Thanks so much for your video, we have just moved into a 1980's house, and I have an Engineer coming back to fit a new heat exchanger as I have fluctuating water temp. but just warm at the shower. The Engineer came and found the problem. And has ordered a new heat exchanger. I will have the boiler serviced at the same time. I now know what the problem is and know that these boilers are good. Again thank you.
So just wanted to thank you for helping me fix our variable hot water upstairs. Downstairs was fine, but upstairs was variable. I cleaned the heat exchanger plate but also topped up the expansion vessel and all is fine now. After her initial doubt (when I flooded the kitchen because I hadn't fully drained it) I now have a happy wife! :)
Thanks Allen for sharing your professional experiences in this video, managed to pluck up the courage to tackle the plate heat exchanger on my vitodens 100, got to say being a competent person you made this job basic enough for me, saved me money and got my boiler back up and running!! Showing you channel support and thanks very much well put together video...
I have this boiler, this video has been a real eye opener. I had issues with my plate heater fouling up, the installer blamed the rubber pipes, a known issue by all accounts, he cleaned it out and performance was much better. I have since had the boiler serviced regularly by a different company and they do not carry it out as thoroughly as this. I’ll be showing them this video. I came here as I wanted to learn how to wire a Nest thermostat, which until I get the boiler serviced is pointless installing. I’m not gas safe so won’t be undertaking any of this myself, even though it looked straight forward.
Thanks for videos. Saved me a lot of work and money. Went straight to the fault. Heat exchanger out. Cleaned, de scaled, re fitted. 3 hours later. Hot water again.
I doubt a bit of this shovel is really useful. He didn't use it. If use this wouldn't have such a nice new look. I use plastic to clean the main exchanger lot safer. ;)
Just had this problem on my boiler. It's heating to 102 but water is Luke warm then cuts out with f2 error code. Thanks to this video and others I have narrowed it down to diverter valve or heat exchanger. Saved me bundle! Thanks
Interesting video; if that boiler was removed for the hot water fault then it goes to show the value in getting a heating engineer to take a look at it (And get the boiler serviced annually too!) Viesmann boilers a really good as they have a stainless steel inox heat exchanger, so should last a while longer than boilers with the cheaper aluminium heat exchangers. Once again Alan, a great informative video!
Random musings , An interesting video to watch, but the thought in the back your mind is was this boiler removed just because of the hot water fault? so whole new boiler installation for such a small fault ?? unbelievable!
Had loads of these year mostly with 050. Some I've managed to clean others I have just straight up replaced just to save a return visit. 050 has very small fins so much hard I have found to clean. Good video l, and great pro
Alan top draw mate I had a customer call me today with exact boiler describing same issues so did a little google and happy to see this come up. Obviously I shall diagnose properly when I go tomorrow but I’m sure this vlog will be of use👍🏻👍🏻
Nice video showing how it should be done Allen. When I’m changing the plate heat exchanger I normally crack open the cold water inlet nut to let air in when the hot tap is open to let some more water out so less mopping up 👍obviously can only do this if your tap is lower than the boiler 😆 Love the videos keep them coming 👍
Another excellent video Allen ! Thanks for uploading it I’ve fitted quite a few viessmann’s and also maintain quite a few you’ll be surprised how many I’ve ‘brought back from the dead ‘! which have been condemned, all due to lack of proper servicing many had still got the factory paint on the Schraeder valveOn expansion vessel where they have never been unscrewed or been topped up! I think it’s a state of the industry at the moment to be honest, I may be wrong? Whilst the burner assembly is out you also need to clean and check the gaps of the spark electrodes and after refitting the burner assembly the condensate trap will need to be washed out. this particular boiler you are servicing Has suffered neglect and has been ran on a dirty system, The dirt and debris in the Heat exchanger coils has caused the boiler to partially fill up with condensate water I’ve seen it many times before through lack of servicing or proper servicing, shall we say? if maintained and serviced well these are a very good boiler giving great reliable service and excellent efficiency

Nice Allen I do same thing with heat exchanger but use white vinegar whilst having chin wag. If the boiler is on ground floor can you still drain through filling loop? Also I recommision vessels in situ helps with draining etc. I had one last week refilled it to 1 bar shot up so quickly and when heating was on it was so High but there wasn't actually any water inside boiler when I drained it I checked usual hose on expansion vessel but couldn't find blockage etc.
Great video. My stopped working yesterday display showing 99 degrees no hot water or heating and the burner symbol doesn't come on, any ideas what that may be ?
Hi Alan, just a question, if there is no flame when the hot water is on , is it still the heat exchanger, there is heating just no hot water and the three port vale is moving in and out when you turn on the hot tap, hope you can answer the question for me cheers
Another great video Allen, however I have a question about servicing. Would you recommend that servicing it is done based on time, ie once a year, or by usage? My Viesmann 100 is a couple of years old but It doesn't get a massive amount of use. I'm a single bloke living on my own, out working six days a week so not caning it like say a family of 4 running baths and showers and having the heating on all day long. All the plant items where work get serviced based on how many hours usage rather than an arbitrary once a year.
Does the door seal need to be replaced every time it comes apart and does it need to come apart ever year as the Worcester boilers only come apart when they fail the pressure test but a change the red burner seal every 4 years i only work mainly on the Worcester boilers as thats what i install and repair which keeps me more than busy with all my other jobs
Hi Alan, Which cleaner chemical did you use to clean the hot water plate heat exchanger . I have a similar symptoms on my potterton Promax 28He I do get hot water, but sometimes for about 10 seconds water gets cooler and then it gets hot again, this happens now and again, not always. I would say intermittent not always. I suspected heat exchanger may be partial blocked or the boiler may be operating like this from new. The boilers is 3 years old.

Hello Allen, I am in a similar situation. When I turn on the hot water, it doesn't come out very hot. When the boiler reaches 60 degrees, it stops and does not turn on again until it reaches 25 degrees. The dial is at number 6. I have cleaned the exchanger, I have also cleaned the coil and finally checked and set the expansion vessel to 1 bar. Do you have any idea what it could be? I suspect that the sensor that measures the temperature is measuring more temperature than the real one.
Interesting insight into the dark art of boiler servicing. I hope the original owner wanted a new boiler ,and not the other option. Slightly baffled by the air bleed being on the inside and the top up on the outside. I knew of a boiler that kept being topped up then it died of multiple component failure.
I do not know anything about the old owner or why it was replaced. Maybe they changed it as they were having issues with the hot water. Not really sure. Thanks.
Like always top class video ..very interesting and helpful will definitely help when going for my gas training .. Any advice.or tips best way to complete the training .. Thanks
Love your videos Alan keep up the good work! My 30kw vitodens 100 has just developed this fault, its 1st fault after 6 years! When I shut the cold water and only the hot water is open it would still be freezing cold for like a minute or so then it would go back to normal but the same thing would happen over and over again. Can you tell me why this is happening and what I could do about it please?
Hi Allen, thanks for putting up informative videos! I had a Vitodens 100 WB1A installed 10 years ago. Overall I'm happy with it. The first heating company didn't install low loss header. This reduces efficiency I was told by current authorized rep. It is cleaned and maintained yearly. However, the boiler locked out reporting F3 code a number of times. Technician determined that spark generator needed replacement. Boiler worked well for two years afterwards. Now the boiler puts out F3 code again. After last maintenance visit, the fan (or something) made loud humming noise during startup. The noise reduced once the boiler was full on. Everything was working fine otherwise. Had the technician back. He heard it too but couldn't determine the cause. I didn't want him to just replace whatever (motor or fan) making that noise. Allen you know these boilers well. I would like to get your feedback on some items. 1/. How durable are these boilers? 2/. How often spark generator needs replacement? 3/. Love to have a hot water combi version but I'm worried about having issues without hot water and heat. How reliable is the combi type? 3/. My boiler is 10 years old. Should I continue to have it serviced or have it replaced? Would greatly appreciate your opinion. Thanks. Mark.
Hiya Alan, does this boiler have a drain off point if you don't have a magnetic filter to drain from, I'm gas safe registered but never worked on this boiler b4?? Thanks bud 👍

Hi Allen- ive got a Viessmann V100 WB1C 35kw that needs the pump replacing. Does the whole system have to be drained down to replace a pump, or are there isolating valves? Cheers
Can you tell me what resistance I should expect from the seson next to the burner bleeder? Its a high thermostat. It has the 47 numer on the wire plug.
@@olek735 Sorry, I should have been clearer and avoided the colloquialism. To "tinker" to me means to work with or on some device or machinery. Here in the UK you need to be qualified to work on boilers, and I am not!
Top vid Allen. Quick question about the expansion thank where you pressurised it. For it to work properly does it need to be pressurised like you did? If so what happens if its not pressurised? Thanks
Yes it needs to be pumped up to the correct pressure ( normally 1bar ish ) if it’s not pressurised fairly regularly it will naturally lose pressure and if it loses enough pressure then as the boiler operates the water has no where to expand into and the boiler PRV ( pressure relief valve ) will dump some water, the problem is when the system cools down its now lost some water and needs topping up, this cycle of dumping water and needing topping up continues until the expansion vessel is re-pressurised ( or its failed internally )
I have the veissman 050 , the hot water flow is very slow , but its constant temperature , . no one can seem to figure out whats happening ! ..any ideas ?
Question sir should the boiler temperature drop when hot water or heating isn't being used? Or should the boiler keep reheating to the set temperature e.g. 65c if set there ?
brian jones , get the Viessmann vitodens 100 it’s a great boiler, I recommended one to my neighbour last year & he was really impressed with how quiet it was ,& how quick it warms up all the rads, but best off all its extremely gas efficient !
brian jones , your welcome Brian, just ensure u use somebody who is familiar with whatever brand of boiler you choose and also any subsequent servicing is carried out to Allen harts thoroughly high standard! I must be on my 20th viessmann boiler fitted so far I only had to call them out once & the engineer was brilliant and found the issue very quickly, which was an installer issue! This boiler Allen is working on has been mistakenly written off and replaced due to it only needing a thoroughly good clean! I see this situation quite often now
This video is brilliant Allen.... I have this exact problem, but could you answer this... My problem is the bathroom taps not getting hot but the baffling thing is the downstairs are red hot??? I can see it cutting off when I run the bath and sink taps as in your video but run the hot kitchen tap and it’s blistering hot and doesn’t cut off??? What’s your thoughts?? Thanks in advanced

Can you tell me what resistance I should expect from the seson next to the burner bleeder? Its a high thermostat. It has the 47 numer on the wire plug.
Very interesting to see how it all works (and how it breaks). I wish that I was gas safe so that I could have a tinker!
What's is a "tinker"?
@@olek735 Sorry, I should have been clearer and avoided the colloquialism. To "tinker" to me means to work with or on some device or machinery. Here in the UK you need to be qualified to work on boilers, and I am not!
I have this boiler. I have a leak from condensing trap. Can you do a video on condensing trap removal please?
Hi Alan what boiler would you recommend . I have 9 rads the one I have is a ideal classic we've had it 20 years .it is a conventional boiler thanks
brian jones Baxi Platinum is a great choice or the Viessmann 100, Thanks
Thanks Alan all the best
brian jones , get the Viessmann vitodens 100 it’s a great boiler, I recommended one to my neighbour last year & he was really impressed with how quiet it was ,& how quick it warms up all the rads, but best off all its extremely gas efficient !
@@SalimKhan-gk1fh thanks you for your advice
brian jones , your welcome Brian, just ensure u use somebody who is familiar with whatever brand of boiler you choose and also any subsequent servicing is carried out to Allen harts thoroughly high standard! I must be on my 20th viessmann boiler fitted so far
I only had to call them out once & the engineer was brilliant and found the issue very quickly, which was an installer issue!
This boiler Allen is working on has been mistakenly written off and replaced due to it only needing a thoroughly good clean!
I see this situation quite often now
Copper press on the gas pipe. I wonder if they will ever allow that here in the States! Great video Sir. What would you call that heat exchanger tool?
Found it!
I’ve got 1 that’s doing the same boiler keep cutting out and temps are getting up to 82
Hi Allen could you put up a link to the cake slice holder you cleaned the primary he-ex with? 😊
ghostmanromeo uk I got it from my Viessmann rep. Not sure who sells them. Sorry
@@AllenHart999 Viessmann sells them. I'm a US wholesaler we buy the exact same ones from Viessmann
Hi Allen
great video
where did you get that heat exchanger cleaning blade?
Darren Elaouad Viessmann rep. Thanks
Thank you for detailed explanation
This video is brilliant Allen.... I have this exact problem, but could you answer this... My problem is the bathroom taps not getting hot but the baffling thing is the downstairs are red hot??? I can see it cutting off when I run the bath and sink taps as in your video but run the hot kitchen tap and it’s blistering hot and doesn’t cut off??? What’s your thoughts?? Thanks in advanced
Maybe the boiler hasn’t been set up correctly or the boiler is quite small for the flow rate? Hard to say without seeing it. Thanks.
@@AllenHart999 thanks for replying Allen....I’m in Leicester, do any of your team work down this way? Thanks
Tom Perkins Unfortunately not sorry
What is the main reason for second exchanger being so "dirty"?
Viesmann bar us at 1 when I switch it on it goes up to 3 bar how do I de pressurise it
Great video Allen, got to do a plate heat ex on the 100-w 25kw combi, is it the same? Don't usually do much on the viesmanns, parts really expensive, I am gas safe by the way👍
Very easy to do, yes.
super advice and diagnostics ..
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video.
I have the same problem with mine, getting to 88'c then cutting out. I understood the heat exchanger and cleaning the combustion chamber etc, but what on earth was that thing you pressurised and would I need to do that and if so, with what adapter? Thanks!
Good video mate
thank you
Could you put details of that heat exchanger tool in the description please mate !
I got it from my rep.
@@AllenHart999 Thanks Allen I've been a worcester installer for about 10 years but recently I've found out that they are a large share holder of boxt so my loyalty as completely gone and I'm not keen on the idea of promoting worcester anymore....i was thinking of switching over to viessmann instead, do you think that would be a good move for my business? Many thanks Dan.
Hi Allen have you came across the F4 fault on these boilers
Peter sutton Yes, normally needs a strip down service, it could also be other things as well, blocked condensate, lack of flame. Electrodes etc etc
I have done this video. Hope that helps. ua-cam.com/video/va2n9UWW_QA/v-deo.html
Hello, I had F4 fault (condensate), Wiessman manual says refractory must be dried out with a hair dryer - how do you do that?
great video, thanks
Is this your own boiler Allen or is it a customers? Good video 👍🏼
Paul Mcgeoch It’s my boiler now. Thanks
After this service Allen was to buy this boiler. Lol.
Disconnecting the condensate pipe from bottom of heat exchanger when flushing out the debris (put a vessel under it obviously) would be a good trick .......ah Allan.
You could do it that way but i would rather do it with hose connected. then clean trap out at the end if needed.
Would anyone know what size hose is being used, which is attached to the bleed valve to clean the heat exchanger?
Hello Alan
I have just had a 111w fitted
The boiler works all ok
However when the burner turns off the boiler temperature display rises by up to 10c above the set point
After a while it reduces
The ch is set to 70c and water to 60c
Any ideas ?
Normal operation.
I wish viessmann had a dealer network here in Upstate NY
What boilers do you have over the pond?
Allen Hart Weil Mclain, peerless, lochinvar, HTP, Utica, mostly cast Iron units still in use. I installed a Buderus G115 with a riello burner last year and absolutely love it. Most homes have forced Air here but some have hot water baseboard with requires 180f degree water. Many people here that install High efficiency boilers are very unhappy because the do not see any gas savings because they don’t have the proper heat emitters. Am going to install an radiant slab in my new garage so I’m looking for the proper boiler for that. Keep up the good work Allen.
Brilliant. Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Wher did you find the nameplate?
