there's even a water level measuring stick in bright yellow to indicate the deepness of the water!
Over 1 foot and there's no chance I would drive through that!

Yeah, pretty much every one with serious body-on-frame offroader vehicle does it carefully.

As an Australian watching this, I am amazed that people just don't have a clue about crossing water. Only the red Mazda at 6:15 and the BMW that crossed afterwards had a clue about the speed you should be driving through water. Given the amount of buggered engines and the expense, I am also amazed this sort of crossing still exists in the UK.
Especially that Discovery driver. He put so much money into the explorer looks of his car but has no clue how to drive it.
For me the biggest question why all that people not trying to help the drivers not to get into trouble?
There's no signs? Like: if you cross you can destroy your engine?

The engine sucks/breeds air. If water is sucked in the cylinder, your con rods are gone. Bent, because water doesn't shrink when the piston compresses it. The pistons can brake too. Look for hydrolocked engine.
The ones when they suddenly jerk stopped are the ones where you know a whole cylinder of water refused to be compressed!
How to hydro lock an engine in one simple step!

I know the majority get hydrolocked, but I wonder if some are a very simple fix, such as an inertia fuel cut off switch. Some hit the water with a considerable force.
@@comparecars_org Nothing to do with weak engines, it's where the air intake is and the fools forcing water into the engine.
And the ones with the drive wheels completely locked, that's a seized engine!
Land rover has been modified so that it is literally above the water level. Proceeds to speed through and force the water up into engine 💪
Saw a vid a few days of a guy on the beach at 100kph he hit salt water. His car was fucked. I paid good money that I work hard for my car. Why wreck it for fun lol

@@Ritchie1I've seen most guys that hydrolocked their engine and didn't try to start it up and instead got it to mechanic to get it properly cleared, escape without any damage. I'm guessing a lot depends on the RPM of the engine when the hydrolock occured.

Really. Most of them would have made it (at least without destroying their drive train) if they'd just have taken it nice and slow. Mind boggling.

Does it destroy a drivetrain? I think it's only engine. Average car though might not like this with drivetrain ventilation systems either.
I know I'm from the country and the only way is to stop, put it into 1st and proceed at walking place (or go backwards!). Otherwise water can be drawn into the engine intake.

Interiors totally flooded, electrics ruined, especially the cars which jolt suddenly when the piston tries to compress incompressible liquid. Even if the car starts, the long term damage will lead to most of these cars being written off

One thing I noticed in all these videos is, if they go slower, the water pushes away from the air intake. When they go fast, the water rushes into the air intake, causing the cylinder the break. Slow and steady wins the race.
Plenty of people drive through water fast thinking it's less of a problem, the reality is it's like hitting a brick wall more chance of stalling their cars and flooding their intakes. Common sense sholud prevail, if you see a crowd of people waiting at water then you shouldn't try and go through it. If you do, then you crawl through, it's the best way and less chance of screwing your engine up
@@RoadRunnerMeep I think they have a panic mentality and just want to get through it as quickly as possible. I suspect they also think as long as the engine electrics don't get wet it'll keep going. They don't realise it's water in the cylinders that destroys their engines.

Yeah, respect to the Hilux driver. Having a snorkel doesn't prevent damaging the rest of the vehicle by hitting the water hard
It's not actually a snorkel, they're high air intakes.
Those factory ones aren't sealed for water.

I live over the pond but get great joy watching these. I drive a lifted Jeep on big tires and wouldn't go through 80% of these (I don't have a snorkel). Boggles my mind at the number of CARS going through....how can they even think it's a good idea? Anyway, love the clips!

The same thought here. Many of them would easily done it by just going slow and not flooding air intake, which is pretty much at the engine top (in most cases). But they all rush, just to aquaplane or drive in slow but floor it half way - so again - huge wave just tops the engine...

Air intake on Sprinters is about level with the Merc badge IIRC.

@@jamesmx7 I am still recovering from seeing a 25year old Nissan Micra, hand painted gloss black (with brush strokes) with wheels from a tractor and 1ft high piece of plastic glued on top of the windscreen.
I have seen some tasteful modifications like an Astra Van with a 3litre v6 engine out of a Omega and a full digital dashboard from an Astra GTE in a Nova.
I prefer cars that look ordinary but have been modified slightly - better suspension (dampers, springs and bushes) with correct geometry settings, decent tyres, better brakes including hoses, short shift conversion, sump guard, bigger turbo and fuel pump and custom remap. No mods to exhaust or air intake as they do FA on a rolling road.
The guy with the old Defender is absolute genius. You can't have water hammer if you drive backwards

I can't understand why people are doing this. Most times if you go slow it won't force the water into the intake...depending on how your intake is set up. When you go fast it shoves it right in there lol

I'm 62 and figured with modern technology that people would become smarter. But what I actually am witnessing are people evolving backwards into cavemen. Just because you can afford a BMW doesn't mean that you have COMMON SENSE. Got to love the idi ot in his raised 4x4 that doesn't have a RAISED air intake to go along with it. If I lived there I would sell popcorn 🍿 .

That happens to me in my 12 year old little Mazda hatchback when its snows because I fit winter tyres. 4x4s on summer tyres get stuck or at least struggle and I just breeze past them. It's an absolute hoot!
There's two things I am going to do if I'm in the area and it's been raining.
1. Park up and don't try to push an unmodded car past a Road Closed Flood sign through deep water at insane speed.
2. Get the camera out for all those that ignore 1
VW Golf just built different. Went through slightly lower level in my 7.5R no issues
...loads of spectators, sign saying 'Flood. Road ahead closed' loads of knackered cars at the side of the road, and it's "nah.....it'll be FINE!"
No idea how that VW golf made it through.
Absolutely lucky day there, hope they played the lottery on their way home, really thought it was toast

If your engine is running above an idle, like driving down the road, an engine hydrolock will have dire and extensive consequences. The force behind the pistons moving upward can bend the connecting rod, crack the crankshaft, cause fractures in the cylinder walls, blow oil seals in the cylinder head, and more. If the engine is running at full tilt, a connecting rod can break and bash right through the engine block.
@@BanCristian lolololol. You obviously didn't learn in school that fluids are not compressible. Suck that into the engine and you lock the engine solid and the touque of the engine bends the connecting rod between crankshaft and piston.

Imagine going through in a hybrid in electric mode, filling the intake, and then the first time the engine fires up furhter down the road it floods the engine.

There’s a bright yellow depth gauge, and an audience. You have got to be a certain kind of special to drive through here.
At least the BMW driver right at the beginning managed to rip his number plate off by driving too fast.
