I was lucky enough to get to interview Sir John Key, New Zealand’s Former Prime Minister, for the 3rd time this year.
In this episode, John and I focused on decision-making during crisis. During his time in office, John was faced with the Christchurch earthquakes, which caused widespread damage across Christchurch and killed 185 people. John was open about how he navigated making decisions during this time, and how we can all learn to make decisions under pressure.
John also spoke about politics, the 2023 Elections, and AI.
Please share this episode with everyone you know. We could all benefit from learning how to make decisions under pressure!

#SirJohnKey #National #decisionmaking #leadership
There is a contradiction in JKs lived experience and his right wing philosophy. He grew up in a state house provided by the state which also allowed him to get a middle class education that he would not have have received without state intervention. His university education was also paid by the state from which enabled his career. In government he undermined, underfunded and deconstructed those social systems that provided the foundation for his success.
You might be onto something or you might possibly be way off course. Fundamentally, do you believe John has tried to do the right thing in his leadership?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial According to his own ego he thinks he has done the right thing. Primarily because he doesn’t think the assistance he received from the state impacted his life. He effectively pulled up the ladder behind him. His attitude that people don’t need assistance from the state is grounded in denial and arrogance.
Why do you feel that he outright believes that people don’t need any assistance?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial he cut welfare whilst he was in government. He also states it during the talk.
Was it measured and appropriate though!?
What a brilliant interview ... loved it and my admiration for John Key is even more after listening to this podcast. James you are doing an amazing job👏🏾
Thanks so much - I’m delighted you enjoyed it. I’ve had JK on the show a number of times Ans always enjoyed his manner and intellect.
Have you listened to the Chris Luxon interview I did right before the election?
I recall watching an interview with JK in February or March of 2020 where he said he wouldn't have done what Jacinda did and locked down everything. Now he's saying everything Jacinda did right is because of National and every she did wrong was because of her incompetency. I never put much stock into the idea of men taking credit for women's ideas, but he is literally taking credit for Jacinda's success. I disagree with the accidental PM as well. Jacinda was a new brand for the labour party and she bought her own style into the leadership that was initially well received by the public, really emphasising compassion and inclusivity in leadership. It certainly lost its appeal after 2020 with Labour falling short on producing results for the big ticket items and really misreading the public on the cultural policies. However she did take labour from being unelectable to winning two elections, and she did get a majority, something JK never managed. Perhaps he should stop taking credit and start taking notes. Luxon has tried to brand himself as JK 2.0 and lets go back to the good old days of the 2010's, but this hasn't exactly been a success either. He's not renewed the national party the way Jacinda did the labour party. We voted labour out, not National in, and few people were enthusiastic about there options during the last election. JK was successful, but the world and NZ has moved on from the 2010's. Luxon really needs to set himself apart from JK and portray an image of a government taking NZ forwards, not back to the good old days but with Peter's taking so many of the headlines in the last few months, Luxon may really struggle to get his own brand out there.
I’m pretty confident that Chris will be just fine. What makes you think he won’t?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Jacinda was criticised for just being a good communicator, but communication is half the job. Luxon struggles with message discipline and often poorly phrases his points. Unlike Key's government, where the coalition parties only bought a few seats, National's coalition partners are much more prominent and Seymour and Peters are both skilled in their handling of the media. Luxon has gotten better in the past year, but I still think he's got a long way to go. Sort of similar to the UK. Starmer is almost certainly going to be their next PM, but theres not as much enthusiasm for him as there was got Blair. I listened to the sharsies podcast with Bill English and he pointed out this is was not a big ideas campaign. National largely ran on the premise of reversing a lot of what labour did. And once the cuts to public sector are felt in daily life, as well as ACT and NZF pulling the government further right, National risk losing the center vote. This will depend on whether or not Labour can refresh themselves over the next couple of years. Looking at what has been happening with other countries, such as France, Germany and Aussie, it maybe that the traditionally smaller parties grow and the centre parties continue to decline or even disappear altogether. Either way, I think National is far from a sure bet.
Jacinda should be jailed! She is pure evil!
Nothing really improved for the average person in nz under Key.
I remember observing his behaviour on parliament tv and he seemed to prefer being a stand up comedian rather than answer serious questions seriously.
Can't believe he ok'd spending almost 40 mil on a referendum to change the flag smh.
Just my thoughts
Thanks Dan, really appreciate your thoughts. What’s one positive thing you admired about him?
He left
🤣 Ronald you’re a laugh a minute
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial If I may but in here. "What was positive"? 1) He was a man. Refreshing after that gynocentric socialist crowd before. 2) He enjoyed the job and was a natural boss albeit with boyish mannerisms from time to time. 3) He was a good communicator. 4) Guided the country through the GFC pretty well. That was a tough scary time. He might have borrowed too much, our standard of living was propped up with 300 Mil a day? 'The American way. Not qualified to judge that. I don't think BE was happy?
@JamesLaughlinOfficial Hi James, thanks for the reply.
One thing I always admire with anyone who is already wealthy, is their decision to enter politics and run a country with all the stress and sleep deprivation that comes with that role.
If I had millions I'd just be travelling the world and enjoying my time, not volunteering for more headache...😊
Superb, thank you.
You’re welcome BanjoPete 😊 What did you enjoy most about the episode?
Home-grown vegetables did not appeal to him and deemed illegal.. telling anyone to not sustain their own family, you don't last long anywhere.
What’s the story about the veggies?
🤣 🤣 🥕
The accidental prime minister. And what an accident she was. Left as a rat jumping from the sinking ship.
When I bring her on the show , do you have a question you'd like us to ask her?
Great interview.
I see Sir John Key in a different light.
Pretty straight-up and very interesting I thought.
I’m really glad you enjoyed it Stephen. I also had several people in the LIVE audience say exactly the same thing.
What do you think our new coalition leaders need to consider to lead the country successfully?
Loved this interview! His re-enactment of the Irish accent was hilariously good!
He had me in stitches and it beats my sad attempt at a kiwi accent. What did you most enjoy about the interview?
Juvenile at best
When you cant think of anything else to say, make fun of the Irish in a stereotypical way.
James Laughlin, you should get Mr Netanyahu on here. He does not seem to know the definition of the word 'genocide'. Get him on with John Key. Mr Key thinks children never seem to grow up. Well there will be thousands of Palestinian children who will never grow up but apparently Mr Netanyahu thinks they are Hamas freedom fighters so that's ok according to him.
STOP THE GENOCIDE ON GAZA now. This is a deliberate zionist man made disaster killing children, women and men.
Interesting that Mr Kay mentions Chanel. As a person with a Jewish mother he should know that Coco Chanel had a lover who was a nazi. Moreover, she supported people who agreed people like Mr Keys grandparents should be exterminated. May they rest in peace.
The point about aussie companies ganging up on us is very significant.
Correct, I have always wondered for the reasons why.
What do you think drives them to do so?
Brendon - it’s strange right? Do you think there’s something bigger at play?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial I think perhaps patriotism and the "devil you know"?
Fantastic interview and so so insightful! Also, what is in JK's cup? He's on fire today!
Thanks Max! I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was a morning session we had in Christchurch …
Nothing more than some caffeine in that cup ☕️
What did you enjoy most about the interview?
Loved the overall insight in how JK and his team handled the CHCH earthquakes, as well as his stance on international affairs (ie. China). Great stuff! @@JamesLaughlinOfficial
Thanks Max, it’s always fun having JK along to our events. Where are you based?
There is few successful businessmen who would want to engage in politics as John Key did . All American Al.
He really did step into the gauntlet! What was your favourite takeaway from the episode?
I think you meant 'with' not 'as'
key's has always impressed with his intellect , down to earth guy next door was never how I would have thought of him ,,, how wrong I was ,,
Thanks for sharing that Simon. When I interview him next, what would you like me to ask him?
Key couldn't give a flying fart about the truth
29 died because of his govt.
SCF who was the real crook in that
Get some guts to support the biggest number of drone strikes from any US president to help Israel
by his Hawaiian neighbor Barry O'bama the IRA trained terrorist yeah a joke like Key made of nz with his international grandstanding
Well he was brought up in a state house, his father died when he was 8 & his mum is a survivor of the holocaust so I guess that's where his "down to earthness" has come from.. not a privileged upbringing by any means..
Great candid interview with Sir John. Made me smash the subscribe button.
That means a lot!! Thank you so much. Is there anybody you’d like to see me interview in 2024?

You didn't mention Jacinda who absolutely screwed the country.
Thanks again James for another great interview. I could listen to Sir John all day long. The combo of you and him James is a really great mix. Thanks James.
Thank you so much - I really appreciate it. When I next interview him, what question would you like me to ask him?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial thanks for the reply. The question I would like for Sir John would be ( rather unpolitical ) - " what 3 people past or present would you invite for dinner and why them?".
Ohhhh! Great question - and I will definitely ask him that on our next interview. Who would the three leaders past or present that you’d invite to dinner?
I listen to Shonkey when I wish to bring up my breakfast.
@@michaellee9975 and yet here you are?!
I find this extremely interesting! I greatly admire John Key as he is a highly inspiring leader to me. Thank you so much!
Absolutely our pleasure. What did you enjoy most about the video?
Voted for him twice and believe he done an OK job for NZ, but he shouldnt slag Trump without understanding the human distruction done to the average USA citizen. Dont understand? Google "Victor Davis Hanson" and Key should listen to him as well, he might learn something too.
Thanks KiwiBoss - what inspired you to vote for him?
Can't wait for you to interview Jacinda Ardern. You'll be able to discuss style over substance.
I really look forward to interviewing her one day. And I know she will have wisdom to share. What question would you like me to ask her?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficialwhere they got the science alot of us followed ...only to find out it was greatest upward wealth transfer EVER- 1000YRS of quantitative easing in one hit.
@JamesLaughlinOfficial
Certainly. I know she has a degree in media however could you please ask her why she constantly panders to the camera.
Immediately after the Christchurch mosque killings she met victims whilst wearing a hijab. If there'd been a mass shooting of Mexicans in the US and Donald Trump turned up wearing a sombrero he would have been roundly condemned as being a cringeworthy populist and rightly so.
You may also ask her why she shouldn't be considered a cringeworthy populist albeit, unlike Trump, from the left spectrum of politics rather than the right.
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Ask Jacinda how she transitioned from having never managed any staff to having to manage an entire Government.
Alot of NZs population now despise Jacinda because she controlled the Media to ensure her incompetence was never exposed.
It was quite obvious that she had no ability as a manager/leader. Doing deals with minority parties (The Maori Party, TMP) to maintain control of the house. (Was obvious Jacinda was a Jeckal and Hyde kinda person with no ability to take constructive criticism)
Please never interview her, as she won't be as honest as the likes of John Key.
Many thanks.
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial I think the one thing that'll plague her with the masses for years is the mandate protest handling, questions around this topic would be most intriguing. For example, does she regret labelling the protestors as "Nazis" during the initial first few days? Does she regret the handling of these protestors with the stance of refusing to talk to the people, to the point of blacklisting politician's that attended (e.g Winston Peters whom won his court case over the matter). There was a lot of wrongs here, and this was essentially the turning tide of her political existence - this topic is overdue probing.
Oh comments are allowed now. How kind...
Do you remember JK's throat slitting in parliament? No , they wiped it from the parliament record just prior to the election. He is just another johnny come and johnny go, with no improvement for Kiwis. Same old.
I don’t control if your comments are allowed or not. Comments have always been allowed on this video. Perhaps youtube didn’t like some of your words??
What did you like about JK? Anything?
Absolutely brilliant interview. Something positive.
Thanks Carolyn. I’ve always enjoyed having JK on the show. When I next interview him, what would you like me to ask him? 🎄
Why does he think some people don’t understand or have a clue what Labour has done to destroy this country in 6 years & are bashing National only after 2 weeks. We have stopped watching/listening to anything RNZ as the bias is so bad and watch independent Board casters.😊
Loved his answer to your last question.
Carolyn - I’m delighted that you and so many others watch and follow my show. I don’t have a bias to push which makes it easy for me to let my guests just tell me their truths
It really hits the mark eh?
Well till now he was the worst....now I think Chris wins
What makes Chris worse in your opinion?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial the fact he has no control over the right wing cookers he has chosen to go into a coalition with....
The coalition is going to pose such huge challenges and obstacles. Do you think it will bear some positive fruit too?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial not at all....he is there to change the rules to suit his own pocket and that of his donors....oh and to get a knighthood.....he doesn't care about the truth... those struggling....or as he calls them bottom feeders.....he has nothing but undoing all the good and progress made( even though he said labour did nothing ) .... he'll drag us back to where jk left us.....I have spoken to teachers doctors and Police who say they aren't letting them have their way without a fight..... He ran a dishonest campaign and it seems he has started his leadership the same way.....he has no back bone or leadership skills.....
Did he actually call them bottom feeders in that context?
He did a great piece with kiwi China reporter- Andy Boreham on kiwi sino relations
Should I check it out?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Yeah, for sure mate, China cop alot of American propaganda, but key was pretty bang on- Paul keeting too Australian former prime minister. I've dug deep and it's all lies with a sliver of truth.
Tell us again about those Mossad agents in Christchurch during the quake and your cosy conversation with your mate Bibsy Netanyahu. It would be great to learn the truth about that … or is it still not in New Zealand’s interest.
Thanks for your input Bruce. What’s the mossad agent story? Another conspiracy?
John Key made his friends richer, made more people homeless in NZ than any other PM in history, silly thing about it is he got a night hood for it, you can't allow 90,000 people in the country in a 12 month period and not expect it to have a negative impact. If 10% of those that came in were children that's another 9,000 kids to teach/school, plus the impact on health care that we have never recovered from.
Thanks for your thoughts Austin. Is there anything positive you can comment on that he did?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficialhe was my childhood prime minister
That’s cool. What did you think of him when you were a child?
Are you trying to be funny, try asking him about the housing crisis that he created, O that's right what housing crisis, ask him how much the hose prices rose while he was PM , and yes i do own my own home brought before prices got out of reach for the average NZer. @@JamesLaughlinOfficial
Totally fair to have that opinion Austin. But is there any positive aspect you can comment on about his leadership?
Remember when all the banks didn't pay their tax few years back. They wanted to negotiate how much tax they should pay. Do you and I get that opportunity. Certainly not. Corrupt them mates of his.
Why do you think they had different privileges than us? Is it because of the sheer size?
Well theres a turn around we didn't think we'd see.. lol😊
Is that a positive thing?
I once did a bit of ambush journalism on Key...and while I actually regret that, Key doesn't really fill me with confidence in this interview. He comes across jovial and normal, but he's flat out wrong on a mumber of levels. He has what I often call, the Westerncentric sunglasses. He moves in the circles of people who pat each other on the back.
Key is utterly wrong on the points he made about Putin and Russia. Putin publically stated on many occasions that he had no desire to entire Ukraine and no desire to attempt to recreate The Soviet Union. Putins main red line was that Ukraine remain neutral. But no, the West could not leave it alone. They had to keep pushing and poking Russia. The U.S funded and organised the Kiev Maidan, that outsted the Russia friendly PM. That was a coup instigated by the U.S. The same U.S that almost certainly bombed Nordstream. Russia is winning this war with only about 20% of it's capacity dedicated to the task. Ukraine is not going to last. What Key does not tell us, is that the IMF and Blackrock are running Ukraine. The same financial crowd that John Key owes his allegiance to. Key is just as smarmy as he always was. These ex leaders love to prance around on book tours and speaking tours after their time of running countries for the financial overlords. Ardern is no different. She acted all sympathetic, but she was a fraud and a lot of NZ have finally woken up to that fact. When people get given knighthoods, it is because they served their masters well.
Something I did agree with him on, is the points about racial segregation and less Govt v personal freedoms. The Maori Party today might as well be a domestic terrorism group. They are mental. We should be one NZ with one set of laws for everyone. But Keys comments about Ardern are way off. She's a narcissist of the highest order and a bloody maniac. There is no way we should have had her as a leader. She said, yes we are creating a two tier society, while grinning from ear to ear. She also said trust us because the Govt is your single source of truth. What the heck!!!. That vaccine was also not safe or effective, but it's the narrative that was constantly blurted out. Ardern, Hipkins and others must answer to the NZ public for their part to play in this grand deception. Thank God she is gone.
Thanks for your deep insights. What’s this journalism piece you speak of? I’d love to read it.
It was years ago when John Key came to our town. It wasn't a written piece, but a video. I used to be more activist. Now I am less like that. I guess you could say I was in the old Left and even though each time I do a Political Compass test and it shows me slightly left of center on the Libertarian side, I remain sympathetic to todays right wing conservative types. I never went "woke". The principle issue I approached John Key about, was the private nature of our currency creation mechanism. Even today with a lot more awareness, that system is not going to change in a hurry. I'd say that it has to come down by itself in it's right time. @@JamesLaughlinOfficial
Thanks a million for sharing that
🙏
I agree with what you say about Russia not wanting a war and NAto / UsA forcing them into it, Jacinda being a and extreme narcissist , and the Maori party being basically domestic terrorists and mad dedicated to taking control of NZ by Maori for Maori and no one else. It’s clear that these
Maori radicals expect the majority to fund their insane plans - what could possibly go wrong ???

What was your biggest takeaway?
Pity Key didn't have those sentiments also. He didn't give a toss
its all bout the $$$ its always has been with Key yep he's a fukin legend
Do you think $ is the biggest driver for him??
Shocking statement at 1:04:50 and even more bizarre that it was chosen as the thumbnail for the video. Firstly, the plural for Māori is Māori. "The Maoris" is archaic and racist. He's referring to the Kermadec sanctuary proposal which iwi organisations voted against. Key's nerve to claim he was doing his best to be an eco-saviour and was blocked by 'the maori's' is so wild--he's relying on his audience's complete disregard for the treaty this nation was founded on and what governance should look like.
Thanks for your thoughts on this Sam. Do you truly believe John was trying to pull the wool over people eyes?
Everything is "racist" to people like you.
Keys talks like a real white NZer....you know the ones who got NZ to where it is today....in a place we could afford treaty settlements
Do you think there’s a common ground where we can all agree on things?
As an entertainer JK is a pleasure, but the humour masks a shallowness of real political fortitude and original thought. IMO! Nine years of opportunity to advance NZ's fragile and uncompetitive economy in favour of steady as she goes, by the master helmsman. And so we ended up with THAT MOB for the following six years!
Thanks Murray, really appreciate your insights. How do you feel Luxon will do??
eww worst prime minister ever.
What did you dislike?
Others would agree and also disagree. What did you dislike most about Labour?
Thanks John for the price we are paying for your coalition with the Maori party ie sending Sharples to the UN to sign the Declaration of Indigenous Rights . Ta very much .
Thanks George - what would you have done differently?
Winnie knew. Maori haven't been paying attention. Perhaps they to are captured by Modernity and its romance to a time that passed away.
Yes exactly John key sucks no one should forget about what he did.
For God's sake educate yourself and research about Te Tiriti. Maori never signed their own sovereignty away, they embraced the English and were gracious enough to share everything and teach them how to survive and thrive and both lived, worked and flourished side by side. They also had their own language both oral and written and Pakeha had to learn it to survive. Then the Crown invaded the country with their mindset of eliteness. Don't give Keys credit for your dismay, Maori took him to court and they won. They will do the same to this new Govt and anyone who dares to do the same to them ever again. Given that Iwi contribute billions and billions of dollars into our economy now they have amazingvresources, its not guns against spears its a new rising and its about time. Tihei Mauri Ora.
Do you think there's any positives about John Key that you could highlight too though?
Pas au dessus de l'échelle de Richter, Sir John! L'échelle de Richter va de 1 à 9. Donc, sur l'échelle, pas au dessus ou en dehors.

I was quite young when John Key was PM, but all I remember is him running away from his own administration when things went belly up. Then, we had Bill English for a few weeks, who did the same thing. Based on this, I find his views on leadership and criticism of other leaders quite ironic.
But it was okay for Ardern to run away as soon as she realised she would not be re-elected after less than two terms, remembering that Key completed almost three terms.
After 8 years in power you might add.

Politicians who openly lie or dodge legitimate questions should be stood down. Media. Should be responsible for what they portray. If I behaved like this in my everyday life I'd be in jail or on a list.. the reliability of these institutions are being pulled into question far too often.. do we flip a coin for public trust? Who should we trust? And yet we vote based on trust.. it's a massive thing to talk about.. I'm only a scratch in the paint job
@@danielcox1602 I generally agree with you. I think this election of any I can remember has had the most lies and dodged questions from the party that ended up with the most votes.
Nationals tax plan wasn’t thought out or funded, but they lied and said it was. In every single interview they refused to elaborate. Every economist said it was fubar and inflationary.
This also just scratches the surface on the number of lies they told by omission this campaign. It really bothered me.
Labour also do this but in my opinion the left side of the political isle tends to have much greater respect for the govt institution and parliamentary process.

Hi David, thanks so much sharing your story. Leadership is all about the people. John and Jacinda both love people, that is unquestionable. I really hope National helps you with your vision. Where in NZ are you based?

What a Brilliant Man John is. Love listening to him.
Thanks Ameya, I’ve enjoyed having him on the show a number of times now. When I next interview him a what would you like me to ask him?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Next interview, I would like to hear more about the not so good events in his political career. Drill down further into controversial events such has Tppa protests, novopay, GST increase, flag referendum, maori relationships, union relationships etc and how he tackled those challenges on apolitical and a personal level.
Also, I would also like to hear his thoughts about business with India, and what steps NZ needs to take to have a prosperous trade relationship with them.
I understand some of those items were covered in this interview, but i would like to get a bit more granular detail on the above items.
Fair point Ameya, I’ll endeavour to go deeper on that side of things. John is always open to chat about the bad things as well as the good.
Ex Goldman Sachs Banker what more can i say
Incorrect - he didn’t work at Sachs. It was Merrill Lynch. Anyways, what are you implying?
Thanks Robin.

Thanks! Room for improvement on the English …. Maybe it’s because I’m Irish 😉
What was your takeaway from the video?
Must be fun being you 😊
Most definitely 😊
My comment wasn't directed at you James 🙂 Don't you just love it when people feel the need to correct others. Great video btw 🙂
Totally! I get it constantly 🤣 have the most epic weekend
John key was my favourite prime minister, if he ever wanted the job again idd be the first to vote for him
You and many others, that's for sure. What did you admire most about his leadership?
It was notable the Mr Key said 'there is no housing crisis' (in New Zealand ), in the middle of a serious housing crisis.
Why is the heading "The Maori took me to court" when that was a few second comment he made in this interview and doesn't explain why they had to take him to court?? They won legally however he goes on to take accolades for helping them 😡. Says it all really
Thanks Lorraine - I’m glad you enjoyed the interview
@robintamihere4550 yes absolutely correct, takes the accolades for helping Maori, however he only did that as he lost not because he wanted to. One wealthy businessman to another one now who was/is mentored by John Keys and look what Luxon and his new Govt are trying to do Maori AGAIN in NZ creating more of a divide than I've ever seen
The Irish having been rioting over immigration, and New Zealand has record immigration
Is it a good thing for NZ?
Mass immigration to New Zealand has side effects on infrastructure, housing, cost of living. When you bring record numbers of people to New Zealand you need,to build hospitals, schools, roads, police sation ect.Mass immigration has always been a quick sugar fix for our economic problems by our politicians. New Zealand now is one of the most expensive countries in the world and now is a rental nation, which has lead to the greatest inequality in my life time in New Zealand. With Mass immigration comes different ideologicals and that has lead to many deaths in the country .
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial I not against immigration to New Zealand, but when it turns your country into a rental nation because the average young and Maori in New Zealand will not be able to afford to own a place to live in the future .And you can understand why his is acceptable to our politicians when you find out that 75% of them are property investors which is the highest in world.
That’s definitely concerning to look at it with that lens on. Do you think Luxon can change things?
I get it. I hope my child will be able to afford a home when he’s older
John Key bought in bank BAIL-INS, that Labour never had a chance to reverse
Paula, do you think labour had the capability of doing that
Pakeha need to keep the word Maori out of their mouths INCLUDING DonKeys
Why’s that?
He came up and spoke to us in a cafe. It was kinda funny cos he couldnt get in the door. It was locked and not being used. Our table was in front of it. When he got in he came up to us and joked about hoping the media didnt see that. Then he chatted while his minders got his coffee. He was just a normal guy and asked us what we did.
Aside from this....please stop adding aotearoa to our countrys name.
I have to agree, he is a normal human who has the ability to connect with others and enjoy good conversations.
Why does the word Aotearoa frustrate you?
Its not the name of our country. @@JamesLaughlinOfficial
Some might disagree though, right?
If you're left, you think he's shit. If you're on the right, you'll think he's the greatest for NZ. On the balance for the country, every PM brings good and bad. Certainly NZ has some big dollops of lack of housing and home ownership that need to be solved, the need to make a country a home ownership country with hardly any homelessness. That's the basic principle that will make NZ great, regardless of what colour.
Steve, it’s nice to have someone see a balanced side of things. Refreshing in fact!! How do you see the coalition govt succeeding in moving the country towards more prosperity
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial You’re probably well alert to the politics NZ. Though 3 party, it’s harder for Luxon to get his end goals perfect; he’s ran AirNZ, great profitability, customer and world reviews while there; he will achieve what he sets out to do though not 100% due Peters/Seymour. And National MPs are super hard working and Luxon even more so (used to get $2.4m, now probably will take little or no pay). See the good today also with the huge Maori protest in NZ. Maori Shane Jones just batted and clucked away the huge theatrics like an annoying fly. And Maori Seymour (supposedly of high chieftain Iwi stock) gave his great answer unselfishly with no regard of any profits to himself: that all N Zealanders are treated equally is the best for this country. Don’t many feel like you want to run with them. Don’t ask John Campbell though.
Spot on Steve. I hope equity and equality are moved towards. Our little country needs it.
Great prime minister
Many would most certainly agree! What did you enjoy most about him as PM?
So interesting! Especially the AI info, although I'm more fatalistic about it. And the chicken non-food comment - disturbing stuff! Great anecdotes, and this is from one who didn't vote his direction at the time.
What other former world leader is so open, and down to earth to speak so off the cuff like that in this forum - can't be that many?
You’re so right. Most former world leaders are a closed shop. I deeply enjoy the chats that John and I have on a regular basis.
When I next interview him, what would you like me to ask him?
Sorry, 'Mr Key'.
What exactly are you ‘sorry’ for?
Sir Donkey self appointed knight
Your username spiked my interest. Are you NZ SAS or former military?
Rumor has it, James replies to every single comment 😂
😂 Not quite every comment, but whilst I just have a small number of subscribers I am able to still engage with the vast majority of comments. If the channel grows that will become an impossibility. But whilst it’s still in its infancy, I can get amongst it and learn firsthand from viewers what they like, dislike and how they truly feel.
Who would you like to see me interview in 2024?
Wow John you did so well in Christchurch, that the place still doesn't work properly and people are still living in unfixed houses after all these years. You bailed on NZ when you got your feet through another $$$ making door.
That’s an interesting perspective amanda. Why doesn’t CHCH work in your opinion?? 🧐
Liquifaction was acknowledged by most in some areas but when John spoke of paying home owners out for the houses that could not be rebuilt, it was not paid on government valuation, it was not paid on the rates value. It was a pittance that wasn't nearly even close to helping people start again. The people of NZ make things work because we have too.
I’m not sure that’s a fair summation across the board. Many people did ok on that front … in fact some slumlords took advantage of the situation.
What would have been the ultimate scenario post earthquake in your opinion?
Thanks for that. I have always admired John Key's honesty and philosophy.
You, and many others Terry. What did you enjoy most about the interview?
@JamesLaughlinOfficial.
Liked how John would sack the share broker's who throu their phones. Not the mentality you want when the shit hits the fan. It says a lot about his character.
He is a traitor!!
He’s methodical and thoughtful and has a great sense of humour
What makes you say that DW?
He is absolutely correct that Jacinda didn't want the job. She said that on the radio in March 2017 and in NEXT magazine in June 2017, citing her anxiety about letting people down.
She stepped up and did it any way. Some would call it courage, others might say differently. Certainly our international friends seem to hold Jacinda in high regard - but mixed feelings here at home
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Yes. But she didn't enjoy it at all. Forced to take the Leadership thinking it was a six week gig, planning to do other things.
All in all though, do you feel she did a good job?
No. She had no idea about finances or what was required from leadership. She described herself as a perfectionist which is not a good trait of a leader. You need to be a realist, practical etc
Thanks for sharing that. Perfectionists in my experience tend to overthink and are indecisive
Key is a legend.pleasure to have personally met him

Longtack - great feedback! It's back to school for me and the team. Did you enjoy anything about the interview?
Good on some things, but his political world view showing through. For instance, it shows a fundamental lack of understanding and empathy for Māori and the same bias of the privileged. That same biased viewpoint is coming through strongly in the new coalition Govt, one that is sounding more like the Trump administration based on recent comments in the media
Thanks Malcolm. What actions do you see from the new govt that remind you of Trumps administration?
@JamesLaughlinOfficial things like attacking the role of the media and blatent lying such as the media bribery claim and number of smoking outlets in Northland that were repeated on numerous occasions. Honestly, looks like they'll need to be fact checked regularly, just as was the norm for the Trump administration 🙄
Malcolm, I can’t imagine it getting anything like the Trump administration- that was a hot mess. But we do need checks and balances. Will Labour be effective as an opposition party??
Well john key..... he walked before finishing his term.... thats not a winner
That’s an interesting perspective. What makes you feel that he’s not a winner because he stepped down when he did?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficialFear. He didn't walk , he ran.

I think so many people would vote for Trump. Jeremy, what would make you vote for him?
JK an accountant, economist and trader. Jacinda Ardern was behind the counter in a fish and chip shop. No wonder JK delivered a 'Rock star economy' ams Jacinda failed miserably!
Do you think JK would get the nod if he ran for office again?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Without a doubt. Luxon seems to be off to a good start but time will tell and he has a hell of a lot to fix before he can forward. Labour took NZ backwards and now it's time to rebuild.
I'm noticing a trend here. No smart young people commenting. Just boomers who've lost the ability to keep up in this ever changing world.

@@JamesLaughlinOfficial I called the English language an it.
😂 sorry for my confusion. Being Irish, my English isn’t the greatest
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial No need to apologise. There are many in Aotearoa who struggle with English. Hopefully, with it becoming an official language investment in teaching it in schools may happen. Who knows? Maybe one day those who have been disadvantaged by their only language not being official may learn, with help of course, about the possessive apostrophe - the difference between their, there, they're. I hope so.
Oh, and thank you too, to the Libertarian party for telling me which order languages should go in.
It’s exciting that schools will have to teach one hour of the core and essential subjects every day - basics done well makes a significant impact on social and economic outcomes over the long term
This guy, Key, sold out NZers to the Maori elite. along with his mate Finlayson. Result was the He Puapua road map!! The one the New Government is stopping very soon. It was brought in by Labour/Te Pati as result of Key's action with this UN signing

@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Good Morning Sir. I've not had time to review the Sir John Key video as I said. From recollection, the main issue I had was Keys view that Putin wishes to re-establish the USSR. This is clearly false. I make a point of watching Putin's speeches and I've read dozens of editorials and opinion pieces and I've yet to hear that claim. This is a case of the West needing a bogey-man The same goes for Lavrov..the Foreign Minister. (If I had to name three world leaders who I would consider Statesman these days... Worst PM we ever had. The gini coefficient hit all time highs under him. Economic disparity also grew at unprecedented levels. Property prices were out of control and his own property portfolio made strong gains from his own policies.
