You're a maestro of shortwave radio, sir. You make a person feel good about owning a shortwave radio no matter how much they pay for it. Thank you for being such a strong, passionate supporter of the hobby! 👍👍👍 Keep riding the radio waves and may your signals be strong. 💪👊
Last year I was about to buy the old version Tecsun 2000 for 200€ because this radio look goog finally i bought the Malahit DSP2 SDR with his beautiful waterfall for 286€ on Aliexpress My goal was to have the best receiver with all bands Gilles you are right its a question of taste..
Quite frankly, if price performance ratio is the deciding factor, the best value for money is a high end radio from the late 80s, early 90s, the legendary Icom R71 springs to mind. These older radios were built at what I consider the peak of RF engineering, with real crystal filters, excellent mixers, and great dynamic range. All modern radios are built to a price, use pretty much similar chips and circuitry, relying on bells and whistles to seduce the user. Older radios are available at very realistic prices, and are easily fixed and maintained, even the schematics are available, the parts used are through hole and generic, making repair easy. My R71a is equal to, and sometimes can outperform the Icom 8600.
It would make a nice retro looking replacement for my icom R71A on my desk but as far as being used daily I'd still be using my SDRPlay and Malahit DSP2, since I got the SDRPlay in 2017 a waterfall has become a necessity
If you want the radio, buy the radio. You can never get the time back you missed with it. Your wife may get mad at you, but you will still have the radio. If you've upset her, apologize sincerely without making excuses. Say something like "I made a mistake, and I'm sorry for hurting you. That wasn't my intent, but I understand why you feel that way." Convey to her that you understand her perspective. Ask questions to learn more about her feelings and why she's upset and what you can do to make it right. This will help her realize that you're listening to her and she will feel validated. While you may feel a sense of personal satisfaction with the decision (e.g., having the radio), it’s important to avoid expressing this sentiment during the apology. The focus should be on making amends and improving the relationship rather than on personal gains.
Yes, the personal financial situation is one question to buy or not. I like my older radios because they are doing what I want. The conditions on shortwave aren`t better with a new radio.. So evrerybody has to make a personal decision to buy this new radio or not.
excellent thoughts, you can apply these thoughts to anything you want to buy, guitars for example, Gibson Les Paul cost more than 2500 dollars, a chinese version cost 10 times less, Gibson sounds 10 times better?…probably not…this is the value you add about what you want to buy…your reviews add a huge value to the radio lovers, because you like it, i love it..this is how the brain works sometimes…thank you for your videos Gilles and you honest comments!!!
Thanks for bring a little reality in these types of discussions. I am in the market right now and price is almost no object. I am still putting the PL990x on the top of my list and I have little idea of the price and it doesn't matter. If one can't afford it, than be honest and say; 'you can't afford it', instead of 'it's too pricy.'
You need to think what you already have and need. I jumped at the news of the 2200. Then, a few minutes later my brain started working again and I had to say: probably not! I own a ton of radios (well, nothing compared to Gilles) alone from Tecsun I own the 330 , 680, s2000 , h-501x. This new radio is a beauty, no question! It is a sure BUY when you don't already own x-radios that can all together more or less do the same and you not have the back yard look like the Antenna array of NORAD, because all that then makes the €400.- look like an overkill and in my case, a guaranteed divorce!😅 But if you don't (yet) belong to the "Guild of Radio Addicted Nutcases" (as we here are, happily so😊😊) then €400.- is the right pricepoint and you will enjoy this beauty! What broke it for me is again the SYNC- same rubbish as the others have, exception the 680 ( but even that is no comparison to the Sony 7600). The overall package of the S-2200 is an extremely interesting and very complete Radio/ System and offers many things you can't find in others. As you say Gilles, you have to sit down and think what you really want! If I would buy it it would just be No.xy in the collection, but there is nothing in that radio I can't do with my collection and therefore makes no sense....!! I would happily pay 450/500 Euros if it would have a functioning SYNC, I do use it a lot at night to grab a station - the Sony does it for me. If I wish to listen to a concert - the 501 is top! To those who buy the new 2200: congratulations and enjoy many happy hours out there listening to the world!
I enjoy your thoughts and reviews. Just as you said, there's a radio for nearly any taste and budget -- though I prefer to have one like this 2200x which doesn't mute when tuning. Are there any smaller and cheaper choices that also don't mute? I loved my old Grundig Satellit 2000, and this 2200x adds some much-needed improvements. However, these days the elephant in the room is whether there's anything still worth listening to on shortwave.
Whether the price of something is "worth it" is totally subjective. It depends on a person's financial situation along with their needs and priorities. It sounds from your testing that the S 2200x is superior in many aspects to the more portable Tecsun 990x or H-501x so this will be reflected in its price.
I guess it depends what you mean by "superior in many aspects". I don't see it superior in any aspects to be honest.. What would be worth $200 that this radio gives that a 501x doesn't.. The agility to use D batteries? Is that worth a $200 difference?? It's all depends...... Other youtubers haven't been as nice about this radio as Giles has....
Because I have the money and like big radios I’ll be getting one I sold my h501x because for me I found it too small plus I didn’t like the tuning knob on the side the S220x fits what I’m looking for as for price well,it’s not that much more than a h501x and I get the radio I want.
Be honest, Tecsun seems to be in competition with itself with this radios vs their other high end radios to be honest.. What should I get.. a Tecsun 990 or a Tecsun 501 or a Tecsun 2200x... It's weird to be targeting a market you already have.
Honestly, I have an Icom 7200 and a Icom 705. In my opinion amateur radios make good shortwave radios. I like the waterfall display and the small size of the 705. And it comes with a rechargeable battery.
Of course something being “worth it” is a personal thing, but it’s ok to comment with an opinion on if something is a relatively good value for the price and what you’re getting for that money. It’s hard to see how this radio in a larger cabinet with nicer knobs, an external antenna and added air band is really a good value. It looks cool, but nearly $400 just seems silly. I never knock anyone for buying what they like if it’s in their means but I don’t know why anyone would want to stretch themselves out to get one of these. I got a PL330 for $64 new on Anon recently so you could buy at least 5-6 of them for what this 2200x will sell for which is crazy. If it had some crazy technology that actually pushed its performance dramatically then I’d get it, but it essentially just looks like a PL990 that got put into a bigger box with shiny knobs and a meter lol. Just my opinion anyway.

Its a hell yeah for me. Just sold my s2000 for 350, good trade in my opinion.

"Worth it" is different from "fairly priced." Something can be fairly priced while not being worth it to me.
👏👏👏

What color car should I buy next, Gilles? :)
Definitely Blue! :-)
xhdata d-219 less than ten bucks... great starter radio. it just works.
Yes it's an excellent cheapo.
Question: If you had to purchase one for yourself, would you?
Yes
Really what's the point I'm selling my radios keeping a couple
It' like anything else. The price is what someone is willing to pay.
If I have the 501x should i get a 2200x?
How much is it? I can't find it for sale anywhere.

It's supposed to be available in September. He was sent a review unit.
@@junior3429 An Icom 705 is way more expensive than this
@@junior3429 They're not cheap when purchased new.
Supposed to be available sometime in September 2024. Google anon-co
