pressure, temperature and use overall. Performance cars and racing cars use the second type, just watch any race and the sound of the breaks is obvious.
This was filmed at PECATL!

RIP
The LEGEND
thanks for that. i replayed that part like 20 times
"You're not holding your Porsche correctly." -Steve Jobs
My cayenne squeaks a ton...but I live in Florida so I'd imagine that has something to do with it. They still have stellar performance though
We are going to miss when vehicles make these NATURAL sounds responding to our INPUTS
Doesnt the material comprising the brake pads cause squealing too?
Ceramic pads are notorious for squealing and I assume Porsche is using ceramic pads on their high performance cars.
"We are incapable of getting rid of that squeal no matter what we do"
So it was easier to make a video about it instead
They're German, It's what they do.
"......Without compromising its performance"
Yeah, obviously. Bad construction ... :-(
Germans: how can we be wrong, we are German?
Please make a video explaining why there is a sound coming out of the exhaust pipes. Can you get rid of the vroom vroom noise?
Can we all agree Porsche is the one of the most reliable luxury car brands?
Cool to know when I get my new Porsche. Which I probably won’t never get
Sometimes it’s annoying sometimes it makes me feel like I’m in a real racecar 👌
Porsche: "Mr. movie maker, here is 700 hours of footage and sixty three dollars. Make a film about brake squeal." *4000 jump-cuts later*
I wondered what that squeal was! Totally when driving at low speed and the roads are wet (I live in Oregon), I have been hearing a squeal. Now I know.
indeed. all of my 75 porsches have this squeal. wealth and dollars.
lets keep the likes at 911
I love my 718 Cayman and my 911 Turbo!
This video speaks a lot about Porsche's customer base but hey, no pressure if they're keeping you up a float Porsche.
Can we get some stats how prevalent this problem is?
Great video. More explainer videos please!
LPT: Use Gasoline to reduce brake squeals and have smoother braking!
This was a touching video.
And yet I feel that, as an engineer, I could figure this out, especially with a budget the size Porsche affords.
I see it this way: if my brakes squeal, I get an auditory confirmation that they work. If they don't then there's not enough pressure on the disk to break properly.
3:24 yea but theres a charge to inspect right?
great video
Best brakes in the world (in mamy test Those are the best)
People complain about squeeeking
Maybe in the future install a noise canceller to be put in near the brake ..
A benefit of my age is that some brake squeal is outside of what I can hear...but it drives my kids crazy. #dadfun
Call Exxon Mobil, they can formulate a heat-resistant polymer adhesive go on the back of the pad to cushion it from the caliper pistons for your American customers. Mercedes solved it by MAKING THEM squeal but at a frequency that humans cant hear.
God damn this video made me miss NFS Porsche Unleashed
So... other cars don't make that sound.. , is Porsche going to charge extra to make them make this sound ? Or extra to stop it ?
When I upgraded my brakes on my Golf R, I started to experience squeal. I embrace it and think “race car”, then realize I need to drive faster to make it go away.
THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE!
the best or nithing, bmw
Actually there are plenty of substitutes.
I would love it if these videos were done by someone with a thick BadenW. accent.
Brake squeal doesn’t belong on SUVs that travel in urban areas and around people. My Macan squeals terribly. This is awful for people’s ears, especially kids. How can I get the brakes to stop squealing?? I have tried many hard stops from 70-20 mph.
Porsche: let's take a look at your car
(Squeal)
Yup it's natural 2,000$ please
Gotta love Porsche though❤
Brake squeal off your P-car is a sign of life :)
Squeal in Porsche speak is a 'Noise Event' hahaha.
Mine squeak on my '17... sure, it may be normal, but it's very annoying in bumper to bumper traffic. My Audi and BMW don't have those issues, so I was surprised it happened on my Porsche. Oh well, rather have squeaky brakes while whipping a Porsche, rather than a Nissan 😉
🤣
Indeed, there is no substitute. I will lead a life with no car till that Porsche piggy bank hits that required amount to own one.
I never knew that. Fantastic explanation!
They got so annoyed they had to make a video about it
Most major sports car manufacturers resorting to brembo for brakes and Porsche here making their on carbon ceramics. Kudos
Wrong break in use of brakes can result in squeak too , but comes into the quality of pads and rotors . And the type of brake system such as carbon or steel
My Porsche’s breaks don’t squeal. Is there something wrong with them then?
Dmitry L if they're hot they're not gonna squeal. Most Porsche owners are putt putt drivers with the ceramic brake option wondering why their shit squeals. It's because you drive it like you should own a Prius.
Yes. My Porsche brakes squeal in low temps, but they're over 15" rotors so maybe that's why they're huge
It happens more on big brakes with multipiston setups. Even worse if you are on a more aggressive than stock pad and it's cold. It varies based on wear too. On my car they will start squeaking at ~3-4k miles and go away for a few thousand and come back a few times every now and then. Basically the only fix is to get heavy on the brakes. Once you go above %50 pedal it will stop.
I never image the day in wich a German company make excuses instead of fixing the problem. I never hear an Aston Martin, Lamborghini or Ferrari make those noise. So... 🙄
