LYRICS
There was a man
A lonely man
Who lost his love
Through his indifference
A heart that cared
That went unshared
Until it died
Within his silence
And solitaire is the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
And keeping to himself
Begins to deal
And still the king of hearts
Is well concealed
Another losing game comes to an end
And he deals them out again
A little hope
Goes up in smoke
Just how it goes
Goes without saying
There was a man
A lonely man
Who would command
The hand he's playing
And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
And keeping to himself
Begins to deal
And still the king of hearts
Is well concealed
Another losing game comes to an end
And he deals them out again
And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire

One of the most talented musicians ever . When the list of greats are mentioned, Neil Sedaka should always be in there.
I totally agree. He has tremendous talent - an inspiring singer, composer, and musician.
A treasure for our ears
Amor y poder.. uno te da todo..el otro viene solo.
your mental he's god
Singer, musician, song writer. No one these days has anything close to his talent
Well I just checked and Neil is still with us today in June '24 and only 12 years older than I am . Since it seems like he was part of my youth from the time I got my first transistor radio I am so glad to be able to say thank you Mr Sedaka for a lifetime of wonderful music. Much pleasure would have been missing from my life had you not been there .
@brian13105 - SLIGHT NAME CORRECTION FOR NEXT TIME - ' Sedaka ' NOT ' Sadaka '. 😉
@@claymarston8764 Thanks
A dying breed, the guys a true master of his craft
He sings with such raw emotion you can feel the pain, the tears are in his voice. He’s a legend, no one can perform like they did in the 60’s and 70’s
It’s 2023…..this Is still MAGNIFICENT!
Estamos en 1024.!!
Está canción,sigue siendo un espectáculo y lo será por siempre!!
¿Qué es de la vida de éste gran cantante?

4 times my wife and I have been to one of his concerts. Never disappointed. Always classy and fabulous.musical genius
I saw him in Niagara Falls at the casino in roughly 2012. He had his son on with him for a couple of songs. And coincidentally, one of the musicians playing was from the Blood, Sweat & Tears band, and David Clayton Thomas (also from BS&T) was in the audience. Great show, even though he's getting up in years. Still he has loads of energy.
No auto tune. Just pure beautiful vocals and instrumentation. Absolutely blissful 💖
I have been listening to Neil Sedaka for over 60 years one of the best singer songwriters ever.he has given so much pleasure to so many people, god bless him.
😳... Awesome..
Super
The lyrics of this song are brilliant , powerful, awaking, deeply spiritual.....thank you Neil for gifting this song to humanity
The spiritual and thought-provoking lyrics of 'Solitaire' by Neil Sedaka are truly a gift to all of us. It's a song that continues to inspire and touch hearts.
Written and composed by Neil, also recorded by The Carpenters (RIP Karen). Both versions are brilliant and moving but Neil's piano lifts his version to another level!
I love how he stays just a wee bit on the top side of the pitch. Anyone else doing it would be sharp, but it works quite well when he does it. He knows what he's doing! Great song, singer, and songwriter. Makes me smile and cry at the same time. I've been playing solitaire for 60+ years. But I still hope to find a mate someday. I ain't licked yet.
Me too! Good luck.
Keep on looking Greg ,I'm 69 and 5 years ago I met a beautiful lady aged 31 and we are still together.
Keep playing Solitaire and you can win too.
Al
Exactly right.
Probably the finest song ever written and so beautifully sung. Aĺ
In my opinion sir, he was not even slightly out of pitch. i'm not sure why you said that.
This is amazing. So many lonely people all around the world just playing the game.
Neil was the first singer I idolized! I guess goose bumps when I listen to this song!❤️❤️❤️
I could listen to this song a hundred times a day and never get sick of this performance. Wonderful music and lyrics......this song touches my soul...it's like he was talking about me. I also love the arrangement...as a multi-instrumentalist, I only have the best of the best on my Playlist...I would go even further and say that this is in my top ten. Thank you for this song.

Out of this world so beautifully sang by my generation' s favorite Neil Sedaka We love you Neil ! You are one in a million.
Neil Sedaka is God's gift to music .he is a beautiful soul. 2021 and I still come back here
A musical genius! A gift in this lifetime! Thank you Neil Sedaka!🙏❤️❤️❤️
Well said! Neil Sedaka is indeed a musical genius, and "Solitaire" showcases his extraordinary gift. His contributions to the world of music are invaluable, and we're grateful to have experienced his talent in this lifetime. 🎵🙏❤️
NEIL Sedaka is such an accomplished musician......SHALOM....LEVI THIS IS JUST BEAUTIFULLY DONE BY NEIL SEDEKA....'SOLITAIRE"
Always favorite of yesteryears..
Neil Sedaka was so humble, allowing this stunning materpiece song to be recorded by The Carpenters. It was true gif to Karen's voice. Solitaire changed their careers forever and it's a legacy to humanity.
Nevertheless Karen Carpenter didn't like the song. She was probably bullied into singing it. Very sad, because it's beautiful. Anyway it's Sedaka's song, not hers.
@@gracegorman642 The lyrics in Karen Carpenter's cover are also altered from what Neil Sedaka's singing here. JI've never understood why these beautiful lyrics needed altering.
That was the first time I heard the song was by the Carpenters. I knew he wrote it, but I never heard him sing it before. Then came Clay Aiken. I have chills watching that video and listening to his powerful voice. It is truly a masterpiece.
@@Rusty3659 Actually, it was Andy Williams who changed the words when he recorded it. He thought the card analogy went on too long. When the Carpenters covered the song they used Andy Williams changes. Andy Williams also sang it in the first person - "As life goes on around me everywhere, I'm playing solitaire."
@@russellsketchley8830
Why do some singers alter the original lyrics of this song?
Very rude.
No respect to the song writer..
Why isn’t this man in the rock and roll hall of fame?
Politics
Ye. He deserves. The hall is not complete without him.
Hall of fame is just shit. Ok they putted Elvis stones Beatles etc but they don't have neik and they have Dolly Parton 🤦
He SHOULD BE in the Hall of Fame! Neil is a National TREASURE!
They don't come much better than than this. Classic.
Neil Sedaka's 'Solitaire' is a masterpiece of its own, and it's hard to find anything better. His music is a testament to his exceptional talent. 🎶👌
One of my favorite artists, and I'm a Led Zeppelin fan.
Stunning. A beautiful song, sensitively performed.
TRUTH. VERY CLEAR TRUTH.
Agree
So understated is Neil. Pure smooth tenor!!!
I absolutely love this wonderful performance of this sad song by Neil Sedaka, it is perfection. My emotionally tough husband's eyes would fill with tears when l played this, and he would swallow to avoid me hearing a sob.
A musical genius. A national TREASURE. And yet not even in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cleveland should never wonder why it is the butt of so many remarks.
Such a sad song, but so beautiful. I saw him live twice, what a wonderful performer.
Karen and Elvis may sang well, but it is always wonderful and dramatic how the composer felt and performed his own composition. That's original. I love it
No one can ever surpass the original version of this song.
Amazing performance by the legendary Neil Sedaka.
Cheers.
The living legend.
He still performs his mini concert to entertain us during the worldwide pandemic because of covid19.

Karen gave justice to the song. Her version is very soothing to ear.
Goosebumps and tears, thank you Neil. How could you not love this man?
Storytelling through song. A masterpiece indeed.
Gorgeous song and absolutely gorgeous voice!
One of the best performances ever played, without a doubt !
Neil has full command of this piece, he executes it better than anyone else, imo.
Karen carpeter the best forever
@@conceicaoferraz1785
Karen Carpenter's version was altered..
Yeah, I was prepared to prefer Karen's version. But I think he owned it!
I love this version, however, Andy Williams equals it with his version IMO
@@conceicaoferraz1785no!
What a gorgeous song! Both beautiful Karen and Neil Sedaka's versions
You should hear Elvis heartfelt version !
Neil wrote it for the Carpenters
He was my favorite singer in the 60s and he still is! I was 14 years old and I was bent on seeing his his concert at the Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines! We were very poor I could only afford a ticket for the bleachers. This was when we just released “Stairway to Heaven”! I love you Neil!
Hello I'm also from the Philippines. Around what year did Mr. Neil Sedaka have a concert in Araneta? Btw Im only 20 yrs old and I adore him ☺️
Achingly sad and beautiful.
It is really!
One of the most beautiful pop songs, and in my opinion the best of Neil Sedaka, what a genius.
Have you heard Karen Carpenter's version?

I agree, but from the look on Neil's face during the performance I'm linking you to, I suspect even he thought that Sissel came close. ua-cam.com/video/8tKMtGiADuA/v-deo.html

100% correct. I first discovered Neil when I was a 19 yr old United States Marine on Okinawa back in late 1974 early 1975.
Unreal, That's real talent and class. Great post thanks.
It's a total disgrace that Neil is not in the rock and roll hall of fame. A complete joke

Great song, great singer-songwriter and great drummer!
Love Neil absolute legend. A big shout out for the work he's been doing through COVID. Rough count I have him at 160+ mini concerts from home ..... deserves some sort of honor from Biden after he becomes President. In terms of this wonderful song there's nothing like the pairing of a great song and a great song stylist and Jane Olivor's version of this song is simply wonderful.
Written and performed (live) by singer/songwriter Neil Sedaka. Just beautiful.
brilliant song writer -- I love to hear their music (their being Neil Sedaka and Barry Manilow with his song, Could this Be Magic.).
