  • Foraging for damsons to make some homemade jam!
Although I picked and used them as damsons they could actually be bullaces! Who knows, either way they made great jam!

It's harvest time again, unfortunately we don't get much in the way of wild plum varieties in the Netherlands. But had a go at Sloe gin and Sloe syrup this weekend, thanks to your videos. Also pressed some apples for juice and cider. Looks like a wonderful jam.

Thanks for sharing Gary, made damson plum jam this evening, followed your recipe, really easy, turned out good, cut back a little on the sugar, Goethe that lovely slightly tart flavour 😊

I’ve always liked canning, pickling, and making jelly. Besides, a blacksmith has to eat!

Fantastic video, I think I'll be making a lot of jam this year, as the small orchard my husband and I planted 3.5 years ago in our garden has really taken off, as well as having a lot of bits of wild hedgerow locally, as we live in a rural village. The wild blackberries in our garden always produce tons more than I know what to do with too, so this year I'm determined to make jam!

Hi Gary, thanks for the video! I'm exploring my new neighbourhood in Haute-Savoie and came across a similar hedgerow... I checked on PlantNet app and sure enough it says Damson / Sloe / Blackthorn. Are they best to harvest now as I see them, or wait to early September? How do I know they are ripe enough? Colour is good. They feel almost ready, some fall off easily when touching. I wouldn't want the jam to be bitter... Can you eat them raw? I've never seen them in my life! 😃
Also, right next to them is what seems to be a rosehip bush! However they are only starting to turn orange and are more green at the moment. Do they "ripen" end August early September usually?
I will try to head yo a library after my walk too!
    Thanks in advance!

@@peace-in-our-lifetime damson and sloe are two different things, you could eat a damson when ripe although they are tart but you definitely don’t want to put a sloe anywhere near your mouth! Sloes I only ever use for sloe gin. I don’t know about France but here late August or early September is usually a good time to harvest them, both sloes and damsons. Sounds like yours are ready if they are slightly soft to touch and fall off easily, the jam wouldn’t be bitter but might be slightly runny. It’s all a bit hit and miss. I don’t know much about rosehips although I have always wanted to make rosehip syrup.

Do Damson berries grow on the spike? I can't tell the difference between Damson sloe and the other ones that look the same!
I've watched loads of videos but they aren't clear enough for me to clearly identify which are which!
I picked berries yesterday and today made jam but I'm not certain what kind of jam I've made 😑

Sloes grow on the bush with spikes. Damsons and bullaces are much bigger

You are as good at foraging as you are at forging. Guess you only had to add an a, eh?

It’s too thick to go through and you would loose it’s body and end up with a thin juice.
