Hi Archie, thank you for another great video. Have you considered staggering the two kilns such that you begin one, and then four or five days later you begin the second kiln. This way, you may have a finished batch of kiln dried logs every six or seven days. What are your thoughts on that idea? Keep up the great work!
Wild idea exhaust the air from a kiln 5 days into drying through the second kiln…..then after 5 days the second kiln becomes the primary kiln and you exhaust its air through the freshly filled kiln one. Very wet logs would get up to temperature and probably even start to dry even with the humid air… might save you a day or so and increase the regularity?
we did exactly this on the 2 timber kilns at a sawmill i used to work at......once we were on the final drying on one kiln and had gone to once thru/non reticulation the exhaust air was fed into the second kiln to preheat it and begin drying it in a slower more gentle manner.....this was saw timber kiln so the drying was done a a lot more slowly to stop it checking but the theory would work perfectly on a firewood kiln as well.

Having spent 5 years doing firewood as a bolt on to the main business I've just invested in a new processor and deck at apf and now ramping up production. Having not seen all your videos yet, do you process straight into your bulk bags for seasoning or are you part seasoning in ibcs then transferring to bulk bags through the log cleaner ? Ofcourse, your "touchless firewood" production is unmatchable from a "one man show" perspective, and your USA audience at that time was "behind the times" and insisted processing firewood the old way. Nice to catch up - but a repeat at 24:50 of the earlier section at 6:10 ... I would love you to do a little piece on how you do the editing. How do you 'label' the segments? What's your system? What software do you use? You've already shared a little bit about the camera hardware you use, which is interesting. I love the drone shots, the camera-follow thing, the time lapse and your voice-overs. Love from Compost John in York, currently chopping up, splitting and stacking Eucalyptus from a client's garden. I get paid to take it away!! lol
It's very interesting watching your videos. DPF just keep an eye on your engine oil as I had the dpf light keep coming on my dmax and the injector had gone which was put fuel into the engine. Hope it not this. One day I will make a firewood kiln like yours.😊

That’s! Some of the high labour products we sometimes buy in if we get behind. Like the kindling or log nets but I don’t think I would ever sell the machine so I can do it myself. Regarding ibcs… some and some I can get lorry loads of just cages but sometimes I can get them with the plastic in from local farmers for next to nothing
Instead of running both kilns together have you thought about staggering them, so when ones 75% finished start trickling heat into the second to start getting the high levels of moisture out of the timber
I have the same issue always trying to get ahead with slabs air drying so it spends less time in the kiln, I am getting the slabs down to 8% though much less than firewood. If I let the slabs air dry for 3 months it only take a week in the kiln instead of 3 weeks with green slabs.
@ average log moisture is around 13%. Middle being 20% and outside 6% or below (tester only goes down to 6) so add the 2 together and divide by 2. A lot of companies will aim for a 20% average moisture of the log 😬👍🏼
reference the auto regen, you should still be able to drive the grafter while it is on a auto regen, i used to drive my Volvo A30 articulated dump truck while it was regennning, bear in mind that the volvo dump truck is approx 18 tons empty with a "official payload" of 30 tons ,but as most are loaded until it falls off the side this can be up to 40 tons of load depending on what you are hauling,even with 30+ tons of rock it still regenned while being driven, i would definately investigate as why you were given the impression you couldnt drive the grafter during a regen program, seems a like a bit of bad advice in my experience, Keep them coming Archie & woody :)
Re the two kilns, why don’t you fill the other one whilst the first is cooking, and switch the heat over when it is dry. Maximise the use of the burner
We have a fleet of Isuzu 3.5T trucks, you don't need to pull over for it to regen, just don't turn the engine off and drive as normal. It'll complete the regen without issue.
Great video my friend.. are you renting or do you own that property? Is there room for more concrete? Also wholesale customers pay less but the cheque is much bigger.. don't know all the details but if they don't effect your ability to expand your door to door then keep it going as long as you can.. cause once they are gone it will be difficult to get them back
hey brother, hear me out...i hope this idea is good and will speed things up for you... on green machine (lol aka the hulk) what if u ran that wood that comes out, up a different conveyor, into the palax final sorta ( sorry dont know the names that good) and from the final sorta it runs up your current conveyor that you have on the hulk into totes? so basically it would be set up in a big U formation inside your shop? alot less handling...if you can decipher this lol i feel it would be a killer set up, even more so then the current one
not saying ur current set up stinks by any means....but u have that palax final sorta...use it in a way that would more automate the process further :)
Yes I have thought about this. I would like to use the roller cleaner more but I also don’t want it to be a pain when I need to clean/bag kiln dried logs. I thought about putting the finger cleaner directly on the roller cleaner then using the convayor off the roller cleaner to give me more length off the factory
@oakfarmfirewood oh so even if you ran it through the roller cleaner coming off the splitter 200 it wouldn't be clean enough to just kiln dry it? At that point it should be separated out just like when u pull it out of the kiln to run through the roller cleaner...I could be missing something though lol I'm old....but hey hopefully I didn't wake u up...I just realized it's 8pm here lol I thought i was onto something 😂🤷
Getting some wood in. That DPF is getting tiresome. I've got one on my kubota tractor. Always wants to regenerate at the most inopportune time. I would really do some careful analysis of the numbers before dropping wholesale and replacing it with increased domestic sales. Make sure the "extra" money earned isn't being completely consumed by the extra costs associated with domestic deliveries. Bags, fuel, maintainence, and most importantly, time. Does it mean adding an employee and vehicle to keep up with the increased deliveries? Business things to consider. Too many people do "uber" math and ignore the hidden costs of doing business. You seem to have a proper grasp of those costs but well worth a real look.

Some of the smaller jappo trucks require you to stop some just reduce power when they regen....not a problem if your empty but not a lot of fun when your loaded close to max

this is a good idea! will need to work out ductwork

Yes I did used to do this. Say on a 8 day cycle on day 4 start the other kiln

Get the dpf deleted all that emission control garbage is a fix forced regeneration sitting reving a engine to clean the soot particles its a joke
