Your explaination is very clear.
Excellent review. I've been researching new phones on GSMArena before buying them since 2002. Glad your reviews are still as professional and comprehensive! Looks like I'll be getting the 5 Mk. II, it's a good sign if even the disadvantages or "nitpicks" sound like advantages to me. I like decently wide bezels, so at least I can hold the phone in one hand without accidentally activating stuff on the screen edges. I have tried several bezelless phones and they're simply not usable to me. Also, slower charging and being able to reduce screen refresh rate both mean longer battery life, which is getting more important. I would like for Sony to add an option (maybe to Game Enhancer?) to run certain apps in a 16:9 aspect ratio. I've found that a lot of apps, particularly games, are distorted, cut off, or don't even work on 21:9 screens. I'm sure new apps will be more careful about that, but a lot of older games will never be fixed. Also, I'm curious how Sony will manage to continue their tradition of increasingly confusing model names next year.
*I'm honestly very happy with my Xperia 1 Mark I but seeing these Versions Mark II I was impressed by the size of the growing and gradual quality and everything sony is doing and we have to congratulate this company that shows to be willing to do the best for the consumer!* *These new Mark II models are really amazing, excellent and essential!*
Just to let that sink in, this phone with 4000mah, got the same battery rating, as the 11pro Max with also about 4000mah, but it has the same battery life at 120Hz, meaning this Sony is the first Flagship Android for a long time to beat Apple in energy efficiency.
It's because of "probably" an adaptive refresh rate. If their endurance test is automated with less to no screen touch interaction, the refresh rate of Sony may go lower than 60Hz during the test.
@@fa14bi-78 Do you know that the S20 has QHD panel right? Even if Samsung would run the panel on 1080p@120Hz, the panel is still running QHD power consumption, the 1080p only reduces strain on the GPU.
@@3dr14ng4 So you admit that Samsung gave an Pointless screen that consumes way more power? 1440p screen is pretty pointless if it has twice the battery consumption but you can't really use it at 1440p. 14:20h, 10:48h, 09:09h (S20) 27:35h, 13:19h, 17;36h (Xperia 5ii) (Talk time, Web browsing, Video playback.) And for your lower refresh rate on Sony, this might be the case on Video playback, where it outlasted the Samsung almost 2:1. And you really wanna tell me that their screen alone is so bad that it needs almost 3 Times the energy? Sony would use 25% screen and at 25% anything else The Samsung would be at 75% screen and 25% anything else to explain a Twice as long Video playback. And I don't think it's just the screen.
Yes, this is a good news for me, This time I really like this Sony smartphone camera. I already wait too long for Sony make this kind of specs and features.
I have this phone - got it much cheaper 2nd hand. My small hands love the narrow width without sacrificing battery life, and I haven't noticed that apps look weird. The speakers sound 'boxy' compared with my iPhone 8 plus and I do notice the lack of photographic processing, even though I do have knowledge of raw file editing. I could live without Google button too which I press by accident when on a call. Not perfect, but the size and super reliable battery count for a lot.

Well "in line" depends completely on what people think. Last year's Xperia 1 had amazing features that were offered by no other devices and the same goes for this year. If you don't want any control over the camera beside choosing the lens, this is not the right device for you. It doesn't offer the unrealiatic eye candy that most others do and its output is mostly very natural.
Not quite. If you're looking for a phone that will do the heavy lifting for you in terms of processing, aka give you a Instagram-ready image, this is NOT the phone for you. If you're looking to work a little and endure the struggles that photographers sometimes do, but then get an amazing looking, natural picture (or footage), then there you go.
@@paoloenricoleone Come on, man. Instagram ready? Due to that file compression you can't even see the difference between flagships and mid rangers anymore. In Instagram photos only need to be over saturated and overexposed to get likes. That's why Poco Phone was chosen as the best in a blind comparison that MKBHD did.
Not a Sony fan but you gotta love how Sony isn't falling for the notch or punch hole trend. Sony is probably the classiest phone brand ever, and I'll take this over any iPhone any day.
Warning: If you're considering buying this Sony Xperia 5/1ii iii look elsewhere. This phone is plagued with Fingerprint issues and overheating battery. ASUS ROG 5/6 and ZenFone is the alternative to Sony. Asus also offers a headphone jack but no micro SSD slot.
There's a feature on the Xperia 5 ii (and 1 ii) which I think should be mentioned, as it's so powerful yet underrated. It's called "HS Power Control". It basically allows you to power the phone directly from USB power, instead of the battery. This means that: a) the battery will last longer in the long run because you're putting less strain on it by not charging and using it simultaneously b) the phone generates less heat overall, damaging the battery less and reducing the risk of thermal throttling. Honestly, it's such a good feature that all phones and tablets have, especially those ones that advertise "productivity" or "gaming" usage scenarios. The feature isn't perfect though, because it's for some reason found in the "Game Enhancer" setting, which only works when you open an app that is listed in it. You can add most games and heavy duty apps like benchmark apps, but UA-cam, Chrome, Prime Videos and the camera app etc cannot be added to the list. At least Google Maps can be added, so if you drive around a lot you can keep your phone working with the navigation without heating up your phone whilst it's connected to the cigar charger. Also, the feature is not available whilst using wireless charging (for Xperia 1 ii). The feature really should have been a system wide thing, because I can imagine a use case where someone would like to have very long filming sessions outdoors in the sun using the Cinema Pro app, and this feature would be so useful. Or when USB tethering to a laptop and sharing the mobile network. It's great to see Sony implementing features that are actually useful in smartphones, unlike some "gaming" phones that have excessive RAM and cooling fans etc. Seriously, the Xperia 5 ii might be the best gaming phone to buy right now because of this single feature.
Experia 5 ii is not downgrade of Experia 1 ii it's just lower specs because. Experia 1 ii is the Flagship level Experia 5 ii is a Mid-range to Flagship level Experia 10 is the Mid-range to Flagship level phone.
It's literally just like iPhone 12 und 12mini. 5ii and 1ii are both Highends with the same specs except for the screen. 1II is 60hz 4K for now, 5ii is FHD 120hz. And 10II is a midrange.
You probably have to enable the HDR mode manually still. Sony just doesn’t seem to like any sort of post processing which makes things annoying in some situations as you get blurry or darker shots
Wow. The first phone to come out in a while that I can say that absolutely nailed all of the basics! Definitely on my radar. Edit: Misheard the price tag to be 500€... With the 900 mark, it is well under the radar.
Galaxy S21: 93 hours (adaptive refresh rate) Xperia 5ii has 102hours at 120hz, and 110hours at 60hz) Same sized main camera sensor, Telephoto Sensor is larger on the S21, but the S21 telephoto is only a 1.1 time zoom, while it is 3 times on the Xperia 5II. The Xperia 5II is always giving you darker but colour accurate pictures at night, the S21 brightened up but with more details, raw photo result would be about identical, it's just a software difference. CPU power peak should go to the S21 (on both Exynos and Snapdragon) GPU power peak goes to the Snap 888, the Exynos throttles below the snap 865. Don't worry bro it's part of Sony's strategy to first concentrate on profitable markets (Japan and Europe) and that's working , this year Sony is expecting to have a profit from mobile division for the first time in 4 years , after becoming profitable Sony can also think of expanding to other countries

To Sony: we are watching
It’s great to know what’s other brand’s interesting new phone apart from than Apple and Samsung. In this Xperia 5 ii, the graphic, cpu, bettery life and camera was insane. This phone is litttttt🔥 When we shooting, it was just like we use high-priced production even we just use this phone for a picture or content creator. Thank you for the information and example.
*I'm honestly very happy with my Xperia 1 Mark I but seeing these Versions Mark II I was impressed by the size of the growing and gradual quality and everything sony is doing and we have to congratulate this company that shows to be willing to do the best for the consumer!*

Just to let that sink in, this phone with 4000mah, got the same battery rating, as the 11pro Max with also about 4000mah, but it has the same battery life at 120Hz, meaning this Sony is the first Flagship Android for a long time to beat Apple in energy efficiency.
In the comparison, it's 44% ahead of Samsung with same specs, meaning this Sony's 4000mah equal to Samsung
5760mah.
@@fa14bi-78 that is not how it works
It's because of "probably" an adaptive refresh rate. If their endurance test is automated with less to no screen touch interaction, the refresh rate of Sony may go lower than 60Hz during the test.
@@fa14bi-78 Do you know that the S20 has QHD panel right? Even if Samsung would run the panel on 1080p@120Hz, the panel is still running QHD power consumption, the 1080p only reduces strain on the GPU.
@@3dr14ng4 So you admit that Samsung gave an Pointless screen that consumes way more power?

27:35h, 13:19h, 17;36h (Xperia 5ii)
(Talk time, Web browsing, Video playback.)
And for your lower refresh rate on Sony, this might be the case on Video playback, where it outlasted the Samsung almost 2:1.
And you really wanna tell me that their screen alone is so bad that it needs almost 3 Times the energy?
Sony would use 25% screen and at 25% anything else
The Samsung would be at 75% screen and 25% anything else to explain a Twice as long Video playback.

I understand that at similar price point phones like Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and OnePlus 8 Pro do some things better, but the more compact body and great design, including the bezels I think, make this phone the best phone of the year for me. So, the camera systems in Xperia phones are finally in line with their competitors ?
Not just in line, they are in line by picture quality, and still have their 20FPS burst, 60FPS auto refocus, and 4K 120FPS HDR.
As mentioned in the Video, it loses a lot of it's dynamic range in Portrait mode.

It's pretty rare to see a smartphone with an RGB Notification LED these days! As a galaxy note 4 user, I gotta say I can't miss that in my next phone.
Always love the xperia phone design
Yo that battery manager alone needs to be on every single phone.
There's a feature on the Xperia 5 ii (and 1 ii) which I think should be mentioned, as it's so powerful yet underrated. It's called "HS Power Control".
It basically allows you to power the phone directly from USB power, instead of the battery. This means that:
a) the battery will last longer in the long run because you're putting less strain on it by not charging and using it simultaneously
b) the phone generates less heat overall, damaging the battery less and reducing the risk of thermal throttling.
Nice review. Good phone to have. But I see the main camera still has dynamic range & exposure issues when shooting certain scenes.
You probably have to enable the HDR mode manually still. Sony just doesn’t seem to like any sort of post processing which makes things annoying in some situations as you get blurry or darker shots

How does this compare with Samsung galaxy S21 vanilla model..pls suggest
Galaxy S21: 93 hours (adaptive refresh rate)
Xperia 5ii has 102hours at 120hz, and 110hours at 60hz)
Same sized main camera sensor, Telephoto Sensor is larger on the S21, but the S21 telephoto is only a 1.1 time zoom, while it is 3 times on the Xperia 5II.
The Xperia 5II is always giving you darker but colour accurate pictures at night, the S21 brightened up but with more details, raw photo result would be about identical, it's just a software difference.
CPU power peak should go to the S21 (on both Exynos and Snapdragon)
GPU power peak goes to the Snap 888, the Exynos throttles below the snap 865.
S21 has wireless charging, Xperia 5ii has SD slot and Headphone jack.
