  • Welcome to the Bessemer & Lake Erie in HO scale! Today we visit with Ray Brown and his under construction B&LE layout. This layout is truely massive, and will be a triple deck layout once complete. It will model the B&LE from North Bessemer to Conneaut, OH and include portions of the Erie Branch and the Western Allegheny! It is set in the early 1950s timeframe so steam power can be included, but this isn't a strict setting. Later diesel power will be run as well.
Ray uses Digitrax as the DCC power, but is completly wireless and prefers the TCS wireless UWT-50 and UWT-100 throttles.
Ray has a You Tube channel, and usually provides updates every week or so- check it out, subscribe and follow Ray's progress:

One of the highlights of Ray's layout will be the massive bridge over the Allegheny River. Here is a drone video by Western Pennsylvania Railfan that shows a train crossing the bridge:

Many thanks to Ray and his black lab Betty for having us over! I can't wait to operate on Ray's layout and see it when he gets all three decks complete- this will be one magnificent layout!
Look for a Cab-Ride video around the lower level of the layout- coming soon.

    Dear Sires,
When i listen to Van Halen i time travel to 1978. To me, 1952 must be just around the corner. No problem whatsoever in having a Van Halen Graffiti in a 50s layout. In Portuguese we call it a poetic license.
    Cheers from Brazil!

What a massive layout! Looking forward to seeing it's progress, glad that they also have a UA-cam channel. Reminds me of when you started, I was hooked when you took the room down to bare walls and started fresh.

Great video and wonderful layout! Just had to chime in here, I have a Bessemer / Wallace JCT represented on my Norfolk Southern factious Val Valley sub. in Ho. One last connection is that my Grandfather had worked for the Bessemer for a short time, hence why I included Wallace JCT. Also the fact that I live just an hour away from Wallace JCT. Great video! Awesome layout. Wish I had that kind of space!

The continuous rail through the switches by building them in place is an awesome idea.

What size is the room or building?

I'll be the odd man out and say: If I had this much room for a MRR I would have copied a full-size short line higher up and not a be a double or triple-decker. I never took to the look the multi-decks create.. A single level with this huge space would be enough of a RR to operate prototypically and look great as well.
I'm sure Ray will have a grand layout here and, if this is his desire, that's all that counts..I just personally think it gets to be too much to handle in several ways and becomes a chore, and no longer an easy goin' hobby..
