Great review, as always Tom! Like you, I still prefer the sound of the first version of the Mv7. I want to leave a warning for those who, like me, have the first version of the Mv7: the last time I tried to update the Shure Plus MOTIV, I received a message saying that they will stop updating the software and are encouraging people to use the new Shure Motiv Mix. It turns out that when using the Motiv Mix with the first version of the Mv7, it does not enable any of the features such as compressor, limiter, among others. Only if you have the new Mv7 Plus. Of course I will continue using the Plus Motiv. Shure should support it for a while longer, after all, it has not even been 5 years since the launch of the first Mv7. Greetings, Tom!

21:20 One thing you missed when making setting adjustments on the original MV7 - there are actually two tabs - Auto Level and Manual. Selecting "manual" should give you access to all the other mic settings, similarly to how it was on the previous ShurePlus Motiv app.
I had a great time hanging out with you guys last night. To be honest, I'm feeling a bit lost and unsure about what I want. You know what really stressed me out? Trying to get more subscribers. I'm also struggling to figure out how to choose the right microphone and make a purchase. Additionally, I'm not sure how to use my interface.
Great work, Tom! I've had the Rode NT-USB+ for over a year now, and it's still #1 for bang for buck in USB mics, in my opinion. In addition, I recently got into home music recording and found the LCT 440 to be the best for acoustic instruments.
I bought the MV7+ and it was pretty good for its price. However, I returned it after I found that it was picking up other background noise, and it essentially had to be in the video frame. With Tom's other videos, I concluded that what I wanted was a shotgun mic, and got a RØDE VideoMic NTG instead.
Yeah, if you need something boomed out of frame a mic like the NTG is a great choice. The MV7+ and similar dynamic mics work best about 6-12 inches from the speaker 👍
Awesome video, thank you so much!! While reviewing, did you experience the sound being a bit muffled when using USB instead of XLR?

Is it normal for the shure mv7 to register too low when using it in USB mode? I have all the audio at maximum and still the sound is too low and without quality
I definitely don't think that's normal. Double check that the firmware is up to date. If it is, then double check your computer's input levels and the mic's level in the Motiv software. If you're STILL having problems after that, then I'd read out to Shure's support for some help.
MV7 is really great because personally I have really nice Schiit audio dac and amp combo, I have really no plan on downgrading to audio interface, or get more stuff on the table. Ultimately, using USB just was least hassle, and also saved me a lot of money. That said, if I was serious UA-camr or some other kind of media producer, I would get SM7B. But for my purposes of gaming and work, there's no reason to sacrifice my premium audio, convenience and desk space.
The original MV7 had a micro usb port where caused lots of problems with bad connections and the cable would fall out. Glad to see it was replaced with usb-c which it should have had in the first place.
I got the MV7+ a few weeks ago, but I returned it because (at least to me) it sounded almost indistinguishable from my $25 Behringer XM8500. You should check it out sometime if you haven’t already, it’s a really good value microphone. I did end up getting an SM7B to replace my XM8500 though, but I could’ve easily continued using the XM8500 with no issues.
The MV7+ is looking like a nice update. I'm hoping that Shure goes ahead and updates the MV51, which is a USB-only condenser mic with an awesome retro design, with USB-C connectivity. It's still my favorite USB-only mic, but the micro USB connection is too outdated, and it doesn't work with Shure's latest software.
Hi,, i really liked the content please suggest me should i go with mv7+ or Rode podmic usb or Rode nt1 usb version or please suggest some good mic around this budget
They're all great mics, so you really can't go wrong. The NT1 with USB has very limited USB functionality, so I'd probably not recommend it if you plan to do a lot of USB stuff. I personally prefer the natural sound of the MV7+ over the PodMic, but the PodMic can be EQ'd to sound great too, depending on how much time you want to spend with processing. If I had to just pick one of those options right now though, I'd go for the Shure.
@@tombuck Damn was hoping you could weigh in lol. Considering getting one but not doing anything without your stamp of approval. Keep up the good work, man! ❤
Hey Tom, was looking to grab the girlfriend a microphone for streaming and I’m thinking she can start with usb and work into XLr if she continues with it. That said, I’m between the MV7 + and the Podmic USB. First question is.. would one of the two be better in a room we are both gaming/streaming in? And the second is just which would you recommend in general? Thanks so much in advance!
I can attest to the original MV7 micro USB port breaking...... torn traces, not repairable. Fortunately I normally use the MV7 via XLR into a MixPre-3ii recorder / interface so it has not been catastrophic with the broken USB. I did like being able to monitor my own audio without latency by plugging my headset directly into the MV7 headphone jack and still be able to hear desktop audio. Glad to see they upgraded the USB port to USB-C for the new model.
That was such a huge gripe for me. It was very easy to put tension on that port and then have it become unreliable. For whatever reason, that doesn't seem to happen with USB C.
@@tombuck Someone held my Google Pixel 6a with a DJI Mic 2 receiver plugged into the USB-C and accidentally dropped it on the ground. The connection has been unreliable since then.... until I used a toothpick from a Swiss Army Knife to clean out fluff that had built up inside the socket. Now it works fine again. 😀
Hey Tom, I’m a big fan! I’m actually looking for a microphone and ordered the MV7x but I sent it back to try out the Samson Q9U. Based on your experience, which would you recommend for someone who wants to do voiceovers and podcasts mainly but also a little music stuff. The Shure MV7+ or the Samson Q9U?
I definitely prefer the overall sound of the MV7+ over the Q9u, although both are excellent. But if you've tried several dynamic mics and aren't happy, maybe consider trying out a condenser like the Lewitt LCT 240, Rode NT1, or Shure SM4!
The headphone cable is one of the Rode ones for the NTH100 headphones. My USB cable is also from Rode, but I don't think they sell them unfortunately- It just showed up with some other gear last year.
Great review. Thanks for comparing it to a hand-held mic, which sounds great. I'm curious if the hand held mic is also as good at blocking unwanted noise as the SM7b. Anyone have experience with that? I'll likely use Logic Pro to process all my sound, so I don't need all this built-in software stuff, and don't care too much about the look of a podcast mic. I wonder if a hand held SM58 will perform just as well, having the post-recording processing... Thoughts?
What kind of background noise was there in this microphone you tested? How much gain did it need? I'm asking this because I bought a Sennheiser Profile and it had really loud background noise and it needs maximum gain to pick up sound at all. I immediately returned it. I wonder a little why you recommend it.
I love the Profile! The important thing to remember is that your computer's input gain needs to be set properly. It's usually buried in the sound settings, and if it's too low, then it won't matter if a mic's gain is maxed out. As for background noise, the Profile is a condenser and the MV7 is dynamic, so in general a dynamic mic will pick up less noise.
@@tombuck Awesome! Nice videos, Tom. When you do the make the video, it'd be nice to see BOTH stands in different positions. Off to the side out of the way and in front of you.
If you’re not a brand snob, the Ffine product line up such as the Tank 3 are cheaper and imho better options. I have a K688 and the sound ranks up with the SM7b.
Hi Tom I use my mv7 for live zoom sessions in which I sing and use instruments at the same time in my little box room. I am using an old Mac in which I will try and install the Shure software. I was thinking of upgrading to the mv7+ but not sure now. Please can you advise? Thank you
I have a question. I have Shure Mv7 from 2021. should I get a Motu M2 or Motu M4 and go XLR? USB don't give me that quality. will an interface provide me quality?
Which one would you recommend for using it with usb? It the MV7 Plus worth the extra money over the original MV7? Like the audio quality itself, im leaning to the Plus since of the software options.
If you're mainly using it through USB, yes I think the new one is a very worthwhile update. The USB C port and physical changes to the mic along with different software features and control make it much better for USB.
Is there any reason to get the mv7+ over an mv7x with a sm7b or an mv7+ windscreen? mv7+ cost about 268 euro and the mv7x only costs 161 euros (do need an interface but seems better to have an interface for that 100 euro difference).
You can compare the XLR and USB sound by recording both to different tracks, flipping polarity to one of them and see if they null. Pretty common practice in the audio engineering world 😉
The only thing I have against the original Mv7 is the lights not tuning on if you use the xlr vs the usb. I wish they could at least show the sound levels or something.
From what I know, the electronics just don't work via XLR in a way that can do this. I was surprised by the Lewitt Ray though because it can do A LOT via XLR, but there must still be some sort of difference.
Is the windscreen on the MV7+ thicker at the top from the shorter MV7 and if so where can that particular one be ordered so I might be able to use it on my old MV7?
I just purchased the Shure MV7+. Does it bring much value to use the Shure RK345 Black Foam Replacement Windscreen for SM7A and SM7B Microphones instead of the one that comes with the MV7+? I read a lot that people replaced the windscreen for the MV7 but could not find much information with the newer MV7+.
I talk about windscreens about 2:44 here, but yes it definitely helps. The new windscreen that comes with the plus is much better though, so you might not need to change it.
A lot of computer settings can change the USB quality, so there are definitely some variable there. To my ears, there wasn't much of a different with the MV7, but that could be different depending on your speakers/headphones
If my pc doesn’t have USB C can I run a USB C to USB? I’m trying to have the XLR connected to an Audio Mixer to one PC and the USB C connected to my work PC.
Oof I wish I could get the custom colorware shure mic, It'd be awesome if shure did that themselves or add some cool things to customize it. I don't wanna spend more on a nicer looking mic I already have :C
@@tombuck What about the DocRock mic foam? Since that's like the only customization I can do to the one I already own, I can't afford to drop another 200-300 for this mic to get the colorware version 😭
"Can I use its software with my XLR microphone? Also, can the microphone with a USB-XLR and its software be used with both XLR and USB or only with USB?
Question on the Podmic USB: Have you, or anyone here, had it randomly reset? I went through 3 of them with that issue and one of my actors is having it with his.
A lot of it really comes down to practice and mic technique. Good windscreens and pop filters can help too, along with adding de-clickers and de-essers with software.
The MV7shiuld have come with a small metal adapter. This will allow the mic’s 5/8 connector to work with the stand’s 3/8 connector (this is very common for most mics and boom arms/stands).
@@TheSpeedyBlueNinjaHe mentions getting the colorful mic windscreens from the reporter store (online). The link to the XLR cable is in the description of this video.
Definitely different purposes. The Videomix is better if you want to be further from the mic, and the Shure is better if you cna position the mic close to the speaker (6-12 inches).
Funny how NOBODY talks the fact that the MV7+ is STUCK at 48khz. Which can be problematic when you work in 44 or 88 sessions. The weird sh*t here is that the previous MV7 COULD choose between 44 and 48.
I love the Ray! I guess the biggest feature difference would be if you need USB or not, and whether you prefer dynamic or condenser mics. But yeah, the Ray is so so nice.
@@tombuck I have a Sennheiser md21u and a md412k... So a condenser is next on my list 😎 and yes I love classic microphones with proven tech... But the Ray is something different indeed. I do prefer XLR over USB. But that should come as no surprise 😜

Is there any reason to get the mv7+ over an mv7x with a sm7b or an mv7+ windscreen? mv7+ cost about 268 euro and the mv7x only costs 161 euros (do need an interface but seems better to have an interface for that 100 euro difference).
If you're only going to be using it via XLR, then the MV7X is definitely the way to go 👍
@@tombuck appreciate the reply!
thank you
You can compare the XLR and USB sound by recording both to different tracks, flipping polarity to one of them and see if they null. Pretty common practice in the audio engineering world 😉
@@sonidojamon well someone drank their smug of coffee
Is it possible to use the auto-gain and processing of Motiv but record this processing via XLR? Or does the XLR output only give a clean output?
The XLR is only the clean output, so non of the Motiv processing or effects will be heard.
The new default one isn't any thicker, just longer. I like the reporterstore or Doc Pop replacements since they're much higher quality.
@@tombuck so I assume there is a bit of a gap in between the microphone itself and the windscreen if there is not any extra cushion in the windscreen🤔
Yup, keeping the OG MV7, invested in the colorware and a custom logoed windscreen hehe..
Could you tell me how to find the base where you have the MV7+ mounted?
Congratulations great review.
It's the Rode DS2, which is pricey but I like it a lot.
@@tombuckthanks
I just purchased the Shure MV7+. Does it bring much value to use the Shure RK345 Black Foam Replacement Windscreen for SM7A and SM7B Microphones instead of the one that comes with the MV7+? I read a lot that people replaced the windscreen for the MV7 but could not find much information with the newer MV7+.
I talk about windscreens about 2:44 here, but yes it definitely helps. The new windscreen that comes with the plus is much better though, so you might not need to change it.
@@tombuck thank you! I saw it but wasn’t sure if a change really makes a difference and I don’t have the sm7b windscreen to test.
Does the MV7+ have the Near/Far setting?
YES
The different from XLR quality to USB is kinda big, is that normal for all mics or not i wonder
A lot of computer settings can change the USB quality, so there are definitely some variable there. To my ears, there wasn't much of a different with the MV7, but that could be different depending on your speakers/headphones
I was gonna buy this new version until I heard it doesnt work with console so I just went with the pofmic usb and the sm48
If my pc doesn’t have USB C can I run a USB C to USB? I’m trying to have the XLR connected to an Audio Mixer to one PC and the USB C connected to my work PC.
Yeah, that should work just fine!
I just bought the regular MV7 today for 178USD on sale. MV7 Plus would be good too but it was full price and I did not see the value in that.
That's a GREAT price! Definitely the right decision there.
@@HANNIHYEIN where did you buy it from?

Oof I wish I could get the custom colorware shure mic, It'd be awesome if shure did that themselves or add some cool things to customize it. I don't wanna spend more on a nicer looking mic I already have :C
It looks like it’s available now!
@@tombuck for only $20 seems like a no brainer to go with Colorware!
@@tombuck What about the DocRock mic foam? Since that's like the only customization I can do to the one I already own, I can't afford to drop another 200-300 for this mic to get the colorware version 😭
"Can I use its software with my XLR microphone? Also, can the microphone with a USB-XLR and its software be used with both XLR and USB or only with USB?
no, you lose everything the software gives you if you use XLR
Danke!
Thanks sir! Hope all is well in your world. 🙏
@@tombuck It's my pleasure!
Question on the Podmic USB: Have you, or anyone here, had it randomly reset? I went through 3 of them with that issue and one of my actors is having it with his.
I haven't had the problem myself, but I'll be interested to see if anyone else has.
"While it wasn't the USB SM7b that Shure kinda teased it to be, it Shure did become . . " 😅
So can I just get the new wind screen for my MV7?
Yep!
Is the MV7 Plus good to record voice-overs?
Absolutely! A terrific mic for VO work.
How do you avoid mouth noises like lip smacks, lip clicks, and swallowing sounds when speaking?
A lot of it really comes down to practice and mic technique. Good windscreens and pop filters can help too, along with adding de-clickers and de-essers with software.
Hello, purchased mv7+ and the RØDE DS2 Desktop stand, and the mv7+ does not fit. The screw hole is much bigger, am I missing a screw/nut? Thanks!
The MV7shiuld have come with a small metal adapter. This will allow the mic’s 5/8 connector to work with the stand’s 3/8 connector (this is very common for most mics and boom arms/stands).
Thank you.
@@tombuck where do you get your coloured windscreens as well as your coloured XLR cables?
@@TheSpeedyBlueNinjaHe mentions getting the colorful mic windscreens from the reporter store (online). The link to the XLR cable is in the description of this video.
Color ware does have the plus now
Oh really? Awesome!
hi , thaks bro , you are best👏👏
UA-cam needed this video👏
How does it sound when you have the mic a little further from your mouth?
The mic is designed to be 6-12 inches away, so you wouldn't really want to use it further than that.
Anyone know how long the included cable is? Can't find it on the website. And is it C to C or C to A?
It’s a 6’ (2 meter) c to c cable 👍
can you use usb only on pc just wanna know
Yep! It can be just a standard USB mic
@@tombuck i've seen people say the app is bad or just straight up malware is this true or just bs?
Whats that stand
It's the Rode DS2: geni.us/ULx4l
To me, the price is a big issue. If I'm going to spend $280, I'm just going to throw more cash at it and get the full SM7b
The MV7 is a bit brighter and less mid-rangy, so I wouldn't say the sm7b is an upgrade, just a different microphone
They're definitely very different, especially for anyone who does want USB functionality.
@@tombuck that's a fair point!
That’s what they want you to do. Is the apple way of doing things. Look at their iPad line for example.
@@Jpndiazz that's a fair point.
Can you plug this into a canon c70 somehow ?
You can run it into one of the mini XLR ports with a full size to mini adapter/cable.
@@tombuck does c70 have enough amps inside ?
can i use xlr for pc and usb for ps5?
In theory yes, but I haven’t tried it myself.
@@tombuck purchasing this mic pretty soon, i will update you
why does every company thinks that we all want a big glowing led strip on our microphone? :D
my god, the puns xD
If you know of the band linkin park there is a hilarious short video of a different but similar popper stopper. lol.
I love this.
MV7+ vs Videomic GO II?
Definitely different purposes. The Videomix is better if you want to be further from the mic, and the Shure is better if you cna position the mic close to the speaker (6-12 inches).
The Plus sounds better than the original, but you can get a Podmic USB for cheaper
Funny how NOBODY talks the fact that the MV7+ is STUCK at 48khz. Which can be problematic when you work in 44 or 88 sessions. The weird sh*t here is that the previous MV7 COULD choose between 44 and 48.
If your table stand is $100 (and worth it) the mike at $300 is not too much 😂
Still would get that Lewitt Ray first
I love the Ray!
The plosive stopper does impact the sound.
The Baby-Rogan
Why you bought MV7+? Why Shure didn't gave it to you for free?
I like to pay for things myself as much as possible to help make sure no one thinks reviews are sponsored or biased or anything.
