In this video I go over animating character lip sync to dialogue in Clip Studio Paint, from importing audio, to keyframes to inbetweens!
Thank you guys for the positive feedback on the previous video, I hope this one helps as well. Celsys/Clip Studio sponsored me yet again for this video so a big thank you to them too!

Hello Louixie
Acting out the animation yourself and paying attention to the movement (especially for lipsync) really helps, although it can be a bit awkward if you're not alone in the room lol (amazing tutorial as always!!)
I once had to film myself doing something for reference for a short film and it felt super awkward haha but it totally helps!
i did that for a while now i just automatically overly mouth the words without meaning to lol
Always do that
If you watch any of the Milt Kahl animation videos, ALL the old paper-and-pencil animators had a MIRROR at their desk to watch thier lip movements and mouths and things. They made faces at themselves. It really does help!!
Your tutorials are always amazing
This is reallyy really helpful and I loved how you spoke through the entire process and explained it in a normal way, thank you so much :' )
I would put this into a tutorial teaching playlist, though I can trust in myself. I might watch it from time to time though.
We have audio scrubbing now!!! 😄
yess!
oo this was super helpful!! was just starting to work on a short lipsync, so this was perfectly timed lol. always love watching ur tutorials!!
I used to have this issue in CSP where when I import audio it doesn't work. It gets imported, yes, BUT - there was no soundwaves, no audio, nothing. Just the layer. Here's how to fix that:
The reason -
The reason this happens is because the codec of the file is unsupported, even if the format is correct, that doesn't change the codec. I don't know how to see or change the codec of a file,, but I did find a way to get around this.
The fix -
What I do it, I save my file (which doesn't work right away because of the site I use), feed it into an audio editing software/website (In my case, I use soundtrap because I have a subscription, but others work too), you can edit it or just leave it, do whatever. Save that version, delete the original file from your computer (for the sake of your storage) and the new file should work. If it doesn't,, just try use soundtrap haha it's free and it works for me
OHH gosh this is perfect, thank you so much!
When I lipsync I usually animate the character first then add the mouth on top with a new layer.
That works too!
same
Your drawings are really pretty
thank you!!
Really helpful tutorial! Thank you Finch
Definitely helped! You're so good!
Love your videos finch
Please help me! My csp is crushing if i want to export my animation with audio its frustating TT? why
I've heard that WAV formate allows for better scrubbing on CSP. Has someone tested that out?
It's annoying that CSP advertises EX as their "animation" version of the software and it doesn't have audio scrubbing. I've been looking around to see what tips people have but it's still disappointing
It's still very suited for animation o: audio scrubbing is helpful but it's not necessary
You fantastic Finnic you
So lip sync on android / ios tablet is impossible because it seems like it's harder to start and play the audio
aah that's unfortunate ;o; in that case id draw out your keys and then try time them afterwards
stinky
Your voice is so soft. It’s awesome to listen to with a tutorial. Absolutely amazing! Keep up the good work and have a good day!
thanks so much ;o;
mic sounds pretty good too
S T I N K Y ! ?
Helpful tip: use the blue timeline brackets to isolate a small area to get a more specific idea of where each vocal sound starts
This tutorial came at the perfect time for me, thank you!! A little bit of critique though, if you don't mind, the "stinky" is louder than your voice so it's a bit odd/requires audio to be adjusted when there's a lot of replay
Aah yea it is a bit loud, I was listening to it over so many times I didn't really notice D: sorry about that!
whaaaa, I want to repeat that I think these videos on your channel are damn underestimated !! I love them and it pains me tearfully to see such a small number of views and likes!
the video is awesome and it turned out to be VERY helpful to me, I am having huge problems with animation and your videos are so inspiring and helpful in this regard! Thanks!!
Aw I'm really glad they help ;0; thank you!
You’re an awesome teacher and animator as well as a skilled illustrator. Please do not stop!
Thank you so much for the video. My lip syncing was quite stale and this helped me a lot!
;o; thanks so much!
Now i keep getting "stinky??" in my head lol. Keep it up, i love your animations ! Good work!😻
Great tutorial! I love watching the process of people animating and explaining through it
When the EFF is clip going to add audio scrubbing? Like I can't understand how such a key feature is missing.
it's an illustration program first so it wont have every animation tool possible! I believe they're adding it kinda soon anyways
@@Finchwing the thing is, the ONLY real reason to buy EX is for animation, and the fact that they seem to be neglecting that aspect of their program really sucks. i hope they do add it soon though
@@Jamjamsart still, much cheaper than paying £80 a month for toon boom for eg!
I always struggled animating in CSP. For some reason, whenever I make an animation and it goes one with some frames closer together ((sometimes but not always)), it likes to lag out and not match up with the audio despite it being on time, has that ever happened to you? if so, how did you fix it?
ooh I don't think I've had that :'o if it's lag then it might just be the preview struggling to render and the final export will be ok, or if it's timing wise with the frames it's usually a good idea to have your frames a frame or 2 behind their audio cue as we tend to hear audio before we see visuals! Makes it look a lil more timed
I had a problem with the audio lagging a ton, and found out using .ogg files instead of .mp3 files helped a lot. There was still some lag but not much.
i know this is very old but I had that issue a lot too and found that choosing the option "render before playback" helped it a lot. go to animation tab then playback settings
@@Jamjamsart Ill try that out, thank you so much!!
@@Jamjamsart I was about to comment on the same issue but this sounds like just the fix :)
The ability to *scrub* the audio track to analyze it and annotate the track as a guide to syncing the animation to the sound is something that the developers need to add to CSP. Writing the words directly on the drawings is a good idea, but I'd like to have audio scrubbing.
you can also time out ur lipsync keys, play it back, and adjust the timing accordingly til it looks right
I got so invested in this then I just heard it... "Stinky. Stinky, Stinky, Stinky"
I can't hear my audio. Even checked play In real time. Won't work
me too
How did you get so good at animating???
Practice and practice and practice probably
Omg this is so helpful- thank you 💖
kinda crazy they havent added scrubbing yet
I really wISH they had scrubbing!! It would help so much more😔😔
yea it would D: but works well otherwise!
I mailed Clip and bag them for Adding Audio Scrubbing
The fact that csp doesnt have audio scrubbing is auauau
it seems that it is better that kritas audio tho. Krita makes me suffer with its audio
You are a blessing! This is exactly what I need to learn for some projects I'm trying to work on!
so glad it could help!!
whenever I import audio it does come up like a layer, except, no sound plays and there aren't any soundwaves visible on the timeline either. i've tried different file types, restarting my laptop, updating CSP, none of it worked - I also went on the csp forum to ask but nobody was a help there. can someone help me?
might be something to do with the audio filetype? have you tried with a different audio file just to check if it has something to do with the file itself?
@@Finchwing Yep.. It’s been like this for like 4 months already, it’s literally my main barrier to learning to animate 💀
@@spoofrog oh gosh that's frustrating im sorry ;o; I'm not quite sure how to fix. There's plenty you can do to learn to animate though, like look up the 12 principles and practice those. Audio can come later
@@Finchwing Okkkkkk, thanks for replying too :D
I’m having the same issue and is HATING it so much because it worked once and never worked since. It makes me really sad.
S h t a n k y:3
Thank you soo much for helping me with animation! I also use clip studio paint pro and your tutorials help me a lot with making the animations.
Thanj you so so much
meu deus, sicronia labial é tão trabalhossoooo, mas aqui já é um novo começo, muito bom o vídeo carinha, bom trabalho! amei o vídeoo!!
How donyiubget your animations soo smooth, I understand the animation basics but my animations look soo stiff and dead
like they just go and stop
I think it's a combination of timing, inbetween drawings and frame count!
its hard for me to find out exactly where the word starts out in which frame even with scrubbing. scurbbing makes it even more unclear. The words start right after a word and the lines of waveform looks are one after another and i cant find where the words are. I use toonboom. how do i find out where the words are and
You just kinda get used to it honestly, don't worry about getting it 100% right! As long as it looks right when the animation is played back it's all good. Sometimes speech is slurred or mumbled so that makes it harder to 'find' words, if it helps you can record yourself making the sound and use your own mouth as reference
@@Finchwing makes sense. thats a good idea. I'll have to try that
your art is absolutely awesome💓💓💓💞💕💞💟💖💗💖💝💝💖😻😻
Hello do you do private classes?
afraid not D:
YESSS. I need more information! YASSSS
In hindsight, I can't animate anything longer than a second either, so ..great. went through all the trouble to sample something and now i can't do it XD
The Animal Crossing music 🥲
I've followed your channel since I was 11 in 6th grade and have looked up to your art in warrior cat MAP's for so long! Now that I'm graduating high school I've grown an even deeper appreciation for animation and have wanted to learn it. This video was really helpful, thanks for the great work!
this is amazing
use Flash
ew
lol idk if you'll see this. At 5:05 when u went to frame 13, how'd you make the onion appear from 8 layers back?
if you click the three little lines in the top left of the timeline, itll open a menu, go to show animation cels - onion skin settings, and you can change the number in there! It's more cumbersome than other programs but it's in there
@@Finchwing Awesome!!! Tysm!
Help ;w;
My "go to the next frame" doesn't work, it literally scrolls to the exact next frame, even if empty x.x
I think that's what it's meant to do ;o;
Been a while since I saw one here!~ heyo Finch! Keep up the work, you're doing great.
how do you render this as an MP4 then?
The mp3 file loads in for me but it doesn't actually play the audio. When I play it outside csp it works, though. I don't know what I'm doing wrong cause up to this point I've followed the video
oh bizarre? D: maybe try a different audio file format?
Is clipstudio for mobile too?
Amazing tutorial! Love it! :)
Great video
stinky
Love this so much
you sooo cute
Love this! It definitely helps.
Can you turn scrubbing on??
explained in the video yo!
one second is not a hole lot to work with. do you know any software that allows to work animation for longer timeframes?
as mentioned in my prev tutorial, the full version allows for more time !
@@Finchwing how much time?
