Poet Reacts to Ren - Jenny, Screech, & Violet Tale Trilogy
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 бер 2023
- I am finally reacting to Ren's song trilogy of Jenny's Tale, Screech's Tale, and Violet's Tale. Is Ren a singer, a rapper, a poet? It's hard to place him in a box, but one thing is certain. Ren is an incredible storyteller! Being that I am a poet, I have a strong appreciation for an artist who can use wordplay, rhyme, and complex line structure to craft a detailed story. I hope you enjoy this reaction.

May I ask what you think of Tom Macdonald?
I’ve been meaning to react to him. Do you have any suggestions???
The System by him is amazing!
I just saw Tom MacDonald and he is also amazing. Ren's storytelling has a shocking reflection of our society today. As hard as it is to watch, he directs a spotlight on the need for desperate change to our society.
@@YoungbloodPoetry Tom’s catalog is very diverse from personal struggles, societal commentaries, politics and comedic satire to flexing about his rap success in spite of all odds and industry. You can start at his viral beginning of success, “Dear Rappers”. I enjoyed almost every one, so take a dive in and see how his music fits you.
@@YoungbloodPoetry I think "No Lives Matter" is very relevant. Probably my favorite of his.
Jenny and screech.
Their lives began laying side by side. Ended the same way.
Jenny, just like Violet, stayed silent and couldn’t move.
Screech, just like his father, was a violent man, with the devil in his chest.
IT ALL COMES TOGETHER SO BEAUTIFULLY
Yes! But beautifully AND tragically
Yes Jenny was a prostitute....the following lines in the song indicate that...
"Cause she'd walked it about a thousand times before" showing that she walked up and down so many times plus it was late at night she was "dragging her feet" indicates she has been on her feet for hours at night.
"but stayed as still as a statue in high heel shoes" she was wearing high heels late at night walking the streets ...."I'll slice the rosy off your cheeks " indicted she had heavy make-up on enough to slice off (so to speak) combine all those hints together walking late at night the same streets so many times wearing high heels and lots of make-up on points to her being a prostitute....
I cry every time I listen to this trilogy.
Ren has a very uncanny knack of making you feel seen and connected.
So I was never a world class guitarist but he often plays deliberately imperfect because this is truly theater. Even with nylon strings he sometimes will pluck them hard or soft. He plays dissonant chords and sometimes bends strings when you shouldn't to make a point. A guitar teacher might be angry. A vocal coach might be angry. A theater teacher would be in love.
Performance art
Yes love it
So many folk miss him torturing the shitty strings on his shitty guitar to express emotions
Yes! Theatrical artist he is.
Is he using nylon or gut strings?
The story was made up by Ren, but he was inspired by a news report of a 14 year old being convicted of murder in England. Great reaction!
Thank you I had wondered that too and I actually had tried to Google similar things from 2005 in England but living in America the search results just don't give me anything that comes close to what's going on.
Small point to remember since the police in the Uk are not armed it could never be true , Screech would have been tazered.
@@dianeshelton9592 there’s definitely armed units in the UK
@@hannahmcfadden45 oh course there are however they don’t just patrol the streets armed. If an armed policeman is needed then they will be called and generally there within 3 minutes. My point is, Screech wouldn’t have been shot by a policeman in the UK taken by surprise. Probably tazer then if a gun was needed after that it would have happened after a controlled situation where the police have to warn any criminal first. Not a surprised reaction.
Ren has a paid up poetic licence.
I think what's so impressive about Ren's guitar playing is that it's atypical. He taught himself by watching & slowing down videos. It’s not being self-taught per se, but (as he has remarked) that because he never learned the "rules" of playing, he never thought about breaking them. He just plays what seems to fit the best. He's imperfect when it's right to do so. You'll notice the same with his singing as well. He'll sing off if it sets the right tone. He's very deliberate, very creative, and a masterful storyteller. I think it's the small imperfections that make it more "real". They draw you, so it feels like you're conversing with a regular Joe.
Reminds me of a line in "Lane Boy" by Twenty Øne Pilots, "Don't trust a perfect person, and don't trust a song that's flawless."
Ren does an incredible job of drawing you in to Violet's tale to the point that you almost forget about everything else, and then...
Man that got me the first time I watched this. was so sucked into violet's tale that I completely forgot about jenny and screech by the end.
exactly!
The saddest thing is poor Jenny's tale was lying there on UA-cam for the last four years just waiting to be found.
Well now it has
It actually made it to 6mil views back than on it's own already:)
Was pretty fire
Was it real? Where can I find the video?
I never hear anyone talk about the beggining of VIolet's tale when the camera pans out from the bed and shows the patient name is Violet on the patient log on the end of the bed, his confused wailing seems to me to show the spirit of Violet trying to understand what is going on as she lies in the Hospital bed, he then rewinds to show what happened to put her there. It is London in 2005, 14 years before the stories of Jennie and Screech. Towards the end the guitar winds time again up to the moment of her death. In Screeches tale he shows the interaction on the phone and he is a victim of instant rages against women, just like his father.
On first viewing, I took 2 0 0 5 to be Violet's hospital room number.
The saddest thing about this is the fact each of these things are happening in every town, city, and country at this very moment and the cycle continues
I think REN’s description of this as Bardcore is so perfect.
OMG this guys storytelling along with his instrumental is absolutely amazing, a breath of fresh air musically. Thanks for showing me this.
You’re welcome! And thanks for watching!
@@YoungbloodPoetry Ren is Scat Singing like Ella Fitzgerald in Jenny's Tale when He sings Out 9:30 like Ni i ine thir ir ty .

I return to your HI Ren reaction in particular!
Curious... question for ya!
While performing Live... how important is it to be able to "Improvise" on the spot... while performing LIVE!!!???
On that note... i ask ya to react to Rens latest "Short" posted on the 4th of July!
Would make a Great Short for you to explain the Need to be able to Improvise on the Spot, when needed!
You didn’t miss a trick and your enthusiasm for the material was a thing of beauty. Never lose that sweet smile, and thank you for the mini lesson on lyric and narrative poetry as a retired English teacher that really warmed my little heart. Much Love
This trilogy is so powerful. I'm not lying when I say that I first watched this over a month ago, and only in the last couple of days I have been able to come back to it. My initial reaction to Violet's Tale was so harrowing that I couldn't deal with it for a bit. The masterful twist at the end was a shock, yes, but the section that begins with Ren singing, "And, ah! She never stood a chance" as the camera pans up the empty stairwell is what sent me over the edge. Still makes me cry like crazy when I watch, but I don't hyperventilate anymore.
Ren's story telling skill is simply stunning. Not to mention his performing ability. The guitar at the beginning of Violet's Tale is haunting. Yes, all one take, shot live with a lavaliere mic. Just breathtaking.
I felt the same way! I also watched Violet’s Tale first. It’s difficult for most of us to imagine a world like the one Violet’s experiences. But REN’s music and lyrical imagery brings it to life before our eyes, and we feel it viscerally. I found it painful to watch, yet, was impossible to look away. I was very curious about Jenny and Screech, but each time I was tempted,, I told myself I wasn’t ready. It took a several weeks before I could allow myself watch the rest of the story. What a beautiful, tragic, masterpiece!
@Parula06 It was similar for me to. I first listened to this over a year and had to build up the courage to come back. Violets tale resonated deeply and hit hard.
He follows Friedrich Dürrenmatt on this one: "A story is not finished, until it took the worst turn."
As you asked, Ren is a very, very good guitarist. As far as finger tapping goes that intro part isn't actually the most advanced but still far from easy. What impressed me more are the picked parts in the intros that are pretty complex and he plays them so cleanly while just casually walking around like hes on autopilot. He used to play in a band called The Big Push where he shreds on electric and plays bass too. A really talented guy in so many ways.
I just watched this and commented in response to his question, then scrolled down to see if anyone else responded. Got a laugh fellow kindred spirit guitar friend. We almost said the exact same thing. ✌
Waiting for his reaction of I shot the Sheriff. That’ll be awesome to watch!
As a guitar player for decades. I'm absolutely blown away with Ren he plays amazing, he sings amazing, he tells stories amazing. His guitar playing is above average.
The guitar solo at the beginning of Violet's Tale...intentionally haunting. A blend of Jenny and Screech and Violet.
Ren taught himself to play guitar after trying and failing at standard lessons because he doesn't learn well that way. He would slow down music and try and figure it out. Now he tunes the guitar in nonstandard ways to make the notes he wants to use for a song easier to achieve. it is a very practical way of doing things.
Screech chose violence and Jenny chose silence, just like their parents, and their parents before them.
Ren's just different. A master storyteller. Poetry and music. He makes us care for these characters almost immediately as if they were real because we know there is a jenny, Screech and Violet out there somewhere.
I'm always blwn away by Ren walking up and down stairs while playing guitar without missing a beat...
He does all 3 parts street preforming. The cell phone part is genius
that’s the only part i don’t get.. what does it mean
@@EurekaXhe was trying to escape the streets and got pissed off when she wasn’t around
Don't worry about people saying stupid stuff. REN has done what he set out to do. Reach people. I think at times when he was stuck in his room or even in the hosp. he had his guitar & was able to do research. He's amazing. Have a great wknd.
Great reaction. I feel that as a poet, you seem to grasp the subtle points better than many. When he said about Jenny "and the statue she was turned to butter in a breath", you knew immediately that Screech had killed her. I subscribed to check out more of your reactions.
Bro your emotional attachment is so plain to see on your face that you legit feel every syllable.
Your presence in itself was captivating. Keep up these great reactions.
Some of rens music is heavy as hell, like it's got a gravitational pull.
The line in the stair well "she never stood a chance" you paused and said "it's all the same old story isn't it?" It was written on your face you felt that in your soul. Then the song took a turn and got way heavier.
That is why I watch these reactions right here.
REN is fire! RENnaissance!!
It's a shakespearian tragedy to say the least... the twist is horrifically mind blowing!!!!
it’s the live performance’s for me *chefs kiss*
I have been waiting to see your reaction to his poetry and performance. Like a medieval minstrel bought up to date. Masterpiece. Thank you your face said it all.
Ren went full "Quentin Tarantino" on this. I enjoyed your reaction. There is not much that a person can say about Ren that hasn't been said. He does this same trilogy live in a 360 video in front of an audience. it is quite good to watch. I just started my Ren rabbit-hole journey and it brought me here. Thank you.
Yeah each of these is one take, performed live. And hi ren as well
When you asked about the video being done in one take, he is recording the song as he sings it. He has the microphone clipped to his collar. You can hear when he leans against the door in the first few lines and the cough. It was the same for Hi Ren. All in 1 take and all live recording. Makes it raw and shows his theatrical side. Fantastic.
Its actually refreshing seeing someone who actually listens to the song instead of just being hype for the camera. Great reaction man. Much love!
And I think reacting to the full trilogy in one video is the better move as other creators have split it up into 3 videos and have gotten very few views in each.
It's songs like this that remind me I'm blessed to have a great dad, married someone similar, and now have a daughter being raised by my her dad. Such a sad tale.
This trilogy had me weeping… and your reaction was everyone at the moment the twist was revealed. It’s why fans get so intense about having to listen these songs in order.
Ren is incredibly talented and so glad you found him. He is mesmerising and I love his artistry. I have watched people react to him from a mental health perspective but to hear a poet react adds another dimension that I truly love.
Great reaction and you have a subscriber in me! 🖤
This trilogy was so disturbing, but so well done by Ren. He is a master at storytelling. I love his versatility with poetry, storytelling, guitar playing, singing, acting and movement while doing all of the above.
Tapping looks and sounds much harder than it is for a guitarist but his swag and tone adds a lot to that part.
The guitar playing is "Prince" level...unbelievable.
4:55 anyone else notice how smooth buddy moved his eyebrows? been tryna do that for the past five minutes
😂🤣😂🤣
I really enjoyed your genuine emotional reaction. I find myself in the REN rabbit hole.
Loved the reaction man! That moment at the end in particular 😂 And yeah to answer your question, all of the videos were done in a single shot. You can tell by stuff like the cough towards the beginning of Jenny's Tale, and the echo in the hallway in Violet's Tale.
also at the start of Jenny's tale, his foot on the door; and later, the seagulls skwarking just before Ren says "not one word, she stays quiet"
When I discovered your channel.. the first thing I thought was.. “Omg, I hope he has reacted to Tim Minchin.” But sadly upon searching, you haven’t.
He is an Australian musical comedian.. however.. he’s a wordsmith. He does a 9 minute beat poem about critical thinking.. which you NEED to see. It’s spectacular. It’s called ‘Storm’. Make sure you check the live version, not the animated version.
Pleeeease!!
Just got deeper into the "Ren hole" and its blow me away -such a creative young man!!!!
Love the reactions! - From what i understand the inspiration for this was simply that he saw a headline about a 14 year old that was convicted of murder. He just went from there and explored how such a tragedy doesn't happen in a vacuum.
To answer your question, Ren is a very very good guitarist and the overall intro to Violet's tale is intermediate/advanced. His tapping technique was okay but putting everything together it's pretty great. Thanks for the reaction.
I saw someone refer to him as a modern day bard.... I think it fits
The guitar technique in the intro is called tapping, it was popularized by the late Eddy Van Halen and tbh it's not the most difficult technique to master or pull off but Ren used it in a way that suited the music which is what's most important imo.
Has anyone else noticed that the song was released in 2019, Jenny and Screech were 14 years old and Violet died in 2005....
Bro!!!! That makes so much sense
Each of the 3 are Live 1-take videos that are put together in order to give You the full story and its impact.
It's theatre darling.
It is so refreshing you got the story. So many reactors get it all wrong.
I am 2 minutes into this reaction, and the way you word things has made me subscribe.
Thank you 🙏❤ Youngblood Poetry ❤ for your 🐷 Ren - ❎❎🎸🎺🏥🔪 The Tale of Jenny and Screech reaction! #ren #taleofjennyandscreech #violetstale
True artist is REN
I do believe that your reaction is real cause you have POET SOUL. If I can recommend something to you Ren - Losing it ( FISHER rap retake ) you will like it because lyrically is amazing 🤯🤯🤯 , Ren - What You Want is like Old School classic and those're happy song, Ren - Dear god, Ren - Do you believe, Ren - Hold On those are deep and amazing.
I loved the little pig blowing into the paper bags. That is how I feel whenever I watch Ren's videos. GREAT reaction!! Thank you.
Yes it's a true story that Ren read about in the newspaper.
It has a name: Bardcore!
See what they did there? 🤣✌🏼
I've been down the Ren rabbit hole recently-here's what I have come across(not fact checked!). Bardcore is his self described style...someone made the observation that Jenny was silent, like her mother Violet -and Screech violent like his father. Also mentioned was that Screech's girl was busy -because his mate Patrick(who wasn't home) was over. IDKT -makes sense. Next level talent:)
This has been around for so long and glad it got found.... people seem to enjoy this better than Hi Ren or any of his other songs.
was looking forward to this one from you! All 3 songs he plays the guitar in a different style. He is such a great entertainer. I imagine his busking days (and I am guessing he has probably had stage performances when younger) have contributed to this. A little more on the trilogy. The videos for Jenny and Screech's tale were released in 2019. Violets Tale was released in 2022 (can you imagine the shock of hearing Violets tale 3 years later). Anyway, the rewind in violets tale goes back to "two zero zero fiveL 2005 (14 years prior). The beginning of Jenny's tell says "there was this hooded young youth by the name of James, he was 14 years old....." wow the planning to release the trilogy years apart and putting the story together. amazing.
To me the words suggest the start(and end) of Violet's tale is 2005. The rewind is back to her childhood then the fast forward back to the hospital room.
Check out Ren’s video “In morte, ut in vita, numquam partiemun”. It is a short addition to Screech’s tale to help promote the release of Violet’s Tale.
This is such an ode to the London story. As a Londoner, I love it but also hate it. Which is a good thing.
At points is reminds me of Arthur Conan Doyle in its gruesome detail, but then at its most raw sounds like the scary nursery rhymes that grew from the gritty, lawless and remorseless East End - think Ring a Ring of Roses meets Jack the Ripper…
It’s so culturally on point, and relevant. Like a time capsule for London 3020.
This man is to short form poetry, wary tale, drinking ditty and dramatical musicianship that Banksy is to the art world. Can’t wait to hear what he does next.
Word to Ren.
have you some fun with what you want or losing it, or even hunger, just some fun tracks by our mans Ren, and Power, definitely Power
Yes this is one take. Most of his last videos are one take…and some are incredibly complex. Unbelievable. Both he and his photographer friend
Haha. Your face added with Kevin Hart’s was priceless! 🤯.
I love watching reactors hear this the first time. You didn’t disappoint ❤
Tragic cycle of violence so beautifully done
A Bard named Ren has entered into our lives and I for one am better for it.
11:02 Surprise! He made it all up. He'd heard a news story about a 14yo boy arrested for murder and he took it from there.
It's not directly a true story. It was inspired by him reading in the news about a 14 year old boy that was convicted of murder. And then his brain took it from there.
Two twins laying side by side...No....a girl named jenny....NO! and a boy named screech. NOOOOOOOOO! I believe your goosebumps. THANK YOU for not splitting them up; they belong together. You react like I do with the Spanish/classical guitar riffs...👀👀 The poetry; the use of background, the use of a guitar for things no one has ever used it for. Camera work, background.....13 minutes...three people's life story. The ACTING. This is not "easy listening" ....it is beautifully tragic. THE ART! Not...controlled, or edited, just....sung to project the story, the emotions...the first two songs have no "end"...they pause and roll into the next part. A+ A+. Lyrically dense, yes! Tasty to ponder like shakespere!
Great reaction, I have watched this Trilogy a few times and everytime he sings "She never stood a chance the devil came to dance" I get a cold shiver over me every time.
I subscribed to you on the basis of your channel and this reaction before you even got to Violet's tale, but that was pretty much how it hit me. I've seen this a few times now as I watch reactions. In going back to the beginning you find the things you missed that fit the ending. Who is Jenny? What was she doing walking the streets at night alone, prey for a fourteen year old boy? The same age as him. In high heeled shoes. Little wonder she wanted to escape.
But what I'm realising is that although Ren is the only person we see, by the time he's telling us about Violet, and she's beaten up, on the floor, we believe in her so concretely that if you put an actress there it would destroy the illusion. We believe in her in our heart. We can almost see her. We see her with our heart. That's a skill any writer of poetry or prose hopes for in their work. But to see it realised in a performer? That makes Ren so exceptional I have no words.
I also love his "the statue, she was turned to butter in a breath" line. Knife through butter. I see it.
There's a great video on Ren's channel called, Ren Talking With Tony... and in it you can listen to what Ren has to say about the shocking things he makes music about.
It's worth a listen to if you wanna get inside his head a bit about the music he creates.
Best trilogy in the World and Ren in the best :) Respect from Hungary
He does most of his videos in 1 take and live and the more mainstream rap songs he makes all his own beats ext..👍🔥😎
The guitar intro is very hard on violets tale I'm pretty experienced and it took me a respectable amount of time to get it down on an electric guitar. Him doing it on acoustic (harder strings) is simply insane
"The Hunger," man. "The Hunger." 🔥🔥🔥
Then "Chalk Outlines (live)" ✌🏼
Hi I am from the UK. Love your reaction vids. Have u herd about Shakespeare. Ren is what you call on Shakespeare times as a bard. Bards tell stories through songs. Ren does this brilliantly
M8 i have waiting to your reaction from this because i knew you would appreciate it as a man of the spoken word
Each section…one take. Ren insists. May not be the first take but will be one take.
What an amazing bard this young man is.
Very touching reaction. Just discovered your channel by discovering Ren. He’s amazing. Thank you for sharing your educated opinion with us.
From what I understand he does these live. 😳 Goosebumps....
Love Ren, please do a review on Ren w Chinchilla both songs are absolutely beautiful beyond belief. Love your review & reactions!
Wish I could watch this reaction for the first time again
the most inappropriately timed use of Kevin Hart lol love it
Goosebumps to my first watch….love your reactions don’t you change a damn thing about how you do yours, it’s great already. Thank you
Ren is self taught on guitar. Slowed down videos of musicians to discover finger placement then worked out how to move between those placements that were easiest for him. It also seems Ren does not read music nor write it. He hears it in his mind and records it as he goes. Then perfecting it the same way he perfects his lyrics. Some call these type songs Bardcore, after the ancient wandering Bards who performed stories to music for Kings and peasants back in the dark and middle ages. Kinda makes sense -- Ren was born and raised in Wales. The Welsh have a knack for these things. And the music sounds like minstrel or classical.
Great to see a reaction from a poet's perspective. I learned something about poetry and I admire Ren even more if it's possible...
Ren is a modern day minstrel
It's a sixth sense type of a WTF? moment!
This would be impressive as hell if it were all a planned story... and recorded together. But it wasn't. These parts were recorded and released over the course of nearly 4 years. He released the first part about 'Jenny' more than 4 years ago. The next part about 'Screech' wasn't released until about 3 years ago. And this final part 'Violet's Tale' wasn't released until about a year ago. So this was a story that he just kept adding parts to, until he finally wrote that amazing end to the story that linked it all together. Just brilliant.
i wouldn’t be surprised if he had the idea of doing the full story just needed time to work it all out like i’m sure jenny and screeches tales were written at the same time just not violets but he probably new when he wrote those 2 that he could work a 3 in
that guitar intri is freaking insane tho
This and many of his videos are done live and in one take. the guys a genius. If you wanna check his rap abilities then you need to check losing it and the hunger, to check his vocal range then the live version of his collaboration with chinchilla chalk outlines and his bands cover of I shot the sheriff/road to zion/Hip hop which is also a great example of his musical talent along with their version of red door and of course their own song x-box marijuana.
And thankyou for your reactions and for helping get Ren's music out to a wider audience.
It was based about a stabbing within a family in English newspapers and he wrote this
That guitar piece was straight inspiration from Eddie Van Halen I’m sure many others have done it but I swear that’s where he picked that up. off of that or John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers
No one will say the reactions too much for this song, guarantee it
I'm commenting because you asked for a guitar expert to identify whether Ren is legit or not. He is. I'm a black belt in UA-cam guitar watching yet I don't understand how to play music. But I think it counts. Great reaction!
I have been down a Ren rabbit while also so the second I saw you react to Hi Ren I knew this would be next! I am an artist as well and I am upset with myself that I am just now finding out about this musical Genius ! 👏🏽🙌🏽
