On "My Car Story" we're at the Carlisle Events in Carlisle PA on 7-10-21.
We're looking at a 1968 Dodge Dart Mr Norms GSS in Black Paint. The car comes with the factory 440 CI “M Code” V8 engine, and an automatic transmission (the 4 Speed was not an option).
The car's Owner is Jason Johnson. Jason’s had this car since this week. He shares he likes rare cars, and we’ll this one was in a museum last week, and today, we’re taking it for a ride. This car has been restored and looks showroom new.
If you’re interested in learning about the different events at the Carlisle Events, go to the website at www.carlisleevents.com
ENJOY!
I love to see owners drive these classic muscle cars like they were intended to be driven. Hard! Beautiful car!

You got to drive them to keep them in operating order as your well aware of. The worse thing for any car is just sitting there as things dry up and degrade. Still, a car of this quality is irreplaceable so great car should be given when it is thrashed!
And a lady friend to share that experience.
If Dennis Weaver had this Dart in “Duel,” that old gas rig would have been left in the dust.😁
Hahaha definitely Spielberg shoulda give weaver even a 340 dart like mannix had.
Thank you for sharing.
My 3.0TT TDi now makes 330hp and 580tq and with the 8 speed S-Tronic its quite entertaining :D but Id rather have the GSS Dart
@@ssnerd583 nice🤗👍
@@stripervince1 I loved watching Mannix as a kid! Under appreciated show 🤗
Reminds me of my old 69. I put a 440 , holley dominator intake, 800dp holley carb, fender well hooker headers, crane 508/528 cam, 2800 stall , 4.10 gears with clutch unit traction. Looked just like that but no red stripes.
Oh how I miss the 80s when you could buy mopars for a few hundred to a couple thou! Now you need a second mortgage to buy one in decent shape.

Man what a car!!! I can just imagine back in 1968, pulling up to a stop light, look over at the car beside you, they think, 'oh, it's just a Dart'... Light turns green.... you know the rest of the story!!!
I Love that the radio face even says "Dart Solid State" on it and that black paint is like a mirror!!! Mr. Norm built this one right and the owner knows how to have fun with it also, totally freaked me out when y'all slid the car!!! Drive it like ya stole it!!!
Hi Hobiemarty, "Man what a car!!!" Well said :-) Lou
Lol !!! I loved the ending of going sideways, most of us watching have been there !! How lucky.. how many of us have ever owned a car that Revel made a model from ??? Exactly.. great find Lou !
Hi Richard, FUN sharing this ride with you :-) A model being made of your car is pretty cool. Lou
Yes especially us Mustang guys...lol
I have the model except I painted it in blue
I've seen a lot of MOPARs..but this is the first time I've ever seen a Dodge Dart packin' a 440 V8. Awesome! Thanks for posting. Jason looks like he belongs in that car! A perfect fit!
Hi Gerry, Right Care Taker for the right car :-) Win / Win. My pleasure sharing this car with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Seeing Real Big Block Darts and Clone HEMI one's, as an owner of twin 68s, nothing like those or this Beauty,
But to actually see the same engine bay I've lived in... Holding 383, 440 to 426 Hemi is just Amazing Dude..
Another beauty Lou!
Mr Norm’s are so much fun. I’m fairly certain Jason will be a great caretaker for this special Dart.
Hi Jeff, I think we have the right Care Taker in the right car :-) Win / Win. Lou
Wow, this Dart loves to run! After all the time spent in a museum, I bet it is just as happy to be in Jason's hands, as Jason is to have it! Thanks, Lou!
Th TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to receive a "Wow" from you. I think this cars engine expressed it likes and enjoys the ride with us :-) Lou
Great car Lou. Thanks so much for finding this rare beast. Most 68 Darts were reduced to a pile of rust just as the warranty expired so seeing this one is a treat.
Hi Rich, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
The model in the Trunk & Treats is very cool.
Thanks for bringing this one to us Lou.
You know you got a special car when they make a model after it! Really cool!
Hi Jeff, Happy to share this RARE treat with you :-) Glad to read you enjoy the model too. You're welcome, Lou
The GSS had the Chrysler 440 wedge-head V8 tied to a Torque-Flite 7273-speed automatic and 50 were built in 1968 priced at $3,780 - no warranty.

@@loucostabile Another 600 units of the GSS model were made in 1969, probably at $3,995. Also, in 1968 the GSS saw a drag-strip-ready Hemi version under the option code LO-23, the Hemi Dart; 80 were built with 426 Hemi V8s priced at $5,280. And there was also the Swinger, a similar idea to the GSS but it came with the GTS' 340 V8 rather than the 440 V8. It debuted in 1969 with a $2,995 price tag.
I had the pleasure of cruising Detroit in this car many years ago. The paint/bodywork is out of this world, that's what you get for $100K.....

Another amazing vehicle. No one would know there is a 440 on that hood. A real treat brought forward. Glad to see it got to an owner in Jason who will take care of it like the museum did. Thanks Lou.
Hi Kevin, High praise :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, and you're welcome, Lou
The Dodge sports should have came out in a 440 from 1968-1976. One thing that gets me, how did you get the air filter to fit under the bonnet? Every time I see a dart with a 440 they have a air scoop on the bonnet so the air filter fits. Or am I missing some thing? From the land down under.
Time to wake up and play little Dart... Thanks Lou
I'm awake now :-) You're welcome BartRicky.
Wow. I built this model as a teen. I messed it up by painting it maroon with a white top and Keystones to resemble my friends 75 Dart Swinger. :) What a piece this one is. I bet she's rowdy with that 440 in that light body. Very cool video. I know that was a pucker moment when she tried to get away from Jason, but he saved it. Hehe. Thanks for sharing Lou. Take care.
HI Russell, Happy to read this one brings back memories of the model you had :-) Glad to read you enjoy this video, and you're welcome, Lou
Jason has one awesome car. I ❤ the music 🎶 coming from the exhaust. And the bonus tire squeal ;-) brought a smile to my face as well 👍👍
Hi James, "brought a smile to my face" Mission accomplished :-) Lou
I loved when he put so much power to the back wheels he was starting to lose it!! A car that weights squat with that engine just might fly if you added wings. Just incredible.
Pretty dang amazing !!! "We gotta do that again !" uh, nope ;) Car is awesome !!
Early '70s, i knew a guy in high school which after a few years, saw again as a friend of the family of my GF/Wife.
Him, '68 or '69 GTS 340. Me, '69 Charger 383 mag. Always cool hanging out.
Hadn't seen him for awhile but the passing of family had him at a memorial luncheon a few years ago.
Had to ask about the GTS. Happy to hear that while it's not running, he still has it! Mine's been gone since '80.
Thanx for the memories, Lou !

Fantastic! This is a treasure of a car! Congratulations Jason on nabbing it! Lol… fun memory- my mom drove a late 60’s Dart when we were kids- circa late 70’s. The exterior was white. The movie Ghost Busters came out. We affectionately nicknamed mom’s Dart - Dart Buster !
Hi Dave, "Dart Buster" NICE! Lou
Mr. Norm, Nickey, Yenko, and Ron Tonkin those were the days of red, white and blue performance. How lucky we were to pass through the same years as they were tuning American muscle for the select few but for the amazement of us all. There’s a lot of appeal in this car? Beast! Very nice 😊 thanks Lou✅
Hi Hubert, Happy to read this car appeals to you :-) You're welcome, Lou
Another great car! If it wasn't for Mr. Norm there may have never been a big block in a A body Dodge or Plymouth. The factory said it couldn't be done in 1967 when the new body style came out. Mr. Norm had his mechanics figure out how to put one in a 67 Dart then took it to Chrysler and showed them. That's when the GTS was born! Of course Chrysler didn't put a 440 in so Mr. Norm took a 383 car and installed the 440. They did make a limited number of 440 Barracuda's in 1969. 69 was the last year for the A body Barracuda. The 1970 was a E body platform. One of the Tech's I worked with in 1969 ordered a 440 Barracuda. It was quite a beast and he promptly turned it into a race car!

@@loucostabile Just watched a 4 yr old vid of yours, doing a 74 Triumph TR6. A gorgeous red one. We’ve ( blessedly my wife is a gear head, too! 2nd marriage for both of us - much smarter “choice”), well we’ve been considering another “summer” car (I’m in Ontario Canada, currently) and we’ve been looking at mid 60’s to early 70’s luxury coupes…… but!……. We are now moving to the mountains of central British Columbia Canada (Okanagan valley) and the TR6 is now my “gotta have” car - winding mountain roads! (not so cool for a 70’s Chrysler! lol).
Anyway - my REAL point here, is to say how much I appreciate your kind responses. You’ve made me a little part of your larger on-line community. I can’t wait to post a link to a shot of my soon to be had Triumph (sometime over this winter or early spring). I’m a “conceived” in Northern Ireland guy, to an Irish dad and an English mom . When I was driving my Skylark GS in the mid 70’s, a buddy had the first Triumph that I got to drive and “examine”. I was soooo hooked, yet NEVER. got one! The positive part of being a boomer is, I have a little dough to “invest”
Thanks, man - you needn’t respond to this long, rambling note - just felt the urge to give you an “audience member profile” lol
Look forward to many future posts of yours!

Hi Timothy, Happy to read this car brings back memories of Mannix's car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
@@loucostabile I once had a '67 Dart GT with the GTS hood, but it had a slant six.
Beautiful Dart, but what's up with the hubcaps? Where's the Black paint that's supposed to be in-between the spokes, like on the model box? 🤔
Hi sportsterray66, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Not sure about the black in-between the spokes, Lou
@@loucostabile It looks as if the hubcaps were rechromed, and they didn't bother to paint the areas between the spokes Black? During the ride portion, it sure sounded like it rattled a lot also. If he just bought it, and it was restored recently, I would have it completely gone through before driving it, especially driving it hard. I'm glad he didn't lose it on that burnout, and jump that tall curb. That would've sucked really bad. I saw a UA-cam video where a guy in Australia bought a '57 Chevy Bel Air online from one of those places that sell muscle cars here in the USA. It was a recently restored 2-dr hardtop, looked beautiful in Onyx Black with Black & Red interior, all stock with fender skirts, and had an aftermarket stereo, A/C, and power window kit installed. When the guy went to pick it up, he drove it straight to a shop owned by a buddy of his to give it a once over, and it looked like an amateur restoration job by the dealership that sold it. His buddy told him he was glad that he brought it to him. While it looked fantastic with a beautiful new paint job & interior, a lot of the bolts weren't tightened underneath the surface. The upper control arm on one side was about to fall off, other parts under the hood were loose, the A/C didn't work, and one of the power windows didn't work. He paid a lot of money to buy the car, have it shipped all the way to Australia, only to be disappointed in the condition of the car when it arrived, and of course they weren't much help once it left them. His buddy went through it, checking & fixing everything, he removed the fender skirts, and stock wheel & hubcaps, and put on a set of Craiger 5-spokes with white lettered tires. Now he can actually drive it safely, and is happy with it (after spending even more money), but the point is that even if a car has been "restored", and looks great, was it done by a competent restorer, or backyard mechanic. There's a lot of beautiful restored muscle cars out there for sale, but you need to have it looked over by someone else before spending big bucks for it, too many scammers out there. Another guy bought a beautiful restomod '69 Camaro as a retirement present to himself. He paid a lot of money for a Silver with Black stripes & interior, R/S S/S 396 car, or so he thought. The car was still in the trailer at his house after picking it up, when a tornado hit his area. The trailer got tossed around a little with the car strapped down inside it. The car had damage, with the back of the roof being a little crushed. When the insurance was having it repaired with new reproduction sheet metal, you could see inches of Bondo in a lot of areas. He started thinking he was overcharged for a crappy restored car, but soon found out it wasn't even a real R/S S/S 396 car. It started as a Blue 307 standard Camaro, and was poorly restored into what he thought was a nice rare car. If people want to spend big money on their dream car, your best bet is to have an expert with you that knows that type of car, and check it thoroughly. People need to stop shopping online without seeing stuff in-person, and quit having Amazon deliver packages to their front porch so someone can come by and steal it. What, they never thought to have it delivered to the Post Office, and just pick it up later? People are getting too lazy & stupid about online shopping. Great video as always Lou, and I shared it, along with the Top Banana Yellow '70 Challenger R/T 440 Six Pack you also just uploaded!
I believe those are '69 Dart hubcaps on the model. The '68 car looks to have the correct ones.
The part I Luv the best about this car it that it was rescued from a museum

Drive them hard and have a blast. Trophy’s and museum pieces are one thing but this car was meant to be driven
Hi Max Wedge, I like driving or riding in them too :-) Lou
A close friend mentioned that GSS Label a few years ago when a group of us were talking cars.
The year was about 1972 or 73. He was at a respectable car dealer in WI. Saw a clean dodge charger and wanted to look it over. He noticed the label GSS and thought someone had played a prank. A salesman came charging out and started talking wanting to make a sale. It turned out the salesman knew it was a Mr Norm prepped car. Mr Norm did not just stuff a factory engine in a car and slap a label on it. NOPE, he modified the engine. Hot cam, reworked intake special exhaust.
My friend took the car for a ride out on interstate. He drove up to next town watching for cops and came back. When he stabbed the gas, the front end came up, the back squatted down, both tires were throwing streaks on the pavement, and there was a lot of squealing from the tires, he was stuffed back into the seat by the force. Even when the trans shifted into third the front of that car stayed up where it was in first gear. The speedo was way past 140 when he flew underneath an over pass. That made him realize just how fast he was going. He backed off and took it easy the rest of the test drive.
That was in a longer, heavier charger and that is why the much lighter Dart in this video went sideways.
He wanted that car but they were asking a lot of money. My friend told him the price was too high and left hoping they would come down. He stopped after work the next day and someone who knew what that car was bought it without even driving it. My friend was really sorry he didn't agree to the higher price when he had the chance. LOL
Hi Chelley, Thank you for sharing your story. Good news! Here is one more, Lou ua-cam.com/video/zWj81QHzooY/v-deo.html
We wanted to see you do it again at the end.
NICE !
Awesome find Lou, thanks for showcasing this one. Like the console and the thumb wheel am radio. Is that a manual steering, manual brake car?
Hi James, Happy to read you enjoy this "Awesome find" :-) Lou
This car is a beast. Nice.

MOPAR OR NO CAR !!
👏☝️👍💪💪💪
Jason Johnson is truly blessed to have this Mr Norm GSS. I bet the manual steering (6 turns lock-to-lock?) and manual brakes (probably 4 drums - I hope the fronts are 11x2 or 2.5 inch!) - this car does require effort to drive, even at normal or slow speeds.
CONGRATULATIONS!! AMAZING !!
I never had a 383 or 440 Dart, but I did have a factory 1969 Dart GTS 340, column shift 727, 3.55 SureGrip, front disc, power steering & brakes, 14x5.5 with E70-14 bias plys (factory D70-14), dark green with bench & all black interior. Supposedly it was factory with the flat hood - which I did not verify as factory. Wish I still have it! Engine had a slightly bigger cam, 2500 stall converter = 13.1 secs at 103 mph, on bias plys.
Hi Joe, Happy to read "AMAZING !!" :-) My pleasure sharing with you, Lou
@@loucostabile Thanks Lou! I hope you read my edit!
This has brought back sooo many memories, too.
That last scene !!!
Happy to read you stuck around for that :-)
Did he buy it from the museum, auction, or individual? Posi rear end?? I would have liked a better look at the console. Lou I will have to look back at the information board that yo panned. Cool car. This is the first I've heard of this car but to have a model made to sell says volumes about how special it is.
Hi Bill, Not sure how the purchase was completed. Here is one more for you to enjoy, Lou ua-cam.com/video/zWj81QHzooY/v-deo.html
Hello Lou How do you find these gems 🤩🤩🤩
Hi colonelparcoeur, I seek, I search, I video, and I share with you :-) Lou
I found one once that was a 69 GTS that was originally a 383 4 speed that somebody had put a 340 and an automatic in it. It was unrestored and I just didn't have the money for it at the time. But ended finding my Duster a few months later
Ahhh a happy ending as your Duster was the right car for you :-)
@@loucostabile yes Lou it sure was.
A stick shift is cool but when you "punch" an automatic big block and you hit passing gear magic happens....Thanks Lou
Hi Mike, Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou

very nice my cousin had a green one like that it was 383 car
Hi Randy, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Cousins car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
My cousin had one of these. 440 Dart. Was a trainee Toronto cop in 69. Was out racing one night when the cops showed up. Knew he would be kicked off the force if caught. The article in the Toronto Star said the police while chasing him were going 135 and he left them in the dust. Unfortunately while trying to escape he hit a tree 20 ft in the air. Spent his life in a wheel chair. I remember him saying it would almost do a wheele. God rest your soul Joe.
Hi Martyn, That is quite the story. Sorry to read spent his life in a wheel chair :-( Lou
@@loucostabile Yes it is. People don't realize today how bad these cars handled and braked as fast as they were. I learned to drive in my dad's 69 superbee when I was 15. Can rember passing cars on 2 lane roads, getting up to 100-120 and having to slow down as there was another car in front. By the time you got to 60 the brakes were pretty much gone and you were gearing down so you didn't rear end them. I'm lucky to have survived considering a young dumb kid in a powerful car. Many didn't. No wonder the insurance rates whent sky high on muscle cars. Love your videos Lou. Brings back the memories, both good and bad.
I HAVE TO FIND OUT THE NEXT CAR SHOW IN CARLYLE , P.A.

I JUST FEEL BAD THAT THIS YOUNG GENERATION ISNT APPRECIATING. CARS LIKE THIS MOPAR
Hi Andrew, Well UA-cam will hopefully get them too :-) Lou
Lou, if you could briefly state what made a car from Mr. Norms so special? thanks
Mr. Norm's Grand-Spalding Dodge was the biggest Dodge dealer in the country at one time during the 60's and early 70's, almost all his cars were high proformance ones. When you bought one from him, he had it dyno-tuned there, timing recurved and carb calibrated before you toke it home. he also sold a lot of speed parts from his place.
@@TheRacerbrown Wow. Thanks Lou!
Hi John, Looks like TheRacerbrown shared the answer to your question. Lou
@@TheRacerbrown Thank. you!
@@TheRacerbrown saved me some typing.
His comment of “Nothing to tell you there’s a 440” - those that know know that the red S tells you it’s a 440 from Mr Norm ... and not just a 440 but tuned by Mr Norm
Fabulous,
Happy to read you enjoy this car Simon :-)
