For people with relatively long femurs, the trap bar deadlift is like a machine version of a normal deadlift. By that I mean that I can put more effort into the movement with out the bigger injury risk of the conventional deadlift. I alternate normal deadlifts and trap bar deadlifts and have recently gone over the magical (for me) barrier of 500lbs on the conventional deads
I like to use the trap bar to overload the weight of my regular deadlift. Its always good to know your body CAN handle more weight, its just a matter of stability and technique being built up enough to handle it on the conventional deadlift.
Excellent demonstration of the different types of exercises that can be done with the trap bar. The demonstration of the hip hinge was very beneficial.
One way to make sure you don't squat the bar up is to use the low handle position for squatting and the higher bar position for DL. This way you're always bending the knees more when you squat with a trap bar and you know not to do that when you're going to DL/hip hinge lift.
For so many years that I have been doing trap bar - why did I not think of the hip hinge "Doh!" Well, I am always looking to learn - thanks to Sam for the most obvious thing I missed on the trap bar :) Pendlay rows - very cool also the unilateral RDL and the carries. I will be hogging the trap bar now!
My new gym doesn't have a trap bar. I miss it. I don't quite have the hip mobility to do deadlifts from the floor, so I'm using rack pulls now and it's just not the same.
thank you very much Sam for these excellent videos. theses tutorials are the most helpful videos, besides the great table talks etc. Thank you very much. I appreciate your work and that you share so much great content
I love doing trap bar deadlifts I love doing straight bar deadlifts and I don’t know if you guys have ever tried it but Hammer strength makes a Deadlift machine Which I really love The thing I love most about the trap bar and the hammer strength as variations for the Deadlift is when I’m not having such a great day with a straight bar because it’s not going how I want I can switch over and revamp my work out and have an amazing session using the other two implements🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Trap bar is awesome. I do deadlift workouts with carries as an accessory and I've seen a big difference both in overall strength and appearance. I don't compete, so I really have no reason to ever do a straight bar deadlift again.
I like to turn it over for RDLs. Tried the "Reeves shrugs" with tri-grip plates for a wider handle position, it's like a shrug and partial lateral raise hybrid. Will definitely try the Pendlays and heels in line with the center bar for foot position. Thanks
whats a main deadlift cue....press the floor away. The most amazing way to practice that is to use the trapbar. If you dont 'press the floor away', the trap bar doesnt move. Its game changer
3:07 squeezing scaps together? I've never heard this cue for a deadlift. It limits range of motion and is less important than lat tension (scap depression, not retraction). I'm not an expert, though. What is the motivation for this cue?
Why are you sticking with the elevated handles? No issue with using the elevated handles for the rows or the carries but I think the model you are using is a bit too narrow. If you're trying to hit the lower and /or make it more of supplemental/assistance exercise for the traditional deadlift, why not use the lower handles? I'm thinking about upgrading my trap bar to a rackable but don't really see the point of the elevated handles
If I'm training this to improve my conventional deadlift, would you recommend only training the low handles on the trap bar, or would the high handles also be of value? Obviously pulling with the high handles is easier and I can load more weight, but it feels like a shorter range of motion than a barbell deadlift.
99% of the ppl I see in the gym using this bar SQUAT the weight.. they have NO IDEA what a hinge is. The only way to learn how to HINGE is to learn how to deadlift using a BARBELL.
@@Xplora213 I think people let me get away with it because of my disability but I need to remember to be a better person, in any way I can and every day I need to learn and get stronger And become better not just for myself but for the better of just everything. The best cue I ever heard for trap bar DL’s was to keep your arms behind your body. You’ll feel yoked after that, guaranteed.
The Rippetoe 'trap bar to dumpster' movement is awesome. Great carry over to getting rid of head dookers. .
Rippetoe just got a nose bleed and has no idea why.
LOL ...Dude is lucky Rip didn't appear out of nowhere and start angrily pushing the bar around at the top of his lift
That's a name I haven't heard for a few years! Maybe this is why....

I love my trap bar. Deadlifts, OHP, Floor Press (from blocks) RDL’s, Pendlay Rows, Drag Rows, Loaded carries, Shrugs, etc. So versatile.

Perfectly explained how to DL on the trap bar. Great video.
Excellent demonstration of the different types of exercises that can be done with the trap bar. The demonstration of the hip hinge was very beneficial.
An Overhead Press with a Trap Bar is great as well (as long as you can set it up right)
yeah the stabilization is nice and the neutral position feels good. Got those from Kelso's shrug book.
once i miscounted the plates on a trap bar and accidentally hit a huge pr, without hurting myself. try that with a straight bar....
Overhead presses also feel great using a trap bar. It's like between regular overhead and BTN presses.
@@_Zane__ well the bar isn't gonna break lol.

Trap bar is kept in the feme section of my local gym ironically, with the machines for butt and such. So get some weird looks when I use it.
I just setup with the more deadlifty version Sam showed and instantly felt the difference.
I am still using my mid-80’s original Gerhard Trap Bar.
Thanks for this episode!

Great for doing heavy shrugs as well.

Awesome, I used the trap bar for carries in order to prep for ocean state's strongest man. It is a great grip builder.
That row is a great idea!!!
Love this the trap bar is so underrated.

I’m always in a bind with the trap bar. It’s a great tool but I often feel like I don’t get transfer to the big 3.
You're not applying it to build your weak points. I'm sure you just load the crap out of it and lift as much as you can
@@NittoNba44 it’s not my weak point, I guess 😂

I nearly bought a trap bar after reading Paul kelso's shrugged book, i may revisit it when funds allow
It’s a front squat variant. Look at the history and development of the trap bar.
Use the low handles for even better carryover to your main deadlift
I don’t want a big deadlift necessarily I just want a strong back and injury prevention. If it’s similar and safer I’d rather just do this
Casually has a bloody chair (probably paint) in the background
very nice! will try'em out next time I hit legs.
When I struggle on my deadlift or squat. I focus on my hinge and instantly both lifts become easier
Great tool, to save your back when training deadlift. If you choose to use it as squat , their is carryover.
Keep them coming 💪
In my opinion the trap bar by far is better than any other tool for leg development.

Is it true that using low handle for trap bar deadlifts is better? Due to more range of motion?

I love the trap bar, I’ve used it for deadlifts and frame carries. It’s so much more than a trap; I’ve never heard anyone underestimate the trap bar.

I’ve only deadlifted with a trap bar. A standard bar seems awkward and a good way to scape up your legs
That's along the same line of people saying they only squat with a Buffalo Bar because the don't have the shoulder flexibility anymore
1:57 "...general populations...." Prison flashbacks, Sam? Just kidding, man. Thanks for the video. Very helpful!
Can't believe you left out the shrugs. Louie says shrugs are the best you get out of a trap bar. (I know Louie caps a lot 😂)
