    This has to be my absolute favourite video of yours that I've seen.
    It is a true breath of fresh air to have someone on the other side of the conversation that is a good faith actor.
    I had just finished the video with Paul and Logan (the father who was a pastor and his son) that you did with Robert. It was hard to watch, and not just because of the complete lack of understanding and unwillingness to think... but because it reminded me, almost verbatim in places, of conversations I've had with my own mother. (I converted from being a Southern Baptist at age nineteen.)
    This was the absolute perfect video to help pull me out of the trauma rabbit hole that was.
    I truly appreciate your thoughtful and critical examination of the scriptures and the Theology of the restored gospel.
    You've helped me unpack and discard some of my Protestant theological baggage that I didn't even know I was carrying.
    Thank you, for that. And thank you for doing this. I'm somewhat aware of how exhausting these kinds of things can be. It helps a lot of people. I wish I was able to be in your friend group. Y'all seem to be precisely the kind of folks with whom I enjoy associating. Best wishes, to you and your family.
    P.S.~Thanks for the book suggestions!

    I love it when the learner is humble enough to just let Travis talk. When he gets going, man, love it Travis!

    When he started writing down the websites and research materials you were suggesting, I figured this guy was here to really, actually have a convo. That’s was one of those, dare I say, “sunshine” moments. I really hope well for this guy. Very well intentioned, and enjoy seeing and witnessing how easily you share and converse with folks. Cheers!

    Finally got done listening! Great discussion. It's always neat when someone is willing to at the very least be correct on their misunderstandings and also to learn what we believe and why.
    Great video as always Travis. Thank you for these. I always learn something, whether that is about the gospel or simply how to explain things in a better way.

    It's interesting how you kind of tipped your hand as to how you usually address different arguments, to positive outcome. You steel manned his argument and then explaned how you would normally address that argument. Dwight, for his part, generally recognized that and as such didnt take the same openly antagonistic and silly positions that are often taken by Protestants. Even if he goes away from this discussion unconvinced (and I'm writing this with still 30 minutes to go) he still has a thorough understanding of how different interpretations of a complex text can be simplified by simply reading the text. And hopefully he will realize that a closed canon is ultimately not a reasonable position. Great discussion! I wish Dwight the best and hope this conversation sticks with him.

    Cyprian writing to Donatus (~245 AD):
    As the sun shines spontaneously,
    as the day gives light,
    as the fountain flows,
    as the shower yields moisture,
    so does the heavenly Spirit infuse itself into us.
    When the soul, in its gaze into heaven,
    has recognised its Author,
    it rises higher than the sun,
    and far transcends all this earthly power,
    and begins to be that which it believes itself to be.
    Be constant as well in prayer as in reading;
    now speak with God,
    now let God speak with you,
    let Him instruct you in His precepts,
    let Him direct you.
    Excerpt from:
    New Advent > Fathers of the Church > Epistles (Cyprian of Carthage) > Epistle 1

    What an enjoyable 2 hours and 4 minutes that was. It was truly a masterclass taught by a masterful teacher. I sat there like a sponge taking it all in. Travis has a way with words when he explains our doctrines and concepts, and he does it with such confidence and flair, clarity and insight, that learning from him through these videos has been an enjoyable experience and has changed my whole outlook and approach on how I read our standard works.
    I have all the books he has recommended and have read them all (including Boylan's book on Sola Scriptura), and as a result have discovered some new ones, which I recommend: "Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes" (E. Randolph Richards/Brandon J. O'brien), and "Grace is Not God's Backup Plan" (Adam S. Miller).
    I also enjoy the other side of Travis though...the Pirate side. It seems sometimes he has to let these Evangelical scalawags (Apologia Durbanites) understand who the captain is behind the helm. At the end of each debate, I've seen the Pirate make them, "Walk the Plank," or, "Kiss the Gunners Daughter," or has to bark out orders like, "Tie that Scurvy Dog to the Yardarm", or "Keel-haul that Scurvy Dog." I'm looking forward to the day the Pirate meets up with "Pastor" Jeff. 50 lashes with a cat o' nine tail for that dude.
    Someday if I get good enough at Apologetics, I'll become an "Assistant to the Pirate."

    If people aren’t spirits that came to Earth to inhabit created bodies then when someone dies what part of them proceeds to an afterlife like the rich man in the Lazarus parable?

    "Where in the Bible..." is where they always screw up. The Bible itself teaches that prophets are the ultimate mortal authority, not scripture.

    ... when the earth was first created, it was flat - with a firm structure formed above it to hold back the waters and such. but! due to the hydrostatic pressures involved with a worldwide flood, the earth was crushed into a sphere. that's my story and I'm sticking to it :)

    • @joeriv4151
      @joeriv4151 20 годин тому +3

      Keep watching his videos he answers it a lot. First by explaining the historical fact that ancient Israelites aren’t monotheists. They are more like henotheists. LDS only worship one God. We worship the Father in the name of the Son and the Holy Spirit bears witness of their reality.

    • @missionarydiscussions1286

      @luizaraos.soteroluiz5327 I hope it's not the "same thing" all the time, but I love the topics and materials. I imagine anyone in a position to answer questions finds themselves being repetitious respecting the information they provide. It's true of anything with which you obtain to a level of proficiency that you will be requested to answer similar questions often.
