Hello, _ retr0! Just wanna drop this comment to say that I am glad your videos exist. This is the first FontForge tutorial I've seen from you and I can easily absorb all the info you have given. Very straightforward.
I'm excited to see more of your typeface tutorials, particularly FontForge tutorials. I've been browsing other avenues to learn this powerful software since the official documentation is so outdated, and then I found your channel, a good resource.
Have a good day always, _retr0!

why would you set the auto width to zero befor auto kerning? my letters were glued onto each other. So i set it back to seperation 50. But min and max i ignored. For some letters like P and T i had to correct the auto kerning afterwards. But it helped a lot. Thank you!

3:18 bruh. If you're gonna show us an easier way, then what was the point of this video? And where is the easier version?

This is literally the most automated and non-tedious method of kerning in FontForge. You literally don't need to worry about side bearings, letter spacing, or even the kerning itself because the distance between every letter kerned with this method is automatically the same. It has already done the majority of the work for you. You can just sit there and do the last step: fix what you don't like.
The more manual process would be to change side bearings for every glyph so that even without kerning, letters are optically equal in spacing. Then, instead of using the option "Use individual kerning pairs", you use "Use a matrix of kerning classes", allowing you to group multiple characters into one class. And then you go through every class combination to kern.
Automation doesn't give you perfect results. It just helps you for the most part. If you want to have good kerning, do it manually.

is there any quick way to select all the pairs so I can change the distance at once?

It should be a basic option in all that kind of programs, but we live in the Universe, where it somehow doesn't work like that xd

_Merci_ 26 x 2 x 26 x 2 or 52² pair entries (maybe fewer - not tried it yet) - That *C f* pair looked like it employed _voodoo_ "Touching" this option I will investigate _Danke_

  • @ThalesPo

Yeah, that should produce all pairs already touching each other, yet some pairs are not touching. Why is that? It would save me one year of work if they were all produced touching.
