  • If you want to make your own font in Inkscape then follow along with this video first. In this video, I show you how to make a typography template to make it easy to move from Inkscape to FontForge so you can turn your SVG font into a True Type font or Open Type font.
If you have tried to use Inkscape’s Typography Template and then transferred your font to FontForge then you will know that they just don’t line up. That’s where this template comes in, follow along and make this template for yourself - creating a font in Inkscape and then moving it to FontForge to turn into an Open Type or True Type font will be simple.
My next video shows you how to use the template to make your own True Type font using Inkscape and FontForge, click on the link to watch it now:

Both programs are free and can be downloaded from:
    Inkscape: inkscape.org/
    FontForge: fontforge.org/en-US/

Hi, thanks for the tutorial! I have a suggestion: could you attach that template file, please? Sure, that would dumb things down, but this is mostly a fix of annoying inter-program conflicts, which are to be dealt with as quick and painless as possible imo. Cheers!

I think it would take me considerably longer to set up a way for you to download a file than it would for you to follow the video. If you know a simple way to do it, let me know and I may do it in the future, but for now, you will have to spend 5mins following the video and creating your own template, sorry.

@@CreateForFree I'm not really savvy with that myself, unfortunately. Regardless, your video is very helpful! Thanks again.

Hmm I can’t get the same results, my ruler on the left is inverted!

The top left corner of your canvas should be at (0, 0) and the higher the y the lower down the page you move. In the video the descender guide has the highest value. Hopefully yours is the same. The values I give you do put you low down, but when you move into FontForge you will find your glyphs are much better aligned.

Hi, would this template be useful for Arabic font design? If you could teach me how should I proceed with it, I would be really grateful. Thanks.

The template is designed so you can more easily move your font to FontForge, your Glyphs will line up better in that program. If the template that comes with Inkscape is suitable for Arabic font design then this one should also work.
