Kinda weird that they put so much effort into making it waterproof between the 2 shell parts but didn't bother with the battery cover. no wonder that it got corroded in there
Yea, also it doesn’t help alkaline cells when depleted often outgas and then they are designed to crack open and leak caustic fluid which eats metal for breakfast.
I think this proves that you need to get one of those FM transmitter thingies so you can transmit your own singing without having to worry about copyright for future radio projects.
Something you may want to try on a future repair like this. If you add baking soda to the super glue, it causes a chemical reaction where the super glue instantly cures into a tough plastic form. When repairing broken plastic like this, the resulting repair can sometimes be stronger than the plastic itself. Lots of other youtubers that have good examples if you don't trust some random bloke from Texas.
In the vid, you made a comment about how it was odd that the black wire went to the speaker terminal. The black return wire going to the speaker and not the board was just a different way to route the wires. Electrically, it's all the same. Obviously, because you fixed it. More specifically: That particular terminal of the speaker needed to be connected to common (i.e. 4.5V return). You might think of this as "ground", but just keep in mind that it isn't actually ground because it's an isolated battery-operated device. So, as long as the board, the speaker, and the battery cells have the same "common", and Kirchhoff's Voltage law is satisfied.
Happy Christmas! You have given me unfeasible amounts of humour and pleasure this year. You are much appreciated, even if as a retired old bloke with zero cash reserves I can't meaningfully demonstrate my joy with every video you release. Stupid New Year thing, too!😅
Me and my late father modified our fish fm radio with an longer external wire antenna and potted it to go down to 85mhz so we could listen to the local taxi service whilst sitting on the bog !
For plastic cracks, i would recommend using a latex paint or some other water seal after gluing. Flex Seal is a great product we have in the states, but you could also grab some latex molding stuff at a craft store. Just some extra insurance for the shower radio
And here I am watching Steve fixing a stupid seahorse thing at 9 in the morning on Christmas day from my vacation address in Mexico. Time to go to the beach 😅
I feel like the speaker was the highest power draw component, and it was biased between about 4.5Vish and 0V, so the ground went right from the battery to the speaker then branched to the tuner/amplifier so that it had the least noise.
You saw horse, you fixed horse. Brilliant. Also, might you consider doing a top 10 countdown of your renditions of well known songs to see out 2023? Go on!....
I really enjoyed this video (and all your other videos). Buying random (extra random in the case of a seahorse shower radio) and trying to fix it is entertaining. I say the MORE random, the better 💯
Think it’s a Steve Urkel alert. Seen this type (not shape) of radio in a retirement home. (For anyone not old enough Steve Urkel: “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up”)
Vintage? 2000 is vintage? Fuq I’m an antique then. Funny, my 7 year old asked me the other night, “when you were a kid did you have to wear the clothes that were made out of animal fur?” I said “I’m not that old bud.” lol.
This is why I prefer to wrap a valve radio in cling film and use that in the shower. You can't shut the bathroom door, though, as the mains extension lead has to be plugged in, in the bedroom and then reeled out to the bathroom.
That’s the thing about primitive countries, they don’t have outlets directly in the bathroom next to the sink or bath tub. We may have lower voltage here in America, but those ground fault outlets we were supposed to be using in the bathroom or within 6’ of water are like complying with a code. We just takde soome drugs to ignore the side effects and get over it in a few days. Then we can have our favorite toys in the shower, even with a short cord.
I have a similar shower radio with the siren, although it's an octopus. I disconnected the siren to use that button as the on/off across the battery terminal as, when you have wet hands you can't turn the normal on/off dial there it has no ridges, you then leave the volume (on/off) dial in a nice volume setting and switch on/off with the siren button.
The negative of the battery goes to the speaker and then on to the rest of the radio because the speaker is connected to the audio output of the radio on one side, and ground on the other.
I had one of these when I lived at my parents. Yeah the siren was a weird feature. Presumably you were meant to bang that with your fist as you flailed on the way to slipping and breaking your leg in the shower, lest you were left unable to move staring up at the un-pressed button on the wall now high above you taunting you. I suppose you could've screamed for help of course, like some sort of peasant.
Richard Marx’s ‘Hazard’ was playing in the office early one morning as the cleaner did her rounds. When it finished, she whispered under her breath, “He is as guilty as sin.”
It's videos like this one which make me really worry about you, Steven.. You sometimes seem more caught up in pondering whether you'd be able to fix something, that you completely forget to assess whether you actually should. An example: Let's say that you somehow got a chance at fixing Talkie the Toaster from Red Dwarf. Undeniably one of the upmost horrid and utterly bad ideas of all time ever... do you think you would be able to hold back and resist the temptation? 🤣❤
Not that weird for the negative going to the speaker. It's likely grounded on the metal casing and needed the most solid connection. They made sure of that by directly soldering it. Cheap-o but very effective. Sadly you didn't have a real issue to fix here... or a use for the product by itself.
Stupid Radio Seahorse Thing
But it has nice Ukrainian colors on it. Or Sweden, but they're stupid.
Merry Christmas 🎄 Steve! Thanks for all the fun and inspiration ❤
Great video Steve; my wife had almost the same thing when we started dating.
She referred to the siren as the Macy Gray alarm.
Merry Christmas!
Steve I'd like to wish you a merry Christmas and happy new year to your self and your family 👍👍
Always Horseing around huh Steve
“So what did you do on Christmas Eve?”
“I watched a Lancastrian heat up a seahorse’s bum.”
“Please get out of my house.”
Hey wait wait.............................. ......................................... ...........I want to see what happens.

Yea, also it doesn’t help alkaline cells when depleted often outgas and then they are designed to crack open and leak caustic fluid which eats metal for breakfast.
IIRC, the cover you take off to put the batteries in had a really thin rubber gasket on it.
looks like it was adequately done until the crack/missing spring let a leak in.
"Made in 2000" and "vintage"; thanks, Internet, for making me feel ancient yet again.
23 years went fast eh
@@robot566323?? 23???!!! Ffs
That's what I was thinking if 2000 is vintage I must be an antique

You mean a stupid broken FM transmitter to fix and then use on future radio projects.
The Ronco Mr Microphone from 1978.
You mean one of those technicly illegal to use transmitters that were sold everywhere for a couple quid.😂
Whats the Name of the Song please?

StezStix working on a shower seahorse was on my Christmas list! Thanks Santa!
I like when you open unique things like this, it’s fun to see what’s on the inside.
this brings me back. I'm pretty sure we actually had one of these. it never worked after the first week
Obviously the siren is to ward off unsuspecting intruders to your shower seahorse shenanigans, what else would it be there for?
If you fell in the shower? Not the worst thing for a senior who can't afford a pricy call system.
@@mehere8299 when you can’t afford to seahorse around in the shower.
That singing at the end would be ideal for Halloween, it scared the poop out of me anyway.
It's 20 past midnight, and I'm watching you take apart a shower radio. I love it :D

DUDE!! I had one of these when I was a kid! Holy Crap! I forgot all about that thing. Nice video, as always, my man! Thanks for the nostalgia.
This caught my eye for the same reason! I had one as a kid, too!
Now you got you a shower seahorse buddy. I could watch your videos 24/7. Keep up the good work.😊❤️
Brilliant it’s in good condition for being 23 years old nice fix Steve thanks
Have a great Christmas 😊

Hey good to hear the classic disassembly music again, Steve! Happy New Year! 🎼

Seamless end sequence transition 👌🏻
I had this radio! Nice to see it again. I knew what was coming when you pressed that red button 😆
reading "Vintage" from the listing about something that was made in 2000 really hurt my feelings
I've been watching your vids for nearly a year now mate please keep up the great work, and i thoroughly enjoy them all. Cheers, rob
Absolutely lovely humor in your videos!

I was half expecting a shower scene with hair net on and a scrubber in hand 😁
It will take weeks to get this song out of my head, thanks for reminding me to that absolute classic!
Oh, and also, merry x-mas ;)
That siren is a "Hazard" warning 😄

If you sprinkle baking soda on super glue it sets rock hard 😊
I once used foil to put AAA batteries in a Wiimote. They were all I had. It worked.
Amazing that somebody actually bought that thing back in the day 😅
had to laugh at the siren reaction.
I would have added tub sealer around the crack on the inside and outside to help with waterproofing

Thanks for all your videos enjoy watching them merry Christmas Steve and see you soon 😊

Merry Christmas and all the best for the future my man!!!
There's a man repairing a seahorse on top of his desk.
Thumbs up for a drunken Ebay purchase.
Turns it on and exclaims A-ha! and seahorse coincidentally plays Take On Me. 😂
Nice job and easy ish 🎉🎉

Maybe that's a clue as what the sea shells where for in Demolition Man.
The siren is incase your elderly relative slips over though how they would be able to reach the button in that case is dubious.
The beginning part hit me right in the feels, the amount of rubbish I buy when drunk!
"How many screws should we use to secure this seahorse thing?"
"Yes."
I like you music selection

I was once drunk and did something regrettable with a seahorse. She was drunk too.
nice SOLID fix video :) and Merry Christmas to you and everyone in this comment section!
Look that secret stash for a chunk of hashish!
The siren is to make you feel safe in the shower after watching Psycho!
Careful burning CA glue, mate!
maybe it's a panic alarm if you slip in the shower?
I've been told I'm hung like a horse. A seahorse.
Super glue wont hold up to pressure over time. Better off melting the plastic back together. Or using plastic epoxy.
Lmao… when I saw the price I said out loud… HOW MUCH?? 😂
Love the intro ahahahah

I used to have that radio!
It is a fin, Steve. Pectoral fin.

don't glue plastic, use heat. then smuge the crack together. can use different plastic as a patch and file it off afterwards

Superglue activator spray for instant bond
I have one of these shaped like a frog. Pretty sure it was made by the same factory.
Merry Christmas!
Nice
Merry Fixmas!
Use epoxy instead of superglue, it's better for watery things :)
Only you would purchase a defective seahorse... lol Never know what you will be working on next... Thumbs Up
The seahorse rides again
9:02 , thats to call the misses to wash your back.
I would of put a thin coat of silicone on to seal it waterproof again.
Was it still waterproof though!

21st century, do we have Buck Rodgers?, Noooo, we get seahorse am/fm radios that can play in your shower.
I've been watching your videos for months and only just realized I'd never actually subscribed. Fixed that straight away. Stupid UA-cam.
Oh, hold on...this is a different channel! Stupid ME, apparently.
So, the "Siren" button makes a siren noise... who knew? 😆
