    The Toyota GR86 is a rare thing. A simple, inexpensive rear-wheel drive sports car with a manual gearbox and naturally aspirated engine. And it’s all the better for it. But why does this recipe still produce such great sports cars and why aren’t more manufacturers utilising it? James Dennison finds out.

      Most of us don't even have the skills to exploit even "normal" cars like hot hatches yet coz it's the trend we aspire to have super/ hyper cars just for novelty which is honestly pointless!.such vehicles as the Toyota GR86 make alot of sense!.

    I've had one for a few weeks. Swapped from a civic type r. It just brings a childish grin to my face, i've started going the long way round to get places if theres a chance to open it up a bit and have fun. My 81 year old neighbour commented on it said he'd had a mk1 MR2 back int he day. So i took him out in it and he had the same grin on his face as well. It's just fun motoring without all the excess. No pretence, no faff, no hassle. toyota absolutely got this one spot on.

    I’ve had two first generation ones (albeit BRZs) and now a 2022. The old ones were good, this one is much better. I live on the east coast of the US (where it snows) and I drive it year-round. I love it and there’s not much of a compromise needed to live with it. You just can’t take more than one other person with you. Otherwise it’s perfectly fine to use as a daily (and I’m 56 and 6’ tall)

    I've owned a FRS, 86 & now in an 860, I couldn't dream of owning something else.
    I've never had a mechanical issue, never had a moment where the road in front of me isn't my playground & where a corner doesn't have me pushing the limits of physics with a shit eating grin.
    I pity today's youth who will soon have to suffice with electric cars and a quiet hum or an electronic facsimile of what a TRD exhaust & engine can produce.

    Can’t believe the rear seats and boot were mentioned as a negative… one of the best things about the GT or GR, for a sportscar, the storage space is immense.
    It’s what makes it usable as an everyday car. An MX5 really needs to be a second car, the 86 doesn’t.

    • @1anre
      @1anre Рік тому

      @zinny999 as you age your priorities adjust & there are smart compromises you make so your family is comfortable and you still get am entertaining car when you are not rich enough to have 2-3 cars in the home.
      The BRZ/GR86 fails miserably at meeting that grown man need for an all-in-1 daily and spirited driver's car, but that's where the 11th Gen Si excels at and the design pulls it off even nicer.
      If you are rich, have sorted the wife with her SUV/Minivan for school runs and shopping and you want a fun car that mainly only you can enjoy, then THE GR86/BRZ might be thr answer then.

    Jumped from my 1986 86 to a 2013 86 last weekend. Engine side, it felt plenty to me. I get the point about not having to worry about torque at any gear with this 2.4. But i can assure you, an NA 1.6 in today's turbo/electric/hybrid world is way more "frustrating" than the very criticised GT86. Am I unsatisfied? Not in a 1000 lives i change the experience to battle with my car to get the very last inch of its asmatic horse power for anything todays on sale. For the price point I feel it’s quite a nice place to be and will stand the test of time well enough. Otherwise a very nice put together review. No mention of the “RTV” issue with the 86 & BRZ. Bits of surplus RTV on the inside of the engine can and will potentially break off and get sucked up by the oil pick up tube and diminish or even block oil flow to the engine. Obviously not good. Otherwise a superb little sports car. But I know Toyota and Subaru can and should do better with the RTV nonsense.

      Wrong! Toyota designed the GR86 chassis and did add a significant contribution on the technical Front as well. Example: the DS-4 (direct and port injection), Denso AIS, suspension setup (stiffer), etc…
      So don’t get it twisted. The whole design of the car inside and out is 💯 percent Toyota. Subaru of course was heavily involved with engineering, build and test. Not to mention the assembly process at the Gunma plant. It is very much a true collaboration. People often see the car coming out of the Gunma plant, rocking Subaru badges on assembled parts and a boxer four engine then automatically assume this is all Subaru 😂

    • @dimatanaka4884
      @dimatanaka4884 Рік тому

      @@Julianklaus thanks for the info. My point is that so many UA-camrs act as if Toyota was solely responsible for the existence of this car. I realize that in Europe, the BRZ is not available, so this oversight seems to be more egregious with reviewers from the UK.
      Anyway, just to add to your post, let's also clearly note Suburu's contributions.
      Chassis and Suspension: Subaru engineers were responsible for developing the BRZ's chassis and suspension system. They focused on creating a balanced and responsive platform that would deliver excellent handling and driving dynamics.
      Boxer Engine: Subaru provided the BRZ with its horizontally opposed "boxer" engine. The BRZ featured a 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, which was designed to deliver a low center of gravity, improved weight distribution, and responsive performance.
      Drivetrain: Subaru engineered the rear-wheel-drive system for the BRZ, which was a departure from their typical all-wheel-drive setups. The drivetrain was designed to provide the driving experience and enhance the car's handling characteristics.
      Manufacturing: Subaru manufactured the BRZ at its production facilities. They were responsible for ensuring the quality and precision in the assembly of the vehicle.
